A Book and a Chat with Polly Holyoke

Today is another one hour special as I chat with another member of the debut YA and Midgrade authors from the class of 2K13. Polly Holyoke is my guest, and when you can write about many of the things you love around a subject you feel strongly about the outcome is bound to be a great book, and so it is with Polly’s debut novel “The Neptune Project”.

Polly has been imagining stories since she was in fifth grade and when she isn't writing, she loves reading, camping, skiing, scuba diving and hiking in the desert, though she did once get herself bitten by a rattlesnake.

When it came to “The Neptune Project” it really helped that she had done quite a bit of scuba diving over the years. Those she has never lived by the sea, she has spent enough hours  under the waves to be able to describe some of the basics—like light, visibility and currents as well as hours and hours reading books on oceanography and articles by avid divers.

With her weak eyes and useless lungs that often leave her gasping for air, Nere feels more at home swimming with the dolphins her mother studies than she does hanging out with her classmates. Nere has never understood why she is so much more comfortable and confident in the water than on land until the day she learns the shocking truth—she is one of a group of kids who have been genetically altered to survive in the ocean. These products of the "Neptune Project" are supposed to build a better future under the waves, safe from the terrible famines and wars and that rock the surface world.

But there are some big challenges ahead of her: no one ever asked Nere if she wanted to be part of a science experiment; the other Neptune kids aren't exactly the friendliest bunch, and in order to reach the safe haven of the new Neptune colony, Nere and her fellow mutates must swim across hundreds of miles of dangerous ocean, relying on their wits, their loyal dolphins and one another to evade terrifying undersea creatures and a government that will stop at nothing to capture the Neptune kids ... dead or alive. 

Fierce battle and daring escapes abound as Nere and her friend race to safety in this action-packed marine adventure.

I loved this book! I can't wait to find out what happens next. I would recommend this book to children and adults. I bought a copy for the ten year old boy that I nanny for, he read it in one day and immediately asked if there was a sequel yet. He's an avid reader and he loved it! I bought another copy for my 11 year old niece, can't wait to give it to her! I will let you know what she thinks.

The characters were great, and the book is packed with adventure from start to finish. I can picture it all on the big screen!

The book is one of those that appeals to both girls and boys, young and old and I highly recommend it to all.

A Book and a Chat with Daniel Haight

Daniel Haight is today’s guest on “A Book and a Chat” raised on Star Wars and Star Trek he has always been a fan of science-fiction. He wrote his first story when in Sixth Grade, an epic tome featuring the adventures of a guy named ‘Daytona Titanium’. From this early experience Daniel went on to write short stories which received rave reviews by fans and professionals alike from all over the world.

This success and contact from fans lead him to make the step and create “the big one” his debut novel “Flotilla”.

Flotilla is the gripping post-apocalyptic science fiction novel that has been described as “Mad Max meets Master & Commander.” Jim Westlake is a teen in the near future just out of rehab raising fish with his father on an ocean colony off of the coast of Los Angeles. Jim wants to put his past behind him but the fact that they live with several thousand strange and dangerous people, doesn’t help.

All of this changes when disaster strikes. Multiple terrorist attacks force Jim’s father to abandon him and head to the mainland. Now Jim has to save his sister from angry drug dealers and pirates. How will Jim rise above his past to survive his future? The answer will keep readers hooked until the very last page.

I found Jim's fear and love to be a great metaphor for some scary life choices that I had to make when I was his age.

A second book is already planned along with a book of Daniels short stories and I can see the name of Daniel Haight being on many people’s must read books.

A Book and a Chat with James Straight

James Straight is my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”. He always knew he wanted to fly, since his early years watching planes land and take off from the small airstrip next to his family farm in rural mizurrah (Missouri).

From these early years where his favorite smells were fresh cut grass and warm aviation exhaust he migrated via becoming the youngest recruit to graduate Special Forces Training Group to the dreamed career in aviation.

Thirty years later after a distinguished career as a professional pilot, which included flying over one hundred different types and categories of airplanes, James embarked on a new career which has ultimately lead to him becoming an author.

His debut book “Weird Missouri” is one of the “Show-Me State” series of offbeat travel guides, that shows readers where to find local legends, craziest characters, oddball curiosities and bizarre roadside attractions. You’ll learn about “Goober Burgers” and “brain sandwiches” as well as meet characters such as “Catfish George” and a farmer in Southern Missouri and his UFO parties.

His new career started James has now gone on to write an adventure novel “Déjà vu All Over Again” an action packed adventure taking place in the final 57 hours prior to the calendar turning 12-21-2012.

A Book and a Chat with Gordon Gumpertz

If you like novels full of action and adventure, or disaster films such as “Armageddon” then Gordon Gumpertz, my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is the author for you.

