A Book and a Chat with Laura V Hilton

Today is the last “A Book and a Chat” for 2103 a year that for me has not been one o f the better 365 days, however along the way I’ve had some great guests on the show and for this final of 2013 I have another one in the form of romance writer Laura V Hilton.

Always a writer from a  very early age it was not until 2004 that she got her first book published in the form of the romance novel “Hot Chocolate”, this was followed by “Shadows of the Past”.

These early novel s were the stepping stones to the trilogies that have firmly put the name of Laura V Hilton on the romance writer map.
The first trilogy “The Amish of Seymour” which consists of “Patchwork Dreams”, “A Harvest of hearts” and “Promised to Another” made her a best seller, with many, many glowing reviews for her books. From this success a second trilogy “Amish of Webster County” was produced consisting of “Healing Love”, “Surrendered Love” and the just released “Awakened Love”.

About “Awakened Love”: (taken from Amazon)

A Bashful Baker--Twenty-one-year-old Katie Detweiler loves to bake. When she's hired at a local bed-and-breakfast to do just that, she's excited, especially because the owner promises the shy young woman that she won't have to leave the kitchen. But when her boss's husband requires round-the-clock care, Katie is forced to overcome her shyness and wait on customers, as well. Before long, a "customer" reveals himself to be a private investigator who informs Katie that she was adopted, and that her biological sister needs a bone marrow transplant.

A Man on the Run--Twenty-two-year-old Abram Hilty has fled the drama of Shipshewana, Indiana, for Seymour, Missouri, where he's staying with his cousin Micah Graber. His plan is to hide, from a girl he no longer cares about; and also from a cold-blooded killer. Uncomfortable sharing his past and afraid of the consequences, he buries his troubles deep inside. When he meets Katie Detweiler, he is immediately attracted, but his pursuit of her is complicated by the problems of his past. An Adventure Unfolds--As Katie wrestles with questions of identity, she also struggles to navigate her blossoming romance with Abram, in the face of opposition from a jealous friend. As their relationship becomes more serious, Abram can no longer conceal the truth about his past.

But parts of that past rear their heads, barring the way for a marriage between them; at least for now. Through dangers and near-death experiences, Katie and Abram must find their way back to each other. But only the power of forgiveness can bring them together for good.

With a fresh trilogy “The Amish of Jamesport” due out next year along with a non Amish novel  “The Appalachian Ballad Quilt”, the writings of  Laura V Hilton will continue to be read and enjoyed by an ever increasing audience.

A Book and a Chat with Allan Topol

International best selling thriller writer Allan Topol is my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” chatting about his latest his Craig Page thriller The Russian Endgame, the third and final book in trilogy that includes “The Spanish Revenge” and “The China Gambit”. Allan is one of the best thriller writers of today and his books are always a must read.

A lawyer of some not, Allan has used his legal and military knowledge along with locations he has visited in his much traveled life to produce a stream of books that have readers eagerly awaiting his next page turning thriller.

Currently, plans are in the works to make three of the earlier novels “SPY DANCE”, “A WOMAN OF VALOR”, and “DARK AMBITION” to be made into movies. As we learned a screenwriter has already been hired by a producer to write a screenplay for SPY DANCE, and it is nearing completion.

His latest book “The Russian Endgame” is the thrilling closure of the Craig Page trilogy that included “The China Gambit” and “The Spanish Revenge”.

About “The Russian Endgame”: (taken from Amazon)

When former KGB agent Dimitri Orlov orchestrates an alliance between two world powers bent on domination, he unleashes a powerful chain of events that will rock the Western World. The agenda? Eliminate the President of the United States and seize classified military weaponry capable of shifting the balance of world power. But before this nefarious scheme can reach fruition, Craig Page is on the scene, joined by companion Elizabeth Crowder, ready to confront a painful past and the enemies that helped create it. But can the indomitable Director of Counterterrorism emerge victorious?

Finding himself facing an old enemy unexpectedly catapulted into a lethal position of power, Craig is pushed to the limit in an effort to foil his enemy's deadly plans and keep potentially devastating military technology out of the hands of those prepared to destroy the world as he knows it. Filled with thrills, twists, and danger, The Russian Endgame showcases best-selling author Allan Topol's talent for delivering electrifying, gripping expeditions into the world of international intrigue.

