A Book and a Chat with Natalie Gayle

In her teens Natalie Gayle, author of Finding Trust and the guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” took an occupational test and it said I should be a writer. She did not think anything more of it creating a career as a project manager in IT, all the time though this longing to become a writer was there bubbling under the surface.

As we learned during an entertaining though due to phone issues a sometimes interrupted show, this hidden need to write finally produced Natalie’s debut novel Finding Trust” which was released earlier this year and has been followed by “Finding Judgment”.

Finding Trust is not your normal romance novel, it is part contemporary romance, part romantic suspense, and part science fiction ...or paranormal romance with some urban fantasy thrown in for good measure. The result however is a book that many are already stating is a “must read” and one that you just can’t put down.

About “Finding Trust”:

He’s hot, sexy, and leads a double life. Sometimes in the limelight, mostly in the shadows. Brayden James holds fast to a secret that’s more than his to share.

She’s a singularly focused veterinarian out for a rare night of fun with friends, at a New Year’s Eve rock concert. Going home with the lead guitarist was furthest thing from Rihanna Mason’s mind when the night began.

When Rihanna inadvertently becomes the target of a deadly terrorist plot using the Hendra virus as a biological weapon, Brayden is forced to reveal his other life.  His job is to keep her safe and together they must stop the terrorists before it’s too late. But what happens when she becomes more to him than just the assignment?

Will the secret he cannot disclose ultimately prove too much for Rihanna’s fragile trust in relationships? Or will he finally break through the double brick walls around her heart, where every other man has failed?

As one reviewer stated about what she liked about the book…

WHAT I LIKED: Everything. I was drawn in from the very first page and the connection I felt to the characters was intense. Instead of feeling like I was the reader, I felt like I was every characters; I loved when they did, cried when they did, jumped in surprise when they did, etc. I felt like these characters and the story were pouring out of the pages and into my apartment. The author is very talented and has gained a new fan... Me.

Well reviewer I too have joined the band of fans of Natalie Gayle

A Book and a Chat with M.D. Kaczkowski

My guest today on “A Book and a Chat” is an author, artist and medical inventor, with many of his technologies in use by hundreds of patients worldwide. MD Kaczkowski is founder of The Center for Alloplastic Facial Reconstruction in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he serves as president and lead practitioner, designing and fitting ocular and facial prosthetic reconstructions.

His debut novel “The Seers” is called a Scilestial novel, a word that comes from the combination of words: “Science” and “Celestial”. It is books perhaps unlike you’ve ever read before a mixture of detective, science fiction, celestial or spirituality. Using technology, it gives us readers a multi-media experience with QR codes, illustrations and video links sprinkled throughout.

M.D. Kaczkowski sheds light on the unseen laws of the universe with a fantastical, page-turning thriller. The Seers introduces a world where good battles evil for the world’s soul. The fate of humanity rests in the hands of the Seers, a handful of humans with the rare ability to see the unseen, who call their Angels into action to do battle with Demons. This captivating, fast-paced story blends two classic genres: part apocalypse and part detective story.

A Book and a Chat with Daniel Haight

Daniel Haight is today’s guest on “A Book and a Chat” raised on Star Wars and Star Trek he has always been a fan of science-fiction. He wrote his first story when in Sixth Grade, an epic tome featuring the adventures of a guy named ‘Daytona Titanium’. From this early experience Daniel went on to write short stories which received rave reviews by fans and professionals alike from all over the world.

This success and contact from fans lead him to make the step and create “the big one” his debut novel “Flotilla”.

About Flotilla (Taken from Daniels Web Site)

Flotilla is the gripping post-apocalyptic science fiction novel that has been described as “Mad Max meets Master & Commander.” Jim Westlake is a teen in the near future just out of rehab raising fish with his father on an ocean colony off of the coast of Los Angeles. Jim wants to put his past behind him but the fact that they live with several thousand strange and dangerous people, doesn’t help.

All of this changes when disaster strikes. Multiple terrorist attacks force Jim’s father to abandon him and head to the mainland. Now Jim has to save his sister from angry drug dealers and pirates. How will Jim rise above his past to survive his future? The answer will keep readers hooked until the very last page.

