A Book and a Chat with Bob Ferguson

Bob Ferguson is my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”, chatting about his debut book the thriller “Buzzard Bay”. Bob grow up in a remote region of Canada without electricity or telephones, spending many an evening dreaming of faraway places listening to an old battery operated radio.

Later these once dreamed about places became reality as Bob traveled extensively. His trips to the Bahamas formed a basis for Buzzard Bay for the show Bob contacted us from Fiji, where Bob writes and his wife teaches.

Enjoyed by both men and woman, Buzzard Bay gives readers all the adventure and thrill they could ask for in this unputdownable read.

About Buzzard Bay: (taken from authors site)

Bob Green and his family get the opportunity of a lifetime by becoming involved in a new farming project in the Bahamas.  A plane crash confirms his suspicions as to why the farm has been operating at a loss.  The project is not what it seems on the outside.

The discovery of drugs on the airplane put all their lives in jeopardy.  Instead of leaving well enough alone, Green decides to fight back. He becomes involved in a world of intrigue, sex, violence, and drugs.  In doing so, he finds out that there is a fine line between good and evil. An assassination attempt in Canada goes terribly wrong during a vicious snowstorm.

When the sky clears and the bodies pile up, it becomes quite apparent that this was no hunting accident.  Two men escaped.  Bob Green was motivated by the love of his wife and family, Henekie by the death of his best friend and mentor, but mostly by greed.  Unwittingly, these two bitter enemies become embroiled in a bitter power struggle between a Columbian drug lord and the CIA in the Bahamas.

As one reviewer put it…

Buzzard Bay" in an original plot with twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages. A fantastic mystery that includes sex, violence, drugs and romance. I loved his characters as they were strong and independent. I do hope there is a sequel to this book, I want to know what happens! Highly recommended for all readers.

A Book and a Chat about The 30th RT Convention with Brenda Jackson and Guy Cote

Back in the 70’s Kathryn Falk decided to write a reference book entitled LADIES OF THE KNIGHT. While in the process of tracking down publishers, booksellers and authors, and compiling profiles and information, she discovered there was no way of knowing what books were coming out, when and where they would appear, which ones were best, who the authors were or how to write them. As she recalls, "Historical romances by Barbara Cartland, Rosemary Rogers and Jennifer Wilde were selling million of copies, she knew there had to be thousands of women, maybe more, who were curious about this type of reading. This was the start of what has “RT Book reviews”.

Romantic Times are the undisputed experts at reaching romance book lovers and creating a promotional medium for publishers and authors for the sale of even more romances started in the 70’s. Today RT BOOK REVIEWS Magazine reviews every romance published and rates it but it also reviews over 100 books in various other genres.

Next week sees the literary world headed to Kansas City for “The 30th RT Booklovers Convention" which will host over 1000 readers and 400 Bestselling authors.

Today I was lucky enough to have two of the authors who will be appearing at this wonderful event as guest on “A Book and a Chat”, to chat about the convention and their own books.

Brenda Jackson is a mutli award winning author, with a 100 books to her name several of which have gone on to be made into films, next week will be her 15th RT Convention. She is the first African-American romance author to make USA Today’s Bestseller’s List and the New York Times Bestseller’s List for the series romance genre. Her books have such a following she hosts her own cruise for her “literary family”.

Writing several different series she is scheduled to release almost a book a month this year with “A Brothers Honor” coming out in June and three more of the Westmorland, romantic western series scheduled over the summer months.

Guy Cote, will be attending his first RT Convention with his debut thriller “Long Live The King” the first in his “Charlemagne Saga”. Like Brenda he will not only be signing copies of his book and chatting to visitors but also be on a few panels and guest speaker events. His book allows him to share his love for history and travel mixed up with suspense, action, adventure… definitely a name for the future!

While the event covers the days there is also plenty to enjoy at night with balls, dances and fun events scheduled every evening providing more time for readers and authors alike to rub shoulders and chat about the wonderful world of “RT REVIEWS”.

A Book and a Chat with Rick Polson

Whether it’s a new business just starting up or an author with a new book, communication is one of the major aspects of the process. With experience in communication going back to his high school days in the early 70’s, Rick Polson my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” has a lot to share in his new book ”Making a Superstar Company”.

