A Book and a Chat with Tamera Will Wissinger

It is a pleasure to have another of the member of the Class of 2K13 (debut YA and mid grade authors) in the form of Tamera (like camera) Will Wissinger. Who joined me to chat about her debut book “Gone Fishing”, a charming new children’s novel written in verse.

The middle of three children Tamera remembers well going fishing with her parents when she was young, and I still when her schedules allow, going fishing with her husband. In fact several scenes from the book are taken straight from her family fishing experiences.

About “Gone Fishing” (taken from authors web site):

Using a wide variety of poetic forms – quatrains, ballads, iambic meter, rhyming lists, concrete poetry, tercets and free verse – this debut author tells the story of a nine-year-old boy’s day of fishing. Sibling rivalry, the bond between father and son, the excitement – and difficulty – of fishing all add up to a day of adventure any child would want to experience.

Matthew Cordell illuminates this novel-in-verse throughout with his energetic black-and-white line drawings.
While each poem can be read and enjoyed on its own, the poems work together to create a story arc with conflict, crisis, resolution and character growth.

The back matter of this book equips the reader with a Poet’s Tackle Box of tools and definitions for understanding the various poetic forms the author uses in this story.

The book has received numerous praising reviews from people of all ages.

"Just the thing for readers with a burgeoning interest in poetry—or angling."
—Publishers Weekly

"A playful verse narrative of the joys and perils of a family fishing trip. . . . This tender, well-crafted sibling story should hook many readers."
—Kirkus

"Engaging verse that's just the right depth and length for chapter-book readers. . . A solid, entertaining story to hook children on poetry."
—Booklist

"All of Sam's episodes take the form of poems, each discreetly labeled by its poetic form, which is then defined at the end of the book. . . most will enjoy the notion that there are as many ways to tell a tale as to catch a fish."

—Bulletin

The book is a delightful book that not only will entertain readers of all ages with a compelling storyline, as well as introduce them to many forms of poetry.

A Book and a Chat with Mike Lynch

My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” could be said to be a late bloomer in the literary world his first book finally saw the light of literary day decade after he first wrote it, so saying since that first completion Mike Lynch has continued to produce one “must read” novel after another covering many different book store shelves.

Mike’s first novel “When the Sky Fell” which was jointly written with Brandon Barr will soon be joined by a follow up sci-fi novel “After the Sky Fell”. However Mike’s latest novel is in fact a romance story “Love’s Second Chance”.

About “Love’s Second Chance”: (taken from Mike Web Page)

Everyone deserves a second chance in life, no matter how unlikely. Dana Rogers learns this powerful truth while she serves as the pastor's assistant at New Covenant Church, the center of community life in the town of Fairhaven for the past two hundred years. There she has caught the eye of Evan Johnson, a successful real estate agent and kindred spirit. But the tragic death of her fiancé has wounded her so deeply she has vowed never to love another man again, including Evan.

A steady decline in church attendance the past few months has become a source of concern for Dana, which if not stopped she fears it could have an adverse affect on the town. Despite her strong resistance, Evan helps Dana work through the pain of her loss, developing a relationship with her neither of them thought possible. In a stunning turn of events, New Covenant Church suffers a devastating setback, one that threatens to undo everything Dana has worked to save, including the first embers of a relationship with Evan.

As one reviewer stated… “This book gets two thumbs up from me. If you love a good romance, this book is a must read...” a comment I totally agree with.

A Book nd a Chat with Robert Henry

On Today’s “A Book and a Chat” I have a guest that will help many of us slightly older readers, whose doctor might have told them “You’re not getting any younger”.

Robert Henry, age 56, is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a Certified Personal Trainer, a Certified Specialist in Fitness Nutrition, and a Certified Wellness Coach. His awareness of fitness and nutrition began at the age of 29. When he first started to exercise, it was mostly for the purpose of increasing body weight through the addition of lean muscle mass. However, more than 20 years later, at the age of 52, after years of being lean and enjoying good health, Robert’s experienced an undesired increase in body fat and his health profile changed in the wrong direction

The loss of that body fat and the reversal of new and undesirable trends in his health profile became Robert’s new exercise goals. By re-booting his exercise regimen and further “tweaking” his nutrition, he successfully accomplished his new goals and, as he likes to say, discovered his “inner athlete”.

Robert has now shares his own success and information in his health/fitness how-to book, Age Re-Defined.

