A Book and a Chat with Louise Shaffer

Wikipedia describes today’s guest Louise Shaffer as…

Throughout her life, Shaffer has appeared in numerous soap operas, including Hidden Faces, Search for Tomorrow where she played two separate roles; that of Emily Rogers Hunter and Stephanie Wilkins, Where the Heart Is (in which she played James Mitchell's stony and somewhat snobby sister, Allison Hathaway Archer Jessup), The Edge of Night (where she played Serena Faraday/Josie), All My Children, and Guiding Light. However, her most recognized role was that of Rae Woodard on Ryan's Hope, a role she played from 1977 to 1984, and then reprised for the show's finale in .
She was nominated for two Daytime Emmy Awards for her portrayal of Rae Woodard on Ryan's Hope; she won the award in 1983. In addition to her daytime roles, Shaffer also had a role on the short-lived Norman Lear sitcom All That Glitters.

But that does not tell the half of what a great entertaining, and fun lady Louise is, shows with her are something I always look forward to having knowing there will be lots of laughter amongst the serious discussion, and always there will be something new to learn about this fascinating lady, and of course today was no let down.

Emmy award winner, actress, screen writer, author and possibly one of the worst waitress’s there has ever been, we can now add another line to Louise’s description when we learned about her singing voice and the fact she has not sense of timing, so that when she appeared in musical shows, people had to literary lip sync with her to keep her in time… such gems are what makes the show and today’s guest so much fun.

Now a successful author including her hugely popular novel “Serendipity”, Louise’s latest and possibly best novel to date is “Looking for a Love Story”.

Looking for a Love Story

As always, actors and artists are central to her novel, making “Looking for a Love Story” a witty, charming read. Along the way you find the storyline incorporating a history of vaudeville.

As Francesca in writing Joe and Ellie's old-style romance tale centered on true love and sacrifice, learns more about herself than she ever would have expected, and grows in important ways.

It is a story full of great characters including Chicky Masters, a feisty Swinging Great-Grandma, who resides in the Yorkville House for Senior Living, calls her Doll Face.

With another book underway I’m sure Louise will continue to entertain us with her writing, as she has done with her acting and enjoyment of living throughout her life, including the laughter she brought to today’s “A Book and a Chat”.

So sit back and listen to today's thoroughly entertaining show as I host today's "A Book and a Chat with Louise Shaffer".

A Book and a Chat with David W Richards

Stopping by for a chat today is David W Richards a member of the Canadian Authors Association and beyond being a novelist also a script-doctor and freelance writer. His book “PAIRS” is engaging and hilarious like a cross between Sex & the City and The Celestine Prophesy.

Unlike many authors he did not want to be a writer from early on, in fact was a bit of a class clown while at school, instead he got his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, and then took up accountancy.

The writing bug eventually bit with the result being his debut novel “PAIRS” a book that has been labeled “Woman’s Fiction”.

When asked why women’s fiction? his very short answser was: why not?

A less short answer is that he didn’t know that I had written a women’s fiction novel.

A slightly longer answer is...

Publishers and agents insist on knowing your genre since they often specialize in specific categories and have established networks and promotional templates. It wasn’t until after writing ‘Pairs’, that he began to think about readership, and he recognized everything had fallen into place for the story to be classified as a work of women’s fiction.

So what about PAIRS?

PAIRS is the story of Kayley and Adam, a single mom who makes her living writing greeting cards and a young carpenter; and Alexandra and Henry, a former stripper with dual identities and a math teacher with some unusual gender issues. The couples are connected through Henry and Adam, who are cousins, and through Kayley’s friend Helen, who is also Henry’s step-sister. As each couple builds a connection, the joint friendship turns into family. Kayley’s daughter, Terra, becomes a central focus of both relationships; she is loved and nurtured by the village that the couples create.

With the tightening of the bond between the couples, the mission for the pairs—which begins and ends with Kayley—turns to parenthood for Henry and Alexandra. The story weaves the elements of past sexual abuse, sexual dysfunction, problem pregnancies, and absolute devotion to family into a plot that draws the reader into the lives of these very unconventional characters...

