A Book and a Chat with Arny Alberts

A terrible, and all too common, fact of today’s world is that children are sexually abused. Not just by strangers, which is horrific enough, but by those who are supposed to guard and cherish them. When the most trusted exploit this dependence, the ultimate effect can only be a long-term disaster in the making.

My guest today Arny Alberts in his new book,”Burnt Cookies” tells of his own horrific experience at the hands of an older and trusted man when he was just fifteen.

In unflinching detail he describes how he became involved with Coach without really understanding the consequences it would have on him for the rest of his life.
Burnt Cookies:A Quest for Closure” is no holds barred true live experience that that makes you shudder, think and hopefully bring hope.

During the show, Arny shared with us how his life was affected by the abuse he received leading to seizure disorder, sexual abuse, therapy, and family-related that scarred him though life.

During the program we learned how one phone call, lead to trail that ended with thirteen men holding a press conference outing what this coach had done to them, and hopefully saving more teenagers from a similar abusive fate.

As hard as it was to read such as this, it needs to be brought out in the open so parents will be aware of the damage pedophiles can inflict on a person’s life.

Arny Alberts and his book “Burnt Cookies” , is one such read that will help victims and family alike.

So sit back and listen to an interesting thirty minutes on today’s A Book and a Chat with Arny Alberts."

A Book and a Chat with J. Nicole Spencer

My guest today is Jamika Nicole Spencer, though she goes by her middle name of Nicole as that means “Victory” and “People”. This she feels is a mandate for her life, as Nicole who has always been a fighter, standing up for others, now uses her faith and belief to assist people in obtaining victory in their own lives.

Nicole’s first book “Sarah’s Secrets: Exposing the Fear of Submission” is the story of her own journey of learning Godly submission. a book that teaches women about biblical submission.

From a history of her own abusive marriage, this was a topic that she fought with for a long time, as do many women today. Submission is a topic that society has rejected time and time again, yet our Bible teaches it. In the book she reveals three simple but powerful secrets that will help women submit to God first then to godly authority in their lives. Sarah Abraham’s wife is our teacher and four women grow to learn how these secrets can benefit them.

Nicole has come a long way in a short time, starting a business with faith and three thousand dollars in the middle of a recession into a one that has grown 4 times over.

From Christian Touch Media in Forest Hill with a mission to provide multiple outlets of media and marketing for the Christian community, to Redeemed Platinum Wear, a Christian clothing line for men women and children. Along the way intruducing War Call Records to create God inspired music.

Nicole is also the host of “On the Spot” a local radio broadcast a weekly round table panel, recorded in front of a live studio audience, embarking on controversial topics rarely discussed amongst Christians.

So sit back and listen to an enjoyable thirty minutes on today’s A Book and a Chat with J. Nicole Spencer."

A Book and a Chat with Weston Locher

To quote a Yiddish proverb “What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul”. I am a great believer in this, and so is my guest on today's “A Book and a Chat with Weston Locher."

Weston, had no chance with avoiding having literature as an important thing in his life. With a mother who was an English teacher, and a father who is a journalist, he was to a life of writing before he was able to consciously make the decision for himself. He chose to write humor because his parents made the mistake of telling him that he was funny. This is further proof he says of why you shouldn’t lie to your children. Mind you as Weston shared with us... “It’s handy having a mother whose and English teacher when it comes to having your work edited.”

Weston produced numerous short essays, including one “101 Ways To Hurt Yourself: A Children’s Guide To Recess” which was a semifinalist of “America’s Funniest Humor “ awards at humorpress.com. (You can find this essay at http://humorpress.com/Results/Essays-200910-200911/b-SemiFins/Essay-200910-200911-SemiFinalists.htm )

He launched the Musings on Minutiae humor blog in January of 2009 to collect his observations into one place where they could be enjoyed by everyone. Taking fifty of his blog essays, Weston merged them into his debut book “Musings on Minutiae”. These stories Includes his humorous and sometimes unbelievable childhood memories, tales of life in an urban apartment complex, the funny observations that come from living with felines, and much more.

During the show we found out more about Weston and his unique take on life, how he came to produce the book and what lessons he has not only learned with promoting this his first book, also how he has shared that knowledge on his blog for other new and would be authors. I myself love the way that he is sharing is book on Kindle for the small amount of only $0.99. As we discussed it’s not going to make him money but it will get his name out there, so when the 3rd, 4th or 5th books come out he will already have a following.

As Victor Borge once said “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people” so why not release your chuckle bone and listen to an enjoyable thirty minutes on today’s A Book and a Chat with Weston Locher."

