A Book and a Chat with Dr Diane Hassan

I get asked a lot about coming from England to America, how far it is to travel, time it takes, the fact I haven’t lost my accent and even what I think of America. But for me it was just 3000miles and at least the language is the same, okay more or less the same. But imagine how it was for my guest Dr Diane Hassan travelling from South Alabama to Bagdad about 10,000 miles to a totally different country and climate. This was back in the 70’s before Saddam, she met her now husband at University and moved to Iraq to be with him.

Diane’s travels, her life in Iraq and her and her families eventual escape after an attempted assassination of her husband during Saddam's purge following Desert Storm are detailed in her book “ANGELS AMONG US. . .EVEN IN IRAQ”.

Diane’s early days were one of constant learning; she was American wife of a prominent member of Saddam Hussein's political hierarchy, studying medicine, her husband, protected from perhaps some of the harsher side to Iraq in those early days. Those early days changed as Saddan came to power, stories of people going missing, worries about saying the wrong thing to the wrong person.

About “Angels Among Us… Even in Iraq" (taken from Amazon)

Angels Among Us . . . Even in Iraq is a fascinating story of love and survival, of how people can overcome any obstacle to fulfill a dream. In a highly entertaining fashion, the American wife of a prominent member of Saddam Hussein's political hierarchy chronicles her life in Iraq until she and her family dramatically escape after an attempted assassination of her husband during Saddam's purge following Desert Storm.

Dr. Taha Al Baka, a former Iraqi government minister, comments, "If you are among those Americans who care about their democratic freedoms, constitutional government and due process of law, then you should read this book. You will have a greater appreciation of your country and a greater resolve to guard the basic principles on which it was founded."

The story took over seven years to write, but is obviously written with passion, from her own experiences, not from second hand information about the situation in Iraq.

As Diane shared with us while telling the story of her husband’s escape from assignation, there are angels everywhere, and many not dressed in white playing harps, they appear in all places at many different times, under Saddam’s time of terror on Iraq.

As one reviewer wrote of the book…

ANGELS AMONG US is a way of holding a spotlight not just on Iraq but our search for good in a world where we might be prone to believe it exists. Through this book and the journey that Dianne and her family were able to go through and endure we are able to see that there is goodness and love everywhere.

A Book and a Chat with Peter Burke

Peter Burke, my guest today, is not only a fellow English author, also a fellow member of “The Old Ashmoleans” rugby club, and I’m pleased to say friend. Due to be on the show a few weeks ago, when issues with Skype kept him from appearing, so it was good to have him join tonight’s “A Book and a Chat”.

Also interested in history, when Pete moved to Wales and then Yorkshire that his work as a master stone mason, touching the very stones that ancient Brittan’s might have used thousands of years ago, enhanced his interest and he started making up stories from those days and telling them to his children.

Years later, following a visit to Crete and the puzzle of a famous Bronze Age artifact, Pete found himself setting out his own voyage of becoming a writer. I chance meeting with Howard Davis, a well know figure in the publishing world in 2006, eventually lead to the publication of his book “The Promise” the first novel in a trilogy.

About “The Promise” (Taken from Amazon)

A routine business trip to Egypt ends in terror for father of two, Robert Batson when he is abducted and held captive in appalling conditions, for what seems like a lifetime. Then, following his unexpected release, to help come to terms with his ordeal, he decides to trace his ancestry as a form of therapy. And so, begins his long and compelling journey that takes him back to ancient civilization on his quest to discover the lost treasure of the Anassi people and, ultimately, the secret of the promise.

This early success has now been followed with the second book of the series “The Kings Sword”, the sequel to the 'The Promise' sees Jethro Battson plunged into a quest for the Royal sword of an ancient civilization - the Anassi people.

About “The Kings Sword” (Taken from Pete’s Webb Site)

Seemingly living as a donw-and-out, troubled by distressing family issues, Jethro unwittingly involves Sarah Deane, a mature history student living on a barge near Waltham Abbey, in a search to trace the sword of his ancestors and the secret of the promise.

As interwoven events switch between three time periods, the mysterious vision of a young man with magical healing powers appears throughout. But who is he, and why is the Battson family' protected by an ancient promise made back in the bronze age?

