A Book and a Chat with Annie-Laurie Hunter

Sometimes a story just comes to you, almost as if the main character had been waiting there until you noticed them. Then once you do and open yourself up to their story it just flows from you. Such was the case with my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”.

Annie-Laurie Hunter heard the story from her main character Sarah and within five weeks had the story written.  As she explained during the show, it was like Sarah was sitting next to her, waiting patiently for Annie-Laurie to keep up with her narration as she told her story for all to read.

Annie-Laurie’s debut book “The Sarah Puzzle” is intended to for mature readers, it contains explicit sexual content and in many aspects it can be called disturbing, however as many reviewers have stated it is one that you just can’t put down.

About “The Sarah Puzzle” (Taken from Amazon) :

“Tony, we’ve got a kid up here.” So begins The Sarah Puzzle. Why is a tiny mute child sleeping in a condemned building in the Village? Where did she come from and how has she survived alone? As the community fits the puzzle pieces together a horrifying picture emerges of pedophilia, psychological abuse, and murder. Can Sarah integrate love, caring, and faith into her sense of self, which was formed in depravity? The Sarah Puzzle can only be solved by grownups who will not stand idly by in the face of evil. Are you willing to journey with Sarah to solve The Sarah Puzzle?

As one reviewer put it…

The Sarah Puzzle is an engaging primer for what the helping community can and should do for victims of sexual abuse. Sarah's journey from nameless, voiceless victim to a young girl who is well on her way to recovery, is engrossing, horrifying and hopeful, all at once. Though at times difficult to read, given the subject matter, the book is well-written, and the characters are brought to life in a really human way. Annie-Laurie Hunter has created and carefully crafted a wonderful main character, as well as those on Sarah's Team. It's a great example of the healing that can take place when sensitivity, caring, thoughtful intervention and compassion are at the heart of the helping community. This book should be required reading for anyone who works with victims of sexual abuse!

A Book and a Chat with "Mystic" Pete Ludwig

My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is radio host, cellist, music and video producer, spiritual teacher, aphorist and now author. He is also better known to his many radio fans on the west coast as “Mystic Pete”.

Pete has taught and organized events internationally connecting spirituality and the arts (music, dance, storytelling, and writing); he has also produced a really great musical CD to aid deep relaxation and meditation. He hosts a popular radio show, “In A Dream,” one of the only broadcast shows on the West Coast featuring the DJ community, on KXLU, 88.9 fm, Los Angeles, Saturday nights at midnight.

His debut book “Mystic Pete Chronicles – Book 1: Sex & Mysticism” is the first in a series of books in which he provides a fresh, innovative and often humorous “how-to manual” for acquiring advanced mystical power.

About “Mystic Pete Chronicles – Book 1: Sex & Mysticism” :

Presented in an engaging style, his ideas will make you stop, laugh, and think—the recipe for a great guidebook. Starting with an assessment of where we are now, Mystic Pete then takes us to a new reality that is sure to rearrange your view of who we are and where we’re going.

Some of the jewels of wisdom he drops on us: the two big lessons we have to learn, the most important secret to great sex, the purpose of the universe, the plan, and -a really interesting view of what spurred the construction of our civilization.

Using his own spiritual training method, the Five Powers- Self Protection, Healing, Raw Power, Manifestation, and Guidance- Mystic Pete guides the reader to wisdom, compassion, and dignity and provides a comprehensive foundation in mysticism.

In his future books “Mystic Pete” will provide much more details on each of the five powers along with the body, relationships, mystical sex techniques, the spiritual laws, and advanced matters.

The Mystic Pete Chronicles provide a breath of fresh air in the mystical power, health and well-being books, taking the reader from laughter to deep thought.

A Book and a Chat with Mike Bond

After being off for a week due to family illness and incidents I am back with another cracking guest, this time in the form of best-selling novelist, war and human rights correspondent, environmental activist, award-winning poet and international energy expert, Mike Bond.

Mike has lived globetrotting and often dangerous life , he’s  lived and worked in over thirty countries on six continents. An adviser to the US and foreign governments, human rights and war correspondent, award-winning poet and international energy expert, Mike has used his own experience of many dangerous, remote and war-torn regions of the world to enhance his bestselling novels… he is… as the BBC called him…” The master of the existential thriller" .

