A Book and a Chat with Anthony D Collins

My guest today is Anthony D. Collins, who is the definition of positivity and the embodiment of kinetic energy.

That is, his thoughts set in motion truly have the power to bring forth change within. His defining moment came in 2009 at the age of 34, when he realized he was unhappy and sought out to gain his happiness. His testimony touches others and is proof of how someone who once led a dark life can light a spark in others that illuminates lives. His happiness is proof of what a life with energy, selflessness and a spiritual journey can do. Anthony helps people understand life isn’t about rushing to the finish line, but transitioning from one moment to the next with success. “The number one goal in our lives should be obtaining happiness within first. We are no good to anyone or anything if we are not happy,” Anthony says. “Once we are happy there is nothing that we cannot achieve for ourselves or our loved ones.”

Anthony has spread his inspiration to positively impact others firstly across the airwaves co-hosting the Blog Talk Radio show “Laugh & Tears” which he was nominated for Best Male Host in 2011 and also nominated for Best Show of the Year in 2011. Anthony currently hosts “The Anthony & B.Fly Radio Show” on Blog Talk Radio which provides informative and thought provoking topics that motivate their listeners to make a positive change in their lives.  Anthony has also participated in relationship panels.  As a man he is open freely to sharing his life experience.

Now Anthony has shared this powerful insight in his book “Life is Outstanding”.

In “Life is Outstanding”, Anthony D. Collins allows readers to not only read about his life, but also learn from his challenges. He also provides the steps that he needed to take when at the lowest point, as well as how he continues to achieve greatness in his life.

About “Life is Outstanding”:

Anthony has always had a purpose that he tried to deny over and over again. But without any more delays he finally took all the confirmations from friends and associates that his positive words should be shared with the world. His life testimonies have helped people all over the world. Anthony decided that he could do more and that is exactly what he is doing with this book. He always says just sit back and allow him to do all the positive work and fill your lives with inspiration.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining show as I chat with my special guest today on A Book and a Chat with Anthony D Collins

A Book and a Chat with Karen Klassen

My guest Karen Klassen once lived a life that many can relate to trapped in a world where every day was the same, a life that consisted of a steady downward spiral. Suppressing her true feelings and living a toxic lifestyle her physical body suffered and I manifested chronic back pain, IBS, addictions, TMJ, allergies, anorexia, depression, and scoliosis. Looking for a way out she married a man she thought was her knight in shining army only to find he was emotionally abusive leaving Karen to cry herself to sleep every wondering if there was another better life.

Then all that changed, she managed to find enough courage to get a divorce before in her late twenties she experienced a profound spiritual awakening which changed the course of her life forever. Karen embarked on a journey beyond the familiar as she delved into a spiritual practice of meditation, self reflection and a divine love she’d never known before. Instead of seeking love outside of herself she began to explore and transform her inner worlds and it was here she discovered her brilliance, a brilliance that lies within every woman.

In 2010 Karen launched Women Embracing Brilliance which brought brilliant women together to celebrate themselves, each other and their incredible journey.

Now Karen shares the experience in her book “The Freedom Frequency” which has been described as “one of the best-written self-help books” by a reviewer who has read many such books over the years.

About “The Freedom Frequency”: (taken from Amazon)

Did you know that your personal and spiritual growth contributes to the evolution of humanity? Do you feel you are being called to be more and live more purposefully? You have two choices in how you live your life. You can live below the line in the realm of fear where worry, stress, doubt, and the many negative states of mind can sabotage your relationships and dreams. Or you can live your life above the line in the vibrations of joy, fulfillment, love, and soul-inspired purpose. The choice is yours.

This book shows you a powerful and evolutionary way to view your mind, emotions, relationships and your life. I will show you how to release your fear-based mind and transform those inner voices that tell you, you’re not good enough, smart enough or unworthy of love and abundance. By embracing your Divine Mind, the Universal Intelligence inside of you, you raise your vibration and reclaim your power as a Divine Human Being. If you are ready to live a heart-centered life free of drama and stress, then The Freedom Frequency is a book you will want to read.

A Book and a Chat with Charmaine Hammond

How does a playground peace maker, who went on to become a Correctional Officer use her communication, and conflict resolution experience to help children?

