A Book and a Chat with Susan Wingate

On my show tonight I have multi-award winning, Amazon number one bestselling author Susan Wingate.

As well as an author Susan is a vibrant public speaker, Susan offers inspiring, motivational talks about the craft of writing, publishing and marketing, and how to survive this extremely volatile ePublishing industry. She presents these lectures at writing conferences, libraries and book stores around the country. She also loves to visit with book clubs for more intimate chats.

Susan’s book “Drowning” was winner of the “Forward National Literature Award” as well as being an Amazon Number one best seller. Her YA novel “Spider Brains” (which is soon to be followed by “Ant Brains” reached Amazon best seller status. As did the first two books in the “Bobby’s Diner” series “Bobby’s Diner” and “Hotter than Helen” in fact Bobby’s Diner reached the number two best seller spot.

Now this multi talented author brings us the third in the Bobby’s Diner series in the form of her new novel “Sacrifice at Sea”.

About “Sacrifice at Sea”:

Sacrifice at Sea just received the honor of Top Pick from Spirited Woman!

A Book and a Chat with Allison M Dickson

My guest today Allison M Dickson is one of those authors who have been creating since they could first hold a crayon. The fact that she was reading Stephen King by the age of 11 might be one of the reasons some of her writing is a little on the dark side.

After early success with short stories including “Dust” and “Under the Scotch Broom” she has now produced her debut book a dark contemporary fiction novel titled “STRINGS” .

About “STRINGS”:

After four years of turning tricks in a mob-run New York brothel to pay off a debt, Nina is ready to go back to a quiet life in Iowa. Just one more client and the whole nightmare will be behind her, but this last trick turns into a battle for her soul. Meanwhile, the brothel’s sadistic Madam has been hiding away money in order to move up in her family’s organization, and she only wants the half million dollars the reclusive millionaire pays for the girls. But her driver Ramón has other ideas, making off with the money left behind when Nina’s last trick goes unexpectedly awry.

The theft comes at a great cost to the Madam, setting off a horrific chain of events that changes them all. The hooker. The driver. The Madam. All of them on a collision course to a place where only madness holds sway.

With Hobbes End releasing Allison’s dystopian science fiction novel, THE LAST SUPPER later this year I am sure we will hear plenty more of Allison M Dickson.

A Book and a Chat with Gabrial Valjan

My guest on today’s “A Book and a ChatGabriel Valjan was short-listed for the 2010 Fish Short Story Prize for his Boston noir, ‘Back in the Day.’ Gabriel’s short stories and some of his poetry continue to appear in literary journals and online magazines. He recently won first prize in ZOUCH Magazine’s inaugural Lit Bit Contest.

Gabriel moved from short stories to a full length novels with “Roma, Undergroun’ the first in his Roma series which has been followed by “Wasp’s Nest” and now his latest the thriller series “Threading the Needle”.

About “Threading the Needle: (taken from Amazon)

Milan. Bianca’s curiosity gets a young university student murdered, but not before he gives her a file that details a secret weapon under development with defense contractor Adastra. Guilt may drive her to find justice for the slain Charlie Brooks, but she is warned by the mysterious Loki to stay away from this case that runs deep with conspiracy. A Book and a Chat with Mark J Grant

My guest today is Mark J Grant, a name well known to people in the financial world. Mark has run Capital Markets and been on the Board of Directors of four investment Banks. He was also the President of a public company in the Telecom space. He started writing “Out of the Box” an economic commentary about eleven years ago that now goes to some 5,000 financial institutions in 48 countries.

Mark has also written “Out of the Box and onto Wall Street: Unorthodox Insights on Investments and the Economy”, but now as they say on Monty Python for something completely different.

At a dinner party friends were discussing how there was not any “fairy tale” type books their young children could read and enjoy, Mark took matters into his own hands stating he would write such a book. The result is the wonderful “LILA: THE SIGN OF THE ELVEN QUEEN.”

About LILA: THE SIGN OF THE ELVEN QUEEN:

Lila is a polite six-year-old girl who lives with her mama and papa in New York City. She has two cats, and would now like to have a dog–except dogs are not allowed in her apartment building. After thinking about it for awhile, Lila asks her parents if she can have an invisible dog.

