A Book and a Chat with Anthony D Collins

My guest today is Anthony D. Collins, who is the definition of positivity and the embodiment of kinetic energy.

That is, his thoughts set in motion truly have the power to bring forth change within. His defining moment came in 2009 at the age of 34, when he realized he was unhappy and sought out to gain his happiness. His testimony touches others and is proof of how someone who once led a dark life can light a spark in others that illuminates lives. His happiness is proof of what a life with energy, selflessness and a spiritual journey can do. Anthony helps people understand life isn’t about rushing to the finish line, but transitioning from one moment to the next with success. “The number one goal in our lives should be obtaining happiness within first. We are no good to anyone or anything if we are not happy,” Anthony says. “Once we are happy there is nothing that we cannot achieve for ourselves or our loved ones.”

Anthony has spread his inspiration to positively impact others firstly across the airwaves co-hosting the Blog Talk Radio show “Laugh & Tears” which he was nominated for Best Male Host in 2011 and also nominated for Best Show of the Year in 2011. Anthony currently hosts “The Anthony & B.Fly Radio Show” on Blog Talk Radio which provides informative and thought provoking topics that motivate their listeners to make a positive change in their lives.  Anthony has also participated in relationship panels.  As a man he is open freely to sharing his life experience.

Now Anthony has shared this powerful insight in his book “Life is Outstanding”.

In “Life is Outstanding”, Anthony D. Collins allows readers to not only read about his life, but also learn from his challenges. He also provides the steps that he needed to take when at the lowest point, as well as how he continues to achieve greatness in his life.

About “Life is Outstanding”:

Anthony has always had a purpose that he tried to deny over and over again. But without any more delays he finally took all the confirmations from friends and associates that his positive words should be shared with the world. His life testimonies have helped people all over the world. Anthony decided that he could do more and that is exactly what he is doing with this book. He always says just sit back and allow him to do all the positive work and fill your lives with inspiration.

A Book and a Chat with Melissa Landers

Melissa Landers my guest today, was one of the Class of 2K13 however her debut YA Sci-Fi romance novels publication was delayed so she is now my first member of the Class of 2K14 to appear on this year’s “A Book and a Chat” shows.

Not that she is a debut author over all writing under the name “Macy Beckett” she is the author of “The Sultry Springs” series and “The Dumont Bachelors” series of romance novels.

Her novel “Alientated” though the first book she ever wrote, has taken a few years to finally see the light of day, but believe me it is a book well worth waiting for, and from the number of pre read request on sites such as “Goodreads” it seems many others believe the same.

About “Alienated”: (taken from OneFourKidLit site)

Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.

Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.

Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.

But when Cara’s classmates get swept up by anti-L’eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn’t safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara’s locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.

Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she’s fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.

Alienated was finally released this month receiving great reviews many already asking for book 2 which is already written and will be released early 2015.

A Book and a Chat with Cindy Freland

My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is Cindy Freland.  Cindy founded Maryland Secretarial Services, Inc. in 1997. She has won three awards and teaches business workshops at two local community colleges, a senior center and two chamber of commerce offices. She offers word processing, data entry, desktop publishing and transcription to businesses of all sizes, government agencies, non-profit organizations and individuals throughout the United States. Her passion is teaching workshops, designing and managing Facebook pages and helping authors get their books on Amazon.

As well as writing many business books, including "Easy Guide to Your Facebook Business Page” something that many authors would I’m sure be interested in reading, Cindy has also written several children’s books. These children’s books include the wonderfully “Mud Pies” and “Felix the Purple Giant”.

Now Cindy has started a new series of books which are not only fun to read but will educate both the person being read to and the reader.

The first of this “Chesapeake Bay Adventure" series is “Jordan the Jelly Fish”

About “Jordan the Jelly Fish”:

Jordan the Jellyfish is lost and needs to find her way home from Sandy Point State Park to Mayo Beach, Maryland. She encounters danger and fun with her friends in and above the Chesapeake Bay. Her friends include Arthur the Anchovy, Curtis the Crab and Olivia the Osprey and they help protect Jordan and help her find her way home.

