A Book and a Chat with C.Y. Bourgeois

C.Y Bourgeois (Carla) has always been an avid reader, but it was not until the death of her father that she decided to put pen to paper, or rather fingers to keyboard to produce a book. Originally she was going to write something dedicated to her father, but struggling with exactly what to create she instead produced her debut mystery thriller “Visions of You”.

As we heard through the show it did not end up quite as she set out writing the novel, as the main character changed during the writing to become “Shelby Leight is a wise-cracking, lighthearted teenager, looking forward to a fun-filled senior year in high school”. Using her own own knowledge of Alaska and the town of Palmer, Carla has created a debut novel that as one reviewer put it…

“This book was a wonderful read! You can picture the town and characters and feel like you are there without the story getting bogged down with too much detail. It is a quick read because the end of each chapter leaves you with something that makes you want to keep going and find out what will happen next. The writing style well-suited to young adult and adult readers. This is an excellent freshman effort and I am happy to hear that the sequel is already in the works!”

About “Visions of You”: (taken from books web site)

It’s 1975 in Palmer, a peaceful, sleepy little town in the heart of Southcentral Alaska. Shelby Leight is finally a high school senior and looking forward to having the time of her life. But, as Robert Burns wrote, “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” Instead of having a fun-filled year of football games, parties, and the prom, one of Shelby’s best friends is brutally murdered.

This book gives realistic details of the town and makes you feel like you can see it. Just reading the details of the story made me want to read it right away. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down! Bourgeois did a great job of drawing the reader in and making you want to keep reading until the end. I can't wait for the sequel!

Well reviewer, her follow up novel “Visions of Mortality” is already underway, and as mentioned at the start of the blog, the book dedicated to her father that started Carla down the writing path, that also has now been produced in her story “The Concrete Nome”.

A Book and a Chat with Jackie Carpenter

A journey through life can be like a journey on a boat, you think you are managing and that your faith like the boat on the seas can manage any “bad weather” that comes along. Then suddenly out of a blue sky, your world like your boat is turned upside down everything that you thought and believed is now upside down.

My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is Jackie Carpenter, she found her life and her faith tested beyond what most people can imagine, only to find a knew and inspiration that lead her to write her first book “The Bridge Between Cell Block A and a Miracle is Psalm 91”

Her book is based on the true story of her son Jason Veitch who was falsely accused of Felony Murder. It takes the readers through the actual Murder Trial and down the road of utter helplessness and despair endured by our family and the strong faith that brought us to a place of Victory.

Jackie explained the full story of what happened that fateful night and how her life, the lives of her family and her faith was turned upside down, like that boat in a storm I started this article with.

Jackie explains how she got the title to the book…

God gave me the Title before he gave me the Book. He asked me the question; Jackie, what was the worst part of this ordeal? I said God, that would be when Jason was incarcerated for 9 days. He then asked me; Jackie, what was the best part of this ordeal? I said, God, that would be when we got our Miracle. He then said, Jackie, what is that “Bridge” that joins the worst to the best, and it hit me like a ton of bricks, I cried, Oh God, that would be Psalm 91 God’s Shield of Protection that I had been claiming for Jason for 10 months. He said, now let’s start the book.

As we learned the outcome of what happened did end in a “happy ending” but not before her world like the boat had been turned upside down.

The tragedy led to a walk of faith, fueled by the discovery of the Book of Psalms, that ended in a miracle. The story of the faith walk, discovery, and miracle is told in The Bridge, a compelling can’t put down book that offers a way out for individuals drowning in sorrow, grief, fear, anger or shame. The story of how a tormented mother made a critical decision that allowed God to deliver a miracle is told in Georgia Justice. “God took The Bridge and used it to touch so many hurting people,” says the author. “He put me on four television shows, numerous radio interviews, in newspaper articles, and put my book in hospitals throughout America where it can be picked up by people in need. He has great plans for this Reluctant Author and those plans included using me so He could also write “Georgia Justice.”

As we also learned that voice has again continued to talk to her not only having her tell her story on numerous TV and radio shows, but now start writing a set of books for children.

A Book and a Chat with Jeremy Johnson

My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is Orlando native Jeremy Johnson. As we learned during the show, it’s a blessing that he was even here to chat to us as when he was six months old, his father tried to kill him and his mother.

His creative fervor showed when he was as young as eight when he got sent home after writing a “too nasty for his age” murder story. In high school he wrote several mysteries, and though over the next many years he has worked in theme park management, he has now gone back to use his creative juices with his first, but by no means last novel “Perfect?”

During the show, he described how the idea came to how from a dream, where an autistic child dressed in white was standing in the middle of the road. Though his story is fictional, he has considerable experience with autistic children, which within Perfect’s pages, and many have remarked on, help people understand just how much parents can struggle with children’s imperfections.

“Perfect?" is a mystery novel in which a wealthy family copes badly in adapting to a five-year-old daughter who is discovered to be autistic.

About “Perfect?”:

The McDaniel family seems to have a perfect life: wealth, prestige and privilege. One night the mother, Jenna—who has a problem with alcohol and prescription drugs—goes out with the girls and ends up with a one-night-stand that changes her life forever. She becomes pregnant by the stranger, and after some years it is discovered that her daughter is autistic. The mother struggles with the child’s imperfection and is ultimately driven to seek the help of a kidnapper/killer. Her husband determinedly investigates his daughter’s disappearance.

Readers will witness a kidnapping, murder, and a shocking ending to a story that is pageturningly unforgettable. With a second book “Behind the Stained Glass" already with his publisher, a third in the editing stage and a fourth already underway, as I said at the beginning, the name Jeremy Johnson is one we’ll hear a lot more about.

A Book and a Chat with Jeff Sharrett

My guest on today’s A Book and a Chat is mystery writer Jeff Sharrett, sharing with us about his Jimmy O’Brien books, including his new book “Detour to Murder”.

As we heard during the show, Jeff has had enough experiences during his life to fill several books of his own story, from flying a plane for a gambling relative to writing biographies for would be politicians. And while there are no exact links to the characters in his so far four books, you can bet there’s a few of the perhaps more seedy characters that relate to some people he’s met in his life.

Jimmy O’Brien is a defense attorney to the dregs of the criminal world, the novels immerse the reader in the politics, society, and industry of Los Angeles in the 1970s, all the while maintaining a style more reminiscent of 1940s who-dunnit narratives than anything else. They’re classy, surprising, and endearing – in a murder mystery kind of way.

From his first two books “The Brimstone Murders” and “Guilty or Else”, Jeff has built up a following in the mystery world, his books clever, gripping, and addictive filled with multiple layers of suspense that keep the reader wanting more. His latest novel and many say his best so far “Detour to Murder”, is linked to the film noir icon, Detour.
