A Book and a Chat with Deborah Dupre'

For over thirty years “preventionist” Deborah Dupre' has been fighting for  human rights, peace, social justice and environmental activism and research.

Now in her book “Vampire of Macondo” she shares the “ Life, Crimes, Curses in South Louisiana on the Gulf of Blood That  Powerful Forces Do Not Want You to Know.”

While we are being told from the highest position in the land and with every advert for South Louisiana,    that the beaches and the food in that are safe…. But are they?

The book tells through over 400 pages and 1000 references the untold story of psychopathic genocide of Americans by the petrochemical military industrial complex, of how BP’s Deepwater Horizon catastrophe has sickened and killed thousands of people on the Gulf of Mexico Coast and government covered it up.

The book shares the heart-rending stories of the victims and thoroughly documented evidence of crimes by Big Oil, the military, the seafood and tourism industries, health care providers, and corrupt government leaders.

A Book and a Chat with Thomas Laresca

The show today showed that one does not have to write a might tome to share with the reader important and helpful information that can only help those reading the finished product.

Thomas Laresca a high school and college athlete with a career professional career as a stock trader was living his American dream in Boca Raton, Florida with a wife, family and beautiful home when his world was shattered.

He was as we heard during the program wrongly arrested and abused by the police right outside his own house in a gated community. An event that not only left him, in intensive care, due mainly to being maced for thirty minutes while being pinned down, handcuffed and hogtied, but as we heard he actually died and started on the trip towards the light.

While recovering from this incident and fighting for justice Thomas was diagnosed with with cancer in three parts of his body. The next step was to go on a course of Chemo, however upon his first visit, he was told his blood count was too low, and the therapy could not continue, giving him just a possible three months to live.

His faith which had previously been severely tested now was tested once again, Thomas however not only found the strength from his often quiet praying and reading the New Testament, but his body started to self heal enough that the therapy was able to continue and he is now cancer free.

This though with all the issues was enough to start Thomas on the slippery slide into depression, something that again, with his faith and inner strength he was able to overcome.

Now in his book “I Want To Help: My Story About Cancer, Depression and God” he is able to share his own experiences and thoughts with many other who are facing their own issues.

The book is not a large book, but is one that will help and aid many readers.

A Book and a Chat with James Bottino

James Bottino, my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” has followed several paths during his life and faced some real challenges, the latest of which was to publish his debut novel “The Canker Death”

James is basically an English teacher and computer geek rolled into one. His early years of teaching high school English in a suburb of Chicago being supplemented by a double life in the deep corners of the night hacking and building computers and networks.

Word of this second pastime, unbeknownst to James, leaked out, and he started receiving employment offers. Son what was a hobby became a profession and he became a senior computer / networking administrator for a scientific research laboratory.

Far from living his dream, just six months into this position, however, tragedy struck when, at the age of 31, James was diagnosed with cancer. Given limited odds to survive James set about facing the challenge of the thought of is infant daughter not remembering him if he died, James set about the fight of his life, enduring massive doses of chemotherapy that killed the cancer but nearly killed him as well.

After years of struggle, he survived, but only after enduring systemic nerve damage from the treatments that left him permanently photophobic, phonophobic and with frequent difficulty in using his hands. These events focused his efforts and helped him to prevail in his dual goals: being a father to his daughter and completing his first novel, THE CANKER DEATH. Even the style that James decide to write in was a challenge, let’s face it if you can beat cancer, what sort of challenge is to write in first person?

About The Canker Death:

When the reclusive, cynical systems administrator, Petor Fidelistro, discovers that one of his own servers has been cracked late one night, he makes it his personal business to track down the perpetrator. What his search uncovers thrusts him, unaware, into a mad shifting between worlds, time and alien minds.

Fighting to keep his grip on reality, and forcing him to cope with his past, Petor finds himself uncontrollably transitioning between sentient minds that range from semi-conscious to dominant, from beings whose bodies and identities he can control, to those who control him so fully as to be unaware of his presence.

As the story unfolds, Petor gathers clues in a twisting mystery that sends him shifting between the mourning child Nanzicwital; the golem giant Faskin; the lascivious, female ambassador Desidia; and Nokinis, an insane prisoner with whom Petor battles for mastery of his own memories. Having beaten yet another challenge, James is now embarking on a further novel, this time aimed more the at the young teen market.