Her parents agree, and together they decide to name the dog Fluffy. On their way to the pet store to buy invisible supplies for the invisible dog, a black and white Aussie appears from around the corner and introduces himself to Lila, saying, “My name is Fluffy.”

In a series of fun adventures that follow, Fluffy introduces Lila and her family to the invisible people of Iceland, who live inside the boulders of Central Park and the cornerstones of New York City buildings. One day, the invisible people discover that the birthmark on Lila’s left forearm is the sign of their Elven Queen, and just as she turns seven, Lila is made a princess. Can anything be better than that?

The book has proved to be a huge hit both with those reading it as well as being read to. A second book is already planned which I am sure will continue Mark down the path of a successful children’s book author.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining show as I chat with my special guest today on A Book and a Chat with Mark J Grant

A Book and a Chat with Todd Brockdorf

A Book and a Chat” starts off 2014 with Todd Brockdorf as my guest.

Todd Brockdorf is NOT an astronaut, a professional athlete, or a reality TV star (yet), he simply is a regular guy who discovered how to excel beyond the ordinary and find what moves him in life.

While in college, Todd thought he knew everything about running a student organization. Was he ever wrong! After his Executive Board nearly resigned, he learned important lessons in leadership, effectively communicating his vision, and building a change-ready organization. One year later, membership had increased about 300%. Todd was taking the first steps in learning about being “better than average”.

After years of studying companies and life, Todd now the best-selling author of Better than Average: Excelling in a Mediocre World, he is a frequent speaker leading programs and training for corporations, non-profit associations, and colleges and universities who want to be Better than Average in order to stand out from the crowd.

About “Better than Average”: (taken from authors web site)

Better than Average: Excelling in a Mediocre World is a business book by Todd Brockdorf designed for professionals who want to stand out from the crowd.

Leave that old concept of growing up, getting an education, and obtaining a steady job behind. That’s Average. If you’ve ever dreamed of wanting more, desired to stand out from the crowd, or wanted to reach a higher level of your potential, Better than Average is your guide.

This step-by-step road-map to your Better than Average lifestyle, leadership, and company teaches:

·    How to distinguish yourself from the crowd
·    How to apply the 8-step Better than Average process to your personal, social, and professional lives
·    How to emulate the 8 habits of today’s Better than Average leaders
·    How to let your creativity flourish while remaining in the fold
·    How to build on your existing talents to give you a step up on Average
·    That it doesn’t have to be grand to be glorious

While there have been many authors in the Self Help / Personal Improvement category on the show, most of them either relate to business management, or share steps that are in many ways beyond the normal reader.  This book provides a  clear explanation of his concepts, peppered with humor and specific examples from the authors own  experience that can relate to all aspects of life as well as being helpful for all ages.

A Book and a Chat with Arnine Cumsky Weiss

If my guest had followed her childhood dream I could have been chatting to an interior designer on today’s show, instead Arnine Cumsky Weiss followed a career as a nationally certified sign language interpreter and a teacher of English as a second language. She has worked in the field of Deafness for over thirty years including signing at events from presidential speeches to a Broadway play, even at the childbirth of ten babies.

Along the way she has written six books, the first of which Becoming a Bar Mitzvah: A Treasury of Stories, was inspired by her oldest son surviving cancer. Arnine’s first novel “The Undefeated” was rolling around in her head for 20 years before she wrote it, using her own knowledge and experience. “The Undefeated” is a coming-of-age story of two young men set in northeastern Pennsylvania during the turbulent times of the civil rights movement. The book focuses on friendship and loyalty as each young man finds himself faced with adversity.

Now she has launched a new book “She Ain’t Heavy” which Arnine describes thus…

“In the aftermath of 9/11, I was fascinated with the stories of the people who were supposed to be in the towers that morning and were not. I wondered if they realized they were given a second chance and what they did with it. Although I changed the setting from New York to Philadelphia, I kept the theme of She Ain’t Heavy about getting a second chance.”

About “She Ain’t Heavy” :

Just when counter clerk Teddy Warner is about to be evicted from her Scranton apartment, she bumps into beautiful, brilliant, blond Rachel – her estranged childhood friend whose mother forbid their friendship thinking Teddy was beneath them.

Teddy and Rachel reconnect over hot chocolate and under New Year’s Eve fireworks.  Their discussion leads to an invitation. Soon, Teddy’s on her way to Philadelphia, where Rachel is a student, to share an apartment and begin an exciting new life in the City.