We learned that this is not the end of the some of the characters in PAIRS, that David’s favorite character Alexandra will be the thread that will be there to lead the reader through several future books.

A Book and a Chat with Julia Karr

Today I host Julia Karr, my first guest from the 2K11 or 11’s group, this year’s group of debut YA authors.

Not only, was it a show full of laughter and enjoyment, but one where we learned a lot about Julia and her book “XVI”.

Julia learned to read at a very early age, thinking it unfair her sister could read but she couldn’t, not only that she even has a picture to prove the fact.

Writing poetry in her early days, and then some short stories for her young daughters, Julie developed into the writer that she is today once her daughter had grownup and she was able to concentrate on her writing.

The idea for a book came from a mental image she had of a girl one day. She was wearing earbuds, dancing down the street of a big city, trying not to be disturbed by the noise and the homeless man at her feet. Then when National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) started a week later, she decided to “meet” that girl and find out what her story was. It turned out to be XVI.

A much travelled lady, she shared with us some wonderful stories of her early days and her journey into becoming a published writer, including how she chose her agent. The way the book changed along the editing path and how some of the chapters almost wrote themselves.

About XVI:

"In the year 2150, being a girl isn’t necessarily a good thing, especially when your sixteenth (read sex-teenth) birthday is fast approaching. That in itself would be enough to make anyone more than a little nuts, what with the tattoo and all – but Nina Oberon’s life has taken a definite turn for the worse. Her mother is brutally stabbed and left for dead. Before dying, she entrusts a secret book to Nina, telling her to deliver it to Nina's father. But, first Nina has to find him; since for fifteen years he's been officially dead. Complications arise when she rescues Sal, a mysterious, and ultra hot guy. He seems to like Nina, but also seems to know more about her father than he’s letting on. Then there’s that murderous ex-government agent who’s stalking her, and just happens to be her little sister’s dad."

As well as learning about Julia’s work in progress and the possible follow up to “XVI” Julia also shared with us some tips for writing, some of which I am shamelessly stealing to share on this blog.

Excuses for not writing:

No time? Write when you’re waiting to pick up the kids, when you’re in line at the grocery store think on plots, when you’re waiting in the dentist’s office jot down a scene. VoilĂ©, you’re writing.

Writer’s block? I just don’t buy it. Write something, anything -- a list of your main character’s traits, a description of your story setting, reasons why certain plot points will or won’t work. Just simply write -- even if it sucks, eventually it won’t.

Uninspired? Take a walk and mentally write what you are seeing. Then when you get back home, write what you saw in relation to what you’re working on. So, you may be writing a Lost in Space book and you saw only gardens and lush growth - might your Main Character be homesick for something like that?

Your writing’s not good? Well, truth is, it won’t get any better if you don’t practice - which means write!

No one wants to read what I write. There are audiences for nearly every kind of story you can imagine. If you write, rewrite, edit, polish, find a critique group for help and support -- you’ll honestly discover whether what you are writing will find an audience. If you ultimately decide it won’t -- then write something else!

So sit back and listen to today's thoroughly entertaining show as I host today's "A Book and a Chat with Julia Karr".

A Book and a Chat with Jon F Merz

The life of author Jon F Merz who is my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”, can only be described as “interesting”. Being raised in Boston, the requirement for some sort of response to bullying lead him to study and then find the love of not only martial arts, but later major in Japanese and East Asian Studies.

This was followed by a spell in the United States Air Force, and later working for a private security, handling a wide array of assignments including executive protection and corporate investigations. Little did he know how those adventurous days would help him fuel his writing habit…

When he was fired for writing a novel and storing it on a work computer, that was the turning point in him becoming a full time writer.

Jon’s first published novels were the start of the “The Lawson Vampire Series”. The Fixer, was quickly followed by three others in the series, before he changed to writing "Jake Thunder Adventures". After this he was responsible for a whole load of Harlequin/Golden Eagle “Rogue Angel Adventures”.