As Allan shared with us, the end of this trilogy is not the end of Craig Page he will be returning early next year in book “The Argentine Triangle” one I am sure will be another smash hit for this talented thriller writer.

A Book and a Chat with Jodi Foster

When I have a show and the guest does not turn up, I normally try to chat about them and their book not only so people get a little information about them, but also in case they have been delayed and might join the show all be it late.

Today was one of those shows, as after a few minutes my guest Jodi Foster was able to join me for yet another interesting and entertaining, “A Book and a Chat” actually it was show 699 with the 700th show being this Saturday at 11:00AM ET.

Jodi is an intuitive empath, author and Tv personality, her story having appeared on SyFy’s Paranormal Witness in a story called “The Apartment”. Now it is available for all to share in her debut book “Forgotten Burial: A Cry for Justice from Beyond the Grave”. In which Jodi tells the true paranormal story unraveling the mystery behind the unsolved case of a missing young woman, Madeline Isabella Johnson.

About “Forgotten Burial” :

Old enough to be fading from local memory, the news of a kidnapping, torture, and sex-slavery story, dubbed The Girl in the Box, grabbed national headlines during much of 1984. Red Bluff couple Cameron and Janice Hooker held a young girl, Colleen Stan, captive in their home for seven years. Author Jodi Foster had never heard of the case when she moved to Chico in 1999. But that was before she met Marliz, before she found herself in the unknown darker underbelly of this already dark public story. Overlooked by the papers, Marliz’ story was a shocker. She had been the Hooker’s first victim, seven years earlier.

Shortly after moving into her apartment, Foster began to feel the presence of an unknown entity. Her young daughter had seen an angel following her mother around from room to room. Foster is soon plagued with haunting nightmares of abduction, murder, and a secret burial. Doors open and slam shut on their own. Appliances turn on and off, and a Sing 'N Snore Ernie doll wakes at 3:37 every morning to taunt her. Marliz had finally found someone who might hear her story and tell it to the world.

A story of inhumanity and stolen innocence is not easy to tell, nor to hear. In Foster, Marliz has chosen a worthy messenger. The story is both extremely disturbing and, ultimately, uplifting, as we follow th
e author’s journey through terror to understanding and right action.

Jodi’s story is reality-bending adventure as she works with police to bring justice to this disturbing, yet ultimately uplifting story.

A Book and a Chat with Karen Klassen

My guest Karen Klassen once lived a life that many can relate to trapped in a world where every day was the same, a life that consisted of a steady downward spiral. Suppressing her true feelings and living a toxic lifestyle her physical body suffered and I manifested chronic back pain, IBS, addictions, TMJ, allergies, anorexia, depression, and scoliosis. Looking for a way out she married a man she thought was her knight in shining army only to find he was emotionally abusive leaving Karen to cry herself to sleep every wondering if there was another better life.

Then all that changed, she managed to find enough courage to get a divorce before in her late twenties she experienced a profound spiritual awakening which changed the course of her life forever. Karen embarked on a journey beyond the familiar as she delved into a spiritual practice of meditation, self reflection and a divine love she’d never known before. Instead of seeking love outside of herself she began to explore and transform her inner worlds and it was here she discovered her brilliance, a brilliance that lies within every woman.

In 2010 Karen launched Women Embracing Brilliance which brought brilliant women together to celebrate themselves, each other and their incredible journey.

Now Karen shares the experience in her book “The Freedom Frequency” which has been described as “one of the best-written self-help books” by a reviewer who has read many such books over the years.

About “The Freedom Frequency”: (taken from Amazon)

Did you know that your personal and spiritual growth contributes to the evolution of humanity? Do you feel you are being called to be more and live more purposefully? You have two choices in how you live your life. You can live below the line in the realm of fear where worry, stress, doubt, and the many negative states of mind can sabotage your relationships and dreams. Or you can live your life above the line in the vibrations of joy, fulfillment, love, and soul-inspired purpose. The choice is yours.

