A Book and a Chat with Dr Steven R Feldman

My guest today is Dr Steven R Feldman is a professor of dermatology, pathology, and public health sciences at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. After taking a bachelor’s degree with a focus in chemistry at the University of Chicago he went onto to study dermatopathology with a mission is to improve the care of patients with skin disease. Dr. Feldman’s chief clinical interest is psoriasis.

After over 400 articles in peer-reviewed journals and giving over 600 invited lectures to dermatology groups and organizations, Dr Feldman has taken his experiences and produced and almost biographical book “Compartments: How the Brightest, Best Trained, and Most Caring People Can Make Judgments That are Completely and Utterly Wrong.”

In Compartments, readers journey into conflicts in healthcare and other groups and organizations, uncovering strange behaviors and hidden truths. These stories explain how separations and borders cause conflict between groups of people:

First, there are things in other groups that we don’t see;
Secondly, there are things we do see that we shouldn’t trust;
Thirdly, our perceptions are controlled by the context in which we make observations.

Readers will learn:
• Why medicines stop working
• How tanning beds are addictive
• Why some doctors appear clueless and uncaring to their peers
• How people in the health insurance industry and drug companies aren’t all “bad”
• How people in other countries are more like Americans than we are led to believe

A Book and a Chat with Barbara Barnett

My guest on today's show Barbara Barnett knows all about that character, her book "Chasing Zebras" is a comprehensive and (hopefully) thought-provoking look at the hit TV show House, M.D.

Now too many English people, such as myself, you mention the name "Hugh Laurie" and they think of the comedian, part of the double act with "Stephen Fry", or playing Bertie Wooster and must of all playing the bumbling fool type s such as the Prince of Wales the fabulous Black Adder TV series.

In the US however like many several other British comedians “Hugh Laurie" has made his name as a straight actor, being the face of "House MD".

During the show Barbara explained about the title of her book “Chasing Zebras” and how it comes from an old medial axiom taught to medical students. When you hear hoof beats, think horses, not zebras—think common, not complex and rare. The television show’s central character is a zebra-chasing physician—he only treats extremely rare diseases.

One of the interesting things about the series, which not everybody realizes is how the series narrative, central character Dr. Gregory House and all in his orbit is so connected with Sherlock Holmes.

About "Chasing Zebras":

CZ is a comprehensive (and fun) exploration of the hit television series House, M.D. It’s written in two parts. In the first, I take apart the show’s storylines, character histories, bits of social commentary and more. My aim is to understand the series narrative, central character Dr. Gregory House and all in his orbit.

I look at everything from the series connections to Sherlock Holmes to the music, sets, etc. I also look the often-provocative social commentary: what does the series say about ethics, religion and God, patient rights and more.

The second part of the book is an episode-by-episode dissection. It summarizes each episode, but also hones in on the highlights and a lot of fun trivia: how was House a jerk, what was the episode’s ethical dilemma?

What was House’s eureka moment? What was the most important relationship moment?
What was the “romantic” moment between Wilson and his best friend House, for example? But even in this section,
I delve deeply into many of the episodes with “Closer Look” essays.

House has now reached its 150 episode and is more popular world wide than ever, and I’m sure her books, which have already been available in many countries will like the TV series itself spread across the world.

A Book and a Chat with Christopher Stookey

Doctors and lawyers seem to be the guests on many shows over the last few months, I’m wondering if it’s that with the use of the computer would be readers/publishers do not have to try and translate doctors writing?

Anyway, my guest on today’s A Book and a Chat” is another doctor who has now gone into print. That is Christopher Stookey, whose debut medical/mystery/thriller is called “Terminal Care”.

Medical malpractice is something we all have to pay for, normally with the increase in medical insurance bills. Just imagine if you were a doctor and saw something going on that you did not think was right how you would feel.

During the show Chris shared with us his how his own introduction to the medical profession was being part of a lawsuit, as well as perhaps some of the items that he has seen fist hand in his day to day work as an emergency physician have influenced his debut novel. After all they say “write about what you know.”

About Terminal Care:

“Terminal Care” is set in San Francisco, and explores the unsavory world of big-business pharmaceuticals as well as the sad and tragic world of the Alzheimer’s ward at a medical research hospital. It is part medical procedural, part thriller, and part mystery and all three are expertly woven together to create a fast paced medical thriller.

The show included many side of this new author as well and an insight into his next novel.

A Book and a Chat with Dean M. DeLuke

My guest on today’s”A Book and a Chat” is Dr Dean M DeLuke. I guess now that people can type up their novels on a computer, it does not matter that people always had trouble reading doctors writing, and perhaps that’s why there seem to be more and more doctors, turning their hands to writing.

In the case Dean, it is not just his medical background that he’s been able to use in the production of his mystery/thriller novel “SHEDROW” but also his love for thoroughbred racing, that goes back to his youth.

Think “Dick Francis meets Robin Cook” and you’ll have a rough idea of this splendid debut novel. It is a story and adventure that straight from the off, gallops along taking the reader through many twists and turns on a page turning adventure. “Shedrow” is not just for horse lovers and thoroughbred race enthusiasts, to whom the word “Shedrow” is instantly recognized as a row of barns at a race track. It is a book for all ages and sexes, the book is a terrific whodunit, with characters that lead you from one chapter to another making you want to know more about them.

As Dean shared with us during the show, the book and the publication has been helped by other medical authors, and I’m sure the name Dean M DeLuke will soon be spoken about with other famous doctor authors.

A Book and a Chat with Dr Harry J. Saranchak

My guest today should have been Dr. Harry J. Saranchak, 30 years a vascular and general surgeon in three Connecticut hospitals, and for 25 of those he was also educator and mentor to medical students, residents and colleagues—while receiving eight Golden Scalpel awards for teaching excellence. Talking about his murder, mystery, voodoo, self-discovery and romance book “Betrayals of Hippocrates: Crimes Against Innocence”.

Imagine my surprise, after all the mentioned in shows over the last few months of parallel universes where the stories that and author puts down onto paper exist and all us writers are the conduit in this universe. How the characters take over the story leading the author far from their designed plot. Once the show started it was as I was saying, a surprise to actually be interview characters from the book, rather than chatting to the author. First the hijack the novel and then my radio show.

Still the show proved very interesting and enlightening, hearing if you like from both side of what went on through the books pages, from the investigation and shock of what Dr Alston Crowley and Maggie found happening on the beautiful island of Haiti, much of which was being done by the less than Hippocratic Dr Longfellow. To the views of Dr Longfellow himself, that the suffering of a few to aid millions was worth the suffering, which to my mind smacks of Nazi Germany.

“Betrayals of Hippocrates: Crimes Against Innocence”.

Dr. Alston Crowley’s medical career took flight on the wings of his parents’ dream. With fluctuating grades and a half-hearted desire to become a doctor, Alston much preferred to set his sights on specimens of the female variety. Not wishing to disappoint his parents, however, he decided to compromise, and set out for the Caribbean island of Montserrat, where he studied while basking in the natural beauty around him. Then, during his residency, the euphoria of paradise soon morphed into the harsh, clinical reality of New York Charity Hospital, where he met his nemesis, the brilliant practitioner, Dr. Maggie Finney. Ultimately, they found their way home – to the core meaning of “justice,” and the true essence of themselves. In this intense narrative, blended with intrigue, romance, and humor, author Harry J. Saranchak asks his readers to do the same. No one is immune to unethical practices and, where lives are at stake, the world is involved.