Now the wheel has turned full circle as Jon has just released his latest, and the 5th book in the Lawson series “THE KENSEI”.

THE KENSIE:

After several years, Merz offers a new novel (following Syndicate, 2003) starring vampire secret agent Lawson. This time, Lawson is in Japan on vacation. But trouble arrives almost immediately—on the train from the airport—when an assassin tries to take down a young Japanese man and his girlfriend. Lawson’s interference is more than just annoying, as the assassin he kills was a member of the local Yakuza, the Kensei, and now the Mob wants vengeance. When Lawson’s former KGB agent girlfriend arrives with troubles of her own, his vacation is no longer the least bit relaxing. All this sounds like the setup for a typical action adventure or espionage novel, but, of course, Lawson is a vampire who works for the vampire governing council, specializing in keeping vampires secret and fixing their problems. Other than being crazy strong and very quick to heal (excellent attributes for a secret agent), Lawson is more like Jason Bourne than Dracula, making this a vampire mystery with broad appeal. --Jessica Moyer

With a possible TV contract in the horizon, and further books in the pipeline, I am sure Jon F Merz is a name that we will hear a lot more of.

A Book and a Chat with Charles Barrett

One of the things that often come up during chats with authors especially newly published is how much work there is after their book has been published. I often say, in many ways that is when the work really starts. Charles Barrett, my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is a person who can help with the media relationship and marketing that so many authors are looking for.

Charlie moved from a background in newspapers on the east coast to being a publicist amongst the stars in Hollywood. His company “The Barrett Company” was set up in Los Angeles in 1992 as a full service media relations and media marketing communications agency.

The company opened a book division some 12 years ago with author and Hollywood producer Marty Jurow (he produced "Breakfast at Tiffany's") and his book "Seein' Stars: A Show Biz Odyssey" from Southern Methodist University Press. Since then the firm has represented such companies as Simon & Schuster, Warner Brothers, Paramount, as well as Johnny Carson, Ed McMahon, Kevin Costner, author Carla Malden (daughter of Oscar winner actor Karl Malden), and other well known companies, personalities and authors.

Charlie shared with us, how he is proud of how the company emphasizes close and personal attention for each of our clients in books, TV and films and how they are available to hear from them almost 24 hours a day with e-mail, texting and phone. From TV shows such as "The Tonight Show," to bestselling books such as "Laughing Out Loud," The Barrett Company “has worked with many clients, in numerous areas. Be it a major publisher or a small self published author, Charlie Barrett and “The Barrett Company” has a media package for you.

A Book and a Chat with Julie Kagawa

Back in October 2010 I had Natasha Wilson, one of the main editors of Harlequin Teen on the show. Amongst the authors we chatted about was Julie Kagawa my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”.

Julie was one of the debut authors of 2010 whose books received rave reviews in the YA blogosphere, successful "Iron King", was followed towards the end of 2010 by a second equally successful book “Iron Daughter” and her third book in the series “Iron Queen” will be launched next month.

In what proved to be a show full of interest, stories and news, as my guest shared with us much about her life and her writing.

we were told how her style has slightly changed from her early writings, which were gothic dark, complete with pictures, written more to shock her teachers rather than encourage her writing. Stories about Hawaii, being chased out of the water several times by sharks and the dangers of jelly fish, brought much laughter to a hugely enjoyable show.

We learned from Julie about some of early jobs, how a job working in a book store, did not last long as, she spent more time reading the books rather stacking them on the shelves. Her time spent teaching a dog to perform magic tricks and the wonderful story of her wrestle with a goat.

The story of her adventure into the realm of publishing started with an somewhat fortuitous meeting with her now agent Laurie McClean was told, and how that lead to her being one of the first authors signed up my Harlequin Teen.

From there her career has gone from success to success with the ”Iron Fey” series, which as we heard, is not now a trilogy abut a series as “Iron Knight” is already underway to follow her latest work “Iron Queen”.