In the book Rick gives new business owners a way to understand the different types of marketing and advertising vehicles available to them. It is written in a style where “you’re sharing a cup of coffee or meal” with the author while he tells you how these things work. There are many historic references and examples to give the reader an understanding of newspaper, radio, cable/TV and the Internet just to name a few.

As discussed during the show much discussed about a new company can also relate to producing a new book.

As Rick says about his book… ”Most small business owners are experts in retail, restaurants, service companies like air conditioning or plumbing, but most have no real grasp on how to gain a customer base and build a business. That’s why I wrote the book. To help them grow and be successful.”

He goes on to tell us that there are plenty of examples in each chapter that the reader can put into place immediately and grow their business successfully. If read a chapter or two at a time, the new business owner can build their organization in steps and be successful. It is also a benefit for business owners of any current business as a review of new ideas.

As one reviewer wrote about the book…

A must read for people starting and or expanding an existing company! Everything you need to know to give you the heads up information wise. Saving you time and mistakes!

A Book and a Chat with Mark Rubinstein

Fellow Connecticut author Mark Rubinstein is the guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”, with a background of medicine and psychiatry which includes several non-fiction books, Mark has now produced his debut fiction novel in the form of the wonderful suspenseful and riveting, “MAD DOG HOUSE”.

The book is a fast passed page turner, a provocative psychological thriller that will keep you as one reviewer stated… “kept reading faster and faster to find out the ending.”

About Mad Dog House:

The action revolves around three men who grew up together and never expected their pasts would come back to haunt them 30 years later. Throughout the novel, the author provokes readers to think about the unrelenting power of the past, and the demons lurking inside others, and perhaps themselves. Rubinstein, a psychiatrist, never lets us forget that no one is ever completely in control of their destiny.

Roddy Dolan was a young man living in Brooklyn with an explosive temper and shady friends, which nearly landed him in prison at 17. If it weren’t for a compassionate judge and the Army, Roddy might have ended up going nowhere.  But that’s the past, gone for good. Or is it?

After escaping his hell on earth – a harrowing childhood in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn – Roddy now has a successful, fulfilling career as a surgeon, a beautiful family, and a lovely home in the suburbs of New York. Today, at age 45, he is a different man and worthy of the respect he has earned. Rage is no longer part of his life. Or, so Roddy thinks...until a friend from the past appears out of the blue and drags him back into the shadows of organized crime and re-evokes his long-buried “Mad Dog” alter ego.

Reviews have been flooding in from many readers with words such as… “can’t put down,’ fast-paced, superbly written thriller” and “In Mark Rubinstein’s Mad Dog House, the characters–all well-developed and dripping with authenticity–propel the novel along with style and edge-of-your-seat excitement. Word of caution: be prepared for an all-night, page-turning read where you will emerge exhilarated and begging for more.”

Well reviewer your wish will be granted, as we discussed during the show, people are already asking for more and the standalone novel will soon have a follow up in the form of “Mad Dog Justice”.

A Book and a Chat with Liesl Shirtliff

It was another of our one hour specials as I introduce to the audience and chat with another member of the “Class of 2K13” in the form of author Liesl (like Weasel) Shirtliff.

Liesl grow up in Salt Lake City, Utah the fifth of eight children, a childhood filled with magic be it from her love of dancing, singing, playing the piano or reading, she read Grimm’s Fairy Tales so often she wore through the binding.

Like the Brady Bunch, plus two she remembers summer when her parents piled all the kids in a 12-passenger van, complete with a license plate that said 8SGREAT, and drove to California where she spent magical summers on mountains and lakes and beaches. The fact she later had to drive that same van to school somehow takes a little away from the story.

Her love of music continued and she received a degree from Brigham Young University in music, dance, and theater, thinking her life would involve belting out show songs, this  changed with the birth of her first child, Liesl settling to the slightly quieter art of writing.
Now Liesl drawing from her love of fairy tales shares her debut midgrade book “Rump”.

About “Rump” (taken from OneFor KidLit)

In a magical kingdom where your name is your destiny, 12-year-old Rump is the butt of everyone’s joke.