This first book of what now promises to be a series has already received some great reviews and is being enjoyed by all ages. As one reviewer wrote…

Every once in a while, a book will come along and remind you what storytelling is all about. Flotilla is one of those books. A fast-paced tale with plenty of laughs and thrills while a troubled teen survives two very crazy summers on an experimental ocean-based colony.

There's two things I love about Flotilla: Interesting ideas and lovable characters. You won't have any trouble identifying with Jim, the recently-sober teenager who has to overcome some poor choices and grow up fast among some dangerous and hysterical adventures. The lifestyle on the Colony in Flotilla has a lot to recommend it - living aboard a yacht while raising fish for sale in a community that's long on freedom and short on safety.

Despite his poor start, Jim has to take a big step forward to adulthood when his estranged father is drafted and sent to shore due to a national emergency. Some angry drug pirates, the DEA and some half-crazed colonists line up to exact revenge - now what is he supposed to do? I found Jim's fear and love to be a great metaphor for some scary life choices that I had to make when I was his age.

A second book is already planned along with a book of Daniels short stories and I can see the name of Daniel Haight being on many people’s must read books.

A Book and a Chat with Robert JR Graham

Robert JR Graham has over the last 20 years focused on self-development and personal mastery, dedicating his life to uncovering the deeper truths within us all. This has included research into various topics such as quantum physics, eastern mysticism, psychology, philosophy, martial arts, and many other subjects leaving no stone unturned.

Taking this experience and interweaving it with his own personal adventure of self-discovery, vivid dreams, and unique life experiences Robert has produced the first book in what promises to be a fast paced fiction series called “The Seventh Journey”.

About “The Seventh Journey” : (taken from Robert’s web site)

Toronto, ON – Seventh Journey is a thrill-seeking adventure that will leave you questioning what you really know and believe about the reality we find ourselves consumed with. In the series’ first self-titled book, Graham weaves a fantasy story line that illustrates the power of self-realization.

In Seventh Journey readers meet Jacob Cross, a staff scientist at Netex, an advanced research firm with more than one secret agenda. Using a sound wave technology called Auditum, the nefarious research firm develops a mind-altering headset with the power to control minds and even hurl users into a different dimension.

Cross had been deeply involved in developing the headset and was lead to believe the technology would serve various medical applications. Now terrified that his invention will be used to enslave millions, Jacob sends himself through the dimensional portal. But will he be able to stop the firm’s devious plan?

Recipient of the coveted Editor’s Choice and Rising Star Awards on behalf of Publisher iUniverse.”

The response so far to this first book in the series has been really good, comments such as “I got hooked in the story and now I can't wait for the next book” and “found while I was reading, the narrative came to life in my head which kept making me turn the pages” are sprinkled amongst the reviews.

One reviewer wrote…

Seventh Journey is an incredible story of Jacob Cross, a researcher who wakes up with limited memory. Originally Cross is working on a cure for insomnia, or so he thought, but those employing his research have other plans for his work. They want Cross to develop a form of mind control that would give them a tool they believe will allow them to control the masses. This book introduces alternate universes or realms where Jacob meets Tamara but when he returns to his own realm he cannot remember clearly if his trip to the alternate universe was a dream or reality. And to add to the chaos of his limited memory he is also a suspect in a murder. This was a fantastic creative addition to the sci-fi genre and I am beyond excited to follow Cross' adventures further.

Well with the second book already almost completed and due out next year, readers will soon get their wish.

A Book and a Chat with Eugene C Myers

Eugene Myers is the author of the young adult science fiction novel “Fair Coin”, in fact it’s Eugene’s debut novel though he published numerous fiction and fantasy short stories in a number of magazines and anthologies such as Sybil’s Garage, Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine, Sporty Spec: Games of the Fantastic, and Touched by Wonder: A Symphony of Fantastic Tales. His romantic short story featuring horny zombies, “In the Closet”, received an Honorable Mention in The Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror 2008; his nostalgic short story about horny cavemen, “My Father’s Eyes”, also got an Honorable Mention in The Best Horror of the Year: Volume 3; and he was a finalist in L. Ron Hubbard’s Writers of the Future Contest.

Fair Coin” as previously stated, is Eugene's first novel, the story went through four revisions before he thought it was up to querying agents, this was followed by months before and further edit before going into submission. Two years, several near misses and a lot of rejection letters later and the book was sold to Pyr.

