A Book and a Chat with Lorene Burkhart

If you have ever thought about writing a book yourself, then my guest on todays "A Book and a Chat" shows it's never too late to start writing.

Lorene Burkhart finally wrote her first book when she was seventy, since that time she has completed six books, covering her life growing up on a farm, children’s stories and the book we mainly chatted about today ”Sick of Doctors? Then Do Something About It”.

Let’s face it, we are all patients from the time we’re born until the time we die. The question is: How do we as patients become empowered in a medical culture that historically leaves us doing what the doctor says?

In this groundbreaking book, Lorene challenges each of us to enter the era of empowered patients by letting go of past practices and embracing outcome-based medical services. Being accountable for one's own body and health is a huge step toward improved medical relationships. She rejects the old authoritarian system of "handing it over" to a doctor as one that is no longer appropriate or wise, and that made its exit when the Internet made its entrance. Using a variety of resources as a guide, she encourages patients to be their own medical advocates with the ultimate reward being their own good health.

Items like items to prepare before visiting your doctor, questions to be asked, even remembering to say thank you were discussed fascinating show.

Though in her mid seventies, Lorene I’m sure will be continue producing books for all ages, from the young to the not so young.

So sit back and enjoy toady’s “A Book and a Chat with Lorene Burkhart

A Book and a Chat with C.W. Gortner

I was really pleased to have C. W. Gortner as the guest on tonight’s a book and a chat.

His book “The Last Queen", has been written about and discussed throughout the blogosphere, and his new book “The Confessions of Catherine de Medici” looks to spread the name and fame of this author even further.

At a young age C.W. and his family moved to Malaga in southern Spain and there I began my life-long fascination with history. His mom gave him my first historical novel when he was nine (it was ‘Murder Most Royal’ by Jean Plaidy) and after that he was hooked.

After 13 years of rejections followed by a brief stint with an independent micro-publisher, he decided to self publish. It ended up being a wonderful and informative experience; he helped set up a company with a group of like-minded friends and they published thier books, as well as a few others.

Of the four original partners, three of writers including C.W. went on to secure commercial publishing contracts with established houses.

The Last Queen:

Daughter of Isabel and Ferdinand of Spain,Juana la Loca, is one of history's most enigmatic and forgotten queens, “The Last Queen” tells the story of her tumultuous life. From the somber majesty of Spain to the glittering and lethal courts of Flanders, France, and Tudor England, The Last Queen brings to life all the grandeur and drama of an incomparable era and the singular humanity of a courageous, passionate princess whose fight to claim her birthright captivated the world.

The Confessions of Catherine de Medici:

At the age of fourteen, Catherine de Medici, last legitimate descendant of the Medici blood, finds herself betrothed to the King Francois I’s son, Henri. Sent from her native Florence to France, humiliated and overshadowed by her husband’s life-long devotion to his mistress, when tragedy strikes her family Catherine rises from obscurity to become one of 16th century Europe’s most powerful women. From the splendors of the Loire palaces to the blood-soaked battles of the Wars of Religion and haunted halls of the Louvre, this is the story of Catherine’s dramatic life, told by the queen herself.

Add to this the new start of a new mystery series, “The Tudor Secret”, the first book in his new Tudor suspense series ”The Elizabeth I Spymaster Chronicles.” As well as the work he now has underway on "The Princess Isabella", C.W. Gortner is a name that you will soon find on many bookshelves.

So sit back and listen to a truly entertaining thirty minutes as we talk about subjects from books to Tudor dancing on today’s “A Book and a Chat with C.W.Gortner”

A Book and a Chat with Cindy Bradford

Though my guest today has been a writer most of her life, it was not until she retired that she wrote her first novel.

Cindy Bradford got the idea from a dream, which flowered into her debut novel “Keeping Faith” which has since been followed by the second book of the series “Promises Kept.”

With a hobby list that includes traveling,( which she does extensively), gardening, and cooking. Tasting, drinking, collecting, and reading about different kinds of wine and the countries that produce them. It is no wonder that it took until Cindy was retired for her first novel to be produced.

Keeping Faith

Romance readers will fall in love with Faith O’Brien’s gritty determination. After finding the father she never knew until adulthood, and graduating law school, she is focused on bringing down the priest who abused her father as a child. She wants the cunning, deceitful cleric put behind bars long enough that no other young boy will ever have to fear his touch. To do this, she takes on a veteran, highly experienced and shrewd Boston lawyer who will go to any means to win a case. But, he underestimates her passion for justice, her fight for right against a wrong.