A Book and a Chat with Jay P White

Jay P. White, is my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”. During his childhood he spent many summers sailing on Lake Erie. In the early 1980s, he worked delivering sailboats up and down the Eastern seaboard, to the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

Jay is the author of four published books of poems, and numerous essays, articles, fiction, reviews and interviews. His first and by no means his last novel “Every Boat Turns South” is dotted with his own experiences sailing the Caribbean waters.

As Jay shared with us during the program, the book had a tough time plowing through the merky waters of publishing, being tossed from agent to publisher the journey has taken over ten years, but as anybody who has read the novel will testify, the arrival of “Every Boat Turns South” was well worth waiting for.

About Every Book Turns South:

It's the story of Matt Younger, a 30-year-old boat delivery captain who returns to Florida after a 13 year absence to make a confession to his dying father. Matt wants to tell his father about a failed boat delivery from
West Palm Beach to St. Thomas, but the father only wants to hear about Matt's role in the death of the favorite son, Hale..

The book is meditation on dying, mixed with love and forgiveness, all tossed into an adventure odyssey that takes you along routes that I’m sure Jay himself has sailed, and many of the characters he has met along the way.

During the show we learned about what else Jay has been writing, another book of poems and an historical novel set during Prohibition entitled, Whiskey and Hard Water. Add to that the fact that there will be three more books in the Matt Younger series; there can be nothing but good times and fair winds ahead for today’s guest Jay P White.

So sit back and listen to an enjoyable thirty minutes on today’s "A Book and a Chat with Jay P White."

A Book and a Chat with Teresa K. Thorne

My guest today on "A Book and a Chat" has just produced her debut historical fiction novel, Noah’s Wife, though it is not the first the world has heard of this fascinating lady.

Growing up Teresa wanted to be an astronaut, until her father told her that was just not possible, stating that her eyesight was not good enough rather than the fact that at that time astronauts were male only. Instead she headed for a career in social working which led indirectly to her twenty two years in the police force.

However as we learned during the radio show, even as a rookie cop she still kept writing, with one of her yet unpublished works “Partners” coming from those early days.

Teresa tried her hand at historical fantasy, science fiction even a children’s mid-reader novel, on the way producing a screenplay, "Six Blocks Wide", which was shown at film festivals in Alabama and Europe.

Eventually she started on historical fiction novel, Noah's Wife (you just think you know why Noah built an ark!). During the show the whole historical aspect of how and why the characters directed Teresa to produce this book was shared.

About Noah’s Wife:
Noah’s Wife is Na’amah, a beautiful young girl with Asperger Syndrome who wishes only to be a shepherdess on her beloved hills in ancient Turkey, a desire shattered by the hatred of her powerful brother, the love of two men, and a looming disaster that threatens her world.

Na’amah tells her story and sees the world through the unique lens of a condition known today as Asperger's Syndrome. Her savant abilities and penchant to speak truth forces her down a dangerous path in an age of change--a time of challenge to the goddess' ancient ways, when cultures clash and the earth itself is unstable. When foreign raiders kidnap Na’amah, her journey to escape and return home becomes an attempt to save her people from the disaster only she knows is coming.

The Biblical account of Noah's wife only gives us a nameless woman who bears Noah's children and is with him in the ark. T.K. Thorne, an award winning author, has filled in the story with her imagination based on geological and archeological evidence of a great flood in the Black Sea region 7,000 years ago.

So sit back and listen to an enjoyable sixty minutes on today’s "A Book and a Chat with Teresa K. Thorne."

A Book and a Chat with Naheed H. Senzai

My guest on today’s "A Book and a Chat" has been traveling since she was two months old, spending much of the early part of her life in Saudi Arabia before moving onto London. N. H. Senzai and her book "Shooting Kabul" which is launched this next Tuesday; make a fascinating interview to be shared by listeners on the show today.

Shooting Kabulfollows young Fadi and his family as they make a harrowing escape from Taliban-ruled Afghanistan to the safety of California. But before they make it to safety, Fadi’s six-year-old sister, Mariam is accidentally left behind. The rest of the family makes it to California heartbroken, each of them blaming themselves for Mariam’s loss. On top of all that, they have to deal with the cultural confusion and isolation of being Muslim Afghans in America, especially when 9/11 hits.

With her enjoyment the history, back-story and details of what she is writing, as well as her own personal connection with Afghanistan, Naheed manages to weave facts about Afghanistan’s history and Muslim traditions into the natural progression of the plot. It is a book that young and the not so young people of all backgrounds, especially those from immigrant families, will relate to Fadi’s confused yet loyal character.

From her early days eating camel meatloaf a recipe that might not be in one of her over 300 cookbooks, to smuggling illegal books into English classes at her English boarding school this talented writer has come a long way.

