A Book and a Chat with Angela Breidenbach

My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is Angela Breidenbach, multi award winning inspirational speaker and the author of the "Gems of Wisdom: For a Treasure-filled Life" (amongst other books) and Mrs. Montana International 2009 (You’ll have to listen to the show to find out about that one).

Angela shared that when we realize that all our experiences are a training ground for growth, we can begin to accept even our own mistakes. We tend to bury or be ashamed of what we’ve done wrong. But the most wonderful gift is ours if we accept we’ve learned amazing lessons in wisdom from those errors.

She does that in so many ways not the least in her new book the Gems of Wisdom: For a Treasure-filled Life.

In Gems of Wisdom: For A Treasure-Filled Life you'll embark on a treasure hunt for God's unique gems of wisdom. Be empowered, learn to influence through your own life lessons, and preserve important relationships. Gems of Wisdom invites the reader on a treasure hunt to find important life concepts represented by the beautiful stones God created. Excellent for Bible study and book clubs as well as individual study.

The gems also play another important part in her sharing, as you can find on her web page. The gems are a tangible memory anchors for the concepts in the book, Gems of Wisdom: For A Treasure-filled Life, as we battle our internal pirates of negative attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors.

At the end of each chapter, we’ll claim each gem as the pirate is defeated. The final chapter is the overflowing treasure chest (and why every necklace has the treasure chest charm) of all our gems of wisdom.

As well as her latest book this fascinating lady has written two books (so far) in her Creative Cooking series. “Creative Cooking for Simple Elegance” and “Creative Cooking for Colitis” both of which being interting and educational would make a great gift.

With further books on the way including an historical novel (or two) I’m sure this fascinating and sharing lady will continue to use her amazing passion and mission to continue helping others achieve their goals and live healthy, fulfilled lives. She is an unending source of inspiration, energy and empowerment for others.

A Book and a Chat with Kathi Macias

Always welcome Kathi Macias makes a return visit on today’s “A Book and a Chat”, to share with us about the success of her last book “Red Ink”, her great new novel “People of the Book” her new “Freedom” series and her first Christmas book.

Along with all that we also heard how “Easy Writer” as she is known and her husband have replaced their Harley’s with a sunburst orange Corvette… talk about a packed program!

Kathi is a multi-award winning writer who has authored more than 30 books and ghostwritten several others.

A former newspaper columnist and string reporter, she has taught creative and business writing in various venues and has been a guest on many radio and television programs. Kathi is a popular speaker at churches, women’s clubs and retreats, and writers’ conferences, and was named 2008 Member of the Year by AWSA (Advanced Writers and Speakers Association).

Her “Devotion” series previously consisting of “No Greater Love” set in South Africa, “More Than Conquerors” set in Mexico, the recently nominated for the Golden Scroll Award “Red Ink” set in China, has now been joined by “People of the Book” which is set in Saudi Arabia.

With all the current upheaval in Saudi, regarding woman driving and having their own voice the book as we discussed during a really interesting and entertaining show, with this prolific writer.

About “People of the Book”:

In a nutshell, it deals with the very real issue of honor killings. Here is a brief synopsis:

Eighteen-year-old Farah, who lives inRiyadh,Saudi Arabia, with her family, wants nothing more than to develop a deeper, more meaningful devotion to her Muslim faith. She sees the month of Ramadan as her chance to draw nearer to Allah, and she pursues that goal throughout the holiday. All goes well until the prophet Isa—Jesus—appears to her in a dream and calls her to Himself. At the same time, her only brother, Kareem, who has never liked Farah, actively seeks an opportunity to expose her for the sham he believes she is.

Meanwhile, Farah’s seventeen-year-old cousin, Nura, has begun to frequent an online chat room where former Muslims gather to discuss their new faith, based on their belief that Isa is much more than a Muslim prophet—He is actually the Son of God. While there, Nura becomes acquainted with an American girl of Muslim ancestry—now a devout Christian named Sara—and a friendship quickly develops. However, Sara has problems of her own due to her fifteen-year-old brother Emir’s involvement with a gang.
The lives of Farah, Nura, and Sara ultimately dovetail until each finds herself at a place where her faith is put to the test. Will they remain faithful to the end? Will God protect and keep them safe in the midst of persecution and treachery? Or will they be required to pay the ultimate price for their faith?