The book includes facts about the Chesapeake Bay, the bridge, the watermen, jellyfish, bay anchovies, blue crabs, osprey and more. Also included are tips on what to do if you are stung by a jellyfish and tips for your child if they get lost.

Story inspired by true events and is illustrated by Jon Munson.

With the second in the series about “Curtis the Crab” already written and several others in the planning stages, these books not only are fun to read but also are great educators.

A Book and a Chat with Mike Bond

It is a big welcome bacl to my guest on today's "A Book and a Chat" to best-selling novelist, war and human rights correspondent, environmental activist, award-winning poet and international energy expert, Mike Bond.

Mike has lived globetrotting and often dangerous life , he’s  lived and worked in over thirty countries on six continents. An adviser to the US and foreign governments, human rights and war correspondent, award-winning poet and international energy expert, Mike has used his own experience of many dangerous, remote and war-torn regions of the world to enhance his bestselling novels… he is… as the BBC called him…” The master of the existential thriller" .

Mike’s novels are all based on his experiences in far, dangerous corners of the world:

CROSSFIRE: A British undercover agent fights for his life in Beirut at the height of the Lebanese War -- a deep look into the Middle East's ancient wars and hatreds.

FIRE LIKE THE SUN: An international best-seller about U.S. nuclear warheads lost in the Himalayas, a manhunt through Nepal, Iran, Greece, Algeria, France, Virginia and Colorado.

NIGHT OF THE DEAD: Vietnam vet and weed smuggler Joe Murphy loses his plane in a Guatemalan jungle attack, falls in love with the woman guerrilla who heals him, and fights to protect them both as the death squads hunt them down.

THE LAST SAVANNA: A former British commando battles elephant poachers who then kidnap the woman he loves, in this acclaimed inside story of Africa's disappearing savannas, animals and freedoms.

About "The Last Savana": (taken from Authors Web Page)

With Africa’s last elephants dying under the guns of Somali poachers, ex-SAS officer Ian MacAdam leads a commando squad against them, to hunt what for him is the only decent prey – man. Pursuing the poachers through jungled mountains and searing deserts he battles thirst, solitude, terror and lethal animals, only to find they have kidnapped a young archaeologist, Rebecca Hecht, whom he once loved and bitterly lost. She escapes the kidnappers, is caught and escapes again to risk perishing in the desert. MacAdam embarks on a desperate trek to save not only Rebecca but his own soul in an Africa torn apart by wars, overpopulation and the slaughter of its last wildlife.

Based on the author’s own experiences pursuing elephant poachers in the wilds of East Africa, The Last Savanna is an intense personal memoir of humanity’s ancient heartland, its people and animals, the lonely beauty of its perilous deserts, jungles, and savannas, and the deep, abiding power of love.

As onbe revevuer wrote about the book...

“Mike Bond takes readers into a literary safari of Africa’s elephant poaching war with The Last Savanna, a novel that expertly captures the ravenous, chaotic and frustrating battles raging across the continent . . . and paints a vivid picture of life in the savanna . . . Bond’s knowledge of the Swahili language, local culture and even the wildlife result in what may be one of the most realistic portrayals of Africa yet . . . Bond’s specialty in producing thrillers that editorialize human weakness and bring to light pressing world problems shines in The Last SavannaDynamic, heart-breaking and timely to current events, Bond’s latest book is a must-read.” –

Mike Bond’s critically acclaimed novels depict the innate hunger of the human heart for good, the intense joys of love, the terror and fury of battle, the sinister vagaries of politics and multinational corporations, and the magical beauty of the vanishing natural world in thrill a minute, page turning, must read adventures.

A Book and a Chat with Andre Phillip-Hautecoeur

Andre Phillip-Hautecoeur is not a writer, or that is how he defines himself, he is simply a person who had an urge to share something with an audience and write something about Paris. This he explains during today’s "A Book and a Chat”.

Paris is a city where romance, history, fantasy and enchantment meet, Andre’s novel “One Exquisite Night in Paris” is that and so much more.

