A Book and a Chat with Lucha Corpi
Poet, novelist, and children's book writer Lucha Corpi was my guest on “A Book and a Chat” today. Lucha is one of those people who have lived such interesting lives and produced such a myriad of different literature that chatting to her for thirty minutes only scratched the surface of this ladies talent.
Born in in a small town in Mexico called Jaltipan in the state of Veracruz, Lucha made her way as a young bride to Berkeley, California, arriving in 1964 when the hippy movement was flowing through the west coast. As Lucha explained to us during the show, she found it strange that these people thought it was “far out” to be walking around barefoot, whereas to Lucha it was just like being back in her home town.
From those early days Lucha started producing poetry, becoming a firmly establish Chicana poet with her book Palabras de Medioda/Noon Words. During the show we learned how Lucha writes her poetry in Spanish and her novels in English, though this first book has been translated into English by Catherine Rodriguez-Nieto.
From the poetry start, my guest went from a children book to then write novels, about her favorite subject of mystery. During the show Lucha shared with us, how her love of mystery and crime desended from reading to her father, except for the one “local crime page” which her father took out of the paper before the young girl could read it.
Since then Lucha Corpi has gone from strength to strength with the fourth book in the Gloria Damasco series coming out the end of last year called “Death at Solstice: A Gloria Damasco Mystery” coming out the end of last year.
With such an interesting an entertaining author the show just sped by, so why not sit back and listen to thirty minutes of pure enjoyment as I share “A Book and a Chat with Lucha Corpi".
Or else you can download the mp3 file and listen to the show at another time.

A Book and a Chat with Jonathan Maxwell
Sometimes on "A Book and a Chat" a book about a something that is well known, yet my guest author still finds a new way to look at the subject. Today was one of those cases, as I presented "A Book and a Chat with Jonathan Maxwell".
In his bookbook "Murderous Intellectuals: German Elites and the Nazi SS", Jonathan Maxwell sets himself two daunting and urgent tasks—to explain why the Holocaust occurred and to prevent future genocides. In doing so, he takes the reader from the minutest of details about individual Nazis to grandiose narratives about human nature, psychology and civilizati.
In a fasinating show, Jonathon explained how his love for writing and for history had lead him onto a trail of dscovery as he wrote Murderous Intellectuals.
"Murderous Intellectuals: German Elites and the Nazi SS", is packed with insight into the minds, personalities, and the moral compass of the German elites and the Nazi SS. His writing graphically details the results of bigotry, morbid sadism, and the seductive nature of an evil influenced by ethnic hatred, dysfunction, greed, and a hunger for power.

A Book and a Chat with Anne Vincent
Today's guest on "A Book and a Chat" is co-author of the inspirational book "The Way to Stillness" Anne Vincent.
Anne along with her mother Gayle share a unique approach to connecting with others at a deep level, offering a practical guide that anyone might use as a manual on their spiritual journey.
"The Way to Stillness" began in 1996 encouraged by clients and at the request of the Spiritual Journeys Class (a program my mother started 27 years ago) at First Presbyterian Church, Nashville, TN.
The book tells the story of how Gayle followed her dreams and emerged with an amazing process they call "The Love Motif". On her journey, she encounters Viktor Frankl, Mother Teresa, and other great souls and brings that ability to transform a human life through the power of love.
From numerous notes and recording the book has come together over a period of time, showing a reader that if they connect with their inner stillness and practice the love motif, in their lives, all things are possible for them.
During the entertaining thirty minutes of the show, Anne shared with us much not only about how the book came about and some of the issues in producing "The Way to Stillness", as well as her hopes for how the book can help readers of all faiths and nations to find“stillness” in their own lives.
As I mentioned on during the radio show, I am sure the book will spread the story, and beliefs of Gayle and Anne around the world, sharing and helping with many.
I am sure this is not the last we will hear of Anne Vincent.
So why not sit back and enjoy thirty minutes of “A Book and a Chat with Anne Vincent” or else download the mp3 file and listen at your own convenience.

A Book and a Chat with Judith Graves
I was pleased to have another one of the 2k10 authors on my show today that is the group of writers whose maiden novel is coming out in two thousand and ten.
Today on "A Book and a Chat" my guest is Judith Graves talking to us about her life and her debut novel "Under My Skin". In addition to writing YA fiction, Judith is a singer, songwriter, and makes daytime appearances as a library technician, which helps with insatiable desire for reading enabling her to devour at least two books a week… in the reading sense that is.
As we learned during the show her fist book in the “Skinned” series, “Under My Skin”, was released in March by Leap Books, where she has also collaborated with author, Kitty Keswick, on the Origins series.
During a thoroughly interesting and entertaining sixty minutes of “A Book and a Chat” Judith shared with us how her writing experiences have wound through the poetry, song, short story paths to this first book of a trilogy. Through the show we not only learned about what lead to Judith writing “Under My Skin” but her steps along the road to publication have been helped by critic groups and now the 2K10 group of authors.
We even heard how Judith along with some of these other authors will be at the BEA in New York next month.
“Under My Skin” when asked to be described in three words, Judith stated “Power, Temptation, Choices”. As we heard during the show, it is a book that covers many aspects characters and indeed creatures, a novel that I’m sure will be a great hit leaving many waiting for the second and final book in the series.
The show was as normal full of interest and humor, covering such items such as Ann of Green Gables fighting zombie potatoes, how a joint critique and exercise group might help authors”, and what is it about seven minutes past nine?
So why not sit back and share a really interesting sixty minute show, or else download the mp3 file and listen to the show at your own convenience.