The book has already received rave reviews and I’m sure it will reap even more rewards for Kathi.

As well as the news of her new book, Kathi also shared with us details of her new “Freedom” series which is due out later this year with the first book being “Deliver Me from Evil”. Also the fact that she is bringing out her first ever Christmas book “A Christmas Journey Home” which will also be out later this year.

A Book and a Chat with Leah Cypess

Former Class of 2K10 debut author Leah Cypess makes a welcome return to A Book and a Chat tonight, not only is it great to catch up with what has been happening to Leah since we spoke about a year ago, but also to chat about her new book "Nightspell" which comes out on May 31st.

Last year we learned that like many other authors she’d started writing items at a young age, but in the case of Leah this was in first grade where she wrote a story narrator by an ice-cream cone in the process of being eaten. Then in fourth grade with the influence of Black beauty and Lassie Leah wrote a story about a girl who is shipwrecked on a desert island where she and her faithful dog have numerous adventures.

This was the starting point for Leah’s travel through the world of writing, which has led to her debut novel “Mistwood”. “A desperate prince… a castle full of lies… and an ancient shape shifter trapped in the form of a human girl.”

This book proved one of the YA success of 2010 chocked full of diverse and interesting characters. From Isabel, the unique Shifter with staunch loyalties to many people’s personal favorite Clarisse, Rokan’s conniving and resourceful sister.
Clarisse is actually the one character that spans that links to Leah’s new book "Nightspell" a stand-alone companion novel to the much-acclaimed Mistwood.

About Nightspell: (Thanks to Goodreads)

When Darri rides into Ghostland, a country where the living walk with the dead, she has only one goal: to rescue her younger sister Callie, who was sent to Ghostland as a hostage four years ago.

Callie however has changed in those four years, and now has secrets of her own. In her quest to save her sister from herself, Darri will be forced to outmaneuver a handsome ghost prince, an ancient sorcerer, and a manipulative tribal warrior (who happens to be her brother). When Darri discovers the source of the spell that has kept the dead in Ghostland chained to this earth, she faces a decision that will force her to reexamine beliefs she has never before questioned - and lead her into the heart of a conspiracy that threatens the very balance of power between the living and the dead.

With a new book and fresh plot already underway, I’m sure Leah success of 2010 will not only continue with “Nightspell” but go on through 2012 as well.

A Book and a Chat with Alexandrea Weis

Like it seems a lot of the writers I have on “A Book and a Chat” my guest today started getting into writing when she was eight, with a book of poems, which by the way she still has. Since then she has gone from nursing people to nursing animals, and writing poems to creating a terrific debut and second novel.

Alexandrea Weis was born and raised New Orleans, growing up in the French Quarter, an area full of life which definitely influenced her writing. Her debut novel “To My Senses” introduced us to Nicci Beauvoir, a disillusioned New Orleans debutante, whose life is full of planning and practicalities until she meets and is seduced by a secretive artist named David Alexander.

The book received many rave reviews, and the following were soon crying out for more of Nicci Beauvoir. This clamming for a follow up has now been answered in the form of Alexandrea’s second book “Recovery”.

Recovery” takes place two years after the main character, Nicci, has suffered the loss of her love, David Alexander. The she learns David was killed because of her. Someone from her past in New Orleans murdered David out of jealousy over Nicci. She teams up with a corporate spy, and former friend of David’s, to hunt down the killer in ravages of post-Katrina New Orleans.

The book has already been optioned for a possible movie, which will follow her already sold screen plays “White River” and “Blood Will Tell”. Blood Will Tell in fact is currently in pre-production with Buyer Group International.

If you go to the link for Alexandrea’s web page you will also learn of the other loves in her life. As well as being a registered nurse she is a permitted wildlife rehabber with the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries. Her nursing experience helps her to care for orphaned and injured wildlife. Some of which as we learned during the show were themselves trying to join the radio program.

