A Book and a Chat with Rudy Mazzocchi

My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is Rudy A. Mazzocchi author of the medical thriller “Equity of Evil”.

Rudy is best known for being a medical device and biotechnology entrepreneur, inventor, and angel investor, with a history of starting new technology ventures throughout the U.S. and Europe. He has authored more than 50 patents in the field of medical technology, including areas such as cardiology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology and biomechanics.

He describes himself as more of a “start-up” entrepreneur who was fortunate to develop the skills to raise the necessary capital to fund the development of innovations from concept through market release.
With a background which includes insight into some of the newest innovations in healthcare and also enables him to work with some of the most brilliant researchers, scientists and physicians in the industry, you know any medical thriller will not only be entertaining but thought provoking. So it is with his debut book “Equity of Evil” the first of what promises to be a trilogy of such novels.

The book is based on his  first-hand experiences in reviewing and/or participating in the development of some of the most controversial and cutting-edge medical technologies. These include starting one of the first embryonic stem cell companies to designing the world’s only electronic, auto-focusing implantable lens for inside the eye; (similar to the one in the Terminator or the Six Million Dollar Man – depending upon your generation)!

While his book deals with the controversial subjects of abortion and genetic engineering Rudy manages not to take either a Pro-Life or Pro-Choice position when using the abortion theme as a backdrop of this story. Neutrality on such a controversial topic is very difficult, but he believes that regardless of your political or moral position, the reader will find support in the words and actions of the book’s characters for whatever perspective they might have. The fact that, as he shared during the program he’s had encouraging emails from not only both side of the fence but the church as well shows how well he has managed his neutrality
.
About "Equity of Evil”:

In hopes of a quick and lucrative return during harsh economic times, a Venture Capital Fund makes a risky investment to start a challenging new business that appears capable of reaching profitability with modest capital requirements. The real challenge: optimizing one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in the World — abortion — by replacing oftentimes seedy and life-threatening back room procedures with clean, safe and dignified alternatives.

An unfolding world of deceit, rape, human trafficking and assassination becomes deeply personal as Roman’s sole love interest secretly uses one of his new abortion services to end her own untimely pregnancy. When she disappears, his frantic search becomes a hellish nightmare that grows worse by the hour.

Based on true events, this bold novel involves some of the world’s oldest and most emotional—therefore controversial—issues, including abortion and human trafficking. At the core of each matter is man’s predisposition to control and take ownership of the human spirit for the sake of profit and personal gain. Such pursuit for the equity of evil is the force that drags Roman through a dark and brutal world that most people would deny exists.

This debut novel is a politically compelling, suspenseful and reality-cutting Medical Thriller that will challenge the reader’s personal views on capitalism, ethics, and the basic morality of his fellow man. It will drag you through a dark and brutal new world where human life becomes the actual equity of evil.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining thirty minutes with my guest Rudy Mazzocchi.

A Book and a Chat with Dr Allen Malnak

Dr. Allen Malnak is today’s guest on “A Book and a Chat” talking about his debut novel “Hitler’s Silver Box”.

Dr Malnak after a long career in the medical profession retired to Florida, there he read one day about a course in writing fiction where Hollis Alpert, a well known novelist, biographer, short story editor and movie critic was to be the teacher.

Dr Malnak took these classes for a couple of years learning the writing trade through various assignments often ending up in the form of short stories.

One such subject was titled “A Silver Box.” And for some reason, Dr Malnak decided to write it about a concentration camp prisoner at the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp who was forced by a Nazi colonel to make a silver box which would be a present for Adolph Hitler. Thus started the journey to “Hitler’s Silver Box

Perhaps it was not is strange for Dr Malnak to write about the such matters when you consider that when his Dad died of natural causes during the Second World War and immediately following the war, along with his late brother Lewis he began to try to track down his father’s European family. They wrote letters to everyone they could think of and after about a year received a detailed reply from the International Red Cross. Nazi records as well as witness reports indicated that all members of his dad’s family had been murdered either in or near Kovno or after transfer to a death camp. Every man, woman and child!... So, one entire side of my family was destroyed by the Nazis.

Hitler’s Silver Box” is not just about the war and what went on, it a wonderful novel that is full of tension with a rich plot with numerous twists and turns and a variety of different conflicts as well as an engaging love subplot.
The style of the novel is clear, the structure is skilled, and the ending is satisfying

About “Hitler’s Silver Box”(Taken from blogcritics.org book review)

Dr. Allen Malnak’s Hitler’s Silver Box is a compelling thriller that will keep the reader glued to the pages of the book until the book is finished.