Many have praised Pete’s writing calling it colorful historical reading that is hard to put down.

As one reviewer wrote of “The Kings Sword”

“The second book in the 'Promise' trilogy, and this is story telling at its best. A gripping tale that see's the Battson family's seemingly fruitless efforts to find the old sword gather pace drawing in new characters that Burke has written in such a way that makes you feel like you are a part of their world and experiences in such a way that draws you into this wonderful story. “

During an entertaining show we not only learned about the final book of the Trilogy, but also the interest and details of the plot that King Harold did not die at the Battle of Hastings but was indeed whisked away to die later of old age… You’ll have to listen to the show to find out more about that one..

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining thirty minutes with my guest Peter Burke

A Book and a Chat with Donna Fletcher Crow

Donna Fletcher Crow my guest today on "A Book and a Chat" has always wanted to be a writer, well rather a reader and that has since turned into writing, not only that but she managed to find time along the way to participated in competitive riding, winning the titles of Snake River Stampede Rodeo Queen in 1959 and Miss Rodeo Idaho in 1960 and she was a runner up in the Miss Rodeo America 1960 competition.

However all the time she was destined to follow the literary path, going from short adventure stories staring herself and of course illustrated in the 6th grade to becoming an award winning author with 36 books behind her. These books cover subjects from cooking to romance stories though she is best known for her historical novels, including the award winning “Glastonbury”, an Arthurian grail search epic covering 15 centuries of English history.

After a few years respite from the publishing treadmill, Donna is back with a vengeance with three different series of books on the go, “The Monastery Murders”, “Elizabeth and Richard Mystery’s” and “Lord Andrew Series”.

Each of her series and indeed her books are full of historical information as well as wonderful stories, mostly they are set in Britain, be is England of with books such as “'The Fields of Bannockburn” in Scotland, and as Donna shared with us, there will soon be one set in Wales.

About “A Darkly Hidden Truth” (The Monastery Murders)” (Taken from Donna’s Web Site)

This book is the second in the Monastery Murders series following her successful first novel “A Very Private Grave”, where we learn of Felicity Howard, a young American studying for the Anglican priesthood at the College of the Transfiguration in Yorkshire, is devastated when she finds her beloved Father Dominic bludgeoned to death and Father Antony, her church history lecturer, soaked in his blood
.
In this second book… Felicity can't possibly help Father Antony find the valuable missing icon. She's off to become a nun. And then her impossible mother turns up unexpectedly. And a good friend turns up murdered...

Breathtaking chase scenes, mystical worship services, dashes through remote water-logged landscapes, the wisdom of ancient holy women, and the arcane rites of The Knights Hospitaller keep the pages turning. Will Felicity choose the veil - or Antony?

With books being written and loved in so many series and by so many readers, and as we learned her masterpiece “Glastonbury” soon to be available in EBook format. I am sure the name Donna Fletcher Crow will on peoples “must read” list for many years to come

A Book and a Chat with C.Y. Bourgeois

C.Y Bourgeois (Carla) has always been an avid reader, but it was not until the death of her father that she decided to put pen to paper, or rather fingers to keyboard to produce a book. Originally she was going to write something dedicated to her father, but struggling with exactly what to create she instead produced her debut mystery thriller “Visions of You”.

As we heard through the show it did not end up quite as she set out writing the novel, as the main character changed during the writing to become “Shelby Leight is a wise-cracking, lighthearted teenager, looking forward to a fun-filled senior year in high school”. Using her own own knowledge of Alaska and the town of Palmer, Carla has created a debut novel that as one reviewer put it…

“This book was a wonderful read! You can picture the town and characters and feel like you are there without the story getting bogged down with too much detail. It is a quick read because the end of each chapter leaves you with something that makes you want to keep going and find out what will happen next. The writing style well-suited to young adult and adult readers. This is an excellent freshman effort and I am happy to hear that the sequel is already in the works!”

About “Visions of You”: (taken from books web site)

It’s 1975 in Palmer, a peaceful, sleepy little town in the heart of Southcentral Alaska. Shelby Leight is finally a high school senior and looking forward to having the time of her life. But, as Robert Burns wrote, “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” Instead of having a fun-filled year of football games, parties, and the prom, one of Shelby’s best friends is brutally murdered.