A Book and a Chat with Megan Bostic

My guest on today’s Book and a Chat is one of this year’s debut YA authors, a member of the Class of 2K12 Megan Bostic. Let’s first get the name right it’s Megan with a long “e” so it’s more like “Me gan”, now that’s out the way let’s chat about this great new author. Megan is the author of “Never 18” a YA book that has received great reviews from teens and adults alike.

Megan lives over on the west coast, but not the sunny climes location that one thinks of, the rainy and gray northwest weather that makes her extremely “angsty” (one of her favorite words). Megan loves the color black, monkeys (has a collection of sock monkeys), and is a notorious Facebook addict. She migrated from early writing of poems and songs, though the poetry is making somewhat of a comeback to writing her first novel which she completed in 2008. That novel still has to see the light of day and in 2009 she produced “Never 18”.

She writes in the “seat of your pants” style, typing away with reckless abandon to get, with the aid of numerous sticky notes, the story that is bursting out of her head typed out. Once written, then starts the editing and smoothing out process.

While “Never 18” is only 200 pages long it is filled with emotional scenes, though some the language and topics are perhaps not for the younger end of the YA market, “Never 18” is a book for all ages, and can and should be shared by adults as well as children as it relates to real life situations.

About “Never 18”

Austin Parker is on a journey to bring truth, beauty, and meaning to his life.

Austin Parker is never going to see his eighteenth birthday. At the rate he’s going, he probably won’t even see the end of the year. The doctors say his chances of surviving are slim to none even with treatment, so he’s decided it’s time to let go.

But before he goes, Austin wants to mend the broken fences in his life. So with the help of his best friend, Kaylee, Austin visits every person in his life who touched him in a special way. He journeys to places he’s loved and those he’s never seen. And what starts as a way to say goodbye turns into a personal journey that brings love, acceptance, and meaning to Austin’s life.

While Never 18 is Megan’s debut novel there are already several others either completed or in the pipeline, including another contemporary YA tentatively titled, Sad. I call it a story of loss, loathing and lacerations. It’s about a girl suffering from depression who ends up being a cutter, and her healing process.

It just isn't my normal genre. But I knew of Ms Bostic, and I had heard a lot about this book, so I leaped at the chance to give it a try. And, OH MY, I feel honored and privileged to have read NEVER EIGHTEEN. Megan Bostic it a true talent, and NEVER EIGHTEEN is a brilliant debut.

I for one, totally agree with that!

A Book and a Chat with Carla Malden

My guest today Carla Malden grow up in a life somewhat surrounded by TV and films, with her Dad being Karl Malden famous character actor and of course Streets of San Francisco. Yet for Carla as she shared with us, he was just anormal Dad who happened to go away every now and then to work.

With a background like that it was obvious that English in the form of a Bachelor of Arts at U.C.L.A then working in the film business would be a path she would tread.

This led to her meeting, working with and then marrying filmmaker Laurence Starkman. They worked together on twelve feature screenplays; also serving as rewrite guns-for-hire. The team of Malden & Starkman wrote and produced the short romantic comedy Whit & Charm, which screened at eight major film festivals, including The Hamptons, and won several awards. They also wrote and created a series of Cine Golden Eagle Award-winning Art History films produced in association with The Detroit Institute of Art and The National Gallery.

Carla's wonderful book "AfterImage: A Brokenhearted Memoir of a Charmed Life" delivers a fiercely personal account of her battling the before and surviving the after of losing her husband to cancer.

As Carla shared, it’s not a case of getting over what happened more about being able to live with it… “You don’t know what you’ve got tell it’s gone…”

The book in Carla words ….

Is a book is about my transition to widowhood. It is about a last year and a first year: the last year of my husband's life and my entire life up to that point and the first year after he died and the rest of my life. I have found that different moments and themes resonate with different readers according to their personal experiences with relationships, marriage, and loss. I hope that everyone will think about valuing their loved ones in the moment - which is all we really ever have. Put simply, the take-away is "carpe diem."

The book is not only a shared love letter, but intermixed with snapshots of their lives together can actually bring a smile to ones face while knowing that there are tears behind some of the words.

AfterImage: A Brokenhearted Memoir of a Charmed Life delivers a fiercely personal account of her battling the before and surviving the after of losing her husband to cancer. It offers an alert for an entire generation: this is not your mother’s widowhood.

With a novel just finished and a possible children book next, Carla I’m sure will continue to share her talent as with “After Image” she has shared her life and her love.