About”Age Re-Defined” (taken from Amazon)

Your state of health, how you feel, and how you look are more within your control than you think - even in your forties and fifties (and beyond). This book addresses exercise, fitness, nutrition, wellness, and the mind-body connection. Its purpose is not to promote any particular exercise program or diet plan - although its coverage of exercise, fitness, and nutrition is extensive - but rather to inform, educate, and motivate the reader on the importance of being proactive in one's own health, fitness, and wellness. Even if you are already physically active, this book can assist you in evaluating the effectiveness of your current exercise efforts. Not only does the book cite to other authorities, but it also conveys the author's own journey and his own positive results achieved through exercise, nutrition, and the mind-body connection.

The importance of nutrition is explained and heavily stressed. One comes away with an increased or renewed awareness of the importance of quality nutrition in optimal health, fitness, and wellness. Other apsects of wellness - apart from exercise and nutrition - are also addressed. A foundational background in exercise and fitness concepts is provided. The author shares his own philosophy of exercise and his own health and fitness journey, with particular emphasis on the challenges faced by him in his early fifties and the favorable health and fitness results he obtained at that age by "re-booting" his commitment to health and fitness.

As stated in the book's Introduction: This book is about believing in yourself, maintaining inner strength, and understanding exercise, fitness, nutrition, and wellness. This book is also about getting younger instead of getting older, discovering your inner athlete, and becoming and remaining healthy and fit in both body and mind. This book is for people who have never exercised but would like to start; for people who would like to know more about good nutrition; for people who exercise but have not seen results; for people whose fitness level has declined and who want to re-ignite their fitness quest; for people who choose to be proactive about their own health, fitness and wellness; for people interested in the mind-body connection; and for people who reject negative self-talk and self-limiting stereotypes about life after the age of 50. All ages are welcome.

A Book and Chat with Hunter Shea

While some authors get their start listening to parents reading fairy stories or reading the likes of the Little House series, Hunter Shea however did his learning in front of the TV or at a drive and is the product of a childhood weaned on The Night Stalker, The Twilight Zone and In Search.  That being the case it’s no wonder that he has turned out to be a “Master of Paranormal Horror”.

Hunter is the author of such books as Forest of Shadows, Evil Eternal , Swamp Monster Massacre and Sinister Entity  he is also proud to be one half of the Monster Men video podcast, which along with his partner in crime, Jack Campisi produce a light hearted show with the approach to dark subjects. They explore real life hauntings, monsters, movies, books and everything under the horror sun.

His first big hit was “Forest of Shadows”.

John Backman specializes in inexplicable phenomena. The weirder the better. So when he gets a letter from a terrified man describing an old log home with odd whisperings, shadows that come alive, and rooms that disappear, he can’t resist the call. But the violence only escalates as soon as John arrives in the remote Alaskan village of Shida. Something dreadful happened there. Something monstrous. The shadows are closing in…and they’re out for blood.

Now in his latest release we are once again introduced to the Backman family this time in the form of John daughters Jessica in the free, yes “Free”  “The Graveyard Speaks”.

About “The Graveyard Speaks”:

Deep in a dark, snow-covered cemetery, a terrifying, moaning apparition rises from the same grave night after night. Even the most hardened caretakers won’t go near the Spooner gravestone on their midnight rounds. Only one ghost hunter has the will to face the unknown, but at what price? In the chilling blackness, only Jessica Backman is prepared to answer the spectral cry from beyond when the graveyard speaks.

Jessica also appears in his other new release “Sinister Entity”.

The Leigh family is terrified. They’ve been haunted by the ghostly image of their young daughter, Selena. But how can that be, when Selena is alive and well, and as frightened as her parents? With nowhere else to turn, the Leighs place their hopes in Jessica Backman, who has dedicated her life to investigating paranormal activity. Accompanied by a new partner who claims to able to speak to the dead, Jessica will soon encounter an entity that scares even her. And a terror far worse than she imagined.

A Book and a Chat with Dilruba Z Ara

On Tuesdays show we had a guest calling in from Fiji discussing a book based in Canada and the Bahamas, today my guest Dilruba Z Ara called in from Sweden and we discussed a book based in Bangladesh.
While the story is set in Bangladesh it is one that can relate to woman around the world, and has proven so with its spread of popularity across many nations and it’s translation into many languages.

It is no surprise Dilruba has become an author of note, literature is in her blood through several generations.  Dilruba was nurtured on Greek mythology by her father, and her mother read her Indian fairytales as bedtime stories. Involved in literary activities throughout her childhood and adolescence, Dilruba had her first story published when she was eight years old.

Her novel “A List of Offences” first introduced in 2006 has been published in Bangladesh, Spain and Greece and is now available both in English and as an E-Book.