Critically acclaimed and is continually growing in popularity, and with a third book already on the way and a fourth not far behind, Nicci Beauvoir and her creator Alexandrea Weis I’m sure are two names we’ll hear a lot more about.

A Book and a Chat with Steve Berry

(There is a slight gap at the begining of the show when I lost all my connections, but the show is one not to miss.)

New York Times best selling author Steve Berry is a person I use as a example to other authors, and it was interesting upon having him back as my guest on tonight’s show, that he uses the same example of what happened to him when talking to other users.

Steve has been writing since 1990, and it took him 12 years and 85 rejections (over five different editions) to finally sell a manuscript. Now nine years later his books are printed in 40 languages, and he has kept 12 million readers in 51 countries on the edge of their seats with the exploits of his hero “Cotton Malone”.

Cotton has been having adventures all over the world to all parts of Europe (The Templar Legacy, The Paris Vendetta), Asia (The Venetian Betrayal), Antarctica (The Charlemagne Pursuit), the Middle East (The Alexandria Link) and China (The Emperors Tomb). It’s no wonder that he told Steve that he wanted some time off so will not be back in a fresh story until 2013. That is however not before one last adventure before his break this time through Steve’s latest smash hit of an adventure; “The Jefferson Key” takes our hero to America.

Steve Berry
is such a great guest always sharing with us his latest news as well as a few hints along the way about what we might be reading from him next. Now this can also be shared in two ebooks which will introduce to you or perhaps follow up on other characters that appear in both this new book and the "Emperors Tomb" in the form of “The Balkan Escape” and “The Devils Gold”.

We also learned in this show about Steve’s trip to the Middle East along with other “Thriller/Mystery" writers to visit the troops and the great reception they received there.

So what about The Jefferson Key, which is officially launched tomorrow (May 17th)?

Four United States presidents have been assassinated—in 1865, 1881, 1901, and 1963—each murder seemingly unrelated and separated by time.

But what if those presidents were all killed for the same reason: a clause in the United States Constitution—contained within Article 1, Section 8—that would shock Americans?

This question is what faces former Justice Department operative Cotton Malone in his latest adventure. When a bold assassination attempt is made against President Danny Daniels in the heart of Manhattan, Malone risks his life to foil the killing—only to find himself at dangerous odds with the Commonwealth, a secret society of pirates first assembled during the American Revolution.

In their most perilous exploit yet, Malone and Cassiopeia Vitt race across the nation and take to the high seas. Along the way they break a secret cipher originally possessed by Thomas Jefferson, unravel a mystery concocted by Andrew Jackson, and unearth a centuries-old document forged by the Founding Fathers themselves, one powerful enough—thanks to that clause in the Constitution—to make the Commonwealth unstoppable.

The response the author has received from the book is amazing, as he stated normally there are a few who do not like the book for one reason or another yet so far he has received nothing but praise, and I can tell you that I for one also think this is his best book so far!

When you get reviews like…

“One of the most spellbinding and ingenious openings in all of thrillerdom. The cast of characters is huge but every one of them is memorable. The action is intense and masterfully choreographed. As always with Steve Berry, you’re educated about significant things while your knuckles are turning white and the pages are flying. Easily Cotton Malone’s most epic, swashbuckling adventure.” —David Baldacci

"The Constitution. . . secret codes . . . loads of history. . . AND pirates! What else does anyone need? The Jefferson Key won't just haunt your nights--it'll haunt your life. Cotton Malone is coming back to the scariest place of all: Home." —Brad Meltzer

"THE JEFFERSON KEY starts with a bang and holds the reader in its grip until the last page. Fascinating American history, up-to-the-minute politics, pulse-pounding action. This is a story Mitch Rapp would love." —Vince Flynn

You know it’s a sure hit that will soon have the name of Steve Berry and Cotton Malone back on the New York Times Best Sellers list.

A Book and a Chat with Philip L Davidson

Sometimes I have guests on the show whose real life adventures and tales are better than any book that could be written. My guest today Philip L Davidson is one such person.