This book shows you a powerful and evolutionary way to view your mind, emotions, relationships and your life. I will show you how to release your fear-based mind and transform those inner voices that tell you, you’re not good enough, smart enough or unworthy of love and abundance. By embracing your Divine Mind, the Universal Intelligence inside of you, you raise your vibration and reclaim your power as a Divine Human Being. If you are ready to live a heart-centered life free of drama and stress, then The Freedom Frequency is a book you will want to read.

A Book and a Chat with Kristina McMorris

Talented author Kristina McMorris how she had been host of weekly TV shows since age nine, including an Emmy® Award-winning program.  While interviewing her grandmother for a cookery book she learned of her grandparent’s war time romance, this was the basis for her best selling multi award winning debut novel “Letters From Home”.

An account of a family friend - one who had fought for America and his brother for Japan which while researching lad her to brief mention of approximately two hundred non-Japanese spouses who had chosen to live voluntarily in the U.S. internment camps. Stunned and fascinated by the discovery, she instantly knew it was a story that needed to be told.  The result was another smash hit for Kristina with her novel “Bridge of Scarlet Leaves.”

Now Kristina is back on the show with what promises from the already rave reviews such as “Gripped me from the first page and didn't let go."  to be another “must read” this talented author, in the form of her latest novel “The Pieces We Keep”.

About “The Pieces That we Keep”:  (Taken from http://www.lybrary.com)

In this richly emotional novel, Kristina McMorris evokes the depth of a mother's bond with her child, and the power of personal histories to echo through generations...

Two years have done little to ease veterinarian Audra Hughes's grief over her husband's untimely death. Eager for a fresh start, Audra plans to leave Portland for a new job in Philadelphia. Her seven-year-old son, Jack, seems apprehensive about flying-but it's just the beginning of an anxiety that grows to consume him.

As Jack's fears continue to surface in recurring and violent nightmares, Audra hardly recognizes the introverted boy he has become. Desperate, she traces snippets of information unearthed in Jack's dreams, leading her to Sean Malloy, a struggling US Army veteran wounded in Afghanistan. Together they unravel a mystery dating back to World War II, and uncover old family secrets that still have the strength to wound-and perhaps, at last, to heal.

Intricate and beautifully written, The Pieces We Keep illuminates those moments when life asks us to reach beyond what we know and embrace what was once unthinkable. Deftly weaving together past and present, herein lies a story that is at once poignant and thought-provoking, and as unpredictable as the human heart.

Kristina McMorris always brings to the show not only her sparkling personality, but a fresh novel that to me is always a “must read”.

A Book and a Chat with Arnine Cumsky Weiss

If my guest had followed her childhood dream I could have been chatting to an interior designer on today’s show, instead Arnine Cumsky Weiss followed a career as a nationally certified sign language interpreter and a teacher of English as a second language. She has worked in the field of Deafness for over thirty years including signing at events from presidential speeches to a Broadway play, even at the childbirth of ten babies.

Along the way she has written six books, the first of which Becoming a Bar Mitzvah: A Treasury of Stories, was inspired by her oldest son surviving cancer. Arnine’s first novel “The Undefeated” was rolling around in her head for 20 years before she wrote it, using her own knowledge and experience. “The Undefeated” is a coming-of-age story of two young men set in northeastern Pennsylvania during the turbulent times of the civil rights movement. The book focuses on friendship and loyalty as each young man finds himself faced with adversity.

Now she has launched a new book “She Ain’t Heavy” which Arnine describes thus…

“In the aftermath of 9/11, I was fascinated with the stories of the people who were supposed to be in the towers that morning and were not. I wondered if they realized they were given a second chance and what they did with it. Although I changed the setting from New York to Philadelphia, I kept the theme of She Ain’t Heavy about getting a second chance.”

About “She Ain’t Heavy” :

Just when counter clerk Teddy Warner is about to be evicted from her Scranton apartment, she bumps into beautiful, brilliant, blond Rachel – her estranged childhood friend whose mother forbid their friendship thinking Teddy was beneath them.

Teddy and Rachel reconnect over hot chocolate and under New Year’s Eve fireworks.  Their discussion leads to an invitation. Soon, Teddy’s on her way to Philadelphia, where Rachel is a student, to share an apartment and begin an exciting new life in the City.