Teddy views Rachel as perfect.  Rachel can’t bring herself to shatter the image by letting on that she is having an affair with a married man. Just when Teddy is starting to feel at home, Rachel insists on some privacy.  Acting out her anger at being asked to stay away, Teddy indulges in a one-night stand.

When Teddy returns to their apartment the next morning, Rachel is being carried out on a stretcher – the victim of carbon monoxide poisoning. This unforeseen tragedy leaves Teddy alone in a strange city, with no money, no friends, and no connections.

As Teddy struggles to find her way, she meets a mentor at the same university Rachel previously attended who takes an interest in her, but with strings attached. She also develops a unique bond with the firefighter who rescued Rachel.  And yet, Teddy remains committed to helping Rachel get back on her feet, at a time when no one else who supposedly loves her can accept her in this diminished way.  Along the way, Teddy discovers her own strength in the roles of caretaker, lover, and friend.

If you love a strong female character, one with a lot of spunk and desire to survive against the odds, then pick up a copy of “She Ain't Heavy”. We can all learn a thing or two from a character like Teddy. A Book and a Chat with "Mystic" Pete Ludwig

My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is radio host, cellist, music and video producer, spiritual teacher, aphorist and now author. He is also better known to his many radio fans on the west coast as “Mystic Pete”.

Pete has taught and organized events internationally connecting spirituality and the arts (music, dance, storytelling, and writing); he has also produced a really great musical CD to aid deep relaxation and meditation. He hosts a popular radio show, “In A Dream,” one of the only broadcast shows on the West Coast featuring the DJ community, on KXLU, 88.9 fm, Los Angeles, Saturday nights at midnight.

His debut book “Mystic Pete Chronicles – Book 1: Sex & Mysticism” is the first in a series of books in which he provides a fresh, innovative and often humorous “how-to manual” for acquiring advanced mystical power.

About “Mystic Pete Chronicles – Book 1: Sex & Mysticism” :

Presented in an engaging style, his ideas will make you stop, laugh, and think—the recipe for a great guidebook. Starting with an assessment of where we are now, Mystic Pete then takes us to a new reality that is sure to rearrange your view of who we are and where we’re going.

Some of the jewels of wisdom he drops on us: the two big lessons we have to learn, the most important secret to great sex, the purpose of the universe, the plan, and -a really interesting view of what spurred the construction of our civilization.

Using his own spiritual training method, the Five Powers- Self Protection, Healing, Raw Power, Manifestation, and Guidance- Mystic Pete guides the reader to wisdom, compassion, and dignity and provides a comprehensive foundation in mysticism.

In his future books “Mystic Pete” will provide much more details on each of the five powers along with the body, relationships, mystical sex techniques, the spiritual laws, and advanced matters.

The Mystic Pete Chronicles provide a breath of fresh air in the mystical power, health and well-being books, taking the reader from laughter to deep thought.

Bullying - A Book and a Chat with Kaitlin Bevis

On the sixth and final Book and a Chat about bullying I am pleased to have Kaitlin Bevis as a guest. The past five shows have covered many aspect of bullying from across all ages and I hope the shows have helped a few people along the way. Indeed I know from an email I received after one show they have indeed made a difference to some people.

Kaitlin herself has been on both sides of the bullying fence being bullied and being the bully, attending a small town school where classes were about twelve people and secrets were hard to keep. During the show she shared with us about one of her friends who with good looks, money a smart mind and a pleasant personality one would think would be “the” girl, instead because of the plus things she was bullied.

Kaitlin was one of those people who knew from an early age that she wanted to be a writer. She spent her childhood curled up with a book, and a pen... Yes a pen… as If the ending didn’t agree with her, she rewrote it.

After studying English at college she started writing articles for truuconfessions.com and Athens Parent Magazine before starting her wonderful “Daughters of Zeus” and her first trilogy about Persephone.
While about a Greek Gods and Goddesses set in a modern setting there is always a background of bullying, anybody who knows a little about Greek Mythology will know Zeus could be a bit of a bully.

The series which to me is a must read, consists of “Persephone”, “Daughter of the Earth and Sky” and “The Iron Queen”, this is going to be followed by a trilogy about “Aphrodite” again set in a modern world.

About “Persephone”: (taken from Amazon)

There are worse things than death, worse people too.