It then took another fifteen months before the book was finally published, though during that time Eugene wrote three other novels, including the planned sequel “Quantum Coin".

About “Fair Coin”:

Sixteen-year-old Ephraim Scott is horrified when he comes home from school and finds his mother unconscious at the kitchen table, clutching a bottle of pills. The reason for her suicide attempt is even more disturbing: she thought she’d identified Ephraim’s body at the hospital that day.

Among his dead double’s belongings, Ephraim finds a strange coin—a coin that grants wishes when he flips it. With a flick of his thumb, he can turn his alcoholic mother into a model parent and catch the eye of the girl he’s liked since second grade. But the coin doesn’t always change things for the better. And a bad flip can destroy other people’s lives as easily as it rebuilds his own.

The coin could give Ephraim everything he’s ever wanted—if he learns to control its power before his luck runs out.

The book has received some fantastic reviews including this from one of the top Sic-Fi web sites “io9.com”…

Tired of cookie-cutter young-adult novels? The cure awaits, in the shape of E.C. Myers' astounding Fair Coin—a book which, among other things, achieves the feat of seeming like a dark fairy tale and a clever science fiction epic, rolled into one. It's a fast-moving book full of twists and cool character moments and definitely ideal for adults who miss the days of engaging, idea-driven science fiction. ..." --io9

A Book and a Chat with James Bottino

James Bottino, my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” has followed several paths during his life and faced some real challenges, the latest of which was to publish his debut novel “The Canker Death

James is basically an English teacher and computer geek rolled into one. His early years of teaching high school English in a suburb of Chicago being supplemented by a double life in the deep corners of the night hacking and building computers and networks.

Word of this second pastime, unbeknownst to James, leaked out, and he started receiving employment offers. Son what was a hobby became a profession and he became a senior computer / networking administrator for a scientific research laboratory.

Far from living his dream, just six months into this position, however, tragedy struck when, at the age of 31, James was diagnosed with cancer. Given limited odds to survive James set about facing the challenge of the thought of is infant daughter not remembering him if he died, James set about the fight of his life, enduring massive doses of chemotherapy that killed the cancer but nearly killed him as well.

After years of struggle, he survived, but only after enduring systemic nerve damage from the treatments that left him permanently photophobic, phonophobic and with frequent difficulty in using his hands. These events focused his efforts and helped him to prevail in his dual goals: being a father to his daughter and completing his first novel, THE CANKER DEATH. Even the style that James decide to write in was a challenge, let’s face it if you can beat cancer, what sort of challenge is to write in first person?

About The Canker Death:

When the reclusive, cynical systems administrator, Petor Fidelistro, discovers that one of his own servers has been cracked late one night, he makes it his personal business to track down the perpetrator. What his search uncovers thrusts him, unaware, into a mad shifting between worlds, time and alien minds.

Fighting to keep his grip on reality, and forcing him to cope with his past, Petor finds himself uncontrollably transitioning between sentient minds that range from semi-conscious to dominant, from beings whose bodies and identities he can control, to those who control him so fully as to be unaware of his presence.

As the story unfolds, Petor gathers clues in a twisting mystery that sends him shifting between the mourning child Nanzicwital; the golem giant Faskin; the lascivious, female ambassador Desidia; and Nokinis, an insane prisoner with whom Petor battles for mastery of his own memories. As he struggles to make sense of what is happening to him, Petor finds himself embroiled in the tumultuous upheaval of a ubiquitous society that transcends life, itself.

Having beaten yet another challenge, James is now embarking on a further novel, this time aimed more the at the young teen market.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining thirty minutes with my guest James Bottino.

A Book and a Chat with Stephanie Osborn

My guest today is Stephanie Osborn, former rocket scientist, payload flight controller and a veteran of over twenty years of working in the civilian space program, as well as various military space defense programs.

She has always enjoyed writing, and as we heard during the program actually wrote Sherlock Holmes story when she was in fourth grade that was rejected because the teacher thought it was a copy of an actual Conan Doyle story, it is a shame that story no longer exists as I’m sure it would be amongst the other wonderful novels created by Stephanie since her retirement from the space race.