Teddy views Rachel as perfect.  Rachel can’t bring herself to shatter the image by letting on that she is having an affair with a married man. Just when Teddy is starting to feel at home, Rachel insists on some privacy.  Acting out her anger at being asked to stay away, Teddy indulges in a one-night stand.

When Teddy returns to their apartment the next morning, Rachel is being carried out on a stretcher – the victim of carbon monoxide poisoning. This unforeseen tragedy leaves Teddy alone in a strange city, with no money, no friends, and no connections.

As Teddy struggles to find her way, she meets a mentor at the same university Rachel previously attended who takes an interest in her, but with strings attached. She also develops a unique bond with the firefighter who rescued Rachel.  And yet, Teddy remains committed to helping Rachel get back on her feet, at a time when no one else who supposedly loves her can accept her in this diminished way.  Along the way, Teddy discovers her own strength in the roles of caretaker, lover, and friend.

If you love a strong female character, one with a lot of spunk and desire to survive against the odds, then pick up a copy of “She Ain't Heavy”. We can all learn a thing or two from a character like Teddy. A Book and a Chat with Jennifer Wilck

If you like your romance novels with spunky heroines, strong heroes with just a touch of vulnerability, then my guest Jennifer Wilck is the author for you.
When Jennifer was young, rather than counting sheep when she had issues getting to sleep her mother told her to make up stories in her head hoping she would go to sleep. This soon became a routine which she admitted is something she still does to this day.

Eventually the voice became so strong she one day decided to write these stories down the results of which are now available for all to enjoy. Her first two book are “A Heart of Little Faith” and “Skin Deep”.

A Heart of Little Faith:

Lily Livingston is a widow raising her six-year-old daughter, Claire, in New York City. Devastated by her husband's death three years ago, she's in no hurry to fall in love again. Besides, trying to balance her career with motherhood leaves her little time for romance. With a wheelchair instead of a white horse, and a vow against falling in love again as his armor, Gideon Stone is the last person Lily expects to sweep her off her feet. But when a business agreement forces the two of them together, that is exactly what happens. As they navigate the minefield that fast represents their relationship, can either of them overcome the obstacles to find true happiness in each others arms? The answer is yes, but the bumps along the way demonstrate that neither of them can go it alone

Skin Deep:

The last thing Valerie needs, after escaping an abusive marriage to an alcoholic and rebuilding her life, is a broody, secretive, standoffish man. But that's exactly what she gets when she becomes a makeup artist on the set of a hit sitcom and draws the attention of the series' star. John Samuels hides a terrible past--a life of abuse and neglect. A successful acting career and the affection and support of cast, crew and friends, does nothing to convince him that he is anything other than an unlovable monster. Will he learn that the life he's been living has been built on a lie or will he be doomed to repeat the sins of his father?

These two have now been followed what promises to be the first of a series “The Seduction of Esther”.

About “The Seduction of Esther” : (taken from authors web site)

Samara Goldberg has a problem even the most beautiful singing voice can’t fix. She’s a walking disaster, especially when she’s around handsome men. To make matters worse, she’s in desperate need of someone to play the character of Mordecai for the Purim spiel she’s producing and the new congregant, Nathaniel Abramson, is a perfect fit. Nathaniel is a divorced dad who’s recovering from the biggest public scandal of his life. The last thing he needs is a relationship with the choir director at his new synagogue, who also happens to be playing the lead female role of Esther in the very play he’s been coerced into joining.

Woven around the Jewish holiday of Purim, The Seduction of Esther is a story of two people whose lives mirror the plot of the Purim story. Like Esther, who had to hide her Jewish identity from the King of Persia, Samara and Nathaniel are hiding key pieces of themselves. Evil Haman wanted to destroy the Jews, and the nasty Josh will do anything to keep Samara and Nathaniel apart. Will their love survive, like the Jewish people in Shushan, Persia, or will their fear keep them apart?

With a follow up to “The Seduction of Esther” and a story based around an old house already underway, the name Jennifer Wilck is one for lovers of romance need to follow.

A Book and a Chat with Frank F. Fiore

If like myself you like the type of adventure novels written by Clive Cussler and Tom Clancy then my guest on tonight’s show has a book for you. Frank F. Fiore is a bestselling author of over 50,000 copies of his non-fiction books. His success has continued since our last chat following up his much praised action-adventure novel "Cyberkill" with four more must read books.