Andre came to know and love Paris hanging onto the hem of his wife’s skirt. She’s Parisian, she’s everything French without constraint; she makes understanding all of Parisness a pleasure. An understanding which made him want to write this novel.

About “One Exquisite Night in Paris”: (taken from The Broken Bookshelf blog)

It’s a real story. A boy-meets-girl version of a girl-meets-boy story where she’s from Paris and doesn’t speak any English, while he’s from New York and speaks no French, and they only have one amazing thing in common. It’s a story for all who have yet to experience the most amazing night of their lives; a night impossible to live anywhere else but Paris…purposefully the most wonderfully enchanting city in the entire world. Enchantment, fantasy, luxury and fairytale all converge in only two places; once in our dreams and once when our dreams meet Paris. Everyone should live the perfect fantasy of “One Exquisite Night in Paris.”

It’s hard to give a genre to One Exquisite Night in Paris. The novel is an autobiography, telling the story of how Andre and his wife Eff meet. However, it is also a tour guide to the most amazing places in France and a lesson on France’s history and culture.

The novel alternates between Andre telling the story of him and his wife trying to start a life together, and his attempts to plan their ‘One Exquisite Night in Paris’. There are a few points in time where it may take a moment to realise that the story has switched from one tale to the other but it is generally a smooth read.

An unusual writing style is used in the novel, one which reminds me of something that was written in the late 1800s. Something about the style draws the reader in, especially since the writing matches the magical tone set in the novel when talking about Paris and romance.

"One Exquisite Night in Paris" is a novel is full of enchantment, fantasy, luxury and fairytale that converge in only two places; once in our dreams and once when our dreams meet Paris. The story distills into a perfect night; creating a memory which lasts forever.

A Book and a Chat with Dr Jay Roberts

My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is Dr Jay Roberts, a board-certified physiatrist, specializing in the treatment of physical disabilities with a focus of adding quality to life.

In 1999 Dr. Roberts was in at-home hospice care preparing for his own death from a neurological disease. At the point where he finally gave up, he experienced a spontaneous, overnight healing. It was not the first time he had 'cheated' death. He had survived a fifty-foot fall from a cliff, a plane crash, and attempts on his life by rebel insurgents in remote areas in the Philippines in the 1970s.

Even after his complete recovery from disease, it would take a maximum security prison environment to reveal to him the mysterious power of forgiveness and finally push Dr. Roberts to write his own story a memoir that lead him back to many dark places that not only brought back moments he has tried hard to forget but also issues that caused waves within his own family.

So hard was it for Dr. Roberts to write “Break the Chains” that several times he gave up along the way, but deep inside he knew the words had to be shared, not only for his own healing but to aid others who might be going through some of the same issues.

About “Break the Chains” (Review from Seatlepi.com)

Break the Chains is an inspirational, compelling memoir about forgiveness.
Dr. Jay D Roberts takes the reader on an interesting and enlightening journey, from the time he was a little boy raised by a military father who abused him, to the time he studied medicine in the Philippines in the midst of communist insurrection, to the time he fell victim to a deadly disease and eventually was miraculously healed in Lourdes, France. Above all, the author takes the reader on an internal spiritual journey of the heart and soul, from darkness to light, from slavery to freedom.

This memoir. In a simple, straight-forward manner devoid of superfluous words or descriptions, Dr. Roberts states the facts and allows the reader to make his own conclusions about the meaning of life, faith, persistence, love and, of course, forgiveness, which is the central theme of this book.

The story moves back and forth in time, showing glimpses of the author at different pivotal points of his life. I found the flashes to his childhood quite disturbing, especially the way Dr. Roberts' mother rationalized her husband's abuse of their son. I also found inspirational the way the author persevered to become a doctor and help patients in spite of all the barriers he had to overcome. In addition, the segments about the political upheavals in the Philippines were like a little history lesson.

This book is the poignant story of one man's struggles to break the chains and find peace. Fans of inspirational and Christian memoirs should pick this one up.

A Book and a Chat with Joan Heartwell

Today’s guest on a Book and a Chat is Joan Heartwell who under another name is the award winning author of several novels; she is also a freelance writer and editor.