Mike’s four previous novels are all based on his experiences in far, dangerous corners of the world:

THE LAST SAVANNA: A former British commando battles elephant poachers who then kidnap the woman he loves, in this acclaimed inside story of Africa's disappearing savannas, animals and freedoms.
CROSSFIRE: A British undercover agent fights for his life in Beirut at the height of the Lebanese War -- a deep look into the Middle East's ancient wars and hatreds.

FIRE LIKE THE SUN: An international best-seller about U.S. nuclear warheads lost in the Himalayas, a manhunt through Nepal, Iran, Greece, Algeria, France, Virginia and Colorado.

NIGHT OF THE DEAD: Vietnam vet and weed smuggler Joe Murphy loses his plane in a Guatemalan jungle attack, falls in love with the woman guerrilla who heals him, and fights to protect them both as the death squads hunt them down.

Now he brings us a his latest thriller  SAVING PARADISE in which an Afghanistan War veteran–turned-surfer risks his life and freedom to search for a journalist’s murderer.

About "Saving Paradise": (taken from Authors Web Page)

When a beautiful journalist drowns mysteriously in Honolulu Bay, former Special Forces veteran Pono Hawkins, now a well-known Hawaii surfer and international correspondent for surfing magazines, soon gets embroiled in trying to find why she died. What he learns quickly makes him a target for murder or life in prison as a cabal of powerful corporations, foreign killers and crooked politicians turns the blame on him.

Haunted by memories of Afghanistan, and determined to protect the Hawaii he loves from dirty politics tied to huge destructive energy developments, Pono turns to Special Forces buddies and his own skills to fight his deadly enemies, trying both to save himself and find her killers.

Alive with the sights, sounds and history of Hawaii, Saving Paradise is also a deeply rich portrait of what Pono calls “the seamy side of paradise”, and an exciting thriller of politics, lies and remorseless murder.

Mike Bond’s critically acclaimed novels depict the innate hunger of the human heart for good, the intense joys of love, the terror and fury of battle, the sinister vagaries of politics and multinational corporations, and the magical beauty of the vanishing natural world in thrill a minute, page turning, must read adventures.

A Book and a Chat with Dr Mark Rubinstein

Fellow Connecticut author Dr Mark Rubinstein was due to be my guest on last weeks show however a flat tire and no mobile meant he could not make the show. Meanwhile my guest for this weeks show had to drop out as their book is not in print yet and they wanted to put off appearing until it was available. Therefore two wrongs ended up making a right and I am pleased to say that Dr Mark Rubinstein is the guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”.

From his background of medicine and psychiatry which includes several non-fiction books, Mark wrote his first debut fiction novel in the form of the wonderful suspenseful and riveting, “Mad Dog House” which he shared with us on his last visit. This book went on to be a “Finalist for the 2012 ForeWord Reviews Book of the Year Award”  (Thriller & Suspense), as well as receiving over a 150 glowing reviews on Amazon, and I might add one of the favorite books in my own household.

Now Mark is back with a brand new and and if anything even more “can’t stop reading and page turning” novel in the form of “Love Gone Bad” a wonderful tense, moving, and wondrously bone-chilling novel.

As the Library Journal described “Love Gone Bad”…

There's nothing subtle or surprising about Rubinstein's one-note tale of obsessive love and insanity, and that includes the characterization, plotting, and especially the writing.

He's got a story to tell, so by God he tells it, without the slightest nod to artifice or art. Surgeon Adrian Davis, divorced and consumed by his job, meets gorgeous nurse Megan Haggarty in the lunchroom of the New England hospital where they both work, and before he can even touch his chicken soup, he's madly in love and the feeling seems reciprocated. Megan's a single mom, and she's got a big secret. Her ex-husband, Conrad Wilson, "a brilliant madman," has arrived from Colorado, and he's determined to kill Megan,; their daughter, Marlee,; and Megan's new boyfriend, Adrian. Adrian and Megan escape a number of attacks, until Conrad is finally caught and put in a hospital for the criminally insane.

There's no question he's going to escape, and in fact no questions at all as the story speeds to its inevitable conclusion.

