Today’s “A Book and a Chat” was lucky to have not one guest
in the form of Karen Mueller Bryson who is an award-winning/optioned
screenwriter, produced playwright and published novelist. She is also the
founder of “Short on Time Books”, fast-paced and fun novels for readers on the
go. Ideal reads for those on the go who want to read but can’t find the time to
get into that long novel. “Short Time Books” are fund fast paced books a reader
can finish in one sitting.
One such book which brings in my second guest is a biography
that Karen has written “Hell on Wheels - The Incredible Story of Rookie Roller
Derby Queen Cindy McCoy”. And during the show I was lucky enough to have none
other than Cindy McCoy as my other guest.
In the early sixties while most other teenagers what to wear
and whom they would they might go to the prom with, Cindy McCoy, then only
fifteen was skating roller derby in Australia.
Coming from a far from happy childhood, Cindy found her escape
at the age of fourteen with the LA T-Birds roller team. A year later she
pleaded with her mother to be allowed to quit school and join the ranks of the
Roller Game as a rookie in Australia.
The whole country seemed to take to this small yet tough
young lady and she was in her rookie year not only voted “Roller Game Rookie of
the Year” but also “Roller Game Queen of the Year”.
Her story which Karen pens brilliantly in “Hell on Wheels”,
reveals the details of sports legend, “Cindy McCoy's” inspirational life story.
How Cindy escaped a difficult youth, in which she faced abuse and abandonment,
by becoming a professional skater as a teen and traveling on an international
roller derby team. Fans in Australia became like a surrogate family to young
Cindy and she was soon voted Roller Game Rookie of the Year and Roller Game
Queen of the Year, an honor that was never repeated. This moving narrative,
about a young woman, who gave everything she had to the sport she loved, will
appeal to fans of roller derby as well as readers of all ages just learning
about this fascinating sport.
As one reviewer wrote…
“I love biographies and this book was very
enjoyable. I started reading the book on a Friday night and couldn't put it
down. I enjoy quick-read type books like the ones Karen writes, as I don't have
much spare time to read long novel type books. The Roller Derby Queen gives
inspiration to achieve your life goals no matter what type of hardships you are
raised with. More women should have her guts.”
They end their review “buy it today”, I
would not only endorse that but also mention, watch out for a possible film as
I think this great biography would make a wonderful movie.
So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining show as I chat with my special guest today on A Book and a Chat with Karen Mueller Bryson and Cindy McCoy
