A Book and a Chat Final Show of the Year

Today is the last “A Book and a Chat” of 2012, it is show number 562, which means there has been well over 100 shows during the year covering every subject and age group.

This last show is enabling me to do two things, firstly to share a follow up to Thursday’s show about “Words Heal” and I make no bones about adding the write up to Thursday’s show at the end of this blog.
The feedback so far has been great, and I know at this time of year people have many other matters on their mind, but it has very gratifying to hear from so many people about this effort from authors and readers to aid the people of Newtown and Sandy Hook.

Secondly today’s show allows me to join the “Next Big Thing” event that authors and bloggers are currently taking part in to share their current work of “Next Big Thing”.

Skipping from one link to another I was able to “share” or promote several authors “work in progress” during the show including the likes of Shannon Delany and Beth Fehlbaum. It was interesting to be able to find many new authors and several books that I might well follow up on to see if I can get the authors on the show.

I hope some of the visits sparks your interest during the shows.

WORDS HEAL

The group is “Words Heal” and hope  this blog and the show will pass on their message.

Many people have been wondering how they can help the school, children, and families of those affected by the shooting in Newtown and many groups have been collecting teddy bears and school supplies. Here is another option for you.

Several CT children's book and YA authors are in preliminary discussions with the Newtown school district to bring healing all affected by the horrific event. We are working in conjunction with grief counselors and a school psychologist to teach students how to journal through their emotions. We are hoping that through writing these children find hope and a way of expressing their thoughts and emotions. We are asking for people to donate journals and inscribe their own encouraging words to the student recipient on the inside cover. If you feel moved to donate to Words Heal, please send your inscribed journals to:

Words Heal
c/o Knee High Academy
43 Hall Avenue
Wallingford, CT 06492

All donations should be received by January 31st and please know we will send all journals directly to the Newtown school guidance department. We will keep you posted as to our progress.

Instructions:
1. All journals donated should be inscribed by the donor with a positive message.
(preferably, no spiral notebooks)
2. Lined journals for student 3rd grade and up.
3. Primary journals for younger students (half lined half blank for illustration)
4. Journals must be received by January 31st

A Book and a Chat about Words Heal

Tonight’s scheduled guest had to cancel, so I took the chance to share with the listeners about a group I have been working with and sharing with that offer a chance for authors and readers to help those recovering from the tragic happenings in Newtown/Sand Hook here in Connecticut.

The group is “Words Heal” and hope  this blog and the show will pass on their message.

A Book and a Chat with Missy Wolfe

One of the wonderful things about hosting a radio show is that you never stop learning from the shows. Today’s show with Missy Wolfe is one that I learned many new things about America and its history.

Missy’s book “Insubordinate Spirit: A True Story of Life and Loss In Earliest America, 1610-1665" , not only educates one into subjects that many in America will never even have heard of but tells a true story that would put many a soap opera to shame.

The book took seven years of research during which time Missy turned up much unknown or forgotten pieces of American history, from the fact that Greenwich was the border between New England and New Holland to a forgotten Indian tribe whose name seems to have skipped the history books.

The book is a true story of Elizabeth Fones Winthrop Feake Hallett, one of the first settlers in 17th Century America, and niece, then daughter-in-law, of Puritan leader John Winthrop, whose band of English immigrants started the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630.

About Insubordinate Spirit: (taken from Missy web site)

Elizabeth’s first husband died his first day in America and her second went insane. Denied permission to marry her third, she lived with him regardless and faced a death sentence for it. Leaving the safety of Boston’s Bay Colony, she settled on the untamed border between New England and New Netherland that is now Connecticut near Manhattan. She faced threats here as well from soldiers defending Dutch jurisdiction and angry Munsees who detested her European presence.

An imperfect new American, she watched as the Dutch launched what  may have been the largest massacre of the Indians in the northeast from her West India Company property in Old Greenwich. Moving more deeply into New Netherland to save herself from Indian retaliation and her own still-threatening English, she became part of New Netherland’s Dutch society and did pay the price of continued Indian anger. Surviving the turmoil of three colliding cultures, she sought a better engagement with God, if not man, and successfully championed a transformative new religion. Punished for this too, she embodied an emerging new American persona, one that rejected an unworkable past and embraced a future that nurtured the spirit of her intrepid life.

There is way to much to explain about in this blog, it is one of the most fascinating true stories I have had on my 500 plus radio shows and one I highly recommend. Listen to the show and see what you think.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining show as I chat with my special guest today on A Book and a Chat with Missy Wolfe

A Book and a Chat with Linda Ballesteros

It is funny how shows seem to run into each other in themes, even though shows are booked months ahead and with no planning themes just seem to happen. At the moment it seems we are having a of shows about life and business, sort of self help authors. Following Charmaine Hammond’s  appearance on the Tuesday’s show, my guest today is Linda Ballesteros.

Linda Ballesteros inspires and empowers others to pursue their dreams and accomplish their goals. A modern renaissance woman, Linda is a motivational speaker, business woman, a coach and leader for women in business, author and radio show host.

A successful business woman, banker, Linda went to a meeting about networking and found she just did not understand what was being said or described. Taking matters into her own hands thinking there might be other people who had heard of networking but like herself had not the starting point, Linda set up her own business women’s networking group, Wine, Women and Wealth.  The organization grew to more than 300 members during it’s first year and recently merged with a nationwide organization where she served as the Texas Regional Director.

Using this background Linda has now not only become a much sort after speaker but has also shared he knowledge in her book  “Your Pot of Gold is a Handshake Away : A step by step plan to quickly grow your business through referrals”

About "Your Pot of Gold is a Handshake Away":

Transformation is the goal of this book which can take time and intention. To make the concept easy, Linda designed the book to include: - A quote from someone famous that you may respect. - An expansion of the quote's concept as it relates to business by referral. - Exercises that can cause specific actions that will embed the concept on deeper level into your lifestyle. If you follow these steps is no doubt in my mind that your goal of transformation will be achieved. You will earn more money and attain sure confidence that your business will continue to expand.

The book is a simple read, easy to follow and has been very well received.

As one reviewer put it…

Linda absolutely puts in plain English and logic; the importance and value of referrals. There are other books that will talk about this subject but YOUR POT OF GOLD is the only resource that completes the study and application of how to increase business through the referral system. It's not a boring encyclopedia type book--it's a handy, use-it-now book that will create growth immediately.

Linda shares her knowledge not only through her book and inspirational speaking, but also through her own radio show “Power Talk with Linda Ballesteros”.