During the course of the investigation Shelby falls in love for the first time only to have her new boyfriend reveal a shocking family secret. She experiences a spiritual awakening – visions of her dead friend, Larita – and warnings from the other side that the terrifying serial killer is coming – for another one of their friends. The police and FBI are searching for clues, but the killer is still out there and he’s headed their way.

So far the book has received a great feedback…

This book gives realistic details of the town and makes you feel like you can see it. Just reading the details of the story made me want to read it right away. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down! Bourgeois did a great job of drawing the reader in and making you want to keep reading until the end. I can't wait for the sequel!

Well reviewer, her follow up novel “Visions of Mortality” is already underway, and as mentioned at the start of the blog, the book dedicated to her father that started Carla down the writing path, that also has now been produced in her story “The Concrete Nome”.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining thirty minutes with my guest C.Y. Bourgeois

A Book and a Chat with Steve Berry

I recently read a quote about the author on today’s “A Book and a Chat” that “If Ian Fleming and Doris Kearns Goodwin had a lovechild, it would be Steve Berry”, my guest on today’s show.

It is always a pleasure to have not just such a famous author on the show but also as Steve makes the so show enjoyable and we always learn something new.

As we have learned before from Steve it was not always success for him. Originally a practicing attorney, Steve went through twelve years from the day he started writing to the day he sold his first book. Twelve years and 85 rejections (over five different editions) before he finally sold a manuscript. It was more that the world changed during those years, and what perhaps was not the fashion suddenly came back into vogue.

From that start Steve has gone from strength to strength, he now has 14 million books in print, which have been translated into 40 languages and sold in 51 countries.

From his first book “The Amber Room” through his Cotton Malone series which include such bestselling titles as “The Templar Legacy” and “The Jefferson Key”.

As we learned last year, Cotton is taking a much needed break with Steve’s 2012 novel, though fear not, as we learned he’s back in 2013 with a fresh adventure to do with the Tudors and set in England…

While Cotton has taken his break, a new character has appeared in “The Columbus Affair” in the form of former Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Tom Sagan.

About “The Columbus Affair”: (Taken from Steve Web Site)

He was called by many names—Columb, Colom, Colón—but we know him as Christopher Columbus. Many questions about him exist. Where was he born, raised, and educated. Where he died. How he discovered the New World.

None have ever been properly answered.

And then there is the greatest secret of all.

Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Tom Sagan has written hard-hitting articles from hot spots around the world. But when a controversial report from a war-torn region is exposed as a fraud, his professional reputation crashes and burns. Now he lives in virtual exile—haunted by bad decisions and the shocking truth he can never prove: that his downfall was a deliberate act of sabotage by an unknown enemy. But before Sagan can end his torment with the squeeze of a trigger, fate intervenes in the form of an enigmatic stranger with a request that cannot be ignored.

Zachariah Simon has the look of a scholar, the soul of a scoundrel, and the zeal of a fanatic. He also has Tom Sagan’s estranged daughter at his mercy. Simon desperately wants something only Sagan can supply, the key to a 500 year-old mystery—a treasure with explosive political significance in the modern world. For both Simon and Sagan the stakes are high, the goal intensely personal, the consequences of opposing the other potentially catastrophic. On a perilous quest from Florida to Vienna to Prague and finally to the mountains of Jamaica, the two men square off in a dangerous game. Along the way, both of their lives will forever be altered---and everything we know about Christopher Columbus will change.

The book is a standalone thriller that is launched on May 15th however early reviews such as...

“There is great suspense, betrayal, lies, murders, and all of the other highlights that mark the Berry books.”

“if you like thrillers, particularly those with a historical background. The pace is fast, the history seems mostly factual, and the characters are well drawn.”

We also learned that not just next year’s book is written but the year after and even the one for 2014 are planned and underway.

Steve Berry
is one of those authors who have readers counting the days down until his next book is released, and I count myself as one of those readers.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining sixty minutes with my guest Steve Berry

A Book and a Chat with James Straight

James Straight is my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”. He always knew he wanted to fly, since his early years watching planes land and take off from the small airstrip next to his family farm in rural mizurrah (Missouri).