The "talk" was bad enough, but how many teens get told that they're a goddess? When her mom tells her, Persephone is sure her mother has lost her mind. It isn't until Boreas, the god of winter, tries to abduct her that she realizes her mother was telling the truth. Hades rescues her, and in order to safely bring Persephone to the Underworld he marks her as his bride. But Boreas will stop at nothing to get Persephone. Despite her growing feelings for Hades, Persephone wants to return to the living realm. Persephone must find a way to defeat Boreas and reclaim her life.

This first book has already received almost a 100 reviews on Amazon filled with comments such as…

"'Persephone' is a fun, imaginative, smart retelling of my favorite myth, fusing modern culture with a rich world of magic. I had such a great time reading this. I ate it up in just a few days. With its irreverent sense of humor and its intelligent references, it reminds me most of Joss Whedon, in particular the livelier, funnier seasons of "Buffy" or "Angel."

All in all a good way to finish of my six shows about bullying. So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining show as I chat with my special guest on today's last show about bullying on Bullying - A Book and a Chat with Kaitlin Bevis

A Book and a Chat with K.F. Ridley

I first came across my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” when I was hopping from site to site checking out various new books on “The Next Big Thing” blog week, where people shared what they were writing or releasing as their “Next Big Thing”. While hopping from blog to blog I came across K. F Ridley’s” page and her new book “Dirt”, since then I have been trying to get her on the show and finally here she is.

K.F Ridley or rather Kim, has always had what can only be described as a wild imagination,  a place she used to go to escape from her own world which had its own issues. From studying opera, to a career in nursing, all the time there was bubbling underneath,  a world ready to explode into this world. Finally Kim was able to share some of the multitude of stories that were filling her head in her first novel “The Curse of Yama” Book 1 of The C Walker Adventure series, which is to be followed later this year by book two “The Castle of Family”. The series is sort of Indiana Jones with a little bit of fantasy and who done it mixed in, mid grade series, for all ages. That might sound strange but it is a series that all will enjoy, and Kim already has another 3 books in the series ready to be shared with readers.

The book that I picked up on during “the Next Big Thing” was “Dirt” the first book of a trilogy that is now available for readers.

About "Dirt":

Ashe has just entered college and is studying Art, she leads a simple life and has pretty much brought herself up because her oddball father is so dedicated to his scientific research in a lab under their house, where he occasionally resurfaces to dig and bury stuff in the back garden or give her the medicine for her unknown condition. One day, on her way home, she realises she is being followed by a black camero and speeds off, luckily the car turns in a different direction… this time…. But he comes back, again and again and eventually makes contact. Just who is this man ‘Rowen’ and why is he following her around? It’s usually her best friend Taylie who get attention from the boys.

That isn’t the only odd thing to happen to Ashe though, but it starts a chain of events that will change Ashe’s life completely, leaving her to wonder just who she is… until Rowen takes her somewhere in the name of protection and she finds out, the thing is, they want her blood……and they want her dead!

As we learned during the show the follow up books “Sand” and “Clay” are almost ready, and going by the comments and reviews for “Dirt” already have many people asking for their release date.

I came across K.F. Ridley as the “Next Big Thing” and I think her “Dirt” trilogy will be just that.
So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining show as I chat with my special guest today on A Book and a Chat with K.F. Ridley

A Book and a Chat with David Snow

As we here all the time on TV, radio and in the news papers identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America. Incidents have reached around 10 million cases a year in the US, every minute around 20 people fall victim of identity theft.

My guest on today’s A Book and a Chat is David Snow, whose book “Someone Has Taken My Place” shares with us a true international chase, investigation and capture of Insurance Fraudster who stole identities of deceased Irish babies.

David is the real-life investigator who handled the case on which SOMEONE HAS TAKEN MY PLACE is based: it involved Jeremy Cochran, a Texan who traveled from Dallas to Ireland intent on creating fresh identities from Irish babies who died around 1975, the time of his own birth.

The plot hit home hard in many ways for David having lost his own son Andrew in 2003 at the time of his birth.  This perhaps motivated David to get to the bottom of what at first glance looked like a simple insurance fraud but turned out much more.  David felt compelled to share the story, hoping that in some way to give justice to the parents whose children’s identities had been used for committing crime.

