A Book and a Chat with Kathi Macias

Today’s guest on “A Book and a Chat” is one of my most popular and frequent visitors Kathi “Easy Writer” Macias. Kathi has come a long way since her early days of writing teens and children’s religious/help books such as “Life Can Be Tough” and “Mummy Where Are You”.

 Her writing grow as did her following with the “Tony Mathews Mystery Series” before she found her calling both the literary market and in her life by spreading the word about issues and Christians around the world facing the ultimate test of faith.

Her book “No Greater Love” about forbidden romance, an unlikely martyr and an even more unlikely hero in South Africa, launched her “Extreme Devotion Series”. This was followed by “More Than Conquers” (Mexico), “Red Ink” (China) and “People of the Book” (Middle East). The series brought many awards and plaudits to Kathi spreading her name as she spread the knowledge of social injustice around the world.

Firmly now in the literary map, Kathi continued with her new “Freedom” series where “Deliver Me From Evil”, “Special Delivery” and “The Deliverer” which through powerful, heart retching words shared a story about human trafficking that brought a fresh influx of readers and awards.

After a break with the first of her Christmas books “A Christmas Journey Home” Kathi is back with another series that will touch people’s hearts as well as educate them, as well as a second Christmas story.

 “Unexpected Christmas Hero” is Kathi’s Christmas book for 2012 which not only has proved yet another huge success but has a story within itself. A powerful story of the homeless and how it can happen to anyone at any time it is a novel that can bring tears and smiles. Willard Parker, the homeless man who appears on the cover of Unexpected Christmas Hero was recognized by a family member and has now been reunited with his daughter and grandchildren.

 “The Moses Quilt” is the first in a new “Quilt” three (for now) book series, which shares life and it’s issues.

Kathi Macias is a master storyteller, weaving a tale within a tale, of factual acounts regarding the life of Harriet Tubman and the Gee's Bend quilters. This book is incredibly well researched and accurate in detail. Family dynamics are beautifully presented through three generations of women and their relationships and importance to one another. 

The characters in this book are well developed and believable, unforgettable characters to love and cherish. "The Moses Quilt" affected me on many personal levels, as a quilter, as a grandparent to a biracial grandson, my personal freedom from prejudice in my own life, and on an emotional level that is unforgettable. I highly recommend this sensitive, poignant, well-written, authentic story within a story! I will read this book again and again.

A Book and a Chat with Kathi Macias

Kathi “easy writer” Macias is one of the shows most frequent and most popular guests with over 40 books so far produced as well as numerous articles and reports. Her success has just gone from strength to strength with last year alone her book “Red Ink” winning the AWSA Golden Scrolls Novel of the Year Award as well as finaled in the Carol Awards through ACFW. She was also 2011 Author of the Year from BooksandAuthors.net.

Each time Kathi comes on the show we learn so much more not just about her and her writing but also about items that she brings forth from all the corners of the world in a format that has readers always asking for more from this prolific writer.

When she was last on the show we learned about her Extreme Devotion series which consisted of four standalone books “No greater Love”, “More Than Conquers”, “Red Ink” and “Children of the Book”. During the show we learned how with “Red Ink” winning the golden scroll award, news of the success even reached China, and eventually the lady who the book was loosely based on, who has now been released from prison, and you never know, Kathi’s book might have aided her release.

During the previous show we also learned of Kathi’s plans for her first Christmas book, this has proved such a success that the publisher wants it to be an annual event, and this year’s book is already written.

Kathi’s latest set of books is the “Freedom Series” what can be called a “fiction with a mission” offering a trilogy based on the topic of human trafficking.

The first book, “Deliver Me From Evil”, was released in September 2011, with book two, “Special Delivery”, released last month and the final book, “The Deliverer”, set to release in Fall 2012. Though much of this series takes place right here in the States, as Kathi wanted readers to understand that human trafficking doesn’t just happen in faraway lands, the books will also contain a strong sub-plot set in the Golden Triangle area of Thailand as well as several scenes in Mexico.

In book two of the “Freedom” series, readers find Mara fighting against her attraction to Bible college student Jonathan Flannery even while wrestling with risking her own precarious safety to become involved in the rescue of another girl who is pregnant and desperately wants to escape her captors and save her own life, as well as her child’s.

Halfway around the world in a brothel in Thailand, a young girl is rescued with the promise of being reunited with her younger sister who was adopted by an interracial couple in the States, friends of Jonathan’s family. Meanwhile, Jefe—Mara’s uncle, who held her as a sex slave in his brothel in San Diego for years—seeks revenge for Mara’s testimony that put him behind bars for life.

Will his underworld connections be successful in kidnapping and killing the girl who believes she has finally won her freedom?