Max Bloomberg, an old bookseller, living in one of Chicago’s affluent suburbs is brutally murdered. However, Max suffered a lot of trials and tribulations even before he was murdered. The killers burned all of his holy books and forced him to turn over the silver box. But he refuses to give it to them. So, they murder Max.

Bruce, Max’s nephew, learns about his uncle’s murder and is devastated. Bruce becomes suspicious of the unexpected nature of the murder and knows in his heart that foul play must have been involved. What even adds to Bruce’s suspicions is that he learns that Max has been cremated. But an orthodox Jew would never want to be cremated. Then in a real twist the uncle leaves Bruce a lot of money and property which makes Bruce himself a suspect.

Things get much more complicated when Bruce starts searching for the journal that his uncle left. The reader is then transported to 1945 when Max was a prisoner in a concentration camp. Innocent people were killed all over the place and Bruce discovers that he must find the Silver Box before it is too late. The secret document is hidden within it, and it could the save the world from Nazi resurgence.

I can see this being a huge hit for Dr Malnak, and as he shared with us, he left some lose ends to “Hitler’s Silver Box” which are already forming into a follow up novel.

As one reviewer wrote…

"The characters in Hitler's Silver Box are quite intriguing and well developed. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in reading of events of the Holocaust or to anyone looking for a gripping, fast-paced novel."--

They recommended the book, and so do I.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining thirty minutes with my guest Dr Allen Malnak.

A Book and a Chat with Sarvenaz Tash

In this month’s Library Media Connection magazine, which is aimed towards school librarians and whether or not books are good fits for their curriculum and collection, my guests book was ladled “"Full of adventure and mystery, this novel is sure to bring out the explorer in every reader."

After listening to today’s “A Book and a Chat” I am sure it is a book that will find its way into many library.

Sarvenaz Tash, pronounced Sar (like the first part of Sara) – ve (rhymes with meh) – naz (rhymes with ‘cuz... yet I still had issues saying it..
Was born in Tehran, Iran and grew up on Long Island, NY. She received her BFA in Film and Television from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. This means she got to spend most of college running around and making movies (it was a lot of fun). She has dabbled in all sorts of writing including screenwriting, copywriting, and professional tweeting. She currently lives in Brooklyn, NY where all the streets are laid out in a delightfully simple grid system, which is a good thing for as we learned she is not very good with directions unlike “Goldenrod Moram” the hero of her debut book “The Mapmaker and the Ghost.”

About “The Mapmaker and the Ghost”

Goldenrod Moram loves nothing better than a good quest. Intrepid, curious, and full of a well-honed sense of adventure, she decides to start her own exploring team fashioned after her idols, the explorers Lewis and Clark, and to map the forest right behind her home.

This task is complicated, however, by a series of unique events—a chance encounter with a mysterious old lady has her searching for a legendary blue rose. Another encounter lands her in the middle of a ragtag gang of brilliant troublemakers. And when she stumbles upon none other than the ghost of Meriwether Lewis himself, Goldenrod knows this will be anything but an ordinary summer . . . or an ordinary quest

The book is a rollicking adventure full of great characters from Goldenrod, the intrepid explorer, who has the quest to map her town. Her little brother, who just wants to be brave enough for his sister to let him come along on her adventures, to a group of runaway kids called “the Gross Out Gang”, and of course the ghost…

The book has just enough danger to make you worry for their safety intermixed with humor ranging from slapstick of the Gross Out Gang with their gleefully disgusting habits and kids will adore to equally as intelligent and quirky interactions that any adult reader would enjoy.

The book is due out April 24th, if I were you I’d get an order for this book in now, no matter what your age as I can see this not only being a great hit, but to me "The Mapmaker and the Ghost" is also destined to appear on one form or other silver screen.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining sixty minutes with my guest Sarvenaz Tash.

A Book and a Chat with B.A. Chepaitis

I am pleased to say we have another welcome returning guest for tonight’s “A Book and a Chat” in the form of author B.A. or Barbara Chepaitis.

Barbara is the author of numerous books, including The Fear Principle, the critically praised Feeding Christine and These Dreams. As well as her first nonfiction book, books Feathers of Hope, about Berkshire Bird Paradise and the human interaction with birds.