About “SOMEONE HAS TAKEN MY PLACE”:

Based on actual facts of the case, the novel follows Stone as he chases the Cowboy across Europe and the United States and–with the help of FBI, ex-KGB and CIA agents, the Secret Service, Interpol and the Irish police force–pieces together the Cowboy’s web of illegal aliases and criminal intent. Just how did a Texan travel to Ireland and obtain so many official Irish passports?
What is the evil secret at the heart of the multiple identity thefts?
Will Stone catch the Cowboy in time for the innocence to be restored to the children’s identities?

As David shared with us on the show, his book has already lead him to appearing on Ireland's longest running chat show and won him many plaudits around the world.

It’s David’s hope that  “SOMEONE HAS TAKEN MY PLACE” will alert readers to the problems of insurance fraud and identity theft, and to educate them “that ripping off of insurance companies is a crime we all pay for and how law enforcement, working together, can stop it

A Book and a Chat with Harriet Rossetto

Harriet Rossetto is the author of the fascinating memoir/autobiography "Sacred Housekeeping – A Spiritual Memoir”. The book tells of Harriet’s life which had its own devils and lack of direction was , by a chance answering of an “ad” put on the path that would not only lead to the saving and redemption of many Jewish people, but also help her face and conquer her own issues.

Trained as a social worker with a strong Jewish identity, Harriet answered a classified ad in the Los Angeles times which for her would change her life forever. The ad read… “Looking for a person of a Jewish background to help incarcerated Jewish offenders."

Soon realizing that most of the Jew in jail had committed their crimes owing to “addiction” or as Harriet puts it “the dis-ease" of addiction”.
Frustrated by the lack of resources, she embraced the unpopular cause, fighting the widespread denial that "nice Jewish men and women" could be addicts and criminals in need of rehabilitation. A woman of passion, vision, and action, this fight took on the form of “Beit T'Shuvah: The House of Return.”
During the next 25 years not only has this lead to the saving of many people of the Jewish faith but also lead to Harriet’s marriage to the now “Rabbi Mark Borovitz”.
As one reviewer said of the book…
Ms. Rossetto has once again accomplished the impossible: written a profoundly naked autobiography of searing truth and honesty which is simultaneously on every page also a very clear no-punches-pulled road-map as to how to lead a life worth living.
About Sacred Housekeeping - A Spiritual Memoir (taken from Harriets web site)
An honest autobiography of a courageous woman and social worker, who took an interest in the unpopular cause of helping incarcerated Jewish men re-enter society and made it her life's passion. From that passion was born Beit T'Shuvah, a once tiny halfway house that has grown exponentially into a renowned treatment organization.

Her voyage is remarkable and an inspiration to all people. This is the personal story of the obstacles she surmounted and the successes she encountered. This book also tells the unconventional love story of Harriet Rossetto and her husband, Rabbi Mark Borovitz.

A Book and a Chat with Barbara Everett Heintz

Every so often I come across a book on my show that I think people should read, not just for enjoyment but in many ways for education as well. While I have only been in America for twelve years thanks to a lot of knowledge picked up doing “A Book and a Chat” one could say I know more about the country and in many cases the people than many born and bred people in the USA.

Today’s guest award winning author Barbara Everett Heintz and her book “Pinkhoneysuckle” are cases in point. The book has already one several wards and shows life, being mostly a memoir in an area that many American’s just do not know about.

Barbara takes her  life story to describe the "Hidden People" of Appalachia, basically 3rd world existence,

Where the poor whites and blacks discriminated against and segregated to the poorest mountainous regions of the Bible Belt, their strength and identity shaped by religious values and the virtue of living off the land.
Through her own upbringing she is able to provide a unique insight to the Appalachia in the mid-20th century, the class struggles and poverty, the family dynamics and rich cultural traditions.

The book takes the reader through the harshness of the Appalachian way of life that included abuse and incest, Barbara is able to portray the misery that she lived through.

As one reviewer put it…

The author brings us into her life in Appalachia in a time when most of America barely even knew they existed. She does not spare the painful details, yet comes to an understanding of the people she grew up with, family, friends and neighbors alike. She selflessly loves all as she matures, and her understanding of the human condition grows.

To my mind it is a must read book, perhaps a true masterpiece. It shares about how a poor family that lives in the hill country of the rural South. Written in unique style that it is a pleasure to read, and has the reader constantly what will be revealed next.