Cyberkill is described by one reviewer thus…
I've seen the future of war and it is by remote control. No longer will it be a fight of soldiers and guns, but rival lines of code will compete for victory over the enemy's information infrastructure. Such dramatic change is fraught with danger. While technology is advancing at such an accelerated rate, do we continue to control the machines or are they starting to control us?

Frank Fiore's `Cyberkill' is a fast paced high-tech thriller that goes straight to the heart of the matter, feeding our worst robotic nightmares. Technology's cutting edge becomes double-edged in the hands of a chilling cyber-terrorist, who is unwittingly aided by a corrupt and unscrupulous military. Nanotechnologies, biological warfare and killer robots are all part of the repertoire that together threatens the very existence of all mankind.

As the news over the past years this is not to far away from the truth…
.
Frank followed up with an three book adventure series "The Chronicle's of Jeremy Nash" the formula which consists of a conspiracy theory, unsolved mystery, urban myth, New Age belief or paranormal practice that Nash is forced to pursue; combined with an underlying real world event, organization or persons that is somehow connected to what he is pursuing. This provides the thriller aspect of the stories.

Now his latest book “The Oracle” has been released, though it was as we found out 40 years in the making.

About “The Oracle”:

“The Oracle” consists of a series of short stories tied together by means of a background story – a story within a story (similar to Ray Bradbury’s “Illustrated Man”). And like the Jeffrey Archer and Twilight Zone stories, the Oracle short stories are written with surprise endings.

While this is Frank’s latest book he also shared with us about his next book, which he believes will firmly put his name on the literary map.

It’s called MURRAN. Frank firmly believes this will be his breakthrough novel because it is steeped in politically incorrect controversy and is already getting very good reviews from my beta readers.

MURRAN is the story of a young African-American boy named Trey coming of age in the 1980s, and his rite of passage to adulthood. Trey is a member of a ‘crew’ in Brooklyn and is enticed into helping a violent drug gang. He is eventually framed for murder and flees with his high school teacher to his Maasai village in Kenya. There, Trey learns what a true Black African and African culture is, goes through the Maasai warrior’s rite of passage, becomes a young shaman, and returns to America to confront the gang leader that framed him.

A Book and a Chat with Rosalyn Berne

Rosalyn Berne has always known that she was different from most people.  Even as a child she was aware of things that others could not see or hear, experiencing the life force around her. As she grew older like a lot of things, this gift seemed to leave her as she dedicated her life to education.

With a BA, MA, and PH.D in hand, Rosalyn as a university professor she writes and teaches about engineering and technology in society and the ethical implications of technological development, often using science fiction material in her classes.

Then about 6 years ago the talents that had laid latent since she was a child started to return and with them something new that has since changed her life.

Returning to Costa Rica―a once–visited sanctuary—she sought solace from the world and hoped to begin healing from a painful divorce and the subsequent breakdown of her family.   Drawn to the horses that are part of the working farm-resort that was her retreat, she suddenly and unexpectedly received a gift―the ability to communicate with them.   And what they said changed her life.

In her book “When the Horses Whisper” Rosalyn shows the true power of horses.  Once they realized that Rosalyn was able to ‘hear’ them they opened up completely, showing her a world of strength, beauty and, most importantly, love.  She begins to realize how strong the bond is between horse and human and how anyone can communicate with them on a deeper level.   She also learns how they can help humans to heal from loss and pain as she begins to recover from her own grief, including the loss of a child, a traumatic childhood encounter, and the end of her marriage.

About “When the Horses Whisper” : (taken from Authors web site)

When the Horses Whisper shows the capacity of horses to help us heal the human heart. It expresses human language what horses have to say when given the chance to speak. It is a story about the bond between horse and human, and the communication made possible when the bond is based on love.

Conversations with fifteen horses most of whom live and work in Costa Rica, are featured along with their photographs, capturing them as individual beings in service to humans on a shared evolutionary journey. This journey amounts to the remembering of our whole selves in the wholeness of creation, especially the parts we split off, deny, and place in shadow because they are too painful. Horses, as the book shows, can help us see these lost parts, and call forth our courage to reclaim them.