We also gleaned snippets about a new series she has started work on involving vampires, and I wonder if there might yet be another in the Iron Fey down the line about Grimalkin, perhaps an “Iron Cat” book?

A Book and a Chat with Mike L Kilday

Back in 1979, my guest today, Mike L Kilday, went for a deep-trance, past life session with nationally-renown medium Elwood Babbitt, instead of learning about a past life, Mike found himself receiving a prediction of future Earth changes. Ten years and much study later Mike produced his book “Truth Never Changes: Earth Does”.

Weather changes, solar flares, past changes, predictions, are these signs or pointers to a doomsday scenario of the future?

Mike’s book as he explained during an interesting show, was not just based upon the initial session with Elwood Babbitt, but upon what he read and discovered from such sources as the history chanel which lead to him putting together the pieces of the puzzle, that has not only lead to his current book, but also a second and possible third follow up.

As one reviewer stated…

Isn't it good to challenge your natural inclinations? Healthy to step outside your mind's box once in awhile? To avoid the trap Paul Simon identified in The Boxer "...still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest."? Sure it is.

Truth Never Changes: Earth Does:

To assist in finding the Truth, human beings created prophecy. Is prophecy equal to Truth or is it an estimation of it? According to the sources of prophecy, the world as we know it will end on 12/21/2012. The faithful believe they will be ‘raptured’ into heaven beforehand and it is only the unfaithful who will suffer through the tribulation. Regardless of belief, will humanity be swept up into circumstances it neither understands nor controls? Will the events of 2012 happen anyway, or is that date just a mile marker on the road to the future

A Book and a Chat with Shana Mahaffey

Shana Mahaffey my show guest today has a debut book called “Sounds Like Crazy” which is something today’s show could have been like. The normal Skype connection with headset for some reason just would not connect; perhaps the threat of the 1-2 feet of snow we are threatened with tonight was the issue. Whatever, it left me with a mobile phone which having to have my hands free to hunt the internet etc, meant a mobile phone with speaker on. Not too bad? Well when you’re doing the show from a basement with boilers, furnaces and water pipes making their own orchestral noises it certainly could be “Sounds Like Crazy

Still, as they show “the show must go on” and so it did proving itself to be another truly interesting an entertaining thirty minutes.

Shana thought she had been writing “Sounds Like Crazy” until, as we heard an x-boyfriend upon hearing she’d finally completed and published her book reminded her she’d been writing it for more like twenty years.

Shana shared with us the reason and driving force behind her completion of this her debut novel, as well as what she is currently working on. The main part of the show however was the driving force, story line and what went into her production of “Sounds Like Crazy”, how she writes the ending first and then lets the characters lead her to that ending.

Sounds Like Crazy:

Though she doesn’t remember the trauma that caused it, Holly Miller has Dissociative Identity Disorder. Her personality has fractured into five different identities, together known as The Committee. And as much as they make Holly’s life hell, she can’t live without them. Then one of those identities, the flirtatious, southern Betty Jane, lands Holly a voiceover job. Betty Jane wants nothing more than to be in the spotlight. The rest of The Committee wants Betty Jane to shut up. Holly’s therapist wants to get to the bottom of her broken psyche. And Holly? She’s just along for the ride.

Sounds Like Crazy” is one of those books you end up reading, that perhaps you wouldn’t normally have read, only to find out it’s a total gem, and as for the ending… well you’ll have to read it to find out about that.

A Book and a Chat with Connie Joy

My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is Connie Joy, author of our newly-released "Tragedy In Sedona". She has been hitting the chat shows and the book promotion trail as the trial of “James Arthur Ray” comes ever closer, and I am thrilled to have her as a guest.

From being raised in a very religious Roman Catholic family, Connie had a near death experience which put her on a lifelong path as a student of spirituality. During a truly fascinating show we discussed such things as past life regression, something I have touched on before in several shows. Connie herself found from learning self hypnosis to try and help with her sleep issues suddenly to discover a past life.
She has belonged to several spiritual groups, including leading a Sylvia Browne study group, and was trained as a Practitioner of Hypnosis with emphasis in past life regres¬sion.

