A Book and a Chat with Chad Schimke

My guest on today's 599th "A Book and a Chat" is Chad Schimke the author of "Picker"," Pieces", "Walker" and "Weirder", also Enter Uno, the first in the We are Wildewood series which includes digital art by Solis (heartofsolis.com).

Chad spent a lot of his early years growing up in Northwestern New Mexico and you mix that experience with his current location of San Francisco and you have two vibrant locations that can only enhance ones experiences and provide color for Chad’s work.

Chad pens character driven books that while being paranormal are also filled with a mix of crime, macabre, fantasy and sci-fi there’ even a little romance, all set in iconic settings.

“PICKER” was Chad’s first novel which met much success and reviews such as…

Chad Schimke is a new writer for me ... (he) has the ability to pull us in and we become, in a sense, characters in the story. We find ourselves in the criminal underworld and sit on the edge of our chairs as things are sorted out.

His follow up book "PEICES" received equally glowing reviews such as…

Chad Schimke's book 'Pieces' is a masterpiece of intrigue, suspense and magical spells...and walks you right into the everyday paranormal - and he shows how silently ubiquitous it can be at every turn. Based in the city I am from, San Francisco, reading this book took me back to this city rich in stories and history. The author knows San Francisco inside and out and so, combined with such well-developed characters, complete with a witch and much more, made for such compelling reading.. that I couldn't put this book down.”

With a new book “SECRETS"  a thriller with elements of crime, horror, paranormal and romance soon to be available Chad I’m sure will continue to grow both his audience and his following

A Book and a Chat with Halli Lilburn

Like many other authors today’s guest Halli Lilburn has always dabbled in writing poetry and short stories, perhaps as she says it was her own therapy for those teenage years. She carried on this love for writing in her later life having many article and short stories published before finally creating her debut YA sci-fi adventure novel "Shifters".

The idea for the book came to Halli one night in a dream, never really thinking herself however to be a Sci-Fi writer it was a surprise to her when the idea for “Shifters” came to her.

About “Shifters”: (taken from Leigh Covington blog)

The book is YA speculative fiction about a girl, Lina and her friends who stumble upon a government conspiracy taking place right in their school. The corrupt branch is called the Special Force and their purpose is to weed out students who they deem have corrupt DNA to create a superior race.

Students get expelled and go missing. Even more shocking, Lina finds out the Special Force is sending these teens to another reality. Lina steals the power to shift into new realities and uses this power to escape the Special Force and attempt to rescue her friends. It’s very plot driven, like a video game.

The book made it high up the list at Amazon and received reviews like…

I found this YA novel engrossing and immensely invigorating. There's no wasted wordage, no dropped plot threads, just moment-to-moment excitement and adventure, with the romance, friendship, character integrity, and villainous "overlords" woven in intricately. Just as importantly, the story line is so very plausible: almost any contemporary society today is aware of how close it could come to a fascist "Big Brother" type society, without even realizing until too late.

The characters in this book are at first selectively chosen students of a new University, selected presumably for their higher capabilities. Yet they don't understand, amid all the rigid rules and strictures that their value is in their DNA. It is not until one of her former neighborhood playmates, a boy she has known for years, disappears from the University that Lina realizes something terrible is afoot, and she, Yussef, and Jan begin to explore what it is-and discover the concept of "Shifters"-those who can pass among alternate dimensions.

With the second book in the now trilogy already underway, I can see the main shifting Halli will do is towards the top of the Amazon selling list.

A Book and a Chat with Lee Tidball

Lee Tidball is an award winning screenplay writer some of which have now been produced as novelts, but his original calling was as a teacher.
He became a full time writer after many years as a middle-grades teacher where he was able to share with his pupils the first jottings of his now launched books.

His novels fascinate and entertain both his middle-grade/young adult/family audience as well as Hollywood agents and producers. These include his graphic novel series "Princess Reborn," based on his screenplay of the same name, his television pilot/series concept "Midnight Princess," based on his novel "Hidden Talents; Ginah's Journal #2" (a prequel to "Princess Reborn"), his Christmas fantasy screenplay "Sandi Claus", and his historical young-adult fantasy novel "Windfork Secrets."

Finding the market for his screen plays somewhat a closed shop he is now producing them as graphic novels as with “Princess Reborn”, which received an Honorable Mention in the Writers' Digest 15th Annual International Self-Published Book Awards, Middle-grade/Young Adult category (2007).

About Princess Reborn: (taken from Amazon)

Lari's puzzled. What's Mom's secret? And could it have anything to do with Lari's, secret? Lari's family will never be the same again when an unspeakable evil is unleashed on the world. A dark nemesis from mom's phantom past, bent on ruling and revenge. The world will stand helpless against it. The time for Heroes has come again. One must be born, though she has no idea who she is. And the other must, against all odds, be REBORN.