A Vietnam Vet, he found himself in Berlin, one of the very few people tasked with guarding the Nazi war criminal Rudolf Hess. Hess was the last remaining prisoner in Spandau, the entire prison complex was maintained for this one inmate. After leaving the Armed Services he moved on to an even more exciting career, a law enforcement officer, a teacher, a coach, and now a Civil Rights Lawyer.

Not that his book “DREAMER” is his first dip into literature. Back in 1979 he wrote a text book, I think the title might give the subject matter away, ‘SWAT’. This was the text adopted across the countries police forces to develop SWAT teams, much of what he wrote still be the bases for teaching today.

In his debut novel “Dreamer” the major theme is the internal squabbles and conflict that went on within Argentina following the demise of the Peron’s. When the military ruled with an iron fist and tens of thousands of people went missing, tortured and then killed by the military Junta. Being around the time of the Falkland invasion, of course as an Englishman it brings back to me much of what went on at that time.

Another theme that runs throughout Dreamer is good versus evil, God versus Satan. In the interview we explored this at some length. Phil himself, I think, has been a little surprised by what some reviewers and readers have said about this aspect.

Somehow, someway, Dreamer has been labeled as Christian Literature.
It is a book that will appeal to many from the religious to the readers of a good action/thriller and is one the books of the summer.

We also heard about Philip’s next book “The Purple Panther” which hopefully he’ll be back to chat about when the book is launched.

A Book and a Chat with Douglas W. Jacobson

Historical fiction writer Douglas W. Jacobson drops by to chat about himself and his latest book The Katyn Order.

Engineer and WWII buff, Douglas shared with us much about his writing and his historical interest that has led him first to produce the thrilling “Night of Flames”, now being followed by as Library Journal put it…

“Compelling authenticity and evocatively rendered detail will captivate history buffs and thriller fans alike.”

Night of Flames was the winner of 2007 ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’ by the Wisconsin Library Association.

In 1939 the Germans invade Poland, setting off a rising storm of violence and destruction. For Anna and Jan Kopernik the loss is unimaginable. She is an assistant professor at a university in Krakow; he, an officer in the Polish cavalry. Separated by war, they must find their own way in a world where everything they ever knew is gone. Through the long night of Nazi occupation, Anna, Jan, and ordinary people across Europe fight a covert war of sabotage and resistance against the overwhelming might of the German war machine. The struggle seems hopeless, but they are determined to take back what is theirs

His success will surely be followed up by another block buster hit with The Katyn Order.

The German War Machine is in retreat as the Russians advance. In Warsaw, Resistance fighters rise up against their Nazi occupiers, but the Germans retaliate, ruthlessly leveling the city. American Adam Nowak has been dropped into Poland by British intelligence as an assassin and Resistance fighter. During the Warsaw Rising he meets Natalia, a covert operative who has lost everything—just as he has. Amid the Allied power struggle left by Germany’s defeat, Adam and Natalia join in a desperate hunt for the 1940 Soviet order authorizing the murders of 20,000 Polish army officers and civilians. If they can find the Katyn Order before the Russians do, they just might change the fate of Poland.

Compelling authenticity and evocatively rendered detail will captivate history buffs and thriller fans alike, and I for one am already looking forward to reading Douglas’s next book perhaps about the Belgium resistance underground the “Comet Line”?

B.A. or rather Barbara Chepaitis has been writing since she could first hold a crayon, though it was not until later on in life she got the series writing bug, which has since produced eight published novels covering many different areas of the writing world, or as Barbara out it... she's "Bitextual"

These books include the futuristic “Fear Series” set of books featuring Jaguar Addams who with Alex Dzarny make the wort criminals on Prison Planetoid 3 face their deepest fears.

The Fear Principle

The Fear of God

Learning Fear

Jaguar is sent to a home-planet university where she runs into a telekine whose talents might just be more than she can handle.

A Lunatic Fear

There's always been something about the moon, and Jaguar and Alex find out what that something is.

As well as this series my guest has also written this series Barbara is also the creator of the critically acclaimed Feeding Christine and These Dreams.
Her first nonfiction book, Feathers of Hope, is about Berkshire Bird Paradise and the human connection with birds.

You can find out more about Berkshire Paradise at "BIRDPARADISE.ORG".