Charmaine Hammond's first career was as a Correctional Officer, after which she pursued her passion for conflict management, specializing as a dispute resolution expert

Now as the President of Hammond International Inc., Charmaine helps individuals, teams, businesses, government departments, and corporations improve resilience, and inspired performance.

When she and her husband adopted Toby, a five-year-old Chesapeake Bay retriever who proved to be a holy terror, little did she know what Toby would also bring and how he would take Charmaine almost full circle and lead her down a literary path that would become almost a cult following.

About “On Toby’s Terms: (Taken from Amazon)

When Charmaine and her husband adopted Toby, a five-year-old Chesapeake Bay retriever, they figured he might need some adjusting time, but they certainly didn't count on what he'd do in the meantime. Soon after he entered their lives and home, Toby proved to be a holy terror who routinely opened and emptied the hall closet, turned on water taps, pulled and ate things from the bookshelves, sat for hours on end in the sink, and spent his days rampaging through the house.

Oddest of all was his penchant for locking himself in the bathroom, and then pushing the lid of the toilet off the tank, smashing it to pieces. After a particularly disastrous encounter with the knife- block in the kitchen-and when the couple discovered Toby's bloody paw prints on the phone-they decided Toby needed professional help. Little did they know what they would discover about this dog.
On Toby's Terms is an endearing story of a beguiling creature who teaches his owners that, despite their trying to teach him how to be the dog they want, he is the one to lay out the terms of being the dog he needs to be. This insight would change their lives forever.

This book became an Amazon number one best seller and will soon be made into a major motion picture. It also enable Charmaine to raise a large amount for charity.

As ‘Jen Panteluk Director of Development Ronald McDonald House® Northern Alberta wrote…

On Toby’s Terms is a wonderful book and Charmaine Hammond has done an amazing job sharing their story of Toby. I completely admire what they have done with Toby – you’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you’ll walk away with some great life lessons. I highly recommend this read!’

Charmaine did not stop writing for her other job and has produced several help books as well as a follow up to “On Toby’s Terms”. “Toby, the Pet Therapy Dog, and His Hospital Friends”. This second Toby book beautifully illustrated by a lifelong friend of Charmaine’s, follows Toby the service dog for a day, and see how he makes friends with the children, helps make them happy and forget that they are sick and away from home.

With a new Toby book about bullying on the way and further TV and radio follow up the name of Charmaine Hammond will continue to be to follow, showing how lessons learned in the business world can also relate to the lives of children.

A Book and a Chat with Dee A Levy and Brian Sheffield Hunt

Imagine that in the middle of celebrating the New year over a romantic dinner, your husband suddenly says he has something to” tell you”, no not tell, “show you”. Only to appear ten minutes later dressed in your dress and lingerie. What would you think, what would you do, to suddenly after how many year of marriage to find that your husband and father of your children was a “cross dresser”?

This happened to Dee A Levy, one of my guests on today’s today who is the founder of the nonprofit organization Cross Dressers Wives, whose mission is to provide a safe environment for cross dressers' wives everywhere. Since 2006, the website www.crossdresserswives.com has emerged as one of the top support sites designed to address the needs of all women who are (or were) involved in an intimate relationship with a cross dresser. The Forum encourages cross dressers' wives from across the globe to reach out and anonymously share their experiences in an effort to learn from each other without fear of being judged or humiliated.
She was in the process of writing a book about her own life, when finding others who wanted to share their own story, herself and my other guest on today’s show, Brian Sheffield Hunt decided to put all these stories into a wonderful and helpful book “The Cross Dresser’s Wives – Our Secret Lives”.

The book is a powerful and engaging, this international collection of thoughts and short stories emanating from the web site, it offers valuable and emotionally intimate social commentary on the taboo subculture of cross dressing and, for the first time, exposes the shocking secret lives of cross dressers' wives or partners who silently grapple with the issue of cross dressing in their marriage or relationship.
The show brought up many interesting pieces of information about what is basically still a thorny subject of “cross dressing”. Unlike Gay and Lesbian relationships, the fact that your partner is a cross dresser can lay hidden for many years, a large percentage indeed is happily, or so it seems, heterosexual men.

A Brian shares on the web site...

“Multiple thorny issues can surround cross dressing. Often, it involves some sense of romantic betrayal at its deepest, messiest level. These relationships are operatic in scale and shake these women to their core. Why else would a sound woman consider leaving the love of her life and disrupt her family if this issue was merely about ‘scraps of clothing?”