About “A List of Offences” (taken from Before It’s News blog):

In a lush Bengali village, a much-longed-for daughter is born with hair the color of sunlight on the river. The shock of the child’s silvery hair makes the midwife wet herself in the birthing room – an omen for village gossip. A life of misfortune is predicted for the baby girl Daria, who grows up not wholly unaffected by the rumors that circulate around her village every time she does anything unusual. The women in her family and in her village expect her to follow the cultural behavior in which women are taught from infancy to keep silent about things that may belittle their value in the marriage market.

Meanwhile, Mizan, an orphan boy, is stranded by the river after a flood. Daria’s parents shelter him, but off stage a servant of the family mistreats him. Because he can read and write, Mizan’s only recourse is to make a secret list of the mistreatments, which he titles “A List of Offences.”

However, Daria’s father, who also fears that village gossip will follow Daria to her future in-laws’ family, plans to save her from her inauspicious destiny by marrying her off with Mizan. But Daria falls in love with handsome lawyer Ali Baba and marries him. Leaving her village for the city and her husband’s home, she finds that his mother is obsessively bitter that he has married a country bumpkin. Daria forces herself to put up with her new family, for as a married woman she no longer belongs to her parental family. Both pride and fear of angering her own mother keep her silent for a long time, until she herself begins to make her own personal “List of Offences” and becomes a mother herself.

As Dilruba states…

“I think what inspired A LIST OF OFFENCES is that I have seen how girls are raised and treated. In Third World countries you can see a pattern where girls always have to fight for their rights – even within the family. They are told to keep quiet: you do not talk about things that might signal you out as an unsuitable girl in your social orbit; even if you’ve been raped you hide that. In the book, Daria’s story is only a micro version of the macro thing that has been happening within families… home has been the center of repression for girls for ages.”

A Book and a Chat with Bob Ferguson

Bob Ferguson is my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”, chatting about his debut book the thriller “Buzzard Bay”. Bob grow up in a remote region of Canada without electricity or telephones, spending many an evening dreaming of faraway places listening to an old battery operated radio.

Later these once dreamed about places became reality as Bob traveled extensively. His trips to the Bahamas formed a basis for Buzzard Bay for the show Bob contacted us from Fiji, where Bob writes and his wife teaches.

Enjoyed by both men and woman, Buzzard Bay gives readers all the adventure and thrill they could ask for in this unputdownable read.

About Buzzard Bay: (taken from authors site)

Bob Green and his family get the opportunity of a lifetime by becoming involved in a new farming project in the Bahamas.  A plane crash confirms his suspicions as to why the farm has been operating at a loss.  The project is not what it seems on the outside.

The discovery of drugs on the airplane put all their lives in jeopardy.  Instead of leaving well enough alone, Green decides to fight back. He becomes involved in a world of intrigue, sex, violence, and drugs.  In doing so, he finds out that there is a fine line between good and evil. An assassination attempt in Canada goes terribly wrong during a vicious snowstorm.

When the sky clears and the bodies pile up, it becomes quite apparent that this was no hunting accident.  Two men escaped.  Bob Green was motivated by the love of his wife and family, Henekie by the death of his best friend and mentor, but mostly by greed.  Unwittingly, these two bitter enemies become embroiled in a bitter power struggle between a Columbian drug lord and the CIA in the Bahamas.

As one reviewer put it…

Buzzard Bay" in an original plot with twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages. A fantastic mystery that includes sex, violence, drugs and romance. I loved his characters as they were strong and independent. I do hope there is a sequel to this book, I want to know what happens! Highly recommended for all readers.

A Book and a Chat about The 30th RT Convention with Brenda Jackson and Guy Cote

Back in the 70’s Kathryn Falk decided to write a reference book entitled LADIES OF THE KNIGHT. While in the process of tracking down publishers, booksellers and authors, and compiling profiles and information, she discovered there was no way of knowing what books were coming out, when and where they would appear, which ones were best, who the authors were or how to write them. As she recalls, "Historical romances by Barbara Cartland, Rosemary Rogers and Jennifer Wilde were selling million of copies, she knew there had to be thousands of women, maybe more, who were curious about this type of reading. This was the start of what has “RT Book reviews”.

Romantic Times are the undisputed experts at reaching romance book lovers and creating a promotional medium for publishers and authors for the sale of even more romances started in the 70’s. Today RT BOOK REVIEWS Magazine reviews every romance published and rates it but it also reviews over 100 books in various other genres.