From these early years where his favorite smells were fresh cut grass and warm aviation exhaust he migrated via becoming the youngest recruit to graduate Special Forces Training Group to the dreamed career in aviation.

Thirty years later after a distinguished career as a professional pilot, which included flying over one hundred different types and categories of airplanes, James embarked on a new career which has ultimately lead to him becoming an author.

His debut book “Weird Missouri” is one of the “Show-Me State” series of offbeat travel guides, that shows readers where to find local legends, craziest characters, oddball curiosities and bizarre roadside attractions. You’ll learn about “Goober Burgers” and “brain sandwiches” as well as meet characters such as “Catfish George” and a farmer in Southern Missouri and his UFO parties.

His new career started James has now gone on to write an adventure novel “Déjà vu All Over Again” an action packed adventure taking place in the final 57 hours prior to the calendar turning 12-21-2012.

About “DejaVu All Over Again” (Taken from James web site)

It had long been debated that the end of days for planet earth was set in concrete as December 21, 2012. Mathematical savant Ana Christensen was merely following her instincts when working a theorem in a direction and style that could never have been accepted by traditional mathematicians. As a result she stumbled upon an ancient Mayan creation, a time loop beginning in 3114BC and ending on the long contested twenty first century date. In a dynamic race against time, Ana and her male compatriot battle the forces of individual evil, bureaucracy, paramilitary mercenaries, and most powerful of all…destiny.

With another book “Thomas Jefferson is Missing” ready to be launched at the start of 2013 I am sure his books will continue to fly off the books shelves.

A Book and a Chat with Germaine Shames

Germaine Shames has been there, done it, and as they say, “got the tee shirt”. She has visited and written in six continents and has plans to make it seven. She has, for as long as she can remember had the inner narrator whispering in her ear, and while other children were reading The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, she was grappling with the erotic undercurrents of Anna Karenina and Madame Bovary.

Germaine abandoned a successful corporate career and devoted myself to writing full-time, first as a journalist and correspondent, and later as a fiction writer, focusing on novels and screenplays. Her novel “Between Two Deserts” launched her on the path of a successful author, receiving much praise as well as several awards.

About “Between Two Deserts” (taken from Amazon)

Jerusalem lies at the end of an old Roman road, a city swathed in light and sorrow.
Coming to Jerusalem to fulfill her grandfather's dying wish, Eve Cavell finds herself poised on the fault line of three worlds—Muslim, Christian, and Jewish. Inspired rather than frightened by the ghosts and warring children that surround her, Eve emerges from mourning to a life larger for its dangers. The lost and alone—an Australian street preacher, an apathetic Palestinian, an alienated Israeli investigator, and others—find a way to her door. Soon she attracts the attention of Mozes Koenig, an elderly Hungarian author in search of a heroine. Eve, with her lodestar eyes and solitary dance, captivates the old man's imagination, and together they create an opus to humanity in a city made of stone.

Now after many years of research and investigation, Germaine has followed up with what I would call a blockbuster of a novel. “You, Fascinating You”.

About “You, Fascinating You”:

In the final weeks of 1938, in the shadow of Kristallnacht and imminent war, a heartsick Italian maestro wrote a love song called "Tu Solamente Tu."

Its lyrics lamented his forced separation from his wife, the Hungarian ballerina Margit Wolf, in the wake of Mussolini's edict banishing foreign Jews from Italy. The song, first recorded by Vittorio de Sica in 1939, catapulted to the top of the Hit Parade and earned the composer the moniker the "Italian Cole Porter." The German version, "Du Immer Wieder Du," would be performed by Zarah Leander, the foremost film star of the German Reich, and its English counterpart, "You, Fascinating You," by the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band.

Twenty-two years would pass before the maestro and his ballerina again met face-to-face.
You, Fascinating You begins as a backstage romance and ends as an epic triumph of the human spirit.

This book covers so many different topics, from romance to ballet, from the holocaust to music, as we heard during the show many have already stated what a great film it would make and I add my voice to that group. It is a book for all, a cross between “The Red Shoes” and “Europa, Europa” that will touch your heartstrings.

