A Book and a Chat with Lacey Boldyrev

Lacey Boldyrev is my guest on today’s "A Book and a Chat", the name might sound a little familiar to listeners of the program, as Lacey has been on the show a few times before, previously though as a listener asking questions of the shows guests. Today though, this YA reader, blogger and aspiring author, is herself a guest on the show.

Lacey has always been “into” YA literature, and though it was only in February 2009 she started writing seriously.

As she puts it…

“Within 30 days I had a rough (like #50 grit sandpaper, rough) first draft of a YA historical I call FATED. I’ve revised it for over a year and it’s still not ready.”

“Fated” might not be ready, but as we learned during the entertaining thirty minute show, Lacey, is already in print. Her short story “PARALLEL” is appears in an anthology called “REBEL MOON” published by Rebel Books.

This I’m sure is only a start as there is already a full length novel “GREYSKIN” going through the final cleanup, already out there seeking representation, with another story well on the way.

Lacey shared with us her news on her writing as well as discussing some of the wonderful authors of 2010, and how they have not only helped aspiring authors such as Lacey, also just the way they have been so approachable and how much success they have had over the last year, we also touched on the news that Shannon Delany for instance, with three books in the “13 to Life” series has just been asked to produce a further two books.

Not only did Lacey share with us about her blog http://sistersinscribe.blogspot.com/ and how her fellow bloggers from that site have helped her along the way, but also she shared with us about a brand new blog. Tangled Fiction blog spot (http://tangledfiction.blogspot.com/) is where four YA writers collaborate to complete one story a month. Launch date for that highly interesting site is September 7th.

From reading to writing, authors to publicity the show covered many areas. It was a pleasure to talk to lacey as a guest and I’m sure that next time I am lucky enough to have her on the program it will be interviewing a fully fledged author.

A Book and a Chat with Steve Kendall

After a long summer it looks all though the seasons are changing, leaves are starting to turn color on trees, and here in Connecticut where I live the children finally after what has seemed half a lifetime, went back to school.

With the evening getting darker, and as the actress said to the bishop “winter draws on” todays author has a book that would to my mind be a must to while away those chilled evening, when the winds is blowing and you’re snug indoors.

Today’s guest, Steve Kendall has been president of an advertising company, journalist and editor. Today he joined us to chat about his debut novel "Follow the Falcon".

“Follow the Falcon” is inspired, by the still-unsolved theft of 12 masterpieces from Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, in 1990. It is a novel full of mystery and intrigue; the characters are believable and interesting. The twists and keep the reading guessing, it is indeed one of those books you get lost in and lose track of time. Sort of “Artist meets mystery” the result is one great novel well worth your time to check it out.

Steve shared with us many insights into the production of this book, which while currently only available in E-Book format I’m sure will soon be on many a library and book store shelf.

About ”Follow the Falcon”…

A Book and a Chat with Kim Baccellia

Kim Baccellia, my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” had her first success at the age of six, when she won an art contest, a small picture of which was in the San Francisco Chronicle. That started Kim on the creative road that has lead to her so far two successful books. I say so far, as I’m sure these will be the first of many successes.

After having writing credits in various magazines and including several poems, also her essay on the adoption of her son, Our Turn, appeared in both Adoptive Families magazine and the Adoptive Families 2003-2004 Adoption Guide

As an educator, Kim couldn't find many books for Latinos that were upbeat or dealt with their heritage. During her personal quest to find out more about her own Mexican heritage, she began writing her YA Urban Fantasy “Earrings of Ixtumea”
This successful book has been followed up by , her paranormal young adult fiction novel “Crossed Out”

About Crossed Out:

Following the light can’t be that hard, right? So why don’t the dead just do it and leave Stephanie Steward alone? However nothing is ever as simple as it should be as Stephanie learns when her hidden ‘gift’ becomes more than a nuisance, quickly turning into a liability. During an entertaining thirty minute show, Kim shared with us much about history behind her writing, as well as an incite not only into her two books, but also on her up and coming novel upper MG fantasy "No Goddesses Allowed".

A Book and a Chat with Kathryn Shay

Kathryn Shay, my guest today, had her first book accepted on a snowy December day back in 1994, since then she has gone onto write numerous Harlequin Superromance and several about fireman, novels before spreading her wings to write several novels of a slightly more “gritty” nature.

Kathryn has become known for her powerful characterizations – readers say they feel they know the people in her books – and her heart-wrenching, emotional writing (her favorite comments are that fans cried while reading her books or stayed up late to finish them). In testament to her skill, the author has won five RT BookClub Magazine Reviewers Choice Awards, three Holt Medallions, two Desert Quill Awards, the Golden Leaf Award, and several online accolades.