Promises Kept

Promises Kept is Faith’s story, an unforgettable young woman whose life’s journey has been filled with uncertainty, of searching for people and answers that others take for granted. Compassionate and courageous, she never gives up, showing strength and character beyond her years. It is also the story about the power of the human spirit, of family, friends and love.

While these books are both contemporary women’s fiction, but numerous men have read the first and told me they really liked it. If they have to go in another category, it would have to be romance, but there is so much more to both of them than just romance.

As Cindy shared through the enjoyable thirty minutes the third book is up to the editing stage with an idea for a fourth book already germinating.

From eating around the world to seeing both Oh Calcutta and Hair in New York, the program with this delightful lady was one all would enjoy. So why not sit back and listen to today’s show… “A Book and a Chat with Cindy Bradford”.

A Book and a Chat with Jason M Alster

From trips to Israel to Natural Solutions For ADHD , Dyslexia , and Test Anxiety, throw in a book on creative painting for the young artist and a video on how to improve your handwriting and you have a snap shot of Jason M Alster, my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”.

With so much to cover it was a case of where to start with Jason. Like many children or your people he was told, he would never come to much, be a steady “B” student rather and an “A”, never get anywhere with his writing or his art. This was a challenge to Jason like the hero in “The Hobbit” Jason set out not only on his travels but to prove the “Nay Sayers” wrong.

His book "Leaving Home, Going Home, Returning Home" is a mosaic of vivid snapshots that clearly exhibits a remarkable insight into the heterogeneous and dynamic culture of Israel, while at the same time conveying to the reader the nuances of feelings, as well as the harshness of reality. And for anyone contemplating learning about life or even visiting Israel, this is a must read.

From this great book we followed Jason through his “Creative Painting For The Young Artist”.

A self help book for the young person who wants to choose art as a subject or the youngster who thinks art is not for him. This book shows the steps one needs to be a creative artist early on. It includes how to get over artist block, develop and artist statement, how to choose a subject to paint, develop an artist's mode of seeing, develop a composition, relaxation exercises for the young artist, art self critique and self promotion.

From there our discussion in today’s program moved to “Being In Control: Natural Solutions for ADHD, Dyslexia Dysgraphia, and Test Anxiety”. A book about natural techniques for improving relaxed concentration in the classroom and at home. Includes study strategies, creativity, personal achievement, all in a graphic picture mode.

As I said at the start with Jason it was a case of where to start and as the show shared, it’s not over yet for this talented writer.

A Book and a Chat with Suzi Katz

My guest on “A Book and a Chat” is way more than just a writer talking about her debut book. Suzi Katz is a person who helps put the belief back into human nature.

Suzi is a working mother, volunteer and passionate youth advocate, focusing on teens and helping them build positive futures.

Her commitment to young people drives her personal and professional lives the release of her debut novel “A Life Revealed” has also lead to the launch of Suzi Katz Books, a publishing house dedicated to exploring the lives of young adults and the complicated choices they face each day.

In true Suzi tradition of helping others, and her support of children’s causes, a portion of the proceeds from the sales of A Life Revealed will be donated to the International Child Art Foundation (www.icaf.org), a non-profit organization that integrates arts with science, sport and technology for the development of children’s creativity and empathy.

Katz’s tireless efforts have been recognized with awards and accolades from organizations including the University of Central Florida’s Student Development and Enrollment Services, the Institute for International Sport, Fitchburg State College, Orlando Magazine and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

During the show I’m sure even though we learned much about this fascinating lady, we only scratched the surface of Suzi Katz.

A Life Revealed” (Amazon Review)

Tragedy can strike in a split second. But what if that tragedy brings with it both heartache and mystery? After her parents are killed, seventeen-year-old Chloe Jacobs discovers that she's been part of the Witness Security Program her entire life. While enduring twenty-four hour protection from U.S. Marshals, Chloe secretly searches through her tangled family history...and realizes that in order to find the truth, she'll have to fight for her safety, dreams, love...and ultimately her life.

With, as we learned a second novel on the way I’m sure we’ll hear more about this lady and her writings, so why not listen to as Suzi Katz is my guest on today's a Book and a Chat.

A Book and a Chat with Kitty Keswick

There are some shows that you really look forward to presenting, be it the person or the subject. Others provide a pleasant surprise at the enjoyment they bring. Not that I don’t enjoy chatting to all my guests.