The book consists of five stories that cover many issues and stories submitted to the sites forum submitted by women who wanted to tell their own stories. These stories are sprinkled with other selected posts, all of which are meant to illustrate the powerful ‘emotional speakeasy’ sense of camaraderie, caring, and support that is evident on the Forum on a daily basis.

As one reviewer put it…

“Finally! A book that actually acknowledges that many crossdressers ARE sexually motivated by this "harmless hobby" and that wives are NOT selfish, "uneducated", or unloving if their relationships crumble under the onslaught of the increasingly deviant desires of their partners…
...it should be required reading for everyone involved in a relationship that is faltering from the strain of this - partners who are struggling, ex-partners (who often remain scarred for years), therapists (who may "research" by using the same resources available to the wives), and crossdressers - anyone who truly wants to understand the emotions experienced by the silent partner. These wives valiantly try to hold their families and relationships together in an escalating, isolating, shape-shifting world that tells them that they are "irrational", weak, or prejudiced if they dare to doubt the" truth" of what they are told by the crossdressing communities and their supports...and who ultimately choose to believe in their own perceptions and in the importance of their OWN gender, sexual identity and sexual preferences.

Whether these women stay or leave the relationship, it is an understatement to identify them as courageous, self-sacrificing, and strong...they are survivors!
Highly recommended.”

I would go further than that, not only the book but also a visit to the web site to read and understand just what these woman have gone through. A good start would be to listen to today’s really interesting A Book and a Chat with Dee A Levy and Brian Sheffield Hunt

A Book and a Chat with Carole Eglash-Kosoff

The year has flown by or so it seems, with 155 shows shared with the listeners through the year. Carole Eglash-Kosoff was a previous guest back in July where she shared with us all about her second book, just released called When Stars Align, a historical novel set in the late 19th Century in Louisiana, a time in which the Civil War and the nation's view of slavery were in turmoil. She writes about a taboo interracial relationship in the Deep South. It unveils how slaves, like Rose and Faris, were treated by their slave owners, Jedidiah and Ruby Rogers.

Carole joined us once again on tonight’s “A Book and a Chat” to share with us what she has been up to since the last show, which being Carole has of course meant travelling and about her new book “The Winds of Change”.

This book carries on with the next generation of folk from “When Stars Align” taking the reader through a tumultuous time in American history.

About "Winds of Change":

Winds of Change is a whirlwind novel of bi-racial love set against those forgotten decades that include the Spanish-American War, the San Francisco earthquake, and World War I. It deals with segregation and injustices to Southern black and white communities during the post Civil War period when old attitudes persisted and interracial love led to disastrous consequences. The racially charged love and conflict of the critically acclaimed When Stars Align have become more entrenched. Josiah, Bess, and Stephen discover facts about themselves that refute everything they believed regarding both their parents and their racial background. Loves are thwarted as they each struggle with echoes of their past.

It is a tumultuous time in American history that includes the inventions of airplanes, automobiles, telephones and movies, amidst decades of lynchings and economic turmoil. Racial biases complicate lives and relationships as newly arrived immigrants vie with white and Negro workers all trying to gain a piece of the American dream. It is a socially relevant, historically accurate, saga of decades often overlooked in American history. Winds of Change follows the next generation from those we came to know in When Stars Align

Winds of Change is a soaring historic fiction novel that stands alone but follows the next generation from those we came to know in When Stars Align into the 20th century. It is a socially relevant, historically accurate, saga of decades often overlooked in American history. A great read for all!

A Book and a Chat with Bonnie Barnett

To find out at the age of four that there was such a thing as a Dad, let alone that he famous and then add to that that he was part of a circus with all the strange sites and sounds that environment brings is something a child would remember.

Bonnie Barnett, my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” remembers just that, when she met her father the famous “Bobo the Clown”.

One Saturday morning four year old Bonnie’s mom; with Bonnie in tow set out to meet the man Bonnie realized was told was her father. The pair entered a very different world filled with horses and elephants, trailers and trucks and little pens filled with small barking dogs and even a giraffe. It was all a bit overwhelming for a little girl. Suddenly a large person in torn, musty clothing appeared; he had red and black and white paint on his face. Lifting Bonnie the man said, -How about a kiss for your ol daddy?-

Before long a troupe of folks appeared, some wearing face paint, some in sequined costume, they all seemed to know who Bonnie was and; they even her Mom, Dottie. Called Jojo Barnett, Dorothy was the first girl clown.