Kathryn’s thirty-seventh novel is one that as she shares with us on the program, is very special to her; one that she believes is her best so far.
What led to Kathryn writing “The Perfect Family”?

We’ll let Kathryn answer this in her own words…

“What led to writing this book was when my son came out gay, I decided it was time to tell a story around that issue. The Perfect Family is fiction but touches on some of the things my own family went through. I wished then I’d had a book like this to help me understand that a family’s struggle when a teen comes out is okay, but he deserves love and support from them, too. And as I said, I was also a high school teacher for many years and I know teenagers. I know how they react to people who are different from them, how sexual orientation can freak them out and how they can be cruel. But they can also be unbelievably loyal and supportive. I tried to show all this in the book”

Well as we can tell from the chat with this wonderful author, the book is nothing but a success, from the title to the wonderful cover, all helps produce a book and a story that all will enjoy, from family’s of a gay child, to people who work with teenagers, or just anybody who enjoys a really interesting and entertaining read. A Book and a Chat with Soren Paul Petrek

My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is Soren Paul Petrek author of a fascinating novel based on a female character from the Second World War. His book "Cold Lonely Courage" to me stans alongside stories that I grow up with in England from the war, which perhaps have never reached the American shores. “Albert RN”, The Wooden Horse, and in this case “Carve Her Name with Pride”

As we discussed during the show, there are many thousands of unsung heroines whose stories just have not been told, if indeed they were known about. The story told by Soren, is based on such a woman. The fact the story is told from a woman’s point of view alone, makes it the sort of book that will appeal to female readers, who normally turn off when they hear that the book is a war story. Cold Lonely Courage is a novel that will appeal to ALL.

Cold Lonely Courage

The action begins during the German Blitzkrieg attack on France in the opening days of World War II. The heroine, Madeleine Toche races to the front to find her brother dying after his unit is destroyed as the Germans advance. Crushed, Madeleine returns his body to her parents. In the months that follow, Madeleine is raped by a Nazi officer. Seeking revenge she kills him and flees to England to volunteer for duty with Britain’s shadowy Special Operations Executive. Trained as an assassin she clandestinely returns to France with Captain Jack Teach a veteran of the SOE ‘Dirty Tricks Department’. They find themselves in love but are torn apart by duty and the insurmountable odds of survival. Madeleine fights on terrorizing the murderous Nazi elite always only one step ahead of capture and torture.

Far from Soren’s normal job which is somewhat in the style of Perry Mason, his writing comes, from knowledge gained in both England and France, where back in the 70’s and 80’s stories were often there to be heard if you’d just spare the time to chat over a cup of tea with the war survivors. Indeed as we were told, the author has his own childhood story to tell from his days in France.

Within “Cold Lonely Courage” Madeleine’s story is raw and driven. There are no detours; it will appeal to the base emotions of readers. It is not an ordinary World War II novel. Cold Lonely Courage tells the brutal truth about the violence people are capable of when called upon to defend themselves and their families.

The courage of women in war is marginalized and given subordinate consideration in popular fiction. This could well be why woman readers turn off at the thought of a war time story; I’m sure Cold Lonely Courage will change that.

A Book and a Chat with Dr Harry J. Saranchak

My guest today should have been Dr. Harry J. Saranchak, 30 years a vascular and general surgeon in three Connecticut hospitals, and for 25 of those he was also educator and mentor to medical students, residents and colleagues—while receiving eight Golden Scalpel awards for teaching excellence. Talking about his murder, mystery, voodoo, self-discovery and romance book “Betrayals of Hippocrates: Crimes Against Innocence”.

Imagine my surprise, after all the mentioned in shows over the last few months of parallel universes where the stories that and author puts down onto paper exist and all us writers are the conduit in this universe. How the characters take over the story leading the author far from their designed plot. Once the show started it was as I was saying, a surprise to actually be interview characters from the book, rather than chatting to the author. First the hijack the novel and then my radio show.

Still the show proved very interesting and enlightening, hearing if you like from both side of what went on through the books pages, from the investigation and shock of what Dr Alston Crowley and Maggie found happening on the beautiful island of Haiti, much of which was being done by the less than Hippocratic Dr Longfellow. To the views of Dr Longfellow himself, that the suffering of a few to aid millions was worth the suffering, which to my mind smacks of Nazi Germany.

“Betrayals of Hippocrates: Crimes Against Innocence”.

Dr. Alston Crowley’s medical career took flight on the wings of his parents’ dream. With fluctuating grades and a half-hearted desire to become a doctor, Alston much preferred to set his sights on specimens of the female variety. Not wishing to disappoint his parents, however, he decided to compromise, and set out for the Caribbean island of Montserrat, where he studied while basking in the natural beauty around him. Then, during his residency, the euphoria of paradise soon morphed into the harsh, clinical reality of New York Charity Hospital, where he met his nemesis, the brilliant practitioner, Dr. Maggie Finney. Show 200 - A Book and a Chat with Bonnie Doerr

Today's "A Book and a Chat" was show number 200 and I was proud to have one of the Class of 2K10 the one and only Bonnie Doerr as my guest.