Today was one of those shows that I have been looking forward to, partly because in this case I have actually meat the author, secondly that I know she loves the English accent *grin*, finally that her book is one a lot of people have read and enjoyed.

A Book and a Chat with my guest Kitty Keswick lived up to all my expectations, as we chatted about her and her “romance with a bite” debut YA book “FREAKSVILLE”.

About Kitty Keswick:

We chatted about how she has been a writer from her earliest days when a four line story lead to her winning a prize and several other awards at the age of eight, to jotting down stories in exercise books still stored under her bead. From voices in your head that tell you the story or lead the writer down whatever path they chose, many issues were discussed.

About Freaksville:

As one blogger so birlliantly put it…

"Freaksville is a laugh-out-loud chronicle of Kasey Maxwell’s venture into ghost hunting, all things paranormal, and her first real boyfriend. Written as a series of blog entries, complete with comments, Ms. Keswick not only moves the young adult novel into the modern era, but also hooks the readers with her fun, flowing style and irrepressible sense of humor. From her witty chapter headings to the mystery surrounding the ghosts inhabiting the school’s theater to all the yet-unmentioned surprises lurking within, the author will capture your attention and hold it hostage until you’ve reached the end. A highly enjoyable read that left me anxious for the sequel. (aurorareviews.blogspot.com)"

Well folks you won’t have to wait long, as Kitty shared the second book of this trilogy is going through the editing stage, it is “a little hairier” (Kitty’s Joke not mine) and is one that I for one am certainly looking forward to reading and I hope having Kitty back on the show to chat about.

The show covered every part of the book and the author and many other matters as well and proved to be a very enjoyable sixty minutes. So listen and enjoy this hugely entertaining author, on todays "A Book and a Chat with Kitty Keswick""

A Book and a Chat with Sam Hilliard

One of the things about my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” was that he was baptized on five different occasions—once in the back of a speeding Dodge Satellite—before reaching the age of six months. The family it seems had taken matters into their own hands had worried his father’s procrastination and daredevil driving would prevent the ceremony from ever happening.

Perhaps because of this my chat with today’s guest “Sam Hilliard” started with a phone call that sounded like it was coming from underwater, I did wonder if it was yet another baptism.

However eventually we got sorted and went on to discuss both Sam, and his book “The Last Track” which is the first but by no means the last of the “Mike Brody” series.

So who is “Mike Brody”?

Mike Brody is the man you want, when the one you love is missing. He’s able to tap into the memories and emotional charges left behind by the missing in their tracks and visualize the events that led to their disappearance. The series will follow the adventures of Mike, his ex-wife Jessica and a cast of recurring characters, as he moves from case to case, searching for that mission that will finally heal his childhood wounds.

In this first book The Last Track, Mike is pulled in by the police to help find an asthmatic boy lost in the dense woods surrounding a dude ranch in Montana. An unwitting murder witness, the boy burrows ever deeper into the rugged terrain, fearful of being found. As Mike and a local officer search for the boy, the killer follows them.
While the investigation expands, Mike’s ex-wife, a well-connected journalist, uses her contacts to unravel the truth behind the murder. Her discoveries threaten to snare them all in a treacherous conspiracy.
During the show Sam discussed his journey to publication as well as his plans for possibly another seven books in the series.

A Book and a Chat with Marla Martenson

If you’re looking for ”Mr Right” instead of “Mr Right-now”, or you just enjoy a good laugh then the books of my guest on “A Book and a Chat”… Marla Martenson is the author for you.

From her early days when she wanted to be anything from a singer to a TV presenter, Marla had stardust in her eyes, this eventually lead her to Hollywood where her acting career included television commercials and print modeling, as well of course as the required stint waiting on tables. This was not all as we heard how she also attempted to “chat up” Rod Stewart during this table waiting period.

She used her own dating experiences to help others, turning this talent into a career as a matchmaker back in Los Angeles, where, since 2001, her skills have led many couples to matrimony.

This developed into her first book “Excuse Me, Your Soul Mate Is Waiting” in which she combined her talent and wisdom with sure-fire techniques of the Law of Attraction to help you bring that special love into your life. This was closley followed by her second book “Good Date, Bad Date” a guide t for single women who are tired of trying to figure out the secrets to successful dating.