When Bobo lifted her to kiss her, someone snapped a photograph that was later used on the front page of the newspaper. Many years later, Ro Kim, an incredibly talented artist from Korea was commissioned by Bonnie to paint this moment from a tattered newspaper clipping to give to her father for his 80th birthday. Ro's artistic gift brought this memory to life, and thus begins the tale of Bobo's Daughter.

In Bonnie’s book “Bobo’s Daughter”, from that point the reader is carried along on the journey of a small girl, her tumultuous relationship with her mother and her search for the man who was her father.

Bobo was one of the world’s most famous clowns, a veteran performer for the Shrine Circus, The Ed Sullivan Show, and other productions, well known for his “little car” which now resides in the Clown Hall of Fame. (see fil clip at end of this article)

Though his star persona was always present in the periphery of her life, she rarely heard from him, and the inconsistency of her mother, a former clown herself, only exacerbated her loneliness.

As she entered adulthood, put herself through college, and sought spiritual fulfillment, Bonnie found herself seeking out her father at every turn. It wasn’t until she finally showed up at his doorstep that he stopped being a larger-than-life myth and became a very human father, full of faults, regrets, and love.

Bobo's Daughter offers the reader a peek into the man who was Bobo, the clown and some of the life experienced by those who choose a career in the circus.

What People say about "Bobo's Clown"

"I couldn't put it down . . . it's touching and contains lessons in persistence, following your heart and forgiveness. -- Lynn Polke, Dancer ,Trapeze and Aerialist Artist, Elephant Empress and Animal Trainer, Ringling Bros. Circus

"Working with hundreds of memoirists , no life story has taught me more about how to heal through love." -- Tristine Rainer, Story Editor, Television Producer, Author of Your Life As Story and The New Diary

A Book and a Chat with Daren Krupa

My guest today‘s "A Book and a Chat" is Daren Krupa, at the age of fifteen he was given an assignment by his English teacher, who obviously knew the potential laying within the none creative writing Daren, to write a “meaning of life” essay. As Daren said during the show, “how could a boy of fifteen have any idea about the true meaning of life?”

This did not stop Daren from going into the realms of literature as he worked as a newspaper reporter, photographer and editor.

Seventeen years ago he wrote his first and as yet unpublished novel entitled “Squaw Peak”, typing it out on an old manual typewriter, cutting and pasting until he had a completed draft.

Seventeen years later, his second and first published novel “Such a Nice Boy” was much easier to produce though as Daren shared it did take him ten years and numerous re-writes and edits.

"Such a Nice Boy" is about a man who leads a gay life because he’s afraid of his feelings for women. It’s a lifelong conversation Daren has been having with himself about sexuality. He wanted to write a contemporary gay-straight romance since my early Twenties, when he was dating women and made himself admit he liked looking at guys. The writing of the book has not only helped Daren come to terms with his life but also been somewhat of a healing process.

About “Such a Nice Boy”:

It’s the summer of 1999 in Denver. Alan Hovey is living the life he dreamed: sex with handsome, buffed, eager men. Except he isn’t gay. Made no difference until he crossed paths with female co-worker Lindsey Ronan and her infant son Morgan. He starts getting notions about Lindsey, and being a heterosexual father whenever he’s holding Morgan.

Lindsey is married and afraid of Alan because of a traumatizing incident during college.

At work Alan has become a pariah for having boldly stood up for himself. He draws the attention of Frank Lively, VP of HR, homophobic and deeply closeted. Frank tries to harass Alan into quitting.

After Lindsey verbally demolishes him while shopping for making eyes at another, Alan meets a young man who says you’re with me because you’re mad at Lindsey.
Alan becomes more confused after accidently seeing Lindsey at work with her blouse off, and displays a very obvious reaction.

The path Alan follows and the choices he makes form the heart of a boy who at age forty two becomes a man. He crawls out of a family upbringing filled with death and chooses life. His coming of age is unique and compelling.

Daren shared with us, how he is already working on his next book, which I’m sure will take a lot less than ten years to write and will provide further proof that the English teacher knew inside Daren there was a budding author waiting to share his talent with the world

So listen to an interesting and hugely entertaining show as I spend thirty minutes sharing "A Book and a Chat with Daren Krupa".