When she realized at the age of 6, she could not be a cowboy, or as we found during the program, a horse, nor was there going to be some prince to drag her off to a cozy home on acres and acres of land, she decided to become a teacher. From the early days of doing homework on a chalkboard in her basement to teaching all grades in seven different states, Bonnie has mixed teaching and reading with her love of nature.

This eventually lead to a children’s book “Kenzie’s Key” which was recommended by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) for environmental education and is also included in Milkweed Editions literary guides.
Kenzie’s Key was also the grounding of Bonnie debut YA novel “ISLAND STING”.

Published by “Leap Books” and already on its second printing, this book has become one of the successes of 2010.

During what was a wonderful 200th show Bonnie shared with us many items and details about the book, her love of nature and the area of the Florida Keys as well as some insight into the characters win the novel.

ISLAND STING:

What better way to hook readers into a book, than to have your main character almost drown as she rescues what she takes to be a dog, but later finds out is an endangered Key Deer? The fact that she is rescued by a very cute looking guy just adds to the opening pages of this great book.

Mix with that a mystery, poachers, the desire to clean up the litter environment all set in the beauty of the Florida Keys and you have a book that will appeal to all ages.

From science and art teachers, to green teens, or just those who enjoy a good mystery, this book is one that I’m sure will find it way into libraries and peoples must reads for 2010. Bonnie’s second book “STAKEOUT”, a book about turtles already in the final stages of editing, before being released early next year the name Bonnie Doerr is one to look out for.

A Book and a Chat with Jacque Heebner

From Babe, Watership Down and Animal Farm to Aristacats, Lady and the Tramp and Charlottes Webb animals have been popular in both books and films. My guest today has produced a book and created a character that I’m sure will join that group of much loved literary heroes.

Author Jacque Heebner is a Los Angeles socialite, designer, animal rights activist and former Daily News journalist who has taken her love of cats and I might add dogs, and shaped it into long awaited celebrity-endorsed murder mystery novel… “First Person Cat”.

Set in the surreal world of Beverly Hills power, money and celebrity, the book is written from the point of view of Tiffany, a humanesque diva-feline brought up on caviar, Perrier, mansions and an acute appreciation of diamonds.

Tiffany or “Tiff to her close friends, a regal Tortoise-shell Persian, is a witnesses to the murder of her owner-mother, a Cher-like rock star with two hot daughters, at her home in Beverly Hills. Tiffany seems to smell the murderer’s thoughts and hear human words. By what creative methods can she expose the person who murdered her human mother and reveal this to investigators?”
You’ll need to read the book for that answer…

During the show Jacque not only shared the origins of the book and how it developed into the success it is today, but also many enjoyable stories and anecdotes mixed into what was a really enjoyable and much too short thirty minute show.

A Book and a Chat with Irene Watson

There are many words that describe my guest on todays "A Book and a Chat"... Author, advisor, mentor, author coach, book marketer, editor of “Reader Views”, and old friend. Irene Watson is all of these and more.

Previously on the show, she shared with us about her award winning book “The Sitting Swing”. Today Irene joined me to talk about her new work "Rewriting Life Scripts: Transformational Recovery for Families of Addicts".

A Book and a Chat with AJ Scudiere

My guest on today’s "A Book and a Chat" is Suspense/Thriller author AJ Scudiere. So far she has two novels printed with a third underway.

AJ it could be said, looks at the world in a slightly different way to others, patterns pop out at her, she loves the textures and the texture of simple items such as the keys on her keyboard and how the curvature feels to her touch.

To this end as AJ shared with us during an interesting thirty minute show, it was not wonder that the characters that had been filling her head eventually came to fruition in her first novel “ Resonance”.

RESONANCE:

The last time the earth's magnetic poles switched places, the dinosaurs died.
Now, frogs are mutating, dolphins are beaching themselves, and birds are migrating out of season. Worse, people are dying from a strange new disease. The problems all have one chilling similarity. They are all occurring in a "hotspot" - a pocket of reversed polarity that tells us . . . THE SHIFT IS ALREADY HERE.

This book also has become available in an Audi Movie format, as well as AJ told us in a game version that can be played alongside the reading of the book.
This was followed by her second novel “Vengeance”.

A Book and a Chat with Rhonda Hayter

I was thrilled to have on “A Book and a Chat” today another of the debut authors from the class if 2k10, that wonderful group of YA and Middle Grade authors who have their debut books coming out in 2010.