A Book and a Chat with Swati Avasthi
Swati Avasthi was my guest of today's A Book and a Chat, one of the wonderful group of authors who have there debut novel in 2010.
Her novel “Split” is a powerful story, centering on a teenage victim of domestic violence, something, as we heard from Sawti, and discussed in some details she has some knowledge of. Not to her personally I might add, but from her days coordinating at a domestic violence legal clinic.
While there are specific incidents that inspired the story even shaped the way she conceived of the book. It also enabled her to put faces on what she felt was more like an abstract problem. Swati explained during the show, that working with such victims she’d found It was incredibly moving --- both inspiring and heartbreaking.
During the show we learned how Swati had from the age of five wanted to write, and how, after the birth of her first child she’d gone back to writing currently completing her MFA at the University of Minnesota.
As well as her book “Split” in a very entertaining sixty minute show, we also heard about her work along with Heather Bouwman in The Second Story Reading Series. This is a bi-monthly series giving voice to new young adult and middle grade authors, by pairing them with an established author at presentations.
From abuse to Hanna Montana, from emotional relationships to her new work "Bidden", the show covered all areas, as Swathi Avasthi was my guest on today’s thoroughly entertaining “A Book and a Chat”

A Book and a Chat with U.L. Harper
My guest on the show today has come a long way since teachers told him he could not be allowed to take a creative writing class. U.L. Harper has come a long way since those days. His current novel "The Flesh Statue" shows just how far.
U.L. went to college for journalism, getting literary feet wet at UCLA (University of Cypress Lincoln Avenue). His writing developed, as U.L shared with us, through the realms of a part time slam poet, moving around different cities cursing at the audience in the name of art and style. From there his writing continued as Editor in Chief for the Cypress Chronicle.
"The Flesh Statue" is a novel that touches many if life’s issues, many of which U.L shared with us during the show, from Alzheimer’s, which leaves the books main characters Langely’s Grandfather sitting like a statue made of flesh (hence the book title).
Subjects such as abortion, abuse, death, graffiti, neighborhood watch groups and the police fill the pages of this interesting, entertaining and poignant novel. As “The Flesh Statue” follows Langley on this search for answers, and the array of characters he meets along the way.
As U.L shared during the show, there is another novel in the pipe line and I’m sure we’ll hear pleny more about my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat with U.L. Harper"

A Book and a Chat with Michelle and Trish - "Book Blogger Convention"
There is not normally a show on a Sunday, but sometimes when you have a special guest or you are talking about a special even you just have to put an extra show. Tonights show was one of those special events.
My guests tonight on "A Book and a Chat" were Michelle (Galley Smith) and Trish (Hey Lady Whatcha Readin’), two of the people behind a wonderful event being held in New York in May of this year.
These two ladies along with Amy (My Friend Amy), Natasha (Maw Books), Nicole (Linus’s Blanket), Pam (Mother Reader), Rebecca (The Book Lady’s Blog) are the powers behind this the first annual “BOOK BLOGGER CONVENTION”.
The event was first announced to the blogging community back at the start of this year, though word had already escaped that on Friday May 28th, 2010 in New York City the first annual Book Blogger Convention will commence.
As we heard during the show, this was just the start, as the event got more and more exposure, the numbers of those wanting to attend grow. Being recognized and officially affiliating with the BEA (Book Expo America) enabled the Book Blogger Convention will be held directly at the Jacob Javits Center alongside BEA .
Providing more space, contacts with authors, and being able to bundle a joint badge for both the Bea and the BBC (not the English one but the Book Blogger Convention).
A Michelle and Trish shared during this fascination show; the event has just grown, with some of the hardest parts being to actually choose the various panelists and moderators for the event. These will cover subjects from “Marketing” to “Professionalism and Ethics in Blogging”. As well as these panels and guests Trish and Michelle also shared with us during the show that Maureen Johnson would be the keynote speaker for this first annual Book Blogger Convention.
Maureen Johnson is the author of books such as Suite Scarlett and 13 Little Blue Envelopes. A frequent blogger and a regular on the social media scene Ms. Johnson will also give participants an insider’s view of the publishing industry and its relationship with digital media.
As well as the actual BBC, there will now also be a chance for authors, bloggers, publishers and anyone who happens to be at BEA that day to meet at the “The Book Blogger Convention Reception”. This will be on Thursday May 27th from 4-6pm at the Jacob K. Javits Center (room to be announced later). It is open to anybody who wants to attend, costing $20 for which you get snacks, networking and chance to meet cool authors and bloggers alike.
As we chatted through an enjoyable hour about the event, it was obvious to see that this will be one trip to New York that even I’m not going to miss. Just meeting bloggers, authors and people from the industry, being able to share the knowledge and experience across all subjects and genres, will I’m sure be a chance not to miss.
So check out http://bookbloggerconvention.com, for all the details about this great event.
If you head for Jacob Javits Center in New York on May 28th (Registration will begin at 7:30am, and the convention itself will start at 9:00am) I for one, will see you there.