A giant twist toward the end will leave most readers more amazed by how Rubinstein  laboriously manages it than by what it actually is.

The book is a fast paced page turner, a provocative psychological thriller that will keep you as one reviewer stated… “kept reading faster and faster to find out the ending.”

Last time  Dr Rubinstein was on the show I used the comment from one reviewer who was wanting more after Mad Dog House…

Word of caution: be prepared for an all-night, page-turning read where you will emerge exhilarated and begging for more.”

Well reviewer your wish will be granted, as we discussed during the show the originally planned standalone novel will soon have a follow up in the form of “Mad Dog Justice".

A Book and a Chat with Noah Baird

Noah Baird makes a welcome return to “A Book and a Chat” this evening. He is the only guest I’ve had on the show that failed to get into clown school… his grades were not good enough. However he did get into the navy for fourteen years. Now I’m not sure if that just shows how hard it is to be a clown, or how many failed clowns there might be in the navy.

After that as he spent time as a standup comedian, in Hawaii, working for food, in a dry club, often as we heard trying to tell jokes to a non English speaking audience. Still as we now know, he did have a boat named after one of his joke punch lines… (You’ll have to listen to the show to find out just what that was.).

When last on the show Noah shared about his book “Donations of Clarity” of which Genny "Honu" LaFontaine wrote… “I haven't laughed this hard since 1967." We don’t know what made her laugh in 1967, but as anybody who listened to tonight’s “A Book and a Chat” can vouch the author and his debut book are certainly things to exercise your chuckle bone.

About Donations to Clarity:

The plan was simple: hoax Bigfoot, then sell tours to Bigfoot enthusiasts. The plan wasn't brilliant, and neither were Harry, Earl, and Patch. The three chemical-abusing friends only wanted to avoid the 9 to 5 rat race, but their antics attract the attention of a real Bigfoot. When the misogynistic Earl is mistaken for a female Bigfoot by the nearsighted creature and captured; it is just the beginning of their problems.

The U.S. Government has a plan to naturalize the mythical creatures living within the U.S. borders. The problem is the plan needs to be carried out carefully. You can't just drop little green men and Sasquatch in the middle of Walmart without warning Ma and Pa Taxpayer. The naturalization program is not ready to be set into motion, and the rogue Bigfoot is bringing too much attention to itself, including a feisty investigative reporter who uncovers the truth of the government conspiracy and two Bigfoot researchers. No longer able to contain the situation, government agents are tasked with eliminating the Bigfoot and all witnesses.

Between bong hits and water balloon fights, Harry and Patch come up with a plan to save Earl and the lovestruck Bigfoot. Where do you hide a giant, mythical creature? In an insane asylum, because who is going to listen to them?

Now Noah has a new book out, this time aimed at a younger audience, in fact as we learned it was written at the request of his two children, who wanted him to write a book they could read.  Kimberley McMaugh also provides beautiful illustrations for  this charming new children’s book “Southpaw”.

About “Southpaw”

In a wacky town of only left-handed people, something is not right . . .
South Paw explores the ideas of discrimination, bias, and acceptance. Read this book for enjoyment, or use it to stimulate deeper discussions on how we should treat each other
.

As one reviewer stated…

Wonderful book with unique illustrations! A fun book for children with a valuable life lesson. Hope to see more from the talented team of Noah Baird and Kim McMaugh!

A Book and a Chat with Raymond Khoury

When it comes down to it some of my favorite reading is with authors like Steve Berry, adventure type books, with a bit of history perhaps thrown in, something to get your teeth into so to speak. My guest today is another such author screen writer and New York Times bestselling novelist Raymond Khoury.

Raymond went from a career as an architect to becoming one of the most popular historical action adventure authors as well as a screen play writer of note.

As we learned from the show, Raymond’s trip through the literary jungle was not without mishap… He actually thought he’d made it big as a screen play writer before his success as a novelist when his adaptation of Melvin Bragg’s novel The Maid of Buttermere was picked up by none other than Robert De Niro who announced in the Variety that he would be producing the movie and playing the lead role. Unfortunately nothing more came of that screen play however it did lead to the production “The Last Templar” originally written as a screen play, Raymond was persuaded to adapt it into a novel.