Next week sees the literary world headed to Kansas City for “The 30th RT Booklovers Convention" which will host over 1000 readers and 400 Bestselling authors.

Today I was lucky enough to have two of the authors who will be appearing at this wonderful event as guest on “A Book and a Chat”, to chat about the convention and their own books.

Brenda Jackson is a mutli award winning author, with a 100 books to her name several of which have gone on to be made into films, next week will be her 15th RT Convention. She is the first African-American romance author to make USA Today’s Bestseller’s List and the New York Times Bestseller’s List for the series romance genre. Her books have such a following she hosts her own cruise for her “literary family”.

Writing several different series she is scheduled to release almost a book a month this year with “A Brothers Honor” coming out in June and three more of the Westmorland, romantic western series scheduled over the summer months.

Guy Cote, will be attending his first RT Convention with his debut thriller “Long Live The King” the first in his “Charlemagne Saga”. Like Brenda he will not only be signing copies of his book and chatting to visitors but also be on a few panels and guest speaker events. His book allows him to share his love for history and travel mixed up with suspense, action, adventure… definitely a name for the future!

While the event covers the days there is also plenty to enjoy at night with balls, dances and fun events scheduled every evening providing more time for readers and authors alike to rub shoulders and chat about the wonderful world of “RT REVIEWS”.

A Book and a Chat with Rick Polson

Whether it’s a new business just starting up or an author with a new book, communication is one of the major aspects of the process. With experience in communication going back to his high school days in the early 70’s, Rick Polson my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” has a lot to share in his new book ”Making a Superstar Company”.

In the book Rick gives new business owners a way to understand the different types of marketing and advertising vehicles available to them. It is written in a style where “you’re sharing a cup of coffee or meal” with the author while he tells you how these things work. There are many historic references and examples to give the reader an understanding of newspaper, radio, cable/TV and the Internet just to name a few.

As discussed during the show much discussed about a new company can also relate to producing a new book.

As Rick says about his book… ”Most small business owners are experts in retail, restaurants, service companies like air conditioning or plumbing, but most have no real grasp on how to gain a customer base and build a business. That’s why I wrote the book. To help them grow and be successful.”

He goes on to tell us that there are plenty of examples in each chapter that the reader can put into place immediately and grow their business successfully. If read a chapter or two at a time, the new business owner can build their organization in steps and be successful. It is also a benefit for business owners of any current business as a review of new ideas.

As one reviewer wrote about the book…

A must read for people starting and or expanding an existing company! Everything you need to know to give you the heads up information wise. Saving you time and mistakes!

A Book and a Chat with Mark Rubinstein

Fellow Connecticut author Mark Rubinstein is the guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”, with a background of medicine and psychiatry which includes several non-fiction books, Mark has now produced his debut fiction novel in the form of the wonderful suspenseful and riveting, “MAD DOG HOUSE”.

The book is a fast passed page turner, a provocative psychological thriller that will keep you as one reviewer stated… “kept reading faster and faster to find out the ending.”

About Mad Dog House:

The action revolves around three men who grew up together and never expected their pasts would come back to haunt them 30 years later. Throughout the novel, the author provokes readers to think about the unrelenting power of the past, and the demons lurking inside others, and perhaps themselves. Rubinstein, a psychiatrist, never lets us forget that no one is ever completely in control of their destiny.

Roddy Dolan was a young man living in Brooklyn with an explosive temper and shady friends, which nearly landed him in prison at 17. If it weren’t for a compassionate judge and the Army, Roddy might have ended up going nowhere.  But that’s the past, gone for good. Or is it?

After escaping his hell on earth – a harrowing childhood in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn – Roddy now has a successful, fulfilling career as a surgeon, a beautiful family, and a lovely home in the suburbs of New York. Today, at age 45, he is a different man and worthy of the respect he has earned. Rage is no longer part of his life. Or, so Roddy thinks...until a friend from the past appears out of the blue and drags him back into the shadows of organized crime and re-evokes his long-buried “Mad Dog” alter ego.

Reviews have been flooding in from many readers with words such as… “can’t put down,’ fast-paced, superbly written thriller” and “In Mark Rubinstein’s Mad Dog House, the characters–all well-developed and dripping with authenticity–propel the novel along with style and edge-of-your-seat excitement. Word of caution: be prepared for an all-night, page-turning read where you will emerge exhilarated and begging for more.”

Well reviewer your wish will be granted, as we discussed during the show, people are already asking for more and the standalone novel will soon have a follow up in the form of “Mad Dog Justice”.