Barbara started by sharing with us the latest news about Mitch the eagle that was rescued by Navy Seals in Afghanistan and now brought back to the US and is now settled in at the same Berkshire Bird Paradise featured in “Feathers of Hope”. We also learned that a new book about Mitch and his long journey from the battle field t across the many miles to USA and the sanctuary. Something to me that would make a great film (Disney are you listening?).

Barbara has also been adding to her Sci-fi / Paranormal books about Jaguar Addams in the form of her new novel “The Green Memory of Fear”. This book as we heard during another really entertaining program is very close to Barbara’s heart, forcing her to revisit that real incident, a very painful one of loss and trauma.

Though the material is profoundly dark in some places, it always struggles to move toward light because Jaguar is a woman who knows both light and dark in equal measure, and is determined to move through shadow toward light. As Alex, her cohort and would-be lover says to her, she turns poison into medicine. That’s who she is. What she does.

About “The Green Memory of Fear”:

On Prison Planetoid Three, Jaguar Addams uses her empathic gifts to make criminals face the fears that drive their heinous acts. Very few escape the telepathic web she weaves around them . . . until now. When Jaguar takes on a home planet assignment, investigating a psychiatrist on trial for abuse of a little boy, she finds a killer unlike any she’s faced before.

Dr. Senci’s psi skills are a match for her own, and unless she consents to do as he wants, he’ll use them to kill everyone she loves. Once she realizes who and what he really is, she leaves the Planetoid to go after him.

But Supervisor Alex Dzarny isn’t about to let her go it alone, even if it means losing his own life to save hers.

As a reviewer stated about “The Green Memory of Fear”:
“...this is SF at its realistic best.”

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining thirty minutes with my guest B.A. Chepaitis.

A Book and a Chat with John Roach

My guest today is John Roach, he tells how the idea for the UTOPIAN FRONTIERS FOUNDATION came many years ago while John was working as an Employee Relations Supervisor for a mining company located up North near the Alaskan panhandle. It was a hard rock mine operation located in the Coastal Mountain Range system of mountains. The mine site was located up in the mountains, near a huge field of glaciers. A tunnel led from the mill and habitation area, going under 3 mountains and 2 glaciers just to get to the ore body. And just a little bit of snow, how does 1000 inches of snow a year sound?

Upon his return to Toronto, John immediately had eye problems related to air pollution but that’s another story. He reconnected with his soon to be writing associate, Mike Parsons, and they picked up on mutual concerns, such as social/political/economic realities of the times. They discussed John’s experiences in a semi isolated corporate environment, lamented the condition of existing cities and related problems, and began to play “WHAT IF”.

From that came the idea of “UTOPIAN FRONTIERS FOUNDATION” and laterly a novel of the same name.

UTOPIAN FRONTIERS FOUNDATION is a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing multi-media works intended to educate and provoke meaningful discourse on global environmental concerns. Related themes explore the relationship between humankind and technology.

About “Utopian Frontiers(The Novel)

What if there was a secret city at work on finding answers to the survival of humanity? Technologies beyond your imagination; a city expanding, recruiting and evolving. There is no government, no money, no bosses, institutions, cars or roads; and age takes on new meaning. This "facility" is one big research product in and of itself, and nothing else quite ike it exists on this Earth.

This is the city that Erwin Sharp and his family are drawn into on the fringes of a national park. They fall headfirst down the rabbit hole into a world of space probes, cancer cures, and a core myth that defies belief. They soon realize that some doors are only meant to swing one way.

This is a parable of trust and hope--a flashing beacon of hope in a world hell-bent on destroying itself. It is ultimately a story of ambition, of owning up to life, showing up and trading up. In a story that is as controversial as it is reassuring, sometimes it is possible to find something you always hoped existed, and in finding it, you confront your own truth as much as that of the world you live in.

What is inside the mysterious Hall 8, and what does that have to do with Erwin? And how is water the mechanism of peace or destruction? Thick with adventure, revelations and twists, this story shows how what we accept is only that which we've been conditioned to accept, and why an ancient Mayan prophesy doesn't actually mean what you think.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining thirty minutes with my guest John Roach.

A Book and a Chat with Diane Tegarden

It is a welcome return for show number 450 to one of my earliest guests on “A Book and a Chat". Author of a wide range of subjects including: renewable energy, environmental concerns, holistic health, women’s issues, and Native Spirituality and now SCFI… Diane Tegarden.

Diane company FireWalker Publications Inc, was formed in 2004 to promote her passionate, original written works, materials, ideas and creations. She’s a regular contributor for two online content producers, Associated Content and Examiner.com.

