A Book and a Chat with Gail Z. Martin

My guest on today’s show is Gail Z. Martin she is the author of three fantastic fantasy series, the Ascendant Kingdoms Saga series, the Chronicles of the Necromancer series, and the Fallen Kings Cycle series.

Writing since she could hold a crayon, Gail’s first story was about a vampire, during middle school with a mix of Star Trek syndicated re-runs (the original 1966 series) and A. E. van Vogt’s Destination: Universe! Gail discovered science fiction.

From the huge success of the Chronicles of the Necromancer series, Gail continued to weave a magical spell with her “Fallen Kings Cycle of which her latest novel “The Dread” is the second of the new series.

About “The Dread”

Summoner - King Tris Drayke takes what remains of the Margolan army north to fight a war. But he's heading for a fight they are ill-prepared to win, and spies confirm Tris's worst fear. A dark summoner is gathering his forces and plans to exploit the Winter Kingdoms' weakness.

And in Isencroft, King Donelan is assassinated. Tris's queen, Kiara, must return and claim her father's crown - but the summoner's agents will do anyting to stop her. Kiara and Tris must discover his secrets, find the mysterious power surrounding their infant son, and face the awesome power of the Dread as they rise from their barrows for the first time in over a millennium. And if the summoner claims the Dread for his own, only old magic can hold back the nightmar
e.

There are two further books planned to be released this year. Reign of Ash (book 2 of the Ascendant Kingdoms saga) will be released by Orbit in April 2014 and the first in an urban fantasy series Deadly Curiosities which will be released by Solaris in July 2014, something completely different from her high fantasy novels.

A Book and a Chat with Natalie Gayle

In her teens Natalie Gayle, author of Finding Trust and the guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” took an occupational test and it said I should be a writer. She did not think anything more of it creating a career as a project manager in IT, all the time though this longing to become a writer was there bubbling under the surface.

As we learned during an entertaining though due to phone issues a sometimes interrupted show, this hidden need to write finally produced Natalie’s debut novel “Finding Trust” which was released earlier this year and has been followed by “Finding Judgment”.

Finding Trust is not your normal romance novel, it is part contemporary romance, part romantic suspense, and part science fiction ...or paranormal romance with some urban fantasy thrown in for good measure. The result however is a book that many are already stating is a “must read” and one that you just can’t put down.

About “Finding Trust”:

He’s hot, sexy, and leads a double life. Sometimes in the limelight, mostly in the shadows. Brayden James holds fast to a secret that’s more than his to share.

She’s a singularly focused veterinarian out for a rare night of fun with friends, at a New Year’s Eve rock concert. Going home with the lead guitarist was furthest thing from Rihanna Mason’s mind when the night began.

When Rihanna inadvertently becomes the target of a deadly terrorist plot using the Hendra virus as a biological weapon, Brayden is forced to reveal his other life.  His job is to keep her safe and together they must stop the terrorists before it’s too late. But what happens when she becomes more to him than just the assignment?

Will the secret he cannot disclose ultimately prove too much for Rihanna’s fragile trust in relationships? Or will he finally break through the double brick walls around her heart, where every other man has failed?

As one reviewer stated about what she liked about the book…

WHAT I LIKED: Everything. I was drawn in from the very first page and the connection I felt to the characters was intense. Instead of feeling like I was the reader, I felt like I was every characters; I loved when they did, cried when they did, jumped in surprise when they did, etc. I felt like these characters and the story were pouring out of the pages and into my apartment. The author is very talented and has gained a new fan... Me.

Well reviewer I too have joined the band of fans of Natalie Gayle

A Book and a Chat with Justina Ireland

Yesterdays show was one of my one hour specials, as I welcomed another of the Class of 2K13 debut YA authors in the form of Justina Ireland.

Justina though doing the normal school writing did not really think about creating her first novel until recently. Far from following her love for historical events she created a YA novel more about dangerous girls than dangerous times. her debut book being called "Vengeance Bound".

Justina says about the book

“Vengeance Bound is really the product of two things: my time spent in the Army and being a light-skinned black girl and the expectations attached to both of those situations.”

Starting out she had her main character as a light-skinned black girl Justina found it a struggle to create the story, she then, as we learned during the show, changed her to the stereotypical dumb blonde and the story just flowed.

About “Vengeance Bound”: (taken Dark Faerie Tales blog)

Cory Graff is not alone in her head. Bound to a deal of desperation made when she was a child, Cory’s mind houses the Furies—the hawk and the serpent—lingering always, waiting for her to satisfy their bloodlust. After escaping the asylum where she was trapped for years, Cory knows how to keep the Furies quiet. By day, she lives a normal life, but by night, she tracks down targets the Furies send her way. And she brings down Justice upon them.

