A Book and a Chat with Bruce A Sarte

Musician and author Bruce A Sarte makes a welcome return to “A Book and a Chat” today. Previously Bruce was on talking about his vampire thriller “Sands of Time”, and paranormal murder mystery series “Towering Pines Volume One: Room 509”. Now he is back with a new string to his bow, one that looks like it’s going bring him even more success, judging by the reviews so far.

A Book and a Chat with C.Y. Bourgeois

C.Y Bourgeois (Carla) has always been an avid reader, but it was not until the death of her father that she decided to put pen to paper, or rather fingers to keyboard to produce a book. Originally she was going to write something dedicated to her father, but struggling with exactly what to create she instead produced her debut mystery thriller “Visions of You”.

As we heard through the show it did not end up quite as she set out writing the novel, as the main character changed during the writing to become “Shelby Leight is a wise-cracking, lighthearted teenager, looking forward to a fun-filled senior year in high school”. Using her own own knowledge of Alaska and the town of Palmer, Carla has created a debut novel that as one reviewer put it…

“This book was a wonderful read! You can picture the town and characters and feel like you are there without the story getting bogged down with too much detail. It is a quick read because the end of each chapter leaves you with something that makes you want to keep going and find out what will happen next. The writing style well-suited to young adult and adult readers. This is an excellent freshman effort and I am happy to hear that the sequel is already in the works!”

This book gives realistic details of the town and makes you feel like you can see it. Just reading the details of the story made me want to read it right away. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down! Bourgeois did a great job of drawing the reader in and making you want to keep reading until the end. I can't wait for the sequel!

Well reviewer, her follow up novel “Visions of Mortality” is already underway, and as mentioned at the start of the blog, the book dedicated to her father that started Carla down the writing path, that also has now been produced in her story “The Concrete Nome”.

A Book and a Chat with Charles Rosenberg

The name Charles Rosenberg might well not mean anything to you, but you might well have seen some of his work on television. “Death on a High Floor” is his first novel, but you might well have heard himon TV and radio.

Charles is not a stranger to crime, nor for that fact drama. He was half of the “on-air” legal analysts for E! Entertainment Television's live coverage of the O.J. Simpson trial, he also provided commentary for E!'s coverage of the Simpson civil trial. This after writing a book “The Trial of O.J. Simpson: How to Watch the Trial and Understand What’s Really Going On”.

Also he has been the credited legal script consultant to the popular prime time television shows Boston Legal, L.A. Law, The Practice and Showtime Channel's The Paper Chase.

With all this plus his own background of practicing and teaching about law both in the US and Europe, it’s not surprising that his debut book “Death on a High Floor” is a classic legal thriller.

As we learned during the show, Charles did start writing a novel but that never was completed (up to now anyway) though one of the characters from that first draft does appear in “Death on a High Floor”

About Death on a High Floor:

On the surface, Death on a High Floor is a classic legal thriller, complete with tense courtroom scenes. As the novel opens, Simon Rafer, the managing partner of Marbury Marfan, a glitzy, L.A.-based international law firm of more than a thousand lawyers, lies dead in the firm's swank 85th floor reception area. An ornate Swiss dagger protrudes from his back.


Simon, it turns out, had recently paid $500,000 for the ancient world's most infamous coin, the EID MAR denarius, minted by Brutus to commemorate his assassination of Julius Caesar. On the back of the coin appear double daggers, the helmet of liberty and the Latin words EID MAR (Ides of March). The police quickly conclude that Simon was killed in a dispute with the seller over the authenticity of the coin. The question, "Real or fake?" echoes through the novel.

Robert Tarza is a sixty-something senior partner at Marbury Marfan. He had recently sold the coin to Simon and is instantly suspected of being the killer. Robert is proper, self-contained and sardonic but has lived his entire professional life, literally and metaphorically, on the "high floors." He is utterly unprepared to deal with being accused of murder, let alone prepared to deal with the police, the ravenous media, and the generally unsupportive reactions of those he had thought of as his close friends. The title of the book, Death on a High Floor, is thus simultaneously a description of both the physical place where Simon Rafer was murdered and the metaphorical place where Robert's psychological death spiral begins, as he falls from highly respected attorney to common criminal. On a deeper level, Robert's fall from grace is what the novel is really about, and I hope reader's will take from it not only a better understanding of how criminal procedure really works, but an appreciation for what it is like, emotionally, to be falsely accused.

While a second separate book is already underway, there is also a promise of a follow up the “Death on a High Floor".

Death on a High Floor" is a great book. The suspense starts on page 1 and continues until the very end. Once I began reading it, I could not put it down. I finished it in two days only because I had to go to work. Otherwise, I probably would have read it all in one sitting. I'm looking forward to Rosenberg's next book!