For the author, these included the loss of a newborn daughter, the mental illness of an adult son, letting go of a thirty-year marriage, and childhood sexual abuse. The story recounts the equine healing work that helped in reclaiming her authentic self. This book is testimony to the power of horses and equine healing work in transforming life’s losses into a deeper human wholeness and a further communion with the non-human world.

A Book and a Chat with Natalie Gayle

In her teens Natalie Gayle, author of Finding Trust and the guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” took an occupational test and it said I should be a writer. She did not think anything more of it creating a career as a project manager in IT, all the time though this longing to become a writer was there bubbling under the surface.

As we learned during an entertaining though due to phone issues a sometimes interrupted show, this hidden need to write finally produced Natalie’s debut novel Finding Trust” which was released earlier this year and has been followed by “Finding Judgment”.

Finding Trust is not your normal romance novel, it is part contemporary romance, part romantic suspense, and part science fiction ...or paranormal romance with some urban fantasy thrown in for good measure. The result however is a book that many are already stating is a “must read” and one that you just can’t put down.

About “Finding Trust”:

He’s hot, sexy, and leads a double life. Sometimes in the limelight, mostly in the shadows. Brayden James holds fast to a secret that’s more than his to share.

She’s a singularly focused veterinarian out for a rare night of fun with friends, at a New Year’s Eve rock concert. Going home with the lead guitarist was furthest thing from Rihanna Mason’s mind when the night began.

When Rihanna inadvertently becomes the target of a deadly terrorist plot using the Hendra virus as a biological weapon, Brayden is forced to reveal his other life.  His job is to keep her safe and together they must stop the terrorists before it’s too late. But what happens when she becomes more to him than just the assignment?

Will the secret he cannot disclose ultimately prove too much for Rihanna’s fragile trust in relationships? Or will he finally break through the double brick walls around her heart, where every other man has failed?

As one reviewer stated about what she liked about the book…

WHAT I LIKED: Everything. I was drawn in from the very first page and the connection I felt to the characters was intense. Instead of feeling like I was the reader, I felt like I was every characters; I loved when they did, cried when they did, jumped in surprise when they did, etc. I felt like these characters and the story were pouring out of the pages and into my apartment. The author is very talented and has gained a new fan... Me.

Well reviewer I too have joined the band of fans of Natalie Gayle

A Book and a Chat with DV Berkom

Today’s guest DV Berkom is the author of two bestselling thriller series featuring strong female protagonists.

Always having this driving force to write, DV’s first effort was created at the age of seven. After attempts with fantasy and mystery, DV found her true vocation writing two bestselling thriller series.

Her first, the “Kate Jones Thriller Series”, which include Bad Spirits, Dead of Winter, Death Rites and Touring for Death began as an online serial. Her second, “The Leine Basso Thriller Series”, features former assassin Madeleine (Leine) Basso, whose past returns to haunt her in “Serial Date” and “Bad Traffick”.

Her Obvious love of her love of creating resilient, kick-*ss female characters stems from a lifelong addiction to reading spy novels, mysteries, and thrillers, and longing to find the female equivalent within those pages.

DV normally gets her ideas from the news. Something hits her between the eyes and she can ‘see’ the main characters, and many of the secondary ones. The “Kate Jones Thriller series” for instance began when reports of rising cartel violence began trickling north. The book Serial Date was my response to the over-abundance of scripted reality shows and DV wrote Bad Traffick after watching a documentary on child sex-trafficking.

DV’s latest book is "Yucatan Dead" the sixth in the  Kate Jones series it is  set in steamy Mexican jungle as Kate hides from a ruthless drug lord who was her former lover.

About “Yucatan Dead” : (taken from the authors web site)

She was a dangerous man's lover--now she's his dangerous enemy.
For Kate Jones, being on the run from her former lover—the vicious leader of a Mexican drug cartel—was never going to be easy. But with a new identity, a new lover, and a new life in Arizona, she was beginning to believe she'd made it through the worst.

Then, in an act of twisted revenge, Kate's kidnapped and imprisoned by her deadly enemy, his intention to force her to pay back the money she stole before he kills her.