During the show Naheed, not only shares some of these early days on the show, but also her plans for future work and how being with a group of fellow debut authors has helped her along the publishing path.

So why not sit back and listen to an enjoyable sixty minutes on today’s "A Book and a Chat with Naheed H Senzia."

A Book and a Chat with Robert "Doc" Gowdy

My guest on today's show Robert "Doc" Gowdy has been writing seriously, albeit academically, for a little over fifteen years. Now he has moved from the dryness of academic writing to a world of his own creation in his debut fiction novel, "Captain Bonny Morgan: The Cassandra Prophesy".

Captain Bonny Morgan: The Cassandra Prophesy is about the first steps in bringing down an evil galactic empire, the empire of Emperor Tulla the First. Captain Bonny Morgan, a beautiful galactic pirate, is contracted by an unknown “entity” to kidnap Princess Cosette, the Emperor’s step-daughter, in an effort to set events into motion. After Captain Morgan kidnaps Princess Cosette, her sister, Princess Lysette, sets out to find her kidnapped sister with the help of her beautiful but extremely mischievous slavegirl, Tink. The story is all about Tink and Princess Lysette’s adventure, and all the political intrigues, hidden agendas, unexpected revelations, and bold, daring gambits by everyone involved at every level of the conspiracy to overthrow the Emperor Tulla.

The book which is the first of a trilogy has enabled “Doc” to bring some of his favorite characters from literature and movies into a smart, entertaining, and often funny, adventure involving galactic pirates trying to overthrow an evil Imperial government. It is full of entertaining characters, a down to “earth” adventure novel set in the science fiction genre laced throughout with subtle and blatant humor.

During the show, “Doc” discussed how many of the characters came about from the playful, mischievous, and funny Tink (a full grown version of Tinker Bell), to Captain Bonny Morgan herself, (even the name is a mixture of Anne Bonny and Henry Morgan). The whole inspiration behind the story, the characters as well as how the various steps to production of his book were discussed by “Doc”.

The topic of how characters can lead you off on different tangents and the use of the internet and virtual book tours was discussed in what was a really entertaining and enjoyable thirty minute show, as I hosted “A Book and a Chat with Robert "Doc" Gowdy”.

A Book and a Chat with Heidi R Kling

I am so pleased to finally meet up with my guest on tonight program after our missing out on our show last week. It is with a huge amount of pleasure that I was able to have a return visit from Heidi R Kling, author of the much waited for “Sea”.

I say much waited for but actually it was launched this last week, and I know from my own check with the staff of Borders where I was doing a book signing on Friday, the book has already been ordered bu many readers.

As one blogger wrote…

Sea by Heidi R. Kling is one of those books that sweeps you up and carries you away to another world when you’re not even paying attention. It’s not until much later — when you’ve practically finished the novel — that you realize how it has captured your attention.

It is a book that has been talked about and written about for months now as of last week it’s available for all.

During the show I was lucky enough to have several callers dial in to speak to Heidi, whom in her own inimitable fashion took each question in her stride, not only answering the person but adding extras to the listener’s question.

Being the second appearance by Heidi, I was able to look at some of the things we do not know about this author, including at a previous job she used to sometimes dress up in fishnets, to “Spelunking” in New Zealand.

As normal it was great to chat with Heidi, a show that all will listen and enjoy, as I spend a Sunday evening hosting “A Book and a Chat with Heidi R Kling”.

A Book and a Chat with "Shannon Delany"

I have Shannon Delany as my guest on todays show, another of the wonderful group of authors who have their debut YA novel out this year. I am so pleased to have her as a guest to discuss her long awaited book "13 to Life".

There are some books that the expectasion bubbles up amongst the YA readers, until you almost feel the launch has already taken place.

There are some books that the expectation bubbles up amongst the YA readers, until you almost feel the launch has already taken place, “13 to Life” is one of those books. There has been so much written and commented about this debut novel that it is somewhat of a shock to realize that the actual launch date is not until June 22nd.

Shannon shared with us so much in the hugely entertaining sixty minutes of today’s “A Book and a Chat” it is a case of where to start.

After growing up writing various articles as a freelance journalist, Shannon wrote a serialized version of "13 to Life" at Textnovel.com and won the first-ever cell phone novel contest in the western world.

This opened the flood gates to her writing future, and agent then a film request and finally a publishing house followed one after the other taking Shannon somewhat by surprise, so that when she was asked to send in her completed manuscript of “13 to Life” as she explained during the show some “solid writing was required in a short time”

From those early days Shannon went on to describe during the show the various steps she has made along the way to the launch of the book. The fact the second novel is already with the publisher, who are stating they like it even better than “13 to Life” and the fact that the third novel is in the editing stage.