Marala’s latest book is “Diary of a Beverly Hills Matchmaker” in which Marla takes her readers for a hilarious romp through her days in an exclusive L.A. matchmaking agency and her daily struggles to keep her self-esteem from imploding in a town where looks are everything and money talks.

The show was filled with humor and wonderful anecdotes, from this great author, who is already working on a second volume and even a TV show as a follow up to “Diary of a Beverly Hills Matchmaker

From her early days to her search for stardom, the matchmaking to traveling all over the world, this lady who describes herself as describes herself as having a “French flair, a Persian heart, Italian fire, and Mexican taste buds.” Made the show one you will not want to miss.

A Book and a Chat with Lloyd Kaneko

Lloyd Kaneko is my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”.

Back in the 1970’s Lloyd was driving through the “skid row” of downtown Los Angeles after school one afternoon and was deeply moved by all the homeless people living in cardboard boxes, pushing shopping carts and sleeping on the sidewalks. He was taking courses through the Writers Guild of America, West and decided to start a screenplay on the subject.

Thirty years later, he dusted off the dusted off the screenplay and turned it into his debut novel “Kami Jin”.

As Lloyd explained during the show, he has always written in some form, he is a former Staff Writer for Drum Corps News, and has written for various other magazines, newsletters, and blogs including Scenario.SC. and Allvoices. He also writes screenplays and is a member of the Alameda Writers Group. Lloyd has Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing from California State University, Long Beach and has studied creative writing under Dora Beale Polk.

Although the book is based on fictional characters from a fictional Pacific island of “Napajan,” the phrase “Kami Jin” is Japanese and has multiple meanings. The word “kami” by one translation means “paper.” The word “jin” is translated into the English word “person or people.” Hence, “paper people.” Coincidentally, kami jin can also be translated into “godly person.” And, Gordon Sakata develops characteristics of a “godly person” through his “sermons on the mount” after being abducted into the Sierra-Nevada Mountain range and is forced to survive there for a few months.

One interesting item that came up during the show was the link his book has with Eco-Libris. Their “One tree planted for this book" logo is proudly displayed on Llods book cover. This states that for every printed copy of the book, Eco-Libris will plant at least one tree in the world. So far Eco-Libris balanced out over 145,000 books, which results in more than 158,000 new trees planted with its planting partners in developing countries.

A Book and a Chat with Saundra Mitchell

Today on "A Book and a Chat" I was talking with the multi award winning author Saundra Mitchell about her life and her debut book "Shadowed Summer".

Saundra shared with us some of her early experiences, from writing a play on fourth grade where the hero kept getting punched, to her time in the armed forces and what lead to her leaving them.

During a thoroughly enjoyable sixty minute program, we covered all the aspects of not on writing, but editing and promoting as well, items that were enjoyed by the numerous guests we had in the chat room.

So what about Saundra, I can do nothing better than add what she herself says about her work…

Saundra Mitchell is a longtime screenwriter and author. Random House's Delacorte Press published her debut novel, Shadowed Summer, on February 10th, 2009. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Children's will publish her next novel, The Vespertine.

For almost ten years, she was the sole screenwriter for the Book of Stories, On the Road, Fresh Films and Girls in the Director's Chair short film series. In 2008, she headed and instructed the first Fresh Films Emerging Screenwriters program, and became the Head Writer and an Executive Producer for the film series.

Shadowed Summer is the 2010 winner of The Society of Midland Authors Book Award for Children's Fiction, and a 2010 Edgar® Award Nominee. It was chosen as a Junior Library Guild selection, and an ALAN Pick in 2009. Her short story "Ready to Wear" was nominated for a 2007 Pushcart Prize after appearing in Vestal Review Issue 27. In July, 2007, her essay, "Rapid Cycling," appeared in Common Ties.

Her short story, "Management" appeared in Zen Film's anthology "Love & Sacrifice" in February, 2007, and another short, "Kissing the Dog-Faced Boy" appeared in The Summerset Review's Spring Issue, 2007. She has also published in SmokeLong Quarterly, Edgar Literary Magazine, and The Parnassus.

Other screenwriting accomplishments include scripting Scholastic's "Get Active with Widget" webisode "Treasure Hunt" and the 2006 Girls in the Director's Chair image campaign (the foundation for a national PSA in association with Women in Film.) In 2005, she concept-designed and scripted the Metro Chicago United Way's Leadership Campaign. Her first feature film, Revenge Ends, will debut on the festival circuit in 2008.