Fate intervenes and she finds herself working against the cartels deep in the Yucatan with a group of rogue commandos. From peaceful northern Arizona to the steamy jungles of Mexico, Kate Jones must decide for herself if she'll continue to run...

...or turn and fight the evil that pursues her.

As the Pacific Book Review stated…”Yucatán Dead is a gripping thriller with a gutsy heroine and a tightly woven plot; it will no doubt please Berkom's current fans and gather more.”

I for one have joined those fans of today’s guest DV Berkom.

A Book and a Chat with Dr Florence Weinberg

Dr Florence Weinberg at the age of four shortly after she’d learned to read published her first poem in a children's magazine and wrote her first 'novel' at age six, entitled “Ywain, King of All Cats”, not only wrote it but illustrated the 'book' herself as well.

After a childhood traveling extensively with her family, she followed her mother into a career in education, and though she produced four scholarly books it was not until she retired that the real creative juices had a chance to flow.

Florence has now produced ten novels, ranging from fantasy to historical romance and mystery.

Four are historical mysteries starring the 18th-century Jesuit missionary, Father Ignaz (Ygnacio) Pfefferkorn. Two of these are set in the Sonora Desert, the third in an ancient monastery in Spain, and the fourth, Unrest in Eden, follows Pfefferkorn's fate after his release from Spanish prison.

Five of the historical novels have received a total of ten awards: Apache Lance, Franciscan Cross (three awards), about the founding of San Antonio, Seven Cities of Mud (one award), depicting the fate of the small Franciscan expedition up the Rio Grande in 1581-82, forty years after Coronado, Sonora Moonlight (one award), about Father Ygnacio’s confrontation with a Pima Indian medicine man and his search for the murderer of a local white rancher by beheading and crucifixion, Sonora Wind (three awards), about Father Ygnacio’s pursuit of the murderer of an army captain sent to inspect the mission’s books, together with a depiction of his arrest and expulsion along with all Jesuits from Spain and the colonies in 1767, The Storks of La Caridad (nominated for the 2011 Global e-Book Award), and Unrest in Eden (two awards).

Her latest novel “Anselm, a Metamorphosis” is a fantasy thriller has taken many years to see the light of day starting as a short story several years ago before now revealing itself as a full grown novel.

About "Anselm, a Metamorphosis" : (taken from authors web site)

Eric Behrens, a young, superficial, frivolous Assistant Professor of English literature, has an affair with an undergraduate, Diana Gregg, the daughter of the chairman of the Board of Trustees of Woodward State University in upstate New York. Her father discovers the affair and has Behrens fired.

Behrens blames the world and Diana, curses them and wishes he were someone, anyone, else. He trips, knocks himself out, and wakes up as a fat, middle-aged Benedictine monk named Anselm.

The book has already received many reviews and was Amazon’s Number one fantasy book for October.

A Book and a Chat with Annie-Laurie Hunter

Sometimes a story just comes to you, almost as if the main character had been waiting there until you noticed them. Then once you do and open yourself up to their story it just flows from you. Such was the case with my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”.

Annie-Laurie Hunter heard the story from her main character Sarah and within five weeks had the story written.  As she explained during the show, it was like Sarah was sitting next to her, waiting patiently for Annie-Laurie to keep up with her narration as she told her story for all to read.

Annie-Laurie’s debut book “The Sarah Puzzle” is intended to for mature readers, it contains explicit sexual content and in many aspects it can be called disturbing, however as many reviewers have stated it is one that you just can’t put down.

About “The Sarah Puzzle” (Taken from Amazon) :

“Tony, we’ve got a kid up here.” So begins The Sarah Puzzle. Why is a tiny mute child sleeping in a condemned building in the Village? Where did she come from and how has she survived alone? As the community fits the puzzle pieces together a horrifying picture emerges of pedophilia, psychological abuse, and murder. Can Sarah integrate love, caring, and faith into her sense of self, which was formed in depravity? The Sarah Puzzle can only be solved by grownups who will not stand idly by in the face of evil. Are you willing to journey with Sarah to solve The Sarah Puzzle?