Rump has never known his full name—his mother died before she could tell him. So all his life he’s been teased and bullied for his half-a-name. But when he finds an old spinning wheel, his luck seems to change. For Rump discovers he can spin straw into gold. Magical gold.

His best friend Red Riding Hood warns him that magic is dangerous—and she’s right! That gold is worth its weight in trouble. And with each thread he spins, Rump weaves himself deeper into a curse.

There’s only one way to break the spell: Rump must go on a quest to find his true name, along the way defending himself against pixies, trolls, poison apples, and one beautiful but vile-mannered queen. The odds are against him, but with courage and friendship—and a cheeky sense of humor—Rump just might triumph in the end.

As we heard during the show there were a few items that had to be changed along the way, such as the name of the donkey, however the resulting novel is a fairy tale master piece for all to read and enjoy.

As one reviewer put it…

I had never been a big fan of the fairy tale, Rumplestiltskin but this book changed my mind! Such a fun, humorous and clever take on the classic. I read it to my children ages 5 - 9 and they couldn't wait for bedtime when they could listen to another chapter of this magical book full of trolls, fairies, bullies, magic and a surprising hero. One of the best children's books I've read in a long time. I can't wait for another book by Liesl Shurtliff.

As we learned there is another book based on Jack and the Beanstalk already on the horizon, and I for one can’t wait to read more from this talented author.

A Book and a Chat with Chris Karslen

My guest today Chris Karslen is a native of Chicago, former police detective and now romantic suspense author she grew up with a love of history and books. Her parents loved traveling, a passion they passed on to her. Though her desire to write began in her teens, Chris spent twenty-five years in law enforcement with two different agencies before she decided to pursue her dreams.

Now an internationally published author, Chris has traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Near East, and North Africa satisfying her need to visit the places she read about.

Having spent a great deal of time in England and Turkey, she has used her love of both places as settings for her books. "Heroes Live Forever," which is her debut book, is set in England as is the sequel, "Journey in Time." Both are part of her "Knights in Time" series, and soon to be joined by a third novel.

Her third book, released in late 2011, "Golden Chariot," started her on the romantic thriller path, set in Turkey as described by Night Owl Reviews as…

5-Star review- As with her other books, Chris Karlsen has impeccably researched her topic. Golden Chariot is engaging and full of information and insight. I thoroughly enjoyed this smart, well-written story and am looking forward to reading more from this author. Josie--Night Owl Reviews.

This has now been followed by a second in the series which is already looking to be another hit for Chris in the form of “Byzantine Gold”.

About Byzantine Gold: (taken from Examiner blog)

Charlotte and Atakan, the hero and heroine from Golden Chariot are archaeologists who are assigned to work the recovery of a Byzantine shipwreck off the coast of Cyprus. Atakan is an agent with the Turkish Ministry of Culture, the investigation of artifact smuggling is one of his duties.

Prior to leaving for Cyprus with Charlotte, Atakan is seriously wounded by an old enemy he had imprisoned and is now bent on revenge. Atakan is still to be present on the wreck site but Charlotte will have to partner with another diver.

The unusual hoard of gold the wreck carried as cargo has brought a lot of publicity. It has also caught the attention of a militant cell of the PKK, a terrorist organization operating near the southeastern border of Turkey. The leader of the cell has managed to infiltrate the recovery team. His group plan on attacking the team’s campsite and stealing the valuable relics to sell on the black market. Monies from the smuggling operation will buy more weapons for the cell. The terrorist becomes Charlotte’s dive partner.

Charlotte and Atakan know the old enemy of his will strike at him again. While watching and waiting for the next attempt, the infiltration of the terrorist is discovered. Atakan and a fellow agent of the Ministry must race the clock to prevent the attack on the camp.

A great sequel to Golden Chariot” described by one reviewer as…

…another action packed thriller rich with description of Turkey. The romance between Charolette and Atakan continue to enthrall as an old enemy closes in determined to finish them off for good. There are intense and vivid character portrayals of the villain Tischenko as well as the main characters and terrorists. Karlsen keeps you in suspense wondering what will happen next and how it will all end.

The review end...”Highly Recommended” which is exactly how I feel about this great author.