Her first success came in 2004 with her book “Getting Out Of Limbo A Self Help Divorce Book For Women”, which provided step by step instructions on how to achieve financial and emotional independence in preparation for a divorce. This has gone on to be such a success, as Diane shared during the program it is now going into a second print under the new title “How to Escape a Bad Marriage”.

This publication lead to numerous radio and TV interviews as well as spreading her name among many online publications, not only about the books subject but also about her environmental concerns.

Now in turn it has become part of her new Sci-Fi novel “Anti-Vigilante and the Rips in Time”, when written it was set in the future but as we learned perhaps some of the thoughts, ideas and happening are already starting to come true…

About “Anti-Vigilante and the Rips in Time”:

Terrax, the Crystal Planet, is an exacting world.

A place where human physical contact is impossible and stepping outside is virtual suicide. The atmosphere is a hurricane of coriolis winds and deadly scattershowers, composed of toxic metals formed into whip-like threads kilometers long. Immense Ocean Domes cover over the toxic sludge where the oceans used to be.

The surface of Terrax is covered in crystalline structures, called the Hives, where only the upper crust lives. No one can survive the raw elements, all must reside inside buildings, vicariously living through virtual reality programming.

To believe the tales of “Olde Earth”, a place where clean water flowed from the sky, where the outdoor air was breathable, and edible food grew out of the ground? These were no more than nestling’s stories, ancient mythology from a distant Time.
Until the Rips in Time occurred…

What happens next changes Terrax forever.

As one review put it…

ANTI-VIGILANTE AND THE RIPS IN TIME is a fascinating science fiction novel where even in a world where life is lived vicariously through virtual reality, murder is commonplace and carried out with extreme emphasis on brutality.

It never fails to amaze me -- the mind of the writers of science fiction, the terminology that is all their own, and a world created with such detail you think you are there.

This book is beautifully written about a place called Terrax (earth in the distant future). A world where human physical contact is impossible and pornography is an addiction Murder a pastime and death just as horrible as it is in any reality.

For me the beauty of the book is the poetry and it is scattered very liberally throughout. All science fiction readers will enjoy this look at a world where the atmosphere is non-breathable and its population looks back in time at the mythology that is earth today.

A unique read by a very talented writer.

With already a prequel to the book already underway as well as another self help book, this time “Budgeting on a Dime” Diane is continuing to share her magic and insite with us readers.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining thirty minutes with my guest Diane Tegarden.

A Book and a Chat with Kellyann Zuzulo

There are numerous books that feature shape shifters, werewolves and other supernatural beings, but what about perhaps the oldest of all these creatures, and in many ways a being that is closer to humans, and that is Genie’s, also know as djinn’s.

My guest today Kellyann Zuzulo, knows all about these, already producing numerous novella’s based on the subject she now with her first novel “The Genie Ignites” released.

Kerllyann is a former journalist, whose interest in Middle Eastern myth and legend stems from her stint as a Managing Editor of Publications for the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Washington, D.C. He previous works include A Genie in the House of Saud, Angels & Genies, The Genie's Curse and The Third Wish all about different Genie’s and while some of these might be revamp into novels her favorite Genie “Zubas” along with “Bethany O’Brien” are the main characters of “A Genie Ignites”, which is the first in her series of books “The Zubas Chronicles”.

About “A Genie Ignites”

Bethany O’Brien is a 21st-century woman with a career, ambition, and bills. She doesn’t remember how she once felt about a nearly 4,000-year-old genie named Zubis who suddenly invades her world, but he certainly remembers her. In a previous incarnation, Bethany was an important temple priestess who apprenticed to the djinn.
Zubis is powerful, alluring, and infuriatingly bemused by Bethany’s skepticism. He once vowed to love her forever and has no plans of breaking his vow. Along with returning glimmers of this past life, Bethany must soon confront a citizenship in shambles, a job in jeopardy, and a mandate from an ancient society to kill the genie of her dreams.

Although the priestess she once was had been taught that a romance with a djinni must never be, Bethany gradually realizes that her love for Zubis must never be forgotten. She will risk her citizenship, her job, and her life to save him.

Kellyann takes the reader into a magical world of romance and adventure, and with a second book already underway I’m sure her novels will be read and enjoyed by many.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining thirty minutes with my guest Kellyann Zuzulo.

