A Book and a Chat with Luke Murphy

My guest today is Luke Murphy one time ice hockey starlet and now lighting the writing world as the author if adventure thriller “Dead Man’s Hand”.

Born in a small rural community in Western Quebec his dream growing up in a location where you learned to skate before you could walk was to become and ice hockey star.

When his mother lost her battle with cancer he decided to out his mind to his dream. The fact he was only 5’9” and weighing 160 pounds in a time when ice hockey was looking for big bodies on the ice did not put him off and he won many awards before using his one ice talent to get a hockey scholarship to Rochester Institute of Technology where he gained Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing with a Minor in Sociology.

He went on to get called upon by the Florida Panthers and though he got to play only four games in the NHL he had a career all be terminated early through injury, he had a carrier in the minors terminated by an serious eye injury.

Knowing that dream had come to the end he returned to his home town and not only started a career as coach but also writing for a local paper, so began his drive to becoming an author.

Several years later and after first learning the craft of a writer he has produced a wonderful murder suspense novel “Dead Man’s Hand”

About “Dead Man’s Hand” (taken from Imajin Books)

From NFL rising-star prospect to wanted fugitive, Calvin Watters is a sadistic African-American Las Vegas debt-collector framed by a murderer who, like the Vegas Police, finds him to be the perfect fall-guy.
…and the cards don't fall your way?

When the brutal slaying of a prominent casino owner is followed by the murder of a well-known bookie, Detective Dale Dayton is thrown into the middle of a highly political case and leads the largest homicide investigation in Vegas in the last twelve years.

The book has received many great reviews, several remarking that the book which is in the style of James Patterson or Rick Mofina, does not have the feel of a debut book.

As one reviewer put it…

I loved how the book kept me in the dark right till the very end! The author made me sympathize with his protaganist Calvin Watters through excellent character building, and I was definitely rooting for him! I believe the author took some serious time doing research for this novel, it was educational AND entertaining for me! A terrific debut! I look forward to more work from Luke Murphy in the future.

Well another book is already underway reviewer, and as we discussed during the show perhaps then a follow up on “duck duck goose”….

A Book and a Chat with Pola Muzyka

My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is another of those multi-talented people who have gone from success in on artistic mode to another. Pola Muzyka was raised on a sheep farm, and her love for the outdoors is still something she holds onto.

Her artistic route however has lead her through modeling, a  career as a dramatic actress, having worked in both starring and feature roles in Hollywood-based motion pictures. She has showcased her visual art in many galleries and currently hosts a television series for baby boomers. Add to that her being accomplished award-winning TV, commercial and corporate writer and now an award winning author and you can see just how talented Pola is.

Pola’s passion lies in her relationship with Jesus Christ, this has lead her not only to her touring  India as a media missionary where she produced documentary films helping pastors in various countries. But also founding her own founder of the internet based, “Christian Media Alliance”.

Her book originally entitled “Escape the Hezbollah” has now been re-edited and released as “Abducted to Kill”.

Part 1 is Terror Regime:

After moving to Iran, a young American named Joseph Rabbani, is brutally abducted and commanded to train in a terrorist camp. As part of his training he is forced to kill people who share his Christian faith in order to survive and warn his fiancée.

Part 2 is Sleeper Cells

Joseph discovers a hidden agenda behind his abduction to kill. The plot to plant sleeper cells in the U.S.and Europe until Islam can take over prompts him to escape at all costs to save his loved ones.

Her book has already won the “Christian Small Publisher Book of the Year” and Pola has a sequel “The Freedom Inside” coming out later this year.

As one reviewer who called it “off the charts powerful!” put it…

Absolutely floored! When you've finished reading this book, you will understand the horrors of an Islamic government and in your mind's eye see some of the most horrific truths about how the Hezbollah treats women, children and men who dare resist. I was particularly stuck by their cold and heartless treatment of orphaned and abandoned children.

Yet in the midst of all that harsh and horrid reality lies a story of courage and love, and faith, brilliantly interwoven between pillars of power, fear and pure evil.

A Book and a Chat with Tony Cane-Honeysett

At the third time of asking I finally was able to have Tony Cane-Honeysett as my guest on “A Book and a Chat”. Last Friday we had issues with the radio broadcast, with echo’s on the line then troublers with the actual program, we were due to re-do the program on Monday but I had to cancel owing to other commitments.