With a publisher now picking up and re-launching some of his earlier work and more from the Princess Reborn series we will find the name Lee Tidball not only on the books shelves but hopefully soon on the screen as well.

A Book and a Chat with Marla Martenson

On today's "A Book and a Chat" it is a another welcome return to the show for a previous guest, this time in the form if matchmaker and I would add humorist Marla Martenson.  If you’re looking a read that will make you think as well provide a good laugh then her books are for you.

As we discovered on her previous visit from her early days when she wanted to be anything from a singer to a TV presenter, Marla had stardust in her eyes, which eventually lead her to Hollywood where her acting career included television commercials and print modeling, as well of course as the required stint waiting on tables.

Using this experience she has previously written  her previous books. Her first book “Excuse Me, Your Soul Mate Is Waiting” in which she combined her talent and wisdom with sure-fire techniques of the Law of Attraction to help you bring that special love into your life. This was closley followed by her second book “Good Date, Bad Date” a guide for single women who are tired of trying to figure out the secrets to successful dating. In her book “Diary of a Beverly Hills Matchmaker” Marla takes her readers for a hilarious romp through her days in an exclusive L.A. matchmaking agency and her daily struggles to keep her self-esteem from imploding in a town where looks are everything and money talks.

This last book has now been followed by "Hearts on the Line" in which Marla continues her won story of sinking to some very low times when, as she shares... "if the 99 Cent Store didn’t carry it, she didn't buy it."

From these profound reflections of her life and struggles Marla weaves in  enough  himour to have the reader laughing out loud.

About "Hearts on the Line" (Taken from Amazon)

Marla in her second installment, is still firing Cupid darts at work, a plush dating service she calls the “Double D”—which doesn’t stand for dream date. She and her husband Adolfo work hard to achieve their goal of leaving their small apartment behind and buying a home, but with a boss who requires Marla to cross ethical lines, a tiny spark is all it takes, and Marla goes from being vice-president of a multi-city enterprise to unemployment. Adolfo’s passion switches to anger and then resentment, Marla’s celebrity hob-knobbing, shopping in boutiques, and pricey Botox habit all skid to a dead stop.

Bills pile up. Determined, Marla turns to Craig’s list, connecting with a series of flaky employers, and if the 99 Cent Store doesn’t carry it, she doesn’t buy it. Broke and depressed, however, she rarely finds time to write. When a former client calls and asks if she’d work with him as a matchmaker privately, she shifts into a whole new level. Amazing things start happening. Not only does she help people find soul mates instead of trophies and sugar-daddies, she finds the emotional space to heal personal traumas in the past, ranging from the bullying she endured in her youth, a near rape, a disastrous previous marriage, and her father’s death—an unusual experience involving the ocean’s kiss. Marla writes as never before.

Adolfo is proud of her, but Marla still holds grudges as they search for a new home. She decides to rekindle the flame in her marriage and thinks she knows just the person to help: Chantal, a former client who owns a spa specializing in Brazilian hot waxes. This proves to be a hilarious blend of torture, comedy, and high hopes—a bit like life itself. Along with her clients, Marla’s heart is on the line as she discovers the powerful ways in which dreams are real.

So listen and enjoy about this fabulous author, on today's "A Book and a Chat with Marla Martenson""

A Book and a Chat with Harriet Rossetto

Harriet Rossetto is the author of the fascinating memoir/autobiography "Sacred Housekeeping – A Spiritual Memoir”. The book tells of Harriet’s life which had its own devils and lack of direction was , by a chance answering of an “ad” put on the path that would not only lead to the saving and redemption of many Jewish people, but also help her face and conquer her own issues.

Trained as a social worker with a strong Jewish identity, Harriet answered a classified ad in the Los Angeles times which for her would change her life forever. The ad read… “Looking for a person of a Jewish background to help incarcerated Jewish offenders."

Soon realizing that most of the Jew in jail had committed their crimes owing to “addiction” or as Harriet puts it “the dis-ease" of addiction”.
Frustrated by the lack of resources, she embraced the unpopular cause, fighting the widespread denial that "nice Jewish men and women" could be addicts and criminals in need of rehabilitation. A woman of passion, vision, and action, this fight took on the form of “Beit T'Shuvah: The House of Return.”
During the next 25 years not only has this lead to the saving of many people of the Jewish faith but also lead to Harriet’s marriage to the now “Rabbi Mark Borovitz”.
As one reviewer said of the book…
Ms. Rossetto has once again accomplished the impossible: written a profoundly naked autobiography of searing truth and honesty which is simultaneously on every page also a very clear no-punches-pulled road-map as to how to lead a life worth living.
About Sacred Housekeeping - A Spiritual Memoir (taken from Harriets web site)
An honest autobiography of a courageous woman and social worker, who took an interest in the unpopular cause of helping incarcerated Jewish men re-enter society and made it her life's passion. From that passion was born Beit T'Shuvah, a once tiny halfway house that has grown exponentially into a renowned treatment organization.

