A Book and a Chat with Dr Mark Rubinstein

Fellow Connecticut author Dr Mark Rubinstein is the guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”.

From his background of medicine and psychiatry which includes several non-fiction books, Mark wrote his first debut fiction novel in the form of the wonderful suspenseful and riveting, “Mad Dog House” which he shared with us on his last visit. This book went on to be a “Finalist for the 2012 ForeWord Reviews Book of the Year Award”  (Thriller & Suspense), as well as receiving werll over a 150 glowing reviews on Amazon, and I might add one of the favorite books in my own household. This was followed with the  tense, moving, and wondrously bone-chilling novel. novel "Love Gone Bad".

Now Mark has another hit on his hands in the form of his novella "The Foot Soldier".

About "The Foot Soldier"

Right after college graduation, Costa, a lower-middle-class kid from Buffalo, New York, is drafted into the US army and plunged into the Vietnam War. The Foot Solder catapults the reader back to the conflict that changed America.

A Book and a Chat with Dr Mark Rubinstein

Fellow Connecticut author Dr Mark Rubinstein was due to be my guest on last weeks show however a flat tire and no mobile meant he could not make the show. Meanwhile my guest for this weeks show had to drop out as their book is not in print yet and they wanted to put off appearing until it was available. Therefore two wrongs ended up making a right and I am pleased to say that Dr Mark Rubinstein is the guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”.

Now Mark is back with a brand new and and if anything even more “can’t stop reading and page turning” novel in the form of “Love Gone Bad” a wonderful tense, moving, and wondrously bone-chilling novel.

There's nothing subtle or surprising about Rubinstein's one-note tale of obsessive love and insanity, and that includes the characterization, plotting, and especially the writing.

He's got a story to tell, so by God he tells it, without the slightest nod to artifice or art. Surgeon Adrian Davis, divorced and consumed by his job, meets gorgeous nurse Megan Haggarty in the lunchroom of the New England hospital where they both work, and before he can even touch his chicken soup, he's madly in love and the feeling seems reciprocated. Megan's a single mom, and she's got a big secret. Her ex-husband, Conrad Wilson, "a brilliant madman," has arrived from Colorado, and he's determined to kill Megan,; their daughter, Marlee,; and Megan's new boyfriend, Adrian. Adrian and Megan escape a number of attacks, until Conrad is finally caught and put in a hospital for the criminally insane.

There's no question he's going to escape, and in fact no questions at all as the story speeds to its inevitable conclusion.

A giant twist toward the end will leave most readers more amazed by how Rubinstein  laboriously manages it than by what it actually is.

The book is a fast paced page turner, a provocative psychological thriller that will keep you as one reviewer stated… “kept reading faster and faster to find out the ending.”

Last time  Dr Rubinstein was on the show I used the comment from one reviewer who was wanting more after Mad Dog House…

Word of caution: be prepared for an all-night, page-turning read where you will emerge exhilarated and begging for more.”

Well reviewer your wish will be granted, as we discussed during the show the originally planned standalone novel will soon have a follow up in the form of “Mad Dog Justice".

A Book and a Chat with Frances Gilbert

Another returning guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” in the form of fellow CT (CAPA) author and also fellow ex Brit, Frances Gilbert. Previously Francis was on the show mainly chatting about her children’s books including the wonderful “The Cookie Thief”, a book that I know firsthand is extremely popular with children and schools.

Today though, we were mainly talking about the other side of Frances’s writing, perhaps her “darker” side and her wonderful psychological thriller “Where Is She Now?”

Set in set in a fictional amalgam of two small English towns, the book is full of intrigue and mystery, full of twists and turns to keep any reader wanting to turn the page.

I will shamelessly share parts of a terrific review by Nina Sankovitch as she describes the book better than I ever could…

“… Gilbert’s writing is lyrical and clear. She does an excellent job portraying the fear and anxiety of someone shaken to the core by trauma, by guilt, and by helplessness in the face of very real danger. Gilbert takes her time creating Rosemary and her space in the world. Slowly, details accumulate and surely, the reader is drawn into the mystery of Rosemary’s child, the question of Rosemary’s sanity or insanity, and the struggle for Rosemary’s survival.

The final unraveling of the truth is unexpected, believable, and riveting. Kindness comes in the form of strangers while treachery begins at home. Where Is She Now left me gasping and roiling, breathless and blown away. This is a wonderful novel.

Rosemary wants only to feel the calm promised in the hymns of her childhood, she wants to 'lay down her burden and enter in.' Cradling her green pocket book wrapped in an old green shawl, she wanders through her daily life with her husband Brian, her traumatized self, and her alter ego, the bossy and competent Anna. Something has happened in the past, centering on her baby, but Rosemary can't quite remember what it was. And where is the baby now?

As she oscillates between rational and delusional spells she seeks validation and support from the inanimate objects around her, the cups on the shelf, the knobs on the bedposts, the books in the bookcase, and the houses lining the streets. In her conversations with them we see a Rosemary who is not quite as deranged as she seems, and a Brian, not quite as supportive as he would like to have you believe.

We also learned during the show not only about a second thriller “She Should Have Come for Me” but also about a third “Murder in the Gun Room” which is currently under way.

Of course the question about about her much wanted flock of sheep as well as the collection of teacups also came up during the show, as well as is next for this talented Connecticut author.