As one reviewer put it…

“The epic drama expected on the ballet stage is dwarfed by the tragic real life events of her ballerina heroine, Margit Wolf. Penetrating descriptions of political brutality and the prepossession of romantic love, an ever present theme in classical ballet, make for a page-turning, impelling read.”

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining show as I chat to today's guest Germaine Shames

A Book and a Chat with Ava Kaufman

Ava Kaufman, my guest of today’s “A Book and a Chat” had it all, a classically trained dancer who had performed at Carnegie Hall and the Metropolitan Opera House. She had a series of successful businesses living the Beverly Hill life with her and her football hero husband lived in a multimillion dollar marble mansion, where many of the rich and famous we called friends.

Then in 2008 her hands started to become unbearably itchy, especially around her knuckles. Her Beverly Hills dermatologist, whom she saw regularly for Botox and Restylane injections, put her on ointment for eczema and psoriasis. Stating that it was more than likely stress related due to Ava going through a divorce as well as several new business ventures.

Over the next few months things got worse, her nails started to go black and though she was put on steroids not once did the doctor order a blood test. Things however were far from fine, and eventually she was diagnosed with Dermatomyositis, an auto immune disease. Weeks later her heart died, and for ten days she was kept alive by various machines, though eventually through her own strength of belief and a heart transplant as well as the love of her daughter Jade she survived.

Her book “Heartless” tells how through a serious of miracles she regained a life even though she lost most of her former life she has grown with the love of family and friends into a better person.

After her recovery, Ava volunteered at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and to this date Ava has helped hundreds of candidates, transplant recipients and their families on their transplant journey. With her indomitable spirit, Ava has inspired many, that they too, can overcome anything.

In 2011, Ava established Ava’s Heart, a 501©3 non-profit organization, which provides support for transplant recipients and candidates with limited means or no insurance, ensuring they receive medication and financial aid, during their transplant journey. Ava’s Heart gives candidates, recipients and their families the support and care they need from beginning to end. Ava’s Heart was formed with the intent of "giving back to others" who are on the same journey as Ava
As Gloria Gaynor wrote about Ava…

“Ava is not just a lovely person; she is one of the most courageous people I’ve ever met. I’ve known her decades and she is the consummate survivor!”

This book will take you through the before and during and the after, lead you along the road, telling the human side of a heart transplant operation.

A Book and a Chat with Joel M Andre

Today on “A Book and a Chat” with have another returning guest in the form of mystery writer Joel M Andre. Joel was a guest back in late December of 2010, and it was interesting to hear what new works he has been creating.

Originally a writer of poetry including his own collection of poems “Pray the Rain Never Ends”, however all the time there was a darker side of Joel waiting to hit the pages. His first dark and slightly tongue in cheek novel “A Death at the North Pole", where he created a dark world among the death of Kris Kringle. It was also the introduction to his character Lauren Bruni.

His early success was followed by such novels as “Kill 4 Me” a story in which a woman is haunted by a vengeful spirit through text messages and instant messaging. He also branched out into the Fantasy realms with collection “The Pentacle of Light”. A tale dealing with five major races battling for control of Earth, and the acceptance of their God.

Lauren Bruni was not forgotten though and returned in “The Return” and now appears again in his new series “The Black Chronicles: Cry of the Fallen”.

About : “The Black Chronicles: Cry of the Fallen” (taken from Amazon)

On a warm summer afternoon, in Northern Arizona, a double homicide stains the ground with blood. Detectives are called out to handle the investigation, each plagued with their own internal demons, and aren't prepared for what they are about to find. Detective Lauren Bruni, faces a world of darkness and evil, as a demonic force begins to leash an attack on a small town. As the stakes begin to rise, so does the stunning truth, that not even Lauren can imagine? In a world where her life had started to fall apart, she must pick up the pieces and push forward in an effort to save those that she loves the most. Joel M. Andre takes the Horror genre and pushes the boundaries in a tale full of suspense, dark comedy and genuine horror.

With further adventures planned for Detective Lauren Bruni and more of the fantasy saga, the name Joel M Andre will be one we’ll hear a lot more about.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining thirty minutes with my guest Joel M Andre