Her first book “Burnout” was so close to home and actual incidents that subsequently happened. Along the way she has worked with both Darrel Bain and Travis S Taylor on further Science Fiction series “The Cresperian Series” and “Extraction Point”.

In her latest production “The Displaced Detective Series” Stephanie has come full circle as it brings back her love for Sherlock Holmes. The first two books in the series “The Arrival” and “At Speed” are already out and receiving great reviews.

About “The Displaced Detective Series”

This is a science fiction mystery in which the brilliant hyperspatial physicist, Dr. Skye Chadwick, discovers that there are alternate realities, and said alternates
are often populated by those we consider only literary characters. Her pet research, Project:

Tesseract, hidden deep under Schriever AFB, is her means of looking in on these continua. In one particular reality, continuum 114, a certain Victorian detective (who, in fact, exists in several continua) was to have died along with his arch-nemesis at the Reichenbach Falls. Knee-jerking, Skye intervenes, rescuing her hero, who inadvertently flies through the tesseract wormhole connecting his universe with ours, while his enemy plunges to his death. Unable to send Holmes
back without causing devastating continuum collapse due to non-uniqueness, he must stay in our world and learn to adapt to the 21st century.

Meanwhile, the Schriever AFB Dept of Security discovers a spy ring working to dig out the details of - and possibly sabotage - Project: Tesseract. Can Chadwick help Holmes come up to speed in modern investigative techniques in time to
stop the spies? Will Holmes be able to thrive in our modern world? Is Chadwick now Holmes' new "Watson" - or more?

And what happens next?

Well we will find out, as this series promises to run and run as Stephanie has the next two in the editing/publishing stages, book 5 is being written, book 6 is planned, and book 7 is actually finished but needs beefing up. As we heard this prolific author is also producing and co-producing further nvels in her other series as well.

A Book and a Chat with Braxton Cosby

On today’s “A Book and a Chat” the book being discussed is “Proto Star” the first book in the “Star-Crossed Saga”: it is a magnificent start to an inventive series by my guest the talented debut author. Braxton Cosby (yes, Bill’s nephew aka Dr. Huxtable), With this debut book he definitely makes his mark in the science fiction, young adult and fantasy genres. In fact, Braxton has created a whole new genre ”Sci-fance”, a rich blend of science fiction and romance, a name that simply makes sense.

Braxton is a dreamer with a vision of continuously evolving and maximizing the untapped potential of the human genome. A physical therapist by background, Braxton received his Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate from the University of Miami, his fascination of science grew into an obsession of Sci-fi and on one unassuming Sunday this self-proclaimed romantic as we heard during the show, decided to pursue a 'calling' to create a new genre of writing.

Proto Star is the first of the Star-Crossed Saga trilogy, a mix of believable science fiction, no ray guns or weird creatures, set on earth it asks the question of what would win between “love and duty”. Written in sharp, strong prose, it is appealing, engaging and well-written and has received numerous five star reviews.

About Proto Star:

Star-Crossed Saga: ProtoStar begins by asking the question, love or duty? As human beings, we are all given free will. We are all faced with choices. We are all responsible for the consequences of our actions. Cosby poses these questions to the protagonist, Bounty Hunter Prince William Derry, and to his readers.

On the threshold of Civil War, the Torrian Alliance presses forward with its obligation of eliminating the universe of Star-children as a means to contain an intergalactic evil. King Gregorio Derry takes direction from his Council and sends his only son from Fabricius to Earth on an assignment to restore honor to his family. Bounty Hunter Prince William Derry has travels thousands of light-years, on a mission to fulfill an age old prophecy.

Sydney Elaine learns first hand, what the old adage, “Be careful what you wish for” means when she meets William Derry. Fate steps in, leaving Prince Derry to curtail his scheduled assignation of Sydney. It is during this delay that a bond is formed, leaving both awakened for the first time. Everything William believes is challenged.
Meanwhile, a diabolical act of treason is underway back home on Fabricius. It is this contemptible act of collusion and monarchical unraveling, that threatens to extinguish the lives of those William holds dear and destroy his dad’s noble birthright.

Will William be able to complete his task or will he sacrifice everything to follow his heart?

As we learned during the show the second book “Super Nova” is already in the editing stage, with the third book underway. I am sure the series would make a great film, something we discussed during the show, even to the fact have having a part for Uncle Bill.