A Book and a Chat with Fay Lindo Taylor

My guest on today’s show is fellow Connecticut author Fay Lindo Taylor.
Born in Kingston, the capital city of the idyllic island paradise of Jamaica, West Indies, Fay migrated to the USA in 1970 eventually settling down meeting her now husband and raising three children in Harford Connecticut

In 1989 a long overdue weekend in the Poconos turns tragic for young Fay Taylor and her husband Charley when she is thrown from a horse, a fall that results in a broken back and severe spinal cord injuries.

Thus begin a series of tragedies for Fay and her family, and it takes everything they have to combat each new challenge being thrown at them. From the depths of despair to triumphant heights and back again, first time writer Fay Taylor takes you on a rollercoaster ride through life, choices and experiences.

Fay wanted to share her experiences thus started her biographical novel “STEEL

This memoir tells the story of a woman whose faith and courage help her remain steadfast like steel. Fay Taylor’s story of triumph over adversity is an inspiration to all who have to live with or care for someone with severe spinal cord injuries, and is a testament to the power of family and unconditional love.

As we learned during the program, “Steel” not just the metal that was inserted into Fay’s spine to help her walk again, but also describes the strength and conviction of this lady who has proved the doctor who told her family she would “never walk again” so wrong.

Her book I am sure will continue to be an inspiration to many.

A Book and a Chat with Estevan Vega

After a slight delay owing to lost phones and flat batteries my guest finally was able to join me on tonight’s “A Book and a Chat”.

Estevan Vega has been on the show several times before including sharing the guest seat during the popular Male YA Author month set of shows.
He was author of The Servant of the Realm and The Sacred Sin, both fantasy/thriller novels published by the time he was eighteen.

These were followed by his hugely successful and popular book “Arson”. This will soon be followed by the now completed “Arson Two” though of course as Estevan shared with us will not be the final name of the book.

Many of the questions left unanswered from book one will be explained with many a new question being posed for a book three. With the popularity of Arson, I’m sure the second book, no matter what the title is being eagerly anticipated by many readers.
To keep his fans happy Estevan has also produced an E-book of three short stories called “When Colors Bleed

WHEN COLORS BLEED is a short story collection that features three unique colors: love, loss, and regret. Both palpable and haunting, each story is a glimpse into human frailty and desperation.

BABY BLUE:
Casey never had any luck with men, even though she was employed by one of the finest clothing stores in New England and saw attractive, “sure kinds” strolling through her section every day like clockwork. At twenty-three years old, she has given up on her dreams of the spotlight, of finding love, and of ever getting out of the small town she reluctantly calls home. But one rainy afternoon, Thomas Rayford, a very unusual and kind stranger, stumbles into her life looking for an odd, baby blue suit. One thing is certain: Casey, the twenty-three-year-old dreamer stuck in a line, will never be the same.

VANILLA RED:
From his cold hell in Block C, a nameless man unfolds this twisted tale. This is the story of a man who becomes something else. A man who had a father once. A man who loved once. “They want to know why. They want a reason,” he confesses. “But nobody likes the reasons. They’re like unwanted children or cancers with no cure. A reason is a justification, an excuse so we can’t be blamed. But I know what it is I’ve done, and there is no reason that can take it back.” So begins Vanilla Red, a confession, a story, a prayer, or perhaps a drip of dark truth in the batter of humanity. Take a look inside and tell me what color you see.

THE MAN IN THE COLORED ROOM:
Colin awakens in a room, jittery, afraid, and confused. He knows not how he got here, who brought him, or why. And the only thing waiting for him is a hot cup of coffee and a seemingly flawless room that bleeds colors. As an architect, he understands that no room is perfect, but somehow this anomaly has crawled through the cracks and pushed the limits of perfection. No seams. No lines. No windows. Enter a bald man in a suit. Once he steps through the door, he makes the colors disappear with the push of button. His name is Jack, and he claims to be a friend. Still unsure of anything, Colin wages war with his mind, with a dark truth he isn’t ready to accept, and with Jack. In the moments that follow, Jack asks Colin a series of questions, questions that will reveal the where, the how, and the why of his arrival.