Cory’s perfected her system of survival, but when she meets a mysterious boy named Niko at her new school, she can’t figure out how she feels about him. For the first time, the Furies are quiet in her head around a guy. But does this mean that Cory’s finally found someone who she can trust, or are there greater factors at work? As Cory’s mind becomes a battlefield, with the Furies fighting for control, Cory will have to put everything on the line to hold on to what she’s worked so hard to build.

The book is due to be launched in April and Justina already has a second book possibly being called “Promise of Shadows” scheduled for March next year.

A Book and a Chat with Kim Baccellia

Kim Baccellia, my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” had her first success at the age of six, when she won an art contest, a small picture of which was in the San Francisco Chronicle. That started Kim on the creative road that has lead to her so far two successful books. I say so far, as I’m sure these will be the first of many successes.

After having writing credits in various magazines and including several poems, also her essay on the adoption of her son, Our Turn, appeared in both Adoptive Families magazine and the Adoptive Families 2003-2004 Adoption Guide

As an educator, Kim couldn't find many books for Latinos that were upbeat or dealt with their heritage. During her personal quest to find out more about her own Mexican heritage, she began writing her YA Urban Fantasy “Earrings of Ixtumea”
This successful book has been followed up by , her paranormal young adult fiction novel “Crossed Out”

About Crossed Out:

Following the light can’t be that hard, right? So why don’t the dead just do it and leave Stephanie Steward alone? However nothing is ever as simple as it should be as Stephanie learns when her hidden ‘gift’ becomes more than a nuisance, quickly turning into a liability. If she can’t learn to trust someone with her secret, the world as she knows it will go to hell. Literally. But if she doesn’t choose wisely, she might just end up learning firsthand how hard it is to follow that light. Because she’s next on the list to be crossed out…

.
During an entertaining thirty minute show, Kim shared with us much about history behind her writing, as well as an incite not only into her two books, but also on her up and coming novel upper MG fantasy "No Goddesses Allowed".

Time as normal went by so quickly but as with every show we learned not only something about the guest and their books, but also about the art of writing and promoting.

So sit back and enjoy today’s “A Book and a Chat with Kim Baccellia”

A Book and a Chat with Jeri Smith-Ready

My special guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is author “Jeri Smith-Ready”. While Jeri has several books and trilogies under her writing belt, her new book “SHADE” is her debut venture into the realms of YA literature.

Jeri’s early plans save the earth were ruined when she realized she was more of a “problem maker” than a problem solver. This did not deter her however and her first book written in 1995/6 was about an environmental crusader-type guy fighting a coal mining company. This novel never saw the light of day and as Jeri explained she now classes it as her first “practice novel”. Her second attempt proved much more successful, though being ahead of her time with EBooks did turn her novel more into a “cult” book than actually find her overnight success.

“Requiem for the Devil” did however put the name of Jeri Smith-Ready onto the literature map. The book garnered a cult following (which is a nice way of saying only a few people read it, but those who did, loved it). This following included Stacy Boyd, who later became one of the editors for a new imprint of female-focused fantasy, Luna Books. Stacy asked Jeri to submit a proposal, and the "Aspect of Crow" series was born.

The Aspect of Crow trilogy proved to be a huge success, being soon followed by “Wonderful Game" the first book in the extremely popular “WVMP Radio Series”.
During the show Jeri shared with us her current work in progress as well as what might be happening in her other” Urban Fantasy” novel, before we started discussing her YA book “Shade”.

What people say about “SHADE” which will soon be follwed by her next book in the series "SHIFT"

SHADE is a hauntingly good story and an intriguing beginning to a new series. Jeri Smith-Ready proves again why she is one of my very favorite reads! --P.C. Cast, New York Times-bestselling author of the House of Night series

The perfect combination of mystery, ghosts and romance, SHADE left me breathless. --Lisa Schroeder, author of I HEART YOU, YOU HAUNT ME

Smith-Ready writes movingly and well about music, first love and the drama of having too much responsibility thrust upon your teenage shoulders. Her world is first-rate and every one of her characters rings true. You'll want to read the next book in this exciting series immediately, but alas, you'll have to wait. --RT Book Reviews.

Jeri proved a really interesting and entertaining guest and the show is one people of all ages will enjoy. So why not sit back and listen to today's "A Book and a Chat with Jeri Smith-Ready.