Tony is one of those talented people who no matter what they do they find success, from wanting to be a musician (he did go to Nashville and make an album later in his life), doing ballet to help with his soccer, to being an Emmy Award winning writer and filmmaker, and now author.

His documentary film “The Royal Academy” which started out as an exercise so he could learn how to use his new camera ended up winning two Emmy awards. This success was followed up by a bondage film “Mondo Bondo”.

During his investigation for “Mondo Bono” he chatted to several Dominatrix’s and was amazed at the number of high ranking judges and directors that used that service.

Tony has now taken this knowledge and produced a wonderful novel “Fem Dom” which is the shortened term used for 'Female Domination'. Originally Tony was planning to make this into another screenplay but instead went the direction of it being a novel. Not that the original idea has been forgotten, indeed you can see a short film snippet on the web site link.

When I asked Tony how he was promoting the book, his wonderful reverse psychology was…
“I tell people it's a disgusting book and strongly advise them against buying it. This always piques their interest and they always want to know more!”

About “Fem Dom”:

When faithful wife Tara Drew suspects her advertising executive husband is seeing a Dominatrix, she sets out to trap him in the act. She pays the Dominatrix to teach her how to please men by dominating them and inflicting pain. But her plan to snare her husband has very bizarre consequences. Way out of her comfort zone as an undercover Fem Dom, Tara discovers a kinky world that both intrigues and disgusts her. But now she is the one with a secret life that she doesn't want her husband to find out about.

He has already received some great reviews and I am including on from one of the top reviewers on Amazon Grady Harp who gave the book 5 starts.

A Movie Waiting to be Optioned!, October 8, 2012
Tony Cane-Honeysett has the gift! Though the title of this book may throw a few prospective buyers off, FEM DOM is not a travelogue into the bowels of degenerate sexual behavior, but instead it is a at once a study of how control dominates the minds of those climbing the steep ladder of corporate success, leaving in its path the bruised family and friends and how in turn women can respond to the need for domination - either actively or through persistent investigation of the male control process and needs. Cane-Honeysett has created a credible story about some incredible situations and he relates it with the force of a both a dramatist and comic master. He comes to this first novel with a depth of experience as a filmmaker of documentaries (which happens to include a film that studies B&D `Mondo Bondo') and as an Emmy award-winning writer.

Clem Drew is in the advertising field, completely immersed in his job and his struggle to become the next CEO of his huge company when the current CEO retires: his creative juices are responsible for landing some mega accounts for he company while at the same time attempting to avoid the too evident struggle with his in house competitor Kurt Fitzgerald. Tension and long hours keep Clem fatigued, and the person who suffers is his wife Tara who spends her boring housewife hours ending to Clem and volunteering as a baker for a church charity. Tara longs for the missing passion and physical aspects of her marriage to the handsome Clem, and when she sees whelps and bruises on Clem's back she grows suspicious of extramarital affairs. Follow-up on hints of indiscretions of a name at the office prove false but the last straw is the discovery of a card in Clem's suit - Mistress Krystal - Professional Services - 952-941-5051 and on the back is the appointment Tuesday, 5 PM. Tara shares this with her best friend Lorraine, a self-assured black gal who advises Tara to explore this thoroughly.

The story flies from this point: Tara makes an appointment with Mistress Krystal, a Dominatrix, who gradually introduces Tara into the world of Bondage and Discipline and Tara buys her needed outfits and watches the humiliation Mistress Krystal inflicts on wealthy men, ultimately being giving the chance to humiliate one customer called `Sissy Boy' - all in preparation to give Clem what he desires at home while catching the bug for the role as a Dominatrix. How this all plays out to the benefit of all persons introduced in this story (with one MAJOR exception) is the hilarious manner in which the author closes all doors and windows he has opened. Nothing is as it appears and the surprises leave the reader completely satisfied.

It is rare when an author can use a dark subject as the basis for a story, but in using the B&D idea he serves up a psychosocial sexual brew from which we all learn about a subject few know. He makes it work - beautifully!

Like Grady I can see this becoming the film that the book set out to be.

A Book and a Chat with Melinda Marchiano

Melinda Marchiano is an award winning author, but more than that in my eyes she is an award winning person.