A Book and a Chat with Jennie Helderman

Jennie Helderman makes a welcome return visit to A Book and a Chat today, to tell us more about herself and her wonderful book “As the Sycamore Grows” and what has gone on since she was last on the show.

Jennie was a “girl power” forerunner, when at the age of ten she became the first girl page in the Alabama State Legislature.

That surge of girl power wouldn’t be the last time she saw a need to put women’s issues at the forefront. Years later, after she helped set up a crisis-call center in an old house, a cry for help at the other end of the phone line resounded in her head. That call was the catalyst; eventually, the empty bedrooms upstairs served as the community’s first shelter for victims of domestic abuse.

Through years of helping champion women’s and children’s issues and working with child abuse victims Jennie put her own mark on the Alabama human rights issues.

Jennies reputation has been enhanced by her wonderful, and as we heard during the show now multi award winning book “As the Sycamore Grows”.

The book is the true story– real names–of a seventeen year abusive marriage; a Sleeping with the Enemy in the Tennessee backwoods, as told by Ginger, who escaped, and Mike, who abused and holds no remorse.

As the Midwest Book Review wrote about this interesting and thought provoking book…

“…a life-story of emancipation, personal fulfillment and escape—not only from a padlocked cabin in the woods, but from a backwards anti-feminist culture into the broader world of contemporary human rights that is America’s mainstream….”

This is a book, that as we heard, is appealing to men and woman alike and keeping Jennie busy being guest speaker at many locations and events, with the possibility of a film also now under discussion it’s always good to have this interesting lady as a guest on the show.

A Book and a Chat with Charles Barrett

One of the things that often come up during chats with authors especially newly published is how much work there is after their book has been published. I often say, in many ways that is when the work really starts. Charles Barrett, my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is a person who can help with the media relationship and marketing that so many authors are looking for.

Charlie moved from a background in newspapers on the east coast to being a publicist amongst the stars in Hollywood. His company “The Barrett Company” was set up in Los Angeles in 1992 as a full service media relations and media marketing communications agency.

The company opened a book division some 12 years ago with author and Hollywood producer Marty Jurow (he produced "Breakfast at Tiffany's") and his book "Seein' Stars: A Show Biz Odyssey" from Southern Methodist University Press. Since then the firm has represented such companies as Simon & Schuster, Warner Brothers, Paramount, as well as Johnny Carson, Ed McMahon, Kevin Costner, author Carla Malden (daughter of Oscar winner actor Karl Malden), and other well known companies, personalities and authors.

Charlie shared with us, how he is proud of how the company emphasizes close and personal attention for each of our clients in books, TV and films and how they are available to hear from them almost 24 hours a day with e-mail, texting and phone. From TV shows such as "The Tonight Show," to bestselling books such as "Laughing Out Loud," The Barrett Company “has worked with many clients, in numerous areas. Be it a major publisher or a small self published author, Charlie Barrett and “The Barrett Company” has a media package for you.

A Book and a Chat with "Annette Fuson"

After twenty years of teaching, Annette Fuson, has shared her knowledge in "Straight Talk for Teenage Girls". This is a book that provides straight-forward and useful advice, ideas and solutions for dealing with real world situations that all girls need as they mature.

A book has recently been accepted by two companies that are widely used by school libraries, namely Perma Bound and Follett. Annette hopes that Straight Talk will become an essential addition to middle school and high school libraries around the country.

During the show Annette explained how the book is not a "do this... don't do that' sort of book, but one where she provides information, allowing the person to make their own choice, from an educated stand point.

"Straight Talk For Teenage Girls" touches on a variety of issues that teens are confronted with on a daily basis, such as gaining self-esteem, managing emotions, building friendships, coping with problems and learning how to avoid serious mistakes. As well as touching on controversial of subjects, discussing ways to recognize controlling behavior from a boyfriend or girlfriend and how to handle drug and alcohol abuse, promiscuity and teen pregnancy.

The self-tests, case studies at each chapter and the 50 questions from real girls, make the book not only ideal for teenagers, but also for adults who work with teens use the book for discussions. Already used in many schools and groups, this book is a must for all teenage girls.

So check out today's show as we find out about Annette Fuson, and her book "Straight Talk for Teenage Girls" in what was a really interesting and entertaining show.