A Book and a Chat with Kathi Macias
It was really good to have my special guest making a return visit on today's "A Book and a Chat". Kathi Macias proved a very popular guest upon her previous visit, and it was great to hear what this wonderful author has been up to since her last appearance on the show.
Kathi is a multi-award winning author of almost thirty books, ghost writing several others along the way. Also known as "Easy Writer" for her and her husband's love of riding their Harley, something which as we found out during the show, has been restricted with Kathi having five books coming out this year.
During the truly entertaining hour long show, Kathi shared with us all about her new "Extreme Devotion Fiction Series" the first two books from the so far four book series being launched this month. The first two books are "NO GREATER LOVE" based in South Africa, and "MORE THAN CONQUERORS" based in Mexico. These are to be followed by RED INK based in China (Oct 2010) and PEOPLE OF THE BOOK based in Saudi Arabia (Early 2011). During the show Kathi shared with us all about what lead to this series of books being developed, moving her into international fiction along the way. We went through each book and how it had evolved and what knowledge Kathi had learnd and shared along the way to producing, what I am sure will be a hugely popular series of book for this talented writer.
Not only is Kathi producing this set of book for 2010, she has also co-authored with Susan Wales "VALERIA'S CROSS" which comes out towards later this year.
That not being enough for this lady, we learned that Kathi will be sharing some of her secrets with a writers help podcast in June.

A Book and a Chat with George Earl Parker
Moving from Hertfordshire to the USA, into music, has just written a book... No today's show was not about me, but about somebody who has done these things and much more, today's guest on "A Book and a Chat" was George Earl Parker.
As we found out during the interview George's first success in the world of writing earned him a large amount of chocolate, when he was runner up in writing contest sponsored by Cadburys at the age of around ten. George was designer and director of the short film “Yellow Submarine Sandwich,” included in Eric Idle’s pseudo-documentary of a band called the Rutles, Parker received accolades, awards, and a showing at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. leading George himself to move across the pond, from England to first New York and latterly California. His art has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the country, and three of his songs have shown up on the European Country Music Association charts.
Now we are seeing yet another side to this multi-talented artist with his debut novel "Vampyre Blood - Eight Pints of Trouble" As George shared through the show the book is not your traditional "Vampire" novel, so don't expect a version of "Twilight". Instead George has produced a novel that will as one of the reviewers put... "Its humor will brighten any day and its perspective will lighten your heart. It’s silly, it’s endearing, it’s very human, and it will make you laugh out loud."
"Vampyre Blood - Eight Pints of Trouble" is a book that does just that, and shows yet another side of my talented guest on today's show "George Earl Parker.
So why not sit back and listen to an enjoyable forty-five minutes as George Earl Parker in my guest on today's "A Book and a Chat".

A Book and a Chat with Bruce Sheiman
My guest today on "A Book and a Chat was Bruce Sheiman chatting about his beleives and his book which came out last year called "An Atheist Defends Religion".
Bruce is an atheist, or as he calls himself an aspiring theist. But he thinks religion is great. In fact, he thinks it's better than great. He thinks people have produced their greatest civilizations and achieved their greatest humanity through religion. And he thinks his fellow atheists who say religion is poison are being intellectually dishonest charlatans. And, best of all, he's got the guts to say so.
Bruce explained during the show that the very loud atheists writing books don't speak for the all people with such beleives. Bruce explained how he's sympathetic to religious aspirations, just hasn't experienced God himself. This is what lead him to write "An Atheist Defends Religion".
The show covered many grounds and layers of both hunman nature and religius believes, from how the world was fromed to the advantahe of having a jewish/Christian parentage.
So why not sit back and listen to a fasinating thirty minutes as I chat with Bruce Sheiman on todays "A Book and a Chat".

A Book and a Chat with "Michele Cameron"
My guest on today's show was born just down the road from me here in Connecticut before graduating to become an English teacher, which she still is to this present day. Today's guest is the one and only Michele Cameron (that's Michele with one "L").
Michele, was a popular guest when she appeared on the show previously, so far had four books published, including her latest novel novel "Unclear and Present Danger". Her books have always been popular, covering many aspects of life each one though romance based, always covers some other part of every day living. This ranges from international marriage, to health care issues.
Once again Michele proved a great guest sharing incites on both life and her writing, along with what she is currently working on right now. From her books "Moments of Clarity" , "Never Say Never"
, when "Lightning Strikes", to her latest novel each novel has grown in stature and popularity. We also heard about the issues she's had with book titles, which is why her current work is "shhhhh" secret.
A book and a chat with Michele Cameron is always a fun filled show, a must for any reader looking for a great thirty minutes broadcast to learn from and to share
So why not listen now or else down load the link and listen to the show later.