A Book and a Chat with Joan Bird

Joan Bird comes from a family that is almost as interesting as her book, involving a cattle rancher/silver miner, an orphan that survived the 1906 earthquake, the secretary to the Governor and the Irish lad who lied about his age to join the military. Mix with that her own previous existence as a singer/songwriter with a rock band and a pretence of telling stories, which with being one of six children helped while growing up and you have all the making of somebody who is destined to write.

Joan s is legendary amongst her family and friends for her storytelling. For years she's been including short stories with her holiday greetings each December and for years her friends and family have been encouraging her to write a book

With a “push” from a writing group, this love of storytelling produced her debut novel “Tumbleweed Heights” even then the title of the book has a story of its own. Her father waking the six kids up on Saturday mornings, by playing The Sons of the Pioneers Album, with that great song, “Drifting along with the Tumbling Tumbleweeds”.

Her fun book, while full of romance and happy ever after, also includes amazing dog and a food fight, rats, guns, raging storms and a kidnapping. So there’s plenty for the reader to read and enjoy. As one reviewer put it…

Funny. Rich descriptions, classic hero/heroine troubled pasts. With horses, bad guys, and quirky characters it's easy to engage. The tension between the gutsy Gilly and her hero is part of the dynamic. Though some may wish for more explicit physical connections, this reader was tantalized enough by the HEAT between Gilly and Luke so as not to be disappointed. With the countryside supporting the action, including thunder, lightning, old trucks, and the equivalent of Rin Tin Tin, simply a fun read. Okay, it's romance, but if nothing else, you'll want berry pie a few times a day when you're done.

About “Tumbleweed Heights”:

Moving to Briarwood, Colorado had not been in Gilly Casey’s original life plan. Sure, she’d dreamed of owning a horse ranch, but as kind of a part-time gig, in Topanga Canyon maybe. But the best laid plans of this high-powered L.A. attorney turn to dust when more than her bar card is threatened. Fleeing to a life she had never imagined quickly becomes a cat and mouse game just to stay alive.
Luke Hudson’s road to Briarwood was no less bumpy. Hiding from his own demons, he’s no longer able to float below the radar when he recognizes the feisty Miz Casey is in more trouble than she’ll admit. Donning the hero mantle years after he’d shed that skin, Luke realizes that rescuing Gilly might just save him, too.
With so many secrets between them, does love stand a chance? When the past trains its loaded gun on them, truth may not be enough to safeguard Gilly and Luke

A Book and a Chat with Jill Limber

Jill Limber used to get herself into trouble when she was younger telling stories, however now she gets paid for telling them which just shows you. She has always been an avid reader and into historical novels, falling in love with American history from reading of “Gone with the Wind”. Her love of American history continued at college where she was a history minor taking every class that Dr.Nasitar, a renowned expert on the Civil War era offered, a few semesters later she sat in on a couple of his classes she already had credits for, just to hear him again.

Her journey into romance writing started with “The Right Track” a book close to her heart, it is set on an actual train car that is almost 100 years old. She herself in the guise of a personal chef has travelled many times on this car and has many wonderful memories. So for Jill it was natural to write a story set on the car, as a great deal of the book was written during trips from San Diegoto Chicago and Washington D. C.

Her early success was soon followed by others books such as “The Sherriff Wins a Wife”, “Secrets of an Old Flame” and “Montana Morning” continued to spread her name amongst romance readers.

Now she has travelled full circle with her new historical romance novel “A Heart That Dares” mixing her love of American Civil War history with her romance writing.

About “A Heart That Dares”:

Amanda Giles, an unconventional and free-spirited young artist, has to fulfill a deathbed promise to her brother before she can take up her life as a Bohemian in New York. She finds herself swept up in the perilous life of an undercover espionage agent for the Army of the North with handsome young Army Captain. Daniel McGrath.

Daniel knows his preoccupation with the woman posing as his wife puts them both in grave danger, but he finds Amanda has no intention of abandoning their mission. As the danger increases, Daniel's most vital objective is to secure a future for himself and the woman he loves.

With a further historical romance already underway, Jill Limber continues to be a much read and enjoyed..

A Book and a Chat with K.T. Wells

When I checked up about my guest on today’s show “K.T. Wells” (secretly hoping to find what the K.T stood for) one thing I did find was that apart for being the writer of a great debut romance novel “Nobody’s Angel” she also had a thing about four inch heels, frosted brown sugar cinnamon Pop Tarts and original Cap’n Crunch. All of which I managed to include in what turned out to be another interesting and entertaining “A Book and a Chat”.