Her voyage is remarkable and an inspiration to all people. This is the personal story of the obstacles she surmounted and the successes she encountered. This book also tells the unconventional love story of Harriet Rossetto and her husband, Rabbi Mark Borovitz.

Pamela Fagan Hutchins is my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” not only a multi award winning author but lists herself as… “writer, mediocre endurance athlete (triathlon, marathons), wife, mom of an ADHD & Asperger’s son, five kids/step-kids, business owner, recovering employment attorney and human resources executive, investigator, consultant, and musician”… wares me out just saying all of the things she does.

Always a reader and would be writer she first embarked writing about things she know in the nonfiction field, these book included  top Ghost Story in 2012 from the Houston Writers Guild. During this time and using her own knowledge of the location and even knowledge of  the local ghost, she finally started writing her fiction series “Katie and Annalise”, the first and now award winning novel of the series being “Saving Grace”.

About “Saving Grace”: (taken from Dark Phantom Blog)

If you’re at all inclined to be swept away to the islands to fall in love with a rainforest jumbie house and a Texas attorney who is as much a danger to herself as the island bad guys, then dive headfirst with Katie Connell into Saving Grace.

A Book and a Chat with Justina Ireland

Yesterdays show was one of my one hour specials, as I welcomed another of the Class of 2K13 debut YA authors in the form of Justina Ireland.

Justina though doing the normal school writing did not really think about creating her first novel until recently. Far from following her love for historical events she created a YA novel more about dangerous girls than dangerous times. her debut book being called "Vengeance Bound".

Justina says about the book

“Vengeance Bound is really the product of two things: my time spent in the Army and being a light-skinned black girl and the expectations attached to both of those situations.”

Starting out she had her main character as a light-skinned black girl Justina found it a struggle to create the story, she then, as we learned during the show, changed her to the stereotypical dumb blonde and the story just flowed.

About “Vengeance Bound”: (taken Dark Faerie Tales blog)

Cory Graff is not alone in her head. Bound to a deal of desperation made when she was a child, Cory’s mind houses the Furies—the hawk and the serpent—lingering always, waiting for her to satisfy their bloodlust. After escaping the asylum where she was trapped for years, Cory knows how to keep the Furies quiet. By day, she lives a normal life, but by night, she tracks down targets the Furies send her way. And she brings down Justice upon them.

Cory’s perfected her system of survival, but when she meets a mysterious boy named Niko at her new school, she can’t figure out how she feels about him. For the first time, the Furies are quiet in her head around a guy. But does this mean that Cory’s finally found someone who she can trust, or are there greater factors at work? As Cory’s mind becomes a battlefield, with the Furies fighting for control, Cory will have to put everything on the line to hold on to what she’s worked so hard to build.

The book is due to be launched in April and Justina already has a second book possibly being called “Promise of Shadows” scheduled for March next year.

A Book and a Chat with Mara Jacobs

Sometimes when you do a show you get a premonition about how it’s going to be, today’s was one such event. Before the show started I warned my guest about possible issues with the hosting and that if I disappeared to carry on chatting by herself. I do not know why I mentioned this it’s not something I normally do. But it was a good thing I did, about six minutes before the end of what was turning out to be a great show, I lost all power and could not get back into the show until a minute before the end, my guest though like a true trooper carried on sharing information about herself and her books… thank goodness.

My guest is Mara Jacobs whom I came across while doing my “next big thing” blog crawl a few weeks back.

Mara came late to the writing life, not being one of those who had wanted to be a writer since they could first hold a crayon. However since she has made that choice the books have simply rolled from her fingertips.
Be it thriller novel or an historical novel there is romance never far away from the creative writings Mara produces. Already with different series of novels, the following this author can be seen by the huge number of reviews on Amazon.

The series that Mara has written include the “Anna Dawson Vegas” series.

“Anna Dawson is a professional poker player. And she's good. Very good. ..
She's also a compulsive sports gambler. Not so good.”

Also Blackbird and Confessor Series:

A compelling story of obsession and intrigue. Blackbird is forced to live in seclusion but the reader gets the impression she likes it there just fine--until she has to leave the nest. Her isolation is tangible. The twists and turns in this book were quite surprising.