Her films have been selected for competition at many national and international film festivals, including the juried Rhode Island International Film Festival and the Chicago International Children's Film Festival. In 2006, "Goodbye, Howard" and "Last Time We Met" were selected as part of the inaugural Chicago International New Filmmakers Festival. "Goodbye, Howard" was also selected as one of the Top 4 Best of Fest at the Gen Art Film Festival in 2006.

"No. 72" and "The Super Dupers" were selected to premiere at the Los Angeles International Short Film Festival. These festivals are recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as Academy AwardTM qualifying events. Also in 2006, the 10th annual Webby Awards named Fresh Films an official honoree.
In other arenas, Ms. Mitchell was interviewed by the New York Times and the BBC for her part in exposing the Kaycee Nicole hoax, and she's been tapped by morning radio shows all over the United States as a guest expert on Urban Legends & Folklore.

All this however does not show the humor of her chat nor the sharing of her work that Saundra produced during the show. From the 1140 rejections before “Shadowed Summer” got an agent and latterly a publisher, to the pure joy in her voice when she talks about her new book The Vespertine.

A Book and a Chat with T. P. Jones

I am very pleased to have a previous guest back on today’s “A Book and a Chat”. T.P. Jones was previous on the show chatting about his life and his book “Jackson” which was the first book in the “Loss of Certainty Trilogy”.

Today Tom was back talking about the second book in the trilogy “The Gamble” .

Problems continue to accumulate in Jackson, Iowa. With the rising unemployment and stress on the budget, the city asks the public unions to take a 10 percent pay cut, an unprecedented proposal. The largest of the city unions responds by recruiting a new negotiator, Deuce Goetzinger, a man without negotiating experience but smart and tough, and Goetzinger counters the pay-cut proposal with one of his own, one so radical that it would change the power relationships in city hall should it ever be instituted. Thus begins a cat-and-mouse game between Goetzinger and Aggie Klauer, the city’s negotiator.

Despite the harsh winter conditions, the city is constructing a dog track on an island in the middle of the Mississippi River, taking advantage of a recently passed pari-mutuel law and rushing in order to have the first track built in the state. As Jackson’s old industrial base fades away, the city is staking its economic future on gambling and tourism. Given the high unemployment, Mayor El Plowman moves to make more of the track construction work available to local contractors, but like everything else she tries, this leads to consequences she would never have imagined, adding yet one more burden to the city in this, its year of troubles.

The dead of winter now, blizzards sweeping across the landscape in rapid succession, the conditions foretelling a massive spring flood mount up one after another.

As Tom shared with us during the show, this the second book is already out and doing well, with the third and final book “River Rising” due out in September. Along the way he also a brief preview of a novel he is currently working on set in Arizona.

A Book and a Chat with Patricia A. Thomas

Over the July 4th holiday I was with my good friend M.J Allaire signing and selling books at the Groton (CT) "Sub Fest". MJ has written (so far) four books in her "Denicalis Dragon Chronicles". You may wonder what this has to do with my guest on today's "A Book and a Chat"

My guest today is Patricia A. Thomas who has written in her book " God Reveals a Mystery" her belief in the connection between dragons dinosaurs and snakes.

God first opened her spiritual eyes to the truth and spoke this revelation knowledge to Patricia, concerning the demise of the “dinosaur”, in 1997 and from that she wrote a poem, with the foundation being that the name “dinosaur” was coined or made-up in 1842 and the real animal's name is serpent or dragon (both names mean the same thing in Greek) and that they still exist- in its cursed form according to Genesis 3:14.

From that start it only took her a few months to write the manuscript and in 2006, God gave her the scientific information to write the book to prove that my theory would eventually become a fact, at the appointed time, unlike other theories that will never be proven. That year, in 2006, “God Reveals a Mystery” was published.

About “God Reveals a Mystery”

Lies and myths surround the dragon. With so many distorted pieces to a complex puzzle, only God can sort through the complexity of falsehoods and reveal the truth with simplicity. God knows everything and He can give you the solution to a puzzle that man could never fathom. Many know, especially in the continent of Asia, that the fictitious or mythical dinosaurs’ fossils really belong to the dragons'. Well, what happened to the dragons? There has to be an answer out there somewhere and there is. The God-given answer will surprise many. But, knowing the truth will set you free!

During the show Patricia shared much about how the book came about, the way is has been received and how she has developed the book also shortly adding visual imagery to help spread the word.