Then after watching the movie “The Secret”, Connie attended one of James Arthur Ray’s seminars in 2007 with her husband Richard and signed up for his Harmonic Wealth Weekend (HWW) event held in February, 2007. Over the next three years, Connie and Richard participated in or volunteered for 27 James Arthur Ray sem¬inars and events.

We heard through the program how what started off as perhaps a path to enlightenment in the end became obvious to be perhaps nothing more than a scam by a super salesman. How the money in hundreds of thousands paid out by people like Connie, instead of going to do good, seemingly found its way into James Arthur Ray pocket.

From walking on fire and glass to the tragic deaths caused at the "Spiritual Warrior" retreat conceived and hosted by Ray at the Angel Valley Retreat Center, Arizona, where two people died and many others were hospitalized after a “Sweat lodge” exercise.

Connie's book is a fascinating read. We learned how attendees, who had paid up to $10,000 to participate in the retreat, had fasted for 36 hours during a vision quest exercise before the next day's sweat lodge. During this vision quest, participants were left alone in the Arizona desert with a sleeping bag, although Ray offered them Peruvian ponchos for an additional $250. With these same items on sale at under $30, it makes you wonder where the money went to... I guess we’ll find out during the trial.

Needless to say this book and Connie life is so fascinating I am as heard during the show trying to have her back for a longer (penciled in for Saturday April 2nd at 11:00am EST) show where we can find out more about her time from the inception of World Wealth Society (WWS), as one of James Arthur Ray’s inner cir¬cle.

A Book and a Chat with Clare Cooper Marcus

Calre Copper Marcus is a professor in the Departments of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Berkley. Not only that, she is the author of five award winning books, including her latest book “Iona Dreaming: The Healing Power of Place A Memoir.”

Raised in England during the Second World War like many other children she was evacuated from a town into the countryside, she grew up loving nature and knowing the power of finding one’s own place of comfort, be it real or imaginary.

Clare is now internationally recognized for her pioneering research on psychological and sociological aspects of architecture, land-use planning and landscape design.

Indeed her co-edited book on the current movement to bring nature into hospitals “House as Mirror of Self and Healing Gardens” not only was selected as the “Book of the Year” by the Detroit Free Press, but also had Clare making an appearance on Oprah.

About Iona Dreaming:

Her latest book Iona Dreaming: The Healing Power of Place, her deeply restorative memoir of her healing pilgrimage to the Scottish island of Iona. Through sharing her experience, in words and photographs, Clare will invite each of us to breathe new life into our own inner, spiritual journey and consider those places in our lives that help bring us healing and authenticity.

A Book and a Chat with Dr Connie Stapleton

2011 starts off with a group of shows featuring authors who are also doctors. My first guest for this year is Dr. Connie Stapleton author of "Eat It Up! The Complete Mind/Body/Spirit Guide to a Full Life After Weight Loss Surgery".

Connie is a licensed psychologist who is certified addictions counselor working closely with both doctors and potential surgical weight loss patients.

In 2006 she and her husband opened “Mind Body Health Services", the book and her services is aimed to inspire others to help themselves develop a healthier life.

As we learned through a very interesting program, while we hear about many people whose aim it is to lose weight being it from diets or surgery, the hard part is after, what happens on those “biggest loser” type shows once the cameras have gone and the gloss gone from the feeling of success in losing the weight?

Connie’s book “Eat it up!” is written with humor, compassion and a much needed “firm but fair” approach, a book that will not only help the person trying to lose the weight, but also those who are around them. As we heard, it is the sort of book that the patient (for want of a better term) will gain from with each reading.

With over 200,000 people a year undergoing weight loss surgery, this is a book that will be of great help for many people. With a second book underway, I’m sure Dr Connie Stapleton and her books, will be a name that many doctors as well as patients will find a must read.