She has appeared previously on “A Book and a Chat” sharing with us about her book “Grace: A Child’s Intimate Journey Through Cancer and Recovery” which has now won several well deserved awards including Benjamin Franklin Award Best First Book Nonfiction, Silver Medal Ippy Award and ForeWord Reviews Book of The Year Finalist.

About “Grace: A Child’s Intimate Journey Through Cancer and Recovery”

The book is an uplifting story of thirteen-year-old Melinda Marchiano’s battle with cancer—told in her own unflinchingly honest words. Melinda Marchiano first felt an eerie weakness on a family trip to Yosemite National Park. After doctors found a rock-hard lump in her chest, she received the devastating diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma. With eloquence, humor, and wisdom beyond her years, Melinda shares the ensuing battle of her young life. As she struggles through treatment and fights to continue her study of ballet—her greatest passion—Melinda recounts the trials and triumphs of her illness: the elaborate pill schedules, the wretched nausea of chemotherapy, the never-ending support of her family, and the smiles and determination of the doctors and nurses who put her on the road to recovery. Whether cancer has touched your life or not, Melinda’s tenacity, faith in God, and complete abandonment of self-pity make this survivor’s tale a truly unforgettable experience.

Since the last time Melinda was on the show she has continued to help thousands of “young warriors” being part of the “Make A Wish Foundation” “Hope” tour in which she traveled over 7000 miles visited 25 states and 15 hospitals, sharing with others her own experiences.

Now at Pepperdine where she is studying to become a doctor while still keeping her love of dance active she is working on a major documentary titled “The Truth 365”. (Check "thetruth365.org)

She has been busy narrating and doing voice over this is a ground-breaking, grass-roots documentary film and social media campaign that gives a voice to children fighting cancer.

The film features compelling and inspiring stories of children and their families fighting cancer as well as interviews with political leaders and several of the country’s most respected pediatric oncologists. With the help of thousands of volunteers and a very focused social media campaign, the film will inspire millions of people to show their support for children with cancer.

A Book and a Chat with Karen Mueller Bryson and Cindy McCoy

Today’s “A Book and a Chat” was lucky to have not one guest in the form of Karen Mueller Bryson who is an award-winning/optioned screenwriter, produced playwright and published novelist. She is also the founder of “Short on Time Books”, fast-paced and fun novels for readers on the go. Ideal reads for those on the go who want to read but can’t find the time to get into that long novel. “Short Time Books” are fund fast paced books a reader can finish in one sitting.

One such book which brings in my second guest is a biography that Karen has written “Hell on Wheels - The Incredible Story of Rookie Roller Derby Queen Cindy McCoy”. And during the show I was lucky enough to have none other than Cindy McCoy as my other guest.

In the early sixties while most other teenagers what to wear and whom they would they might go to the prom with, Cindy McCoy, then only fifteen was skating roller derby in Australia.

Coming from a far from happy childhood, Cindy found her escape at the age of fourteen with the LA T-Birds roller team. A year later she pleaded with her mother to be allowed to quit school and join the ranks of the Roller Game as a rookie in Australia.

The whole country seemed to take to this small yet tough young lady and she was in her rookie year not only voted “Roller Game Rookie of the Year” but also “Roller Game Queen of the Year”.

Her story which Karen pens brilliantly in “Hell on Wheels”, reveals the details of sports legend, “Cindy McCoy's” inspirational life story. How Cindy escaped a difficult youth, in which she faced abuse and abandonment, by becoming a professional skater as a teen and traveling on an international roller derby team. Fans in Australia became like a surrogate family to young Cindy and she was soon voted Roller Game Rookie of the Year and Roller Game Queen of the Year, an honor that was never repeated. This moving narrative, about a young woman, who gave everything she had to the sport she loved, will appeal to fans of roller derby as well as readers of all ages just learning about this fascinating sport.

As one reviewer wrote…

“I love biographies and this book was very enjoyable. I started reading the book on a Friday night and couldn't put it down. I enjoy quick-read type books like the ones Karen writes, as I don't have much spare time to read long novel type books. The Roller Derby Queen gives inspiration to achieve your life goals no matter what type of hardships you are raised with. More women should have her guts.”

They end their review “buy it today”, I would not only endorse that but also mention, watch out for a possible film as I think this great biography would make a wonderful movie.