As one reviewer put it…

You had me in the first chapter! I couldn't put it down. Very refreshing! Not like anything I have ever read before. I loved it! We want more!

Reviewer, your wish has been granted, and I’m sure we’ll hear a lot more from Braxton Cosby

A Book and a Chat with DCS

It’s always good to have return visitors on the show, learning about what they have been up to since they last appeared on the show as well as hopefully a new book or two. Today I am pleased to have such a return visitor, Sci-Fi Author, Spiritual Activist and Radio Show Host, DCS to chat about her latest novel “The Ascension” the second book in “The Synarchy Series”.

DCS spent time in the corporate world in records management, and briefly considered the possibility of making a living converting corporate paper into searchable tiffs. She then realized that the telling of well researched stories was her first, true love. Synarchy Book 1 - "The Awakening" is her first novel and was named a finalist in the 2008 Best Book Awards sponsored by USA Book News. Synarchy Book 2: The Ascension is her latest novel and is being adapted into a major motion picture. Six novels in the Synarchy Series are intended for release with Book 3: SVT and Book 4: The Black Widow due out in 2011.

About Synarchy: "I will die to see my will done. And it will be done."

A plan is exposed, centuries in the making and so sinister not even the legend himself could have predicted the depth of its impact on the world. In his lifetime Stefano Terenzio had a merciless ambition for absolute power. Two generations later the shock wave he ignited was still being felt. Now, as the world inches closer to 2012 sides are chosen, families divide and an epic battle begins that will determine whether mankind continues existing in a world of lies or shatters the chains that have held us prisoner since his-story was written.

Shocking yet hopeful, Synarchy slowly unravels the tightly laced reality we have created for ourselves. Blending the metaphysical with conspiracy, fact with fiction, debut author DCS has opened up a world that will force you to rethink everything you believe about your own. The knowledge within provokes the question: do you really want to know?

Sort of The Goodfather meets Star Gate, book one launched DCS on a path that as she shared with us during the program is now, with the growing appreciation of her writing along with book two is starting to see not only some reward but also a growing following that is already baying for books three and four to be produced.
We learned during the program how much as a writer DCS has learned from her first book enabling “The Ascension” to not only increase her success but also having it optioned for a movie.

So sit back and listen to today's thoroughly interesting and entertaining show as I host today's "A Book and a Chat with DCS".

A Book and a Chat with Robert "Doc" Gowdy

My guest on today's show Robert "Doc" Gowdy has been writing seriously, albeit academically, for a little over fifteen years. Now he has moved from the dryness of academic writing to a world of his own creation in his debut fiction novel, "Captain Bonny Morgan: The Cassandra Prophesy".

Captain Bonny Morgan: The Cassandra Prophesy is about the first steps in bringing down an evil galactic empire, the empire of Emperor Tulla the First. Captain Bonny Morgan, a beautiful galactic pirate, is contracted by an unknown “entity” to kidnap Princess Cosette, the Emperor’s step-daughter, in an effort to set events into motion. After Captain Morgan kidnaps Princess Cosette, her sister, Princess Lysette, sets out to find her kidnapped sister with the help of her beautiful but extremely mischievous slavegirl, Tink. The story is all about Tink and Princess Lysette’s adventure, and all the political intrigues, hidden agendas, unexpected revelations, and bold, daring gambits by everyone involved at every level of the conspiracy to overthrow the Emperor Tulla.

The book which is the first of a trilogy has enabled “Doc” to bring some of his favorite characters from literature and movies into a smart, entertaining, and often funny, adventure involving galactic pirates trying to overthrow an evil Imperial government. It is full of entertaining characters, a down to “earth” adventure novel set in the science fiction genre laced throughout with subtle and blatant humor.

During the show, “Doc” discussed how many of the characters came about from the playful, mischievous, and funny Tink (a full grown version of Tinker Bell), to Captain Bonny Morgan herself, (even the name is a mixture of Anne Bonny and Henry Morgan). The whole inspiration behind the story, the characters as well as how the various steps to production of his book were discussed by “Doc”.

The topic of how characters can lead you off on different tangents and the use of the internet and virtual book tours was discussed in what was a really entertaining and enjoyable thirty minute show, as I hosted “A Book and a Chat with Robert "Doc" Gowdy”.