I am thankful that the beginning of Special Delivery was a refresher of sorts because it had been awhile since I read Deliver Me from Evil. Within minutes of picking it up, I was completely engrossed. So much so, that I read it from cover to cover. I found it impossible to put down with the character's lives hanging in the balance. For me the book was riveting. Just as it is with a really good movie, by the time I'd finished the book, I was emotionally spent. This is something that I've rarely experienced from a fictional work.

It was all-too-real.

And that is what makes Kathi Macias' work so outstanding. Not only does she tackle dark issues which society and the church seem to overlook but she also does it in a very compelling way. A Book and a Chat with Meg Moseley

It's my pleasure to have as a guest on today’s show Meg Moseley and her debut novel "When Sparrows Fall".

As a girl she wanted to be a writer, in fact as she shared with us on the show it was in her blood, her grandmother is said to have helped the family through the depression with her writings.

However it was not until she had nearly finished her career as a home school mom that she could devote much time to writing fiction. She says it took the scenic route to publication, with many slowdowns and detours along the way, but it was worth the wait.

Yes it was worth the wait and the debut book she has produced “When Sparrows Fall” is a novel that has been worth waiting for.

About “When Sparrows Fall”

Miranda Hanford, an isolated homeschooling widow, needs to break her ties to a cultic group. Jack Hanford, her estranged brother-in-law, is an outspoken professor who helps in her hour of need but challenges her choices at every turn. Miranda wants safety and security for her children; Jack values freedom above security but doesn't understand that breaking free may cost Miranda everything, including her children.

While you might expect the book perhaps to be preachy, or sugar coated robots terrorized by a spiritual leader and that is more than just a book that would only appeal to Christians. In fact it’s a lot more than that showing the importance of perceived safety and freedom, love and forgiveness, and the ever-strengthening ties of a family.

It is a book that would be great for discussion groups for instance, with humor intermixed with romance and religion, and don’t forget the sometimes sticky subject of home schooling.

A Book and a Chat with Kathi Macias

Always welcome Kathi Macias makes a return visit on today’s “A Book and a Chat”, to share with us about the success of her last book “Red Ink”, her great new novel “People of the Book” her new “Freedom” series and her first Christmas book.

Along with all that we also heard how “Easy Writer” as she is known and her husband have replaced their Harley’s with a sunburst orange Corvette… talk about a packed program!

Kathi is a multi-award winning writer who has authored more than 30 books and ghostwritten several others.

A former newspaper columnist and string reporter, she has taught creative and business writing in various venues and has been a guest on many radio and television programs. Kathi is a popular speaker at churches, women’s clubs and retreats, and writers’ conferences, and was named 2008 Member of the Year by AWSA (Advanced Writers and Speakers Association).

Her “Devotion” series previously consisting of “No Greater Love” set in South Africa, “More Than Conquerors” set in Mexico, the recently nominated for the Golden Scroll Award “Red Ink” set in China, has now been joined by “People of the Book” which is set in Saudi Arabia.

With all the current upheaval in Saudi, regarding woman driving and having their own voice the book as we discussed during a really interesting and entertaining show, with this prolific writer.


About “People of the Book”:

In a nutshell, it deals with the very real issue of honor killings. Here is a brief synopsis:

Eighteen-year-old Farah, who lives inRiyadh,Saudi Arabia, with her family, wants nothing more than to develop a deeper, more meaningful devotion to her Muslim faith. She sees the month of Ramadan as her chance to draw nearer to Allah, and she pursues that goal throughout the holiday. All goes well until the prophet Isa—Jesus—appears to her in a dream and calls her to Himself. At the same time, her only brother, Kareem, who has never liked Farah, actively seeks an opportunity to expose her for the sham he believes she is.

Meanwhile, Farah’s seventeen-year-old cousin, Nura, has begun to frequent an online chat room where former Muslims gather to discuss their new faith, based on their belief that Isa is much more than a Muslim prophet—He is actually the Son of God. While there, Nura becomes acquainted with an American girl of Muslim ancestry—now a devout Christian named Sara—and a friendship quickly develops. However, Sara has problems of her own due to her fifteen-year-old brother Emir’s involvement with a gang.
The lives of Farah, Nura, and Sara ultimately dovetail until each finds herself at a place where her faith is put to the test. Will they remain faithful to the end? Will God protect and keep them safe in the midst of persecution and treachery? Or will they be required to pay the ultimate price for their faith?

The book has already received rave reviews and I’m sure it will reap even more rewards for Kathi.

As well as the news of her new book, Kathi also shared with us details of her new “Freedom” series which is due out later this year with the first book being “Deliver Me from Evil”. Also the fact that she is bringing out her first ever Christmas book “A Christmas Journey Home” which will also be out later this year.