We discussed the advantages of being a member of a support group such as “The class of 2010”, to share knowledge, inspiration and understanding along the publishing highway. As well as many other aspects both of writing and the production of this already much acclaimed book. As well as the bad rap that wolves get compared to vampires.

So why not sit back and listen to “A Book and a Chat with Shannon Delany”

About "13 to Life"

"13 to Life is about love, loss, the meaning of friendship and what really defines a man versus a monster. It’s very much about self-discovery as Jessie tries to figure things out after losing someone she loves very much. And did I mention it’s about monsters? Yeah. Different people will take different things away from the story–some will pick up the quieter themes Shannon has tucked in there, some will just read it for fun. To me, that’s the way it should be."

Book and a Chat with Chrystal Storm aka DCS

My guest on a “Book and a Chat this evening is Chrystal Storm aka DCS author of the sci-fi thriller, Synarchy Book 1: The Awakening and host of Blog Talk Radio's “Paranormal 101”

DCS is a spiritual activist and student as well as a radio show host and most important of all an author.

Be is spirituality, sociology, psychology DCS is a schizophrenic author hell bent on educating the world on the hidden mysteries of you. I’m having a lot of fun doing it.
Synarchy Book 1: The Awakening is a Best Books Award finalist described by some as “The Godfather meets Stargate”

The story is complex with many twists and turns that keeps the reading wanting more, the world in which the story takes place in unique. Some reviewers have said...

“For me, the best way to describe SYNARCHY is by simply saying that author DCS created a story where the reader didn't continue as a reader. She really brought us down into the pages of her book and it felt like we were journeying right along with the characters as they struggle to make sense of a world turned upside down.”

With the second book in SYNARCHY due out in July, and several more in being planned by this fascinating author, it looks like DCS will soon be making a name for herself in the book world.

So why not listen to an entertaining thirty minutes as I share a “A Book and a Chat with Chrystal Storm aka DCS".

A Book and a Chat with Renee Hand

On today’s “A Book and a Chat” I am very pleased to have making a return visit the wonderful children’s book author, Renee Hand.

Previously Renee appeared on the show chatting about her children’s series of books “The Crypto-Capers” the first book of the series “The Case of the Missing Sock” had just been released.

Since her previous appearance the talented author has gone from strength to strength producing “The Case of Red Rock Canyon” and “Legend of the Golden Monkey” books two and three of “The Crypto-Capers”. Renee outlined these books as well as sharing with us about two further books in this great children’s series.

As well as adding to the “The Crypto-Capers” range of books, Renee has started a new series of books for a slightly younger audience with “The Adventures of Joe-Joe Nut and Biscuit Bill” Case #1: The Great Pie Catastrophe.

This is another great educational series for young children. The reader will be reading and learning about various skills that will supplement what children will be learning about in school. In book 1 your child will begin to learn about deduction and reasoning as well as about animal tracks and some of the animals who make them. Book 1 is a cute and interesting story children of all ages will love.

From how the characters in her new books got their names after a family party to how the books are becoming a must for school libraries, “A Book and a Chat with Renee Hand” is a program all will enjoy.

A Book and a Chat with René Colato Laínez

My guest on today’s "A Book and a Chat" is René Colato Laínez the Salvadoran award winning author of I Am René, the Boy/ Soy René, el niño, Waiting for Papá/ Esperando a Papá, and Playing Lotería/ El juego de la lotería. His picture books have been honored by the Latino Book Award, the Paterson Prize for Books for Young People, the California Collection for Elementary Readers, the Tejas Star Book Award Selection and the New Mexico Book Award. He was named “Top Ten New Latino Authors to Watch (and Read)” by latinostories.com. René is a graduate of the Vermont College MFA program in Writing for Children & Young Adults.

René's goal as a writer is to produce good multicultural children's literature; stories where minority children are portrayed in a positive way, where they can see themselves as heroes, and where they can dream and have hopes for the future. He wants to write authentic stories of Latin American children living in the United States.

From early days he has always loved writing completing his first novel at the age of fifteen, this was closely followed by five other novels before life in the form of becoming a teacher overtook his writing challange.

As Rene explained during the show he soon realized that though he was teaching in a Spanish school there was a lack of books to read with the young children. So the novels that Rene had created soon came into being. This has led to many books being enjoyed as Rene shared with us by children all across the country.

René Colato Laínez has come a long way from the young child that fled from El Salvador to the United States, many of whose adventures can be shared in his novels.

So sit back and find out more about this fascinating and multi award winning author on "A Book and a Chat with René Colato Laínez"