The rest as they say is history. It soon became a New York Times Bestseller, spending 11 weeks on the hardcover fiction list, and a Number 1 bestseller overseas. It has been translated into thirty-eight languages and published in over forty countries. It was also the book where we first met FBI agent Sean Reilly.

This success was soon followed by “The Sanctuary” and “The Sign” before Sean Reilly re-appeared in “The Templar Salvation, a sequel to The Last Templar and “The Devil’s Elixir”.  Now Sean Reilly returns in what will surely another smash hit novel “Rasputin’s Shadow”.

About Rasputin’s Shadow”: (taken from authors web site)

On a cold, bleak day in 1916, a mining pit in Siberia turns into a bloodbath when its miners attack each other, savagely and ferociously. Minutes later, two men - a horrified scientist and Grigory Rasputin, trusted confidant of the tsar - hit a detonator, blowing up the mine to conceal all evidence of the carnage.

In the present day, FBI agent Sean Reilly is tasked with a new, disturbing case. A Russian embassy attaché seems to have committed suicide by jumping out of a fourth-floor window in Queens. The apartment's owners, a retired high school teacher and his wife, have gone missing, while a faceless killer is roaming New York City, leaving a trail of death in his wake.

Joined by Russian FSB agent Larisa Tchoumitcheva, Reilly's investigation into the old man's identity will uncover a deadly search for a mysterious device whose origins reach back in time to the darkest days of the Cold War and to Imperial Russia and which, in the wrong hands, could have a devastating impact on the modern world.

As the Library Journal described the book…

"History, mystery, suspense, and action—Khoury knows the recipe for a good read." —Library Journal.

With further books already in the pipeline the name Raymond Khoury will continue to be must read and be found on book shelves everywhere.

A Book and a Chat with Douglas E. Richards

Today’s guest is Douglas E. Richards New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of WIRED, its sequel, AMPED, THE CURE, and six critically acclaimed middle-grade adventures enjoyed by kids and adults alike. He has been widely praised for his ability to weave action, suspense, and science into riveting novels that brilliantly straddle the thriller and science fiction genres.

Leaving a career as a biotech executive (he even has a virus named after him) Douglas started his writing journey with a middle-grade/YA science fiction trilogy “The Prometheus Project". While written for that age group the series has been critically acclaimed by kids and adults alike.

Wanting to branch into the Thriller market one day Douglas launched his story “Wired” as an E-Book, the rest as they say is history. Almost overnight Wired took off, throwing him into the New York Times and USA Today best sellers list and bringing his name and his talent to thousands of readers. This early success was followed by “Amped” which enforced the name Douglas E. Richards in the thriller world.

Now a new thriller has been released in the form of “The Cure”

About “The Cure”:  (taken from the authors web site)

Erin Palmer had a devastating encounter with a psychopath as a child. Now a grad student and scientist, she's devoting her life to studying these monsters. When her research catches the attention of Hugh Raborn, a brilliant neuroscientist who claims to have isolated the genes responsible for psychopathic behavior, Erin realizes it may be possible to reverse the condition, restoring souls to psychopaths. But to do so, she'll not only have to operate outside the law, but violate her most cherished ethical principles.

As Erin becomes further involved with Raborn, she begins to suspect that he harbors dark secrets. Is he working for the good of society? Or is he intent on bringing humanity to its knees?

Hunted by powerful, shadowy forces, Erin teams up with another mysterious man, Kyle Hansen, to uncover the truth. The pair soon find themselves pawns in a global conspiracy--one capable of destroying everything Erin holds dear. And forever altering the course of human history . . .

At a time when society seems to be facing an epidemic of psychopathic monsters, The Cure explores this condition, and the surprisingly thorny ethical and moral dilemmas surrounding it, within an explosive, thought-provoking, roller-coaster-ride of a thriller that will have readers turning pages deep into the night.

As New York Times bestselling author Douglas Preston described the book…

"The Cure will keep you turning the pages all night long."

Douglas has not forgotten his Science Fiction and books for younger readers either; novels like “Out of This World”, “The Devils Sword” and “Ethan Pritcher, Body Switcher” have also been produced by this talented author.