A Book and a Chat with Christopher Stookey

Doctors and lawyers seem to be the guests on many shows over the last few months, I’m wondering if it’s that with the use of the computer would be readers/publishers do not have to try and translate doctors writing?

Anyway, my guest on today’s A Book and a Chat” is another doctor who has now gone into print. That is Christopher Stookey, whose debut medical/mystery/thriller is called “Terminal Care”.

Medical malpractice is something we all have to pay for, normally with the increase in medical insurance bills. Just imagine if you were a doctor and saw something going on that you did not think was right how you would feel.

During the show Chris shared with us his how his own introduction to the medical profession was being part of a lawsuit, as well as perhaps some of the items that he has seen fist hand in his day to day work as an emergency physician have influenced his debut novel. After all they say “write about what you know.”

About Terminal Care:

“Terminal Care” is set in San Francisco, and explores the unsavory world of big-business pharmaceuticals as well as the sad and tragic world of the Alzheimer’s ward at a medical research hospital. It is part medical procedural, part thriller, and part mystery and all three are expertly woven together to create a fast paced medical thriller.

The show included many side of this new author as well and an insight into his next novel.

A Book and a Chat with Dean M. DeLuke

My guest on today’s”A Book and a Chat” is Dr Dean M DeLuke. I guess now that people can type up their novels on a computer, it does not matter that people always had trouble reading doctors writing, and perhaps that’s why there seem to be more and more doctors, turning their hands to writing.

In the case Dean, it is not just his medical background that he’s been able to use in the production of his mystery/thriller novel “SHEDROW” but also his love for thoroughbred racing, that goes back to his youth.

Think “Dick Francis meets Robin Cook” and you’ll have a rough idea of this splendid debut novel. It is a story and adventure that straight from the off, gallops along taking the reader through many twists and turns on a page turning adventure. “Shedrow” is not just for horse lovers and thoroughbred race enthusiasts, to whom the word “Shedrow” is instantly recognized as a row of barns at a race track. It is a book for all ages and sexes, the book is a terrific whodunit, with characters that lead you from one chapter to another making you want to know more about them.

As Dean shared with us during the show, the book and the publication has been helped by other medical authors, and I’m sure the name Dean M DeLuke will soon be spoken about with other famous doctor authors.

A Book and a Chat with AJ Scudiere

My guest on today’s "A Book and a Chat" is Suspense/Thriller author AJ Scudiere. So far she has two novels printed with a third underway.

AJ it could be said, looks at the world in a slightly different way to others, patterns pop out at her, she loves the textures and the texture of simple items such as the keys on her keyboard and how the curvature feels to her touch.

To this end as AJ shared with us during an interesting thirty minute show, it was not wonder that the characters that had been filling her head eventually came to fruition in her first novel “ Resonance”.

RESONANCE:

The last time the earth's magnetic poles switched places, the dinosaurs died.
Now, frogs are mutating, dolphins are beaching themselves, and birds are migrating out of season. Worse, people are dying from a strange new disease. The problems all have one chilling similarity. They are all occurring in a "hotspot" - a pocket of reversed polarity that tells us . . . THE SHIFT IS ALREADY HERE.

This book also has become available in an Audi Movie format, as well as AJ told us in a game version that can be played alongside the reading of the book.
This was followed by her second novel “Vengeance”.

A Book and a Chat with Sam Hilliard

One of the things about my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” was that he was baptized on five different occasions—once in the back of a speeding Dodge Satellite—before reaching the age of six months. The family it seems had taken matters into their own hands had worried his father’s procrastination and daredevil driving would prevent the ceremony from ever happening.

Perhaps because of this my chat with today’s guest “Sam Hilliard” started with a phone call that sounded like it was coming from underwater, I did wonder if it was yet another baptism.

However eventually we got sorted and went on to discuss both Sam, and his book “The Last Track” which is the first but by no means the last of the “Mike Brody” series.

So who is “Mike Brody”?

Mike Brody is the man you want, when the one you love is missing. He’s able to tap into the memories and emotional charges left behind by the missing in their tracks and visualize the events that led to their disappearance. The series will follow the adventures of Mike, his ex-wife Jessica and a cast of recurring characters, as he moves from case to case, searching for that mission that will finally heal his childhood wounds.

In this first book The Last Track, Mike is pulled in by the police to help find an asthmatic boy lost in the dense woods surrounding a dude ranch in Montana. An unwitting murder witness, the boy burrows ever deeper into the rugged terrain, fearful of being found. As Mike and a local officer search for the boy, the killer follows them.
While the investigation expands, Mike’s ex-wife, a well-connected journalist, uses her contacts to unravel the truth behind the murder. Her discoveries threaten to snare them all in a treacherous conspiracy.
During the show Sam discussed his journey to publication as well as his plans for possibly another seven books in the series.