Rhonda Hayter is today’s guest chatting about her debut middle grade book “The Witchy Worries of Abbie Adams”

Peanut butter cup ice-cream loving Rhonda, has gone from being an actress to a mother who is writing a series of books about a young witch who keeps encountering historical figures!

It has been a long “trek” to publication for Rhonda as she told us, from her early acting days to finial taking the critique hat of and letting her own creative juices flow. Even then the path to publication has been full of its own potholes.

With her children the age group she was writing for characters and information were never too far away, in what I’m sure will be a book many will love reading. She even shared with us, the fact the book has now been picked up at Scholastic, which will mean it will be available in many a school library I am sure.

The Witchy Worries of Abbie Adams:

Abbie is a regular eleven-year old girl with normal problems, like a really strict fifth-grade teacher. (Meet Miss Linegar. Rhymes with vinegar.) She’s chronically behind in homework, struggling to remember all her lines in the drama club play, and tormented by having to keep a big secret from her very best friend. And on top of all these problems, she’s also a witch and has to deal with outsized crises, like her little brother morphing into a werewolf and trying to eat his first-grade teacher. A Book and a Chat with Paul Rademacher

My guest on todays "A Book and a Chat” is Paul Rademacher.

After a career in the construction industry, Paul sensing a call into the Christian ministry entered Princeton Theological Seminary in 1982. He graduated three years later with a Master of Divinity degree, having majored in psychology and Old Testament studies. His first church was in Muncie, Indiana, where he continued his exploration of spirituality and meditation. He also enrolled in doctoral studies at the Ecumenical Theological Center in Detroit, Michigan, where practice in prayer and meditation were emphasized as the foundation for ministry.

In 1987 he found himself being drawn to the writings of Robert Monroe, the founder of The Monroe Institute (TMI) whose books chronicled his own "out of body" experiences and mystical encounters. This was the start of a journey that now includes the publication of his first book, A Spiritual Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe: Travel Tips for the Spiritually Perplexed.
A Spiritual Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe is the perfect book for readers who feel that their religious tradition no longer satisfies their spiritual needs. An elegantly written memoir and meditation, the book explores the many paths of enlightenment available to readers looking beyond today’s churches, temples, and synagogues.

A Book and a Chat with Terry M. Drake

It has been a week of discovery, from finding out about a past life, to having a guest the very next day talking about much the same thing, then yesterday finding out I had done nearly 200 shows on blog radio. Toda’s show guest is just another step along what is perhaps some master plan to make the shows for this week just steps along the path of discovery.

Terry M. Drake is the author of the self-help book, Live Happily, Ever More...Now!

Terry is a Licensed Social Worker, National Board Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, Certified Trainer of Ericksonian Hypnosis and NLP. He has spent the last 15 years learning about himself and others, through his academic studies resulting in his MSW and his professional studies, as a family therapist, clinical supervisor and vast training and research into hypnosis, neuro-linguistic programming, the law of attraction and positive psychology. Terry is currently a Director of mental and behavioral health programs and a Life Coach, Hypnotherapist in private practice. He is also ready to put his skills to use as an author, speaker, consultant and coach.

So that’s Terry but what about his book?

A Book and a Chat with Randolph J. Rogers

Sometimes life gives you a shock, something happens, you can’t explain, you do something, turn left instead of right stop at a junction and don’t know why, my guest today had something happened to him which not only opened him up to understanding, but also changed his whole life.

My guest today “Randolph (Randy) J. Rogers” tells in “The Key Of Life” a true story about who we are, why we are here and how we are all connected. That connection is meticulously documented as you follow his quest for the truth and then proven in an ending, and that is really only the beginning.

What to me is even more of a coincidence… or is it the master plan of your life? Is that I went for a “past regression” viewing myself only yesterday, something that people who know will find a strange thing for me to do. Then to find that my guest on today’s show, not only wrote a book about such things but was able to go into some of the questions and questions I had following my session yesterday.

The Key of Life:

In just about everyone’s life, there comes a time when they may question their reason for existing. For me that journey began on a day in June of 1995, shortly after I had moved into my new home. A feeling swept over me that an old friend from grade school, Kathy Lynch, had passed away. I had not seen Kathy since 1973 but now I couldn’t get her, or the feeling that she was gone from this world, out of my mind. My former news background is one of many forces pushing me in an intense search to find what became of her. My investigation quickly turns into an obsession, driven by dreams and a pattern of synchronistic events. Along the way, I find that myself, Kathy, and a mysterious author named L.W. Rogers, are somehow all linked together in the past. The pieces of a larger puzzle begin to emerge and prophecies I’ve foretold are revealed to be the truth as I uncover a story about past lives, present circumstances and reincarnation.