K.T.as we learned on the program has been telling stories since before she could read. Narrating stories to her baby brother the plotline of which were gleaned from the books pictures. Not much has changed with this story creation, indeed one of her husband’s favorite pastimes is to listen to her tales after asking her to tell the story of people they observe in restaurants, airports or the subway.

Nobody’s Angel is her first published book, but actually the fourth novel she has written, if you are into romance, with the full gambit of emotions then Nobody’s Angel is the book for you.

About “Nobody’s Angel”: (Taken from blackvelvetseduction)

Jake and Angie’s twentieth high school reunion sets the perfect stage for their lifelong friends to reunite the former sweethearts. Major roadblock – they have to trick Angie into coming home after twenty years. An elaborate ruse ensues at the same time they work on browbeating Jake into attending.

Maneuvering through emotional minefields rates a 10 for difficulty level, particularly when Angie lives the maxim: Time does not heal all wounds. And Jake? Check the Wiki pic next to Pride comes before the fall. Yep, that’s him tripping all over himself year after year.

But the firm conviction that these two were meant to be together propels a cast of quirky, determined friends into action. When tragedy derails the best laid plans, will Jake and Angie’s love rise to the occasion?

As one reviewer put it…

In Nobody's Angel we meet a story about a love lost and then recovered.

We meet a young woman who's been going from relationship to relationship without committing to anyone because she fails to feel the spark ignited years ago by her high school crush and love.

Then a chance meeting at a familiar place gives her the second chance she's been wanting, so as to put things right with her heart, body and soul once and for all.

I love the author's prose, the fact that is was very well edited and put together and that the story flowed seamlessly without interruption.

A beautifully crafted novel that is certainly worth 5 stars well done K.T Wells looking forward to reading more work from you, stay blessed and keep on writing.

Well as we learned from K.T. during the show hopefully there will soon be more for that reviewer and all of us to read and enjoy.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining thirty minutes with my guest K.T. Wells.

A Book and a Chat with J. Anderson Coats

Today’s “A Book and a Chat” was another one hour special being that my guest was another of the great group of debut YA authors from the Class of 2K12. J. Anderson Coats author of the brilliant historical fiction novel “The Wicked and the Just”.

Jillian grow up surrounded by books as her mother was a librarian, sharing with her daughter the joy of the written word, her father being a geologist added the enquiring mind that questioned some of these books, also being the reason she was later able to travel a mile underground.

She started writing almost as soon as she could hold a crayon, and encourage by her parents created several stories featuring nothing but ponies, some of these early creations I’m pleased to say she still has.

At the age of thirteen Jillian finished her first novel. It was pretty bad, but fortunately no one told her that. By the time she graduated from high school, she’d written six other novels, including one massive 500,000-word doorstop book with a sweeping, complicated plot and way too many characters. None of these books was very good, but she loved every single one and learned something new with each.
Her literary education mixed with her love of history has now brought forth her debut novel “The Wicked and the Just

About “The Wicked and the Just” (taken from Class of 2K12):

1293. North Wales. Ten years into English rule.

Cecily would give anything to leave Caernarvon and go home. Gwenhwyfar would give anything to see all the English leave.

Neither one is going to get her wish.

Behind the city walls, English burgesses govern with impunity. Outside the walls, the Welsh are confined by custom and bear the burden of taxation, and the burgesses plan to keep it that way.

Cecily can’t be bothered with boring things like the steep new tax or the military draft that requires Welshmen to serve in the king’s army overseas. She has her hands full trying to fit in with the town’s privileged elite, and they don’t want company.
Gwenhwyfar can’t avoid these things. She counts herself lucky to get through one more day, and service in Cecily’s house is just salt in the wound.

But the Welsh are not as conquered as they seem, and the suffering in the countryside is rapidly turning to discontent. The murmurs of revolt may be Gwenhwyfar’s only hope for survival – and the last thing Cecily ever hears.

During the show we learned much about the Welsh history and that is Wales the country, not that swims in the sea as one person we heard thought the book was about, including the reason for the mention of Caernarvon, rather than it being called Caernarfon.
The book has already received many rave reviews before its launch date in April.

As one blogger put it…

This book was filled with excellent characters, tons of actions, heaps of emotion and kept me up until way past my bed time. I’m really looking forward to see what Ms Coats writes next.

I for one agree with that statement, especially as we learned there is at least another if not two books in the pipeline about that period of Welsh history.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining thirty minutes with my guest J. Anderson Coats .