As one reviewer put it…

The Sarah Puzzle is an engaging primer for what the helping community can and should do for victims of sexual abuse. Sarah's journey from nameless, voiceless victim to a young girl who is well on her way to recovery, is engrossing, horrifying and hopeful, all at once. Though at times difficult to read, given the subject matter, the book is well-written, and the characters are brought to life in a really human way. Annie-Laurie Hunter has created and carefully crafted a wonderful main character, as well as those on Sarah's Team. It's a great example of the healing that can take place when sensitivity, caring, thoughtful intervention and compassion are at the heart of the helping community. This book should be required reading for anyone who works with victims of sexual abuse!

His debut book “Mystic Pete Chronicles – Book 1: Sex & Mysticism” is the first in a series of books in which he provides a fresh, innovative and often humorous “how-to manual” for acquiring advanced mystical power.

Presented in an engaging style, his ideas will make you stop, laugh, and think—the recipe for a great guidebook. Starting with an assessment of where we are now, Mystic Pete then takes us to a new reality that is sure to rearrange your view of who we are and where we’re going.

Some of the jewels of wisdom he drops on us: the two big lessons we have to learn, the most important secret to great sex, the purpose of the universe, the plan, and -a really interesting view of what spurred the construction of our civilization.

Using his own spiritual training method, the Five Powers- Self Protection, Healing, Raw Power, Manifestation, and Guidance- Mystic Pete guides the reader to wisdom, compassion, and dignity and provides a comprehensive foundation in mysticism.

In his future books “Mystic Pete” will provide much more details on each of the five powers along with the body, relationships, mystical sex techniques, the spiritual laws, and advanced matters.

A Book and a Chat with Mike Bond

After being off for a week due to family illness and incidents I am back with another cracking guest, this time in the form of best-selling novelist, war and human rights correspondent, environmental activist, award-winning poet and international energy expert, Mike Bond.

Mike has lived globetrotting and often dangerous life , he’s  lived and worked in over thirty countries on six continents. An adviser to the US and foreign governments, human rights and war correspondent, award-winning poet and international energy expert, Mike has used his own experience of many dangerous, remote and war-torn regions of the world to enhance his bestselling novels… he is… as the BBC called him…” The master of the existential thriller" .

Mike’s four previous novels are all based on his experiences in far, dangerous corners of the world:

THE LAST SAVANNA: A former British commando battles elephant poachers who then kidnap the woman he loves, in this acclaimed inside story of Africa's disappearing savannas, animals and freedoms.
CROSSFIRE: A British undercover agent fights for his life in Beirut at the height of the Lebanese War -- a deep look into the Middle East's ancient wars and hatreds.

FIRE LIKE THE SUN: An international best-seller about U.S. nuclear warheads lost in the Himalayas, a manhunt through Nepal, Iran, Greece, Algeria, France, Virginia and Colorado.

NIGHT OF THE DEAD: Vietnam vet and weed smuggler Joe Murphy loses his plane in a Guatemalan jungle attack, falls in love with the woman guerrilla who heals him, and fights to protect them both as the death squads hunt them down.

Now he brings us a his latest thriller  SAVING PARADISE in which an Afghanistan War veteran–turned-surfer risks his life and freedom to search for a journalist’s murderer.

About "Saving Paradise": (taken from Authors Web Page)

When a beautiful journalist drowns mysteriously in Honolulu Bay, former Special Forces veteran Pono Hawkins, now a well-known Hawaii surfer and international correspondent for surfing magazines, soon gets embroiled in trying to find why she died. What he learns quickly makes him a target for murder or life in prison as a cabal of powerful corporations, foreign killers and crooked politicians turns the blame on him.

Haunted by memories of Afghanistan, and determined to protect the Hawaii he loves from dirty politics tied to huge destructive energy developments, Pono turns to Special Forces buddies and his own skills to fight his deadly enemies, trying both to save himself and find her killers.

Alive with the sights, sounds and history of Hawaii, Saving Paradise is also a deeply rich portrait of what Pono calls “the seamy side of paradise”, and an exciting thriller of politics, lies and remorseless murder.

Mike Bond’s critically acclaimed novels depict the innate hunger of the human heart for good, the intense joys of love, the terror and fury of battle, the sinister vagaries of politics and multinational corporations, and the magical beauty of the vanishing natural world in thrill a minute, page turning, must read adventures.