Gordon, though a writer in his youth left in basically until he retired to follow his writing dream which has now led to the production of “so far” two great page turning novels. In addition he has won gold and silver awards in national and regional short story competitions.

A Book and a Chat with Daniel B Ferry

Daniel B Ferry is the guest on the last “A Book and a Chat" for 2011. His book “Tumbleweed Forts” I have seen reviewed as “A Fantasy as Amazing as the Desert Itself!” so I was looking forward to chatting with the author as well as finding out more about his book.

Daniel, grew up as an “air force brat” traveling to more countries in his pre teen years than most people do in a life time. For part of those younger years, as we learned during the show he lived near and played in the desert, himself building forts made out of tumbleweeds.

As he shared with us during the show, his book though written as a fantasy, covers many of the things that youngsters in the 50’s and 60’s might well have done, as well as a fantastic adventure story.

Joshua is a lonely child. With only his imagination to keep him company, he invents epic adventures in his mind. He leads armies and builds magnificent tumbleweed forts in his desert home. When a trip to his fort goes awry due to a dust storm, Joshua's adventure really begins.

As he huddles in his fort, he is rescued by a mysterious girl named Zeleen. She takes him on an even more amazing adventure than those of his own making.

Many of the events depicted in the novel came from Ferry's own life. By his own admission, he is Joshua. Ferry is the son of an Air Force test pilot, as is Joshua. Though Joshua's description of his father's job is much more elegant and majestic. He calls him a "knight of the sky" - his plane is a "thundering airship".

Daniel Ferry's novel, "Tumbleweed Forts", is a fantasy as fascinating and magical as the desert itself. The reader is drawn into the world of Joshua's imagination, seeing the wonders through his eyes. We go with him as he journeys with Zaleen.”

It might have been written for middlegrade and YA, but is a book that can be read an enjoyed by people of all ages. The book explores the world through Time Travel and much, more, and with a seoncd book already underway, I’m sure we’ll hear more of Daniel B Ferry.

A Book and a Chat with Stephen Beccia

Stephen John Beccia is an avid Stephen King fan and enjoy writing adult horror stories, however that is not why he was today’s guest on “A Book and a Chat”.

Born and Raised in Milford, MA, Stephen has been a local musician for most his life, he started writing stories when he was ten, the first one being his version of Dr. Jekyll. A Book and a Chat with Jon F Merz

The life of author Jon F Merz who is my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”, can only be described as “interesting”. Being raised in Boston, the requirement for some sort of response to bullying lead him to study and then find the love of not only martial arts, but later major in Japanese and East Asian Studies.

This was followed by a spell in the United States Air Force, and later working for a private security, handling a wide array of assignments including executive protection and corporate investigations. Little did he know how those adventurous days would help him fuel his writing habit…

When he was fired for writing a novel and storing it on a work computer, that was the turning point in him becoming a full time writer.

Jon’s first published novels were the start of the “The Lawson Vampire Series”. The Fixer, was quickly followed by three others in the series, before he changed to writing "Jake Thunder Adventures". After this he was responsible for a whole load of Harlequin/Golden Eagle “Rogue Angel Adventures”.

Now the wheel has turned full circle as Jon has just released his latest, and the 5th book in the Lawson series “THE KENSEI”.

THE KENSIE:

After several years, Merz offers a new novel (following Syndicate, 2003) starring vampire secret agent Lawson. This time, Lawson is in Japan on vacation. But trouble arrives almost immediately—on the train from the airport—when an assassin tries to take down a young Japanese man and his girlfriend. Lawson’s interference is more than just annoying, as the assassin he kills was a member of the local Yakuza, the Kensei, and now the Mob wants vengeance. When Lawson’s former KGB agent girlfriend arrives with troubles of her own, his vacation is no longer the least bit relaxing. All this sounds like the setup for a typical action adventure or espionage novel, but, of course, Lawson is a vampire who works for the vampire governing council, specializing in keeping vampires secret and fixing their problems. Other than being crazy strong and very quick to heal (excellent attributes for a secret agent), Lawson is more like Jason Bourne than Dracula, making this a vampire mystery with broad appeal. --Jessica Moyer

With a possible TV contract in the horizon, and further books in the pipeline, I am sure Jon F Merz is a name that we will hear a lot more of.

A Book and a Chat with M.M.Bennetts

M.M.Bennetts, historical author, accomplished pianist and cross country horse rider, is my guest on a fascinating “A Book and a Chat” today.

Not many people in the US realize that where as quite a few presidents have met an untimely end in America, only one British Prime Minister has been assassinated, and that was Prime Minister Perceval who was killed in 1812. A turbulent time in world history, with Napoleon sweeping across Europe, and all that was going on at the time in England.

After over 50 rejections “M” finally got her book “May 1812” published, closely followed by a second book “Of Honest Fame”. These are the first two of a quartet investigating and sharing knowledge which, some of which as we heard during the program has only recently been discovered or in some cases disclosed.