She has now produced a “Hamster Island” a memoir in which she chronicles, her unremarkable life as a member of a very poor, super-dysfunctional family that includes a mostly absent father, a religious fanatic mother, a kleptomaniac grandmother, and two special needs siblings, all residing more or less in the middle of a parking lot. The story moves from Joan’s lively coming of age in the sixties to her role as caretaker for both siblings after her parents’ deaths, at which time she must resort to extraordinary measures to locate the midpoint between their needs and her own.

Readers will move from laughing to crying as Joan shares with us her life in the pages of “Hamster Island”.

When asked what she hoped people would get from reading this book she replied…

“I hope readers will laugh and cry as they read Hamster Island and find it really entertaining. I hope those who happen to be siblings of persons with special needs will come to feel that their conflicted feelings, especially those they had as children, are totally understandable and acceptable. I hope readers who have never given much thought to individuals with special needs will start thinking about them and feel more compassion for them. I hope I start a conversation. I have so many questions, philosophical questions that arise from the mysteries that I came across in my life; I hope readers will help me to answer them. I hope some high-profile politician—one of those guys/gals who on the one hand preaches that everyone must be pro-life, and on the other would love to see food stamps and Medicaid and other social services drastically cut or eradicated from state and fed budgets—will somehow come across my book and read it and have an epiphany and publicly renounce his/her previous convictions and begin to fight for social justice for one and all. That’s a lot to hope for, but then hope wouldn’t be hope if it wasn’t sweeping.”

The book is one that I believe all will enjoy with dark moments mixed with humor.

A Book and a Chat with Allison M Dickson

My guest today Allison M Dickson is one of those authors who have been creating since they could first hold a crayon. The fact that she was reading Stephen King by the age of 11 might be one of the reasons some of her writing is a little on the dark side.

After early success with short stories including “Dust” and “Under the Scotch Broom” she has now produced her debut book a dark contemporary fiction novel titled “STRINGS” .

About “STRINGS”:

After four years of turning tricks in a mob-run New York brothel to pay off a debt, Nina is ready to go back to a quiet life in Iowa. Just one more client and the whole nightmare will be behind her, but this last trick turns into a battle for her soul. Meanwhile, the brothel’s sadistic Madam has been hiding away money in order to move up in her family’s organization, and she only wants the half million dollars the reclusive millionaire pays for the girls. But her driver Ramón has other ideas, making off with the money left behind when Nina’s last trick goes unexpectedly awry.

The theft comes at a great cost to the Madam, setting off a horrific chain of events that changes them all. The hooker. The driver. The Madam. All of them on a collision course to a place where only madness holds sway.

With Hobbes End releasing Allison’s dystopian science fiction novel, THE LAST SUPPER later this year I am sure we will hear plenty more of Allison M Dickson.

A Book and a Chat with Gabrial Valjan

My guest on today’s “A Book and a ChatGabriel Valjan was short-listed for the 2010 Fish Short Story Prize for his Boston noir, ‘Back in the Day.’ Gabriel’s short stories and some of his poetry continue to appear in literary journals and online magazines. He recently won first prize in ZOUCH Magazine’s inaugural Lit Bit Contest.

Gabriel moved from short stories to a full length novels with “Roma, Undergroun’ the first in his Roma series which has been followed by “Wasp’s Nest” and now his latest the thriller series “Threading the Needle”.

About “Threading the Needle: (taken from Amazon)

Milan. Bianca’s curiosity gets a young university student murdered, but not before he gives her a file that details a secret weapon under development with defense contractor Adastra. Guilt may drive her to find justice for the slain Charlie Brooks, but she is warned by the mysterious Loki to stay away from this case that runs deep with conspiracy. Bianca must find a way to uncover government secrets and corporate alliances without returning Italy to one of its darkest hours, the decades of daily terrorism known as the “Years of Lead.”

With a strong, captivating heroine and an allure of conspiracy and organized crime, “The Roma” series has already gained quite a following, and which with at least two more of the series already in the pipeline, looks to be continue to put the name Gabriel Valjan on the must read for thriller lovers.