Both series as we learned during the show having interesting backgrounds stories.

Perhaps though Mara’s most popular series is her “Worth” series a contemporary romance series featuring three life-long girlfriends who are now in their mid-thirties. Subtitles are The Nice One, The Pretty One, and The Smart One. Each woman was pegged with their title in school and in some ways it has shaped the women they’ve become —and yet they’re so much more.

Currently a trilogy, though there will soon be a fourth novel, the series consists of “Worth the Weight”, “Worth the Drive” and “Worth The Fall”.

As one of the many reviews for “Worth the Weight” states..

“Just finished reading this great romance book! Ms Jacobs does an awesome job of telling a great story and addressing some of the issues vulnerable women - and men - face in today's world. Her ability to touch on the emotional sides of relationship issues while still keeping the humor in the telling makes for an easy to read "can't put down" book. I can't wait to read the other two books in the series!

Well the series is now out in a three book box set so readers can follow each of the woman’s stories.
With several more books in each of Mara’s series already underway the name of Mara Jacobs will be on all romance lovers must have lists.

A Book and a Chat with Millie Grenough

My guest on today's "A Book and a Chat" is fellow Connecticut author "Millie Grenough". A Much traveled, her life changed from being a nun to a night club singer, sort of "Sister Act" in reverse.

After spending time in Latin America as a key member of an international development team, Millie got tired of not being able to converse with the Spanish speaking people that she met. On her return to Europe she created an innovative approach to learning languages for doctors and medical students. Her trademark "Sing it! Learn English Through Song “has lead to six books heeling people throughout the world learn English as a second language.

After a cycling accident she started thinking about her own life and how she could distress her life, this lead to her developing her "OASIS in the Overwhelm: 60-second strategies for balance in a busy world" program which is now out in a book  to help people in their lives.

About "OASIS in the Overwhelm: 60-second strategies for balance in a busy world" (taken from Amazon)

OASIS in the Overwhelm introduces four specific strategies that are practical, easy to learn, take only sixty seconds, and designed to help busy people be more effective and happier at work and at home. Executive Coach and Clinical Instructor at the Yale School of Medicine Millie Grenough developed the strategies after her own near-death accident. OASIS tells her story, stories of her clients, and offers the latest results of scientific research that demonstrate the power to re-wire our brains towards greater health and happiness.

As one reviewer put it...

"I must confess some bias. I have taken Ms. Grenough's course in stress management and have found it incredibly helpful even two years after the fact. I purchased the book as a refresher and was extremely pleased at how doable the refreshing was. Take "must figure out how to get a grip" off your to do list. Purchase Oasis in the Overwhelm and find a new lease on life. The book is short, practical and to the point. I highly recommend it. "

After listening to Millie during the show I too would highly recommend her book.

A Book and a Chat with Chuck Barrett

Chuck Barrett is my guest on today's "A Book and a Chat" an author I first came across during my show following "The Next Big Thing" blogs. During that show I came across his blog about his then  next book "Breach of Power" a book that comes out later this month and was fascinated about the subject and the success of his previous books.

Little did I know when I invited Chuck to be a guest on the show how it would flow with the previous show and the thriller writers such as Jon Land and Gary Grossman who have been gusts in the last few weeks.
Chuck comes from a background of air traffic control with a history of being a commercial pilot and flight instructor, where the only writing might be down to drafting labor agreements.

Like many though he knew he had a story inside of him, so using his own experiences and over a period of twelve years he produced his debut and now award winning novel "The Savannah Project " which also introduced the readers to Jake Pendleton.

The book became an award-winning novel, winning awards in ForeWord Reviews Book of the Year Award, International Book Awards, and Reader View's Reviewer's Choice Award and received such reviews as...
The Savannah Project signals the arrival of a new member to the thriller genre. "Chuck Barrett". The tale contains all of the danger, treachery, and action a reader could wish for. The intrigue comes from all directions, slicing and stitching with precision.

This success was followed by "The Toymaker" which as we learned from the show was inspired by a chance meeting while on holiday.

Now comes Chuck new book "Breach of Power".

About "Breach of Power" (taken from Chucks web site)

A hiker finds a journal deep inside a glacier that was lost during World War II. On its frozen pages are etched the secret locations of treasures lost since the 1940s. But something more ominous is scribed in the journal, something that threatens the Presidency of the United States.

Jake Pendleton is summoned to the White House and instructed to locate and acquire the book. He soon realizes there are others on a quest to find it as well.

Others who will kill to get to it first...

As the reviewer of his first book noted...

...signals the arrival of a new member to the thriller genre. "Chuck Barrett".

This third book just cements Chuck as a writer that all thriller lovers will enjoy.