While “May 1812” takes you into the realms of politics and how England must have been with the shock of the Perceval’s assassination, it also shares much of what life was like during that time period, which is the theme throughout the second book and the two yet to be published.

The whole quartet looks at the world at that time from four different sides, and if “May1812” was the political scene, then “Of Honest Fame” is like a 19th century James Bond story. While we think that spying is a modern event, we learn from “M” writing how nearly every section of the government had its own set of spies from the navy and army to even the Bow Street Runners (early police force).

Just the snippets we learn on this dark cloak and dagger stuff would keep a reader turning the pages of this great pair of books. Add to that the knowledge one learns, the exiting plots, and view of a world that is still shrouded in mystery and you can see why not only are the first two books by M.M Bennett’s already proving hugely popular, but also why many are already asking for the view of that world in the next books.

As we learned from a truly interesting chat, we will be visiting and learning about the historical issues in Italy and Vienna in these next two eagerly awaited novels.

The name M.M. Bennetts might have taken a few rejections before it hit the book shelves, but I’m sure it will be a name that will soon spread around the historical fiction readers throughout the world.

A Book and a Chat with Jenny Davidson

A short time ago, and old friend of the program, author of “Willow”, Julia Hoban contacted me about a friend of hers, who I have since found out was also a teacher of hers, who had a new YA novel coming out in November of 2011. The fact Julia mentioned that her friend and I were the “only two people of my acquaintance who know what ‘bubble and squeak' is, let alone have eaten it."

With a comment like that how could I not have her friend as a guest on the show?
This was doubled in “must have as a guest” when I found out this friend was none other than “Jenny Davidson"the author of the wonderful YA novel “The Explosionist” whose follow up novel “Invisible Things” comes out in November.

Jenny is a teacher, writer, numerous award winner, triathlon athlete, and one of the few people I’ve ever heard of who actually went to both Harvard and Yale (I thought there was a US law against that?).

Her first book a novel for adults, “Heredity” came out in 2003, to be followed by several nonfiction titles. Her debut YA novel “The Explosionist” hit the YA shelves in 2008, receiving many fantastic reviews, though as we heard during the show, not without a misunderstanding or two along the way.

The book is set in an alternative world, where Napoleon had one at Waterloo, and the French had been in power, except for a the northern countries such as Scotland, Denmark, Sweden etc. etc.

Jenny’s new book “Invisible Things” carries on the life of her hero 'Sophie', whose hair has now grown longer… (you’ll have to listen to the show to understand that comment) in late 1930’s French speaking Europe.

INVISIBLE THINGS:

Sixteen-year-old Sophie knows there is more to the story of her parents' death. And she's on a mission to find the truth. To aid her in solving the decades-old mystery, Sophie has enlisted her best friend, Mikael, whose friendship has turned into something more. A Book and a Chat with Dean M. DeLuke

My guest on today’s”A Book and a Chat” is Dr Dean M DeLuke. I guess now that people can type up their novels on a computer, it does not matter that people always had trouble reading doctors writing, and perhaps that’s why there seem to be more and more doctors, turning their hands to writing.

In the case Dean, it is not just his medical background that he’s been able to use in the production of his mystery/thriller novel “SHEDROW” but also his love for thoroughbred racing, that goes back to his youth.

Think “Dick Francis meets Robin Cook” and you’ll have a rough idea of this splendid debut novel. It is a story and adventure that straight from the off, gallops along taking the reader through many twists and turns on a page turning adventure. “Shedrow” is not just for horse lovers and thoroughbred race enthusiasts, to whom the word “Shedrow” is instantly recognized as a row of barns at a race track. It is a book for all ages and sexes, the book is a terrific whodunit, with characters that lead you from one chapter to another making you want to know more about them.

As Dean shared with us during the show, the book and the publication has been helped by other medical authors, and I’m sure the name Dean M DeLuke will soon be spoken about with other famous doctor authors.

A Book and a Chat with "Frank F Fiore"

If like myself you like the type of adventure novels written by Clive Cussler and Tom Clancy then my guest on tonight,s show has a book for you. Frank F. Fiore is a best selling author of over 50,000 copies of his non-fiction books. Now Frank has turned his talents to action-adventure novel "CyberKill".

Frank shared with us during the show that the actual writing and editing of the book has taken around ten years as Frank has honed his writing skill to produce this "must read" finished article.

Indeed as Frank explained, some of the items which might have been a bit hard to believe as possible ten years ago, are now actually available and used in warfare and espionage.

Frank explained his writing process and how his transition from non-fiction writer to fiction author has taken place. How from the book being a POD (print on demand) book, has now been picked up by TrapDoor Books, where not only are they using modern networking skills, but also have the book out as free-to-play Flash Game where it has just hit 50,000 players, with an 18% click through rate.
